3 Happenings at Sandy Valley Senior Center Submitted by Linda LeVasseur There are things happening at the Senior Center. If you are over the age of 50, come join us. Congratulations to Sharon Campbell, our May volunteer of the month. Sharon works on Tuesday mornings, helps with the decorating our center, does prep for our Senior Breakfast. She leads our Cooking Class that meets every third Tuesday of the month at 12 noon. There are so many other things that she helps or does for the center that I would run out of column space to name. Thank you, Sharon for your support of our Center. We are trying some new things starting in June. On Thursdays at 10:00 in the morning, join us for our weight management group. Our first meeting will be June 6. We will decide how the group will work. We are also looking at some new workout classes. So pick up a calendar or stop by to get the latest of what is going on. Genealogy class is very active. Come check it out. They meet on the first Tuesday at 1 P.M. The third Friday at 2 P.M. Senior is just a term not a sign of getting old and inactive. Come use your Center. Sandy Valley School is hosting a drawing for the following: Two Nights Three Day Stay, Two Headliner Showroom Tickets, and Dinner for Two at the Primarily Prime Rib Steak House at the South Point Hotel and Casino. Tickets on sale at Sandy Valley School for sale at $10.00 each or 6 for $50.00 Proceeds to benefit Sandy Valley School Drawing will be held August 26th and you do not have to be present to win. Tickets on sale at Sandy Valley School. Congratulations! By Becky Goodwin Sandy Valley Rodeo Team is proud to announce that Miss Brilynn Bentley made us proud during the Nevada State Junior High School Finals this past weekend. Brilynn won her very first belt buckle by winning the Short Go in Breakaway Roping. Her older brother, Blake, will be representing our Rodeo Team in a few weeks. Congratulations Brilynn! Also in the news... Sandy Valley PE Teacher and Football Coach, Bret Kramer, was recognized by his students as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The students' comments are posted on for all to see. Congratulations! Recycling By Lyal S. Darrel Ok everybody in the valley; it is time for us to be the number one in the county in recycling. We are already half way there, in that; the proposal from Republic Services is to do the garbage and recycle pick-up once weekly in the greater Las Vegas area. Since we already get our garbage removed once a week and we have our recycle picked up once every two weeks, the recycle will increase to once per week as well. I know, I know everyone has the same opinion about the recycle, that it is too much hassle to haul it out and have to have a place to store it till pick up time. I have been on the recycling 'kick' since The Hitchin Post Café Mon. Sat. 11:00am 8:00pm Sun.. 8:00am to 6:00pm 3 Shade Lyal S. Darrel Yes, everyone, we all need to take care of our animals/pets. They need food, water, and shade among other things. Yes there is an ordinance on the books that says we should provide 120 square feet of shade for each horse, cow, goat, llama and such. Those of us that have chickens either have a coop or they just run free and find their own shade. But with the time constraints of going to work in Las Vegas, coming home to make dinner, make sure that the little ones have done their homework, getting them in the bath and to bed and oneself the same, we run out of time. As I have heard from several people, 'there is just not enough time in the day.' Then there are the weekends, when we need to maybe plant the garden, we need to do the laundry and myriad other things, the shade for our animals gets pushed to the back burner. I have even heard that even with the shade being in place, the animals do not even use it.

6 A MESSAGE FROM THE SANDY VALLEY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT... First we would like to thank everyone in the community that came out for our 13 th Annual Balloon Fest/Pancake Breakfast and Public Safety Event in February. It exceeded our expectations and goals. We appreciate all who participated both by attending and by working. This year was our best year ever!! On a different note, we would like to remind all community members to clear any areas rapidly if you see our lights or hear our sirens. We do not always run calls with lights and sirens, so if we are doing so, know that this IS an emergency. We want to stress that if we ask you to clear an area for a helicopter landing; we need you to do so NOW! We cannot efficiently care for a patient while having to keep checking the security of our landing zones. We are limited on the personnel we have to run the calls. We also would appreciate that if you see the helicopter on the ground, please do not try to approach or distract our personnel from their job. If you have any questions or concerns, wait for the helicopter to leave, and we will be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have at that time. Leave Them Alone! There seems to be a current trend in our Valley of turning in individuals and businesses for a variety of violations. Rather than contact the business directly to try and resolve the problem, the complaints go directly to county representatives and claim they are speaking on behalf of the whole valley. In reality they are just a few residents in a valley where there are so many events they could be attending or volunteer work they could be doing. The few businesses that survive here supply desperately needed jobs. So please, if you have a legitimate complaint, talk first and take action only if necessary. And if it s a complaint about dust, attend your favorite church and pray for rain. After all, it s not named SANDY Valley for nothing. Thank You for Being Our Friend By Pat Smith I just wanted to take a little corner of the Coyote to thank all the wonderful people we met in Sandy Valley in the 13 years we lived there. We served on committees, boards, joined the Red Hats, Senior Center, churches: LDS, Catholic, and the Community Church. We also thank our Airport family. Leonard was able to live his dream of living on an airport, now I will live my dream of moving back to California and out of the heat. Thanks to those friends who stood beside Leonard during my illness and those friends who were there for me after Leonard's stroke. There is a lot to say about small towns, we banded together and supported each other through Fund Raisers, Craft Shows, Bake Sales, all for the good of the community. I will miss being involved in the Sky Ranch Airport Scholarship program, which will continue to support graduates of Sandy Valley High School. Genealogy Class The genealogy class meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 1pm and the third Friday at 1pm at the Senior Center. There are currently about twelve people in this group helping each other track long lost or sometimes finding out curious things about their ancestors. They all have fun sharing the new finds in their lives. If you would like to join them, please call the Senior Center at or Mary Aster at for more information. Who knows, you may be related to the Queen of England or maybe a descendent of Black Beard the pirate. 6 LUKE 10:10 Pest Control By Ann Weber I can personally vouch for this company. Steve was called on a Sunday morning and arrived at my house that afternoon. I had been using another company for years but was not happy with their work. I am hoping we can get a few homes here in the Valley to make it worth his time to come out. The prices are very reasonable and his work is great! He will be coming out for at least two homes June 17th to spray for unwanted critters. If you are interested, please call me at and he can do your place then. Or, call him at the number listed on his card above. As I said, I was very impressed by his quality of work and how quickly he responded to our call. 7 Sandy-Mesquite Valley Development Association invites everyone to come join us for a community event at Peace Park on July 4 th to celebrate America s birthday!! The parade will start at 10:00 a.m., when it s still cool, and will go from Miami & Quartz down to Peace Park. Come see your friends and local organizations on their floats, horses, and in their classic vehicles (whether it be car, truck, or tractor)!! Kay Searle (Miss Kay from the post office) has agreed to be our Grand Marshal. Following the parade, the fun will begin at the park! Activities are still being arranged, but we know there ll be fun for kids of all ages, and food to satisfy anyone s cravings. Tables and chairs will once again be set up under the trees for those who need to stop and rest awhile. If we get enough applications, there will be a new activity this year lawnmower races, done slalom style (a timed race over a zigzag course)!! Applications will be a $20 donation, with one winner getting half of the pot. The more people that enter, the bigger the pot, so if you have a riding lawnmower, tune it up, put air in those tires, and bring it on down!!! Live music will begin at 5:00 p.m. with Diana Drake performing; from 6:30 to around 10:00 CJ Roberts & the Wildhorse Band will play. Barbara Shoeman donated a beautiful stars and stripes throw, including a matching pillow, which SMVDA will be raffling off. Tickets are $1.00 apiece, or six for $5.00 and may be purchased at the post office, from Dick Drake, Linda Drake, or Mary Aster. The throw is on display at the post office. This will be raffled exclusively in the valley, so it will go home with some lucky Sandy Valley resident!! We re working on other things to raffle off as well more info on those later. The Parade and Vendor Participation forms are available in the rack inside the lobby of the post office, as are the applications for the lawnmower races. If you re planning on selling food, you d best hurry and get your vendor form turned into the post office, because only one table will be allowed to sell a certain food only one will be able to sell soda, for example. SMVDA will once again be barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs. Other vendors such as those selling jewelry or leather goods the more the merrier! Tables are going for a donation of $25 to SMVDA. Parade donations are $5 for individuals, horses, cars, etc., and $10 for floats. Checks should be made out to SMVDA and turned into the post office along with your application. If you have any questions about the parade, call Dick Drake at ; for questions about park events, please call Linda Drake at or Mary Aster at Store N Stuff Located at the Post Office We have locally crafted items, unique items and everyday items.
