2 Creative Director s Notes On behalf of the Performing Arts Team at St. John Plessington Catholic College I would like to welcome you to our theatre this evening to enjoy our modern interpretation of Dick Whittington. Since joining the drama team in September 2008 I have been provided with opportunities to work with and direct many talented pupils from all key stages and they have inspired me throughout this rehearsal process. I believe that a good theatrical production should gracefully glide along like a swan, pleasing the eye and lightening the soul. However below the surface, hidden from the audience, is the hard work and several weeks of rehearsal from pupils and staff; and so a deserved round of applause should ring out for all those involved at the close of curtain tonight. Every moment of the process has been a happy one as I have watched students develop confidence, performance and team skills throughout. With our version of the tale of Dick Whittington we have injected a modern twist into what we recognise as a traditional theatre genre. This has been such an exciting journey from taking the story from page to stage and this really is a wonderful showcase of our pupils talents in Dance, Drama and Music at the College. As the Creative Director of this show I am extremely proud of our cast and what they have achieved with this exciting production! So sit back, relax and enjoy. 3 Producer s Notes The second part of SJP S Christmas Trilogy this year is Dick Whittington. It represents an important milestone in the history of the college inasmuch as it is the first original script done on the large canvas of the College Hall. This collaboration into the realms of scripted and devised drama between myself and our talented Head of Performance, Sinead Heraghty, is a great challenge. I always say that the genre of pantomime should never be underestimated and approached too flippantly. With pantomime, timing is vital and meaning is created each night anew between a special relationship forged in the interaction of performer and audience. J.Owen Head of Drama Director of Dance Sasha has danced for twenty years participating in hundreds of competitions and winning titles including the British and European freestyle championships. Sasha studied dance at College and University gaining a BTEC Diploma, a Higher National Diploma and also a BA Hons Degree. Over the past 5 years Sasha has taught a variety of dance styles in many schools and community groups across Merseyside. She currently runs the Millennium Dance Troop and Trust Dance. It has been a real pleasure to have Sasha in the Performing Arts Team and the students have benefited from working with an expert in the field of dance. Thank you Sasha! The Rehearsal Process The rehearsal schedule for tonight s performance has been a demanding one and pupils have continuously shown commitment, dedication and sheer hard work to make tonight s performance a success. Not only have pupils acting skills been put to the test; they have also had to learn dance routines, with the guidance of a professional dance teacher, Sasha Davies. Every rehearsal has been a lot of fun for both the cast and the staff.
