introduction We are three dads on a mission to make great music for kids that won t drive parents bonkers! We started as a group in 1996 with the intent of fishing for men by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ through our music. We were signed to a national record label, had several radio hits, toured with many nationally known Christian artists, and had sold over 500,000 albums when we decided to make a major change. Despite our good intentions, we felt like we were not being effective. We were selling records, but our subtle approach of sharing the gospel was not working. Our fishing nets were not very full......so we changed two major things: 1 We decided to focus solely on making music for families with young children. 2 We decided to be bold in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Those around us called it career suicide, but it turned out to be the opposite. God has truly blessed us beyond our wildest imaginations! We have become passionate about reaching kids for Christ because we have seen them understand and accept the gospel over and over again. Kids are smarter than most people give them credit for and they know when you re shooting straight with them. Yet many curriculums, music, and programs for kids talk down to them and water down the gospel to the point where Jesus is nothing more than a new best friend. You don t have to read your Bible very often to know that He is WAY more than that. We decided to create this Vacation Bible School curriculum because it became evident to us while talking to children s pastors all across the country that VBS remains one of the last great opportunities to reach kids. Instead of making the mistake of flying under the radar like we did, we would challenge you to be bold this summer and confidently present kids with the answers they so desperately need. The gospel is the good news and we want to proclaim it loud and clear! This manual will give you suggestions and ideas, but we want you to use these materials however you see fit. As a matter of fact, if you think of better ways to do things (and we re sure you will!), please us and let us know what you did. We d love to share your improvements with others. This is the first time we ve produced a curriculum and your input will be invaluable to this and future projects! We will be praying for you, your leaders, and your kids as you go Backstage With The Bible! Andy, Jamie, and Jason The Go Fish Guys 2 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

starter kit contents Backstage With The Bible CD-Rom This includes all the manuals, lessons, skits, lyrics, crafts, signs and other print files. Backstage With The Bible Let s Sing DVD This includes all the music videos, karaoke videos, daily concert and encore Go Fish greetings, and the gospel presentation (used on day 4 of your Backstage Bible study). Because you will be using this for your concert, encore, karaoke (snack), and Backstage Bible times we highly recommend buying a few extra copies of this item. Backstage With The Bible Supplemental Audio CD This includes additional songs to play as kids enter and exit the concert area. Backstage With The Bible Official CD This includes ten Go Fish songs taken from their various kids albums. This is the same CD your kids can take home with them. 1 Sample Backstage Pass (and daily stickers) Party Like A Preschooler CD This will be a great tool to use in your preschool program. (It s pretty much the coolest preschooler CD ever!) Let s Sing Songbook This includes all ten Go Fish songs used in this curriculum. Backstage Bible Study Manual Backstage Bible Study Manual (Pre-School Version) Backstage Catering And Talent Discovery Manual This includes all snack and karaoke instructions. Backstage Set Design This includes all craft instructions. Backstage Director Manual Concert Leader Manual This includes all concert and encore instructions along with the daily skits. 6 overview Biblical knowledge and Christian principles are reinforced in every area of the Backstage with the Bible curriculum, including the songs the kids will be singing. You should fully expect your kids to know the Ten Commandments, the books of the Bible, and what it means to be saved by grace through faith by the end of the week. Because the whole idea of this curriculum is a concert environment it takes a lot of the pressure off of you and your leaders. The Go Fish Guys help with singing, welcoming the kids, reinforcing the Bible teaching in the daily songs and videos, and by helping with the gospel presentation on day 4! We have two objectives with this curriculum: 1 To share the gospel of Jesus Christ. 2 To teach the importance of the Bible. Each day we will tackle an important concept in understanding what it means to be a Christian. Along with teaching kids the gospel, we want every participant to learn more about the Bible. In his book Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions, George Barna reminds us of the importance of reaching children with God s Word while they are still young. Here are just a few conclusions from a series of studies he conducted: A) If people do not embrace Jesus Christ as their Savior before they reach their teenage years, the chance of their doing so at all is slim. B) By the age of 13, your spiritual identity is largely set in place. C) Only 3 percent of the nation s 13-year-olds have a biblical worldview, which serves as the foundation for their decision making. D) Young people are more likely to base their decisions on their feelings or what other people expect of them, rather than depend upon the Bible as their standard for moral choices. E) Whatever beliefs a person embraces when he or she is young are not likely to change as the individual ages. Essentially, what a child believes at the age of 13 is what they ll die believing. We have a huge opportunity to point kids to Christ through Vacation Bible School and we hope that amidst all the work and details, you and your team will never lose sight of that! So let s get started! 4 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

The Theme At a concert, the only thing better than a front row seat is a backstage pass! Kids are always very curious about what it s like to go backstage. Each day your kids will start out with their own concert experience worshipping and singing with the Go Fish Guys. Then they ll take their Bibles and backstage passes to go backstage with the Bible! The Promoter That s you! In the world of concerts, the promoter is the one that makes it happen. You re in charge of everything. The Roadies All of your helpers. They move the gear, carry out your orders, and make sure the kids get from place to place. The Audience (formed into Groupies) Every child that walks through the doors of your church. The Talent Actors, musicians, dancers, and the Go Fish Guys! They ll all play an important role in the concert and encore portions of the day. The Backstage Areas Concert and Encore Venue This is where the audience comes to see the concert and encore each day. If the audience members are cool enough to have their backstage pass and a Bible they can gain access to the following backstage areas! Backstage Bible Study Area Backstage Catering and Talent Discovery Area (Snacks and Karaoke) Backstage Set Design Area (Crafts) Intermission (Games) Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 5

the schedule Pre-Show (5 minutes) Five minute countdown as kids come in with music and audio build up to the concert! The Daily Concert (20 Minutes) 2 songs Daily video greeting by the Go Fish Guys and/or leader that sets up the day 1 Skit 1 more song and the send off to go backstage Backstage Catering and Talent Discovery (25 Minutes) Snack and Karaoke Intermission (25 Minutes) Games Backstage Set Design (25 Minutes) Crafts Backstage Bible Study (25 Minutes) Daily Lesson The Daily Encore (20 Minutes) 2 Songs Daily wrap up by the Go Fish Guys and/or leader 1 more song This curriculum can easily be modified for a 4-5 week Sunday school program, midweek, or after school program. However, the schedule in this manual is designed for a 3 hour Vacation Bible School. 6 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

the backstage areas concert & Encore Each day we will start the day with a concert and end the day with an encore. As kids are walking in there are extra songs available on the Backstage With The Bible supplemental audio CD included in your starter kit. To start the concert: Start the concert with a greeting, prayer, and announcements by the Backstage With The Bible concert promoter (aka VBS Director). After the announcements, then you start that day s concert on the DVD. The DVD will begin with a 10 second countdown. Make sure to leave house lights on during the announcements and countdown. The concert time will have a lot more impact if you save the stage lights for when the concert actually starts. Each day the DVD is broken down as follows on the Backstage With The Bible menu. Day 1 CONCERT Countdown First song Go Fish Guy Greeting / Backstage Tour 2 more songs Day 1 ENCORE Includes 2 songs Go Fish Guy wrap up 1 final song You also have the option of selecting the individual songs and greetings if you decide you want to do songs other than the ones we selected each day. Turn the page for a sample from the Concert Leader Manual for how a typical concert time will go. Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 7

DAY 1 CONCERT Sample concert & encore Before the concert starts, play the additional music provided on your supplemental audio CD (included in your starter kit). This will set the tone for a great day! Start with a greeting and announcements by the Concert Promoter or Concert Leader. Then start the DVD selecting the Day 1 CONCERT. (house lights up during announcements and countdown, then house lights down) The Day 1 CONCERT consists of: 10 Second Countdown Superstar music video Go Fish Greeting The B-I-B-L-E music video The Bible Book Bop music video After video, dancers leave and actors or puppets begin If I Were A Rich Kid skit. After skit, VBS Director will come up, encourage the kids by complimenting their singing, pray, comment on skit (if needed), and direct kids to the various backstage areas. DAY 1 ENCORE Start DVD right as kids are coming in to get them engaged right away! DVD select Day 1 ENCORE which contains the following: Jesus Loves Me music video Lord I Lift Your Name On High music video Go Fish wrap up video Stories music video After final song, VBS Director will come up, encourage kids to bring a friend, their Backstage passes, and their Bibles. This is also a great time to make any closing comments on the day, pray, and dismiss the kids to their parents. 8 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

Backstage Bible study This is where children will learn the gospel through their study of the Bible. Along with their backstage passes, we d really like to encourage kids to bring their Bibles with them everywhere they go to gain access to the different areas. In the Backstage Bible study students will look up verses in their Bibles and have an active role in the lesson time. These verses are included in your Backstage Catering and Backstage Set Design manuals as well. If there is extra time available, leaders can have children look up verses during these times as well. This gives them additional time with their Bibles and keeps them occupied during any down time. Backstage catering & talent discovery Each day students will hear a summary of the Bible lesson, explanation of the snack, and help create the snack. Along with this, we have included some karaoke videos on our DVD so students can sing along with the Go Fish Guys if there is extra time available after snack. Backstage set design Each day students will review the Bible lesson and have scripture reinforced through a craft. Each craft goes right along with the concert theme making it one of the most unique aspects of this curriculum. intermission Games are up to you. You know your kids better than we do, so we left this backstage area wide open for you to use as you wish! Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 9

decorations Overall: think rock and roll! To give hallways and entryways a true backstage feel, take all the old sound and lighting equipment out of that church storage space and scatter it around. (guitar cases, old instruments, and cases will work great!) It may not be beautiful, but trust us - that s what it looks like backstage...we know all too well! On our VBS web site (see inside cover of this manual) you can download signs to print out announcing the various backstage areas and the fact that it s restricted access: must show Bibles and backstage passes for entrance. You can have bouncers at each door so that students have to show their Bibles and passes each time. You can also take blank CDs and hang them all over using fishing line for a cool effect. Old albums, concert posters, and boom boxes strategically placed look pretty sweet, too. On Stage Make it as much like a concert as you can! Many churches already have lighting, trussing, and other production elements available for this. Rent a fog machine and some moving lights from your local sound and lighting company to really step it up a notch. In your Backstage Bible Studies there are new decorations recommended to reinforce the lesson each day. Also, we provide you with the files to print signs or posters for each backstage area. The files are available online on our Backstage With The Bible web site (see inside cover of this manual). 10 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

promotional ideas Videos On your DVD we ve included 2 promotional videos on the Bonus Features section of your Backstage With The Bible menu. The Backstage With The Bible Trailer The Backstage With The Bible Promotional Video (Overview) These, along with the music videos, are a great way to fire up your volunteers, church, and VBS kids. They clearly show what will happen and what makes this program so much fun. Outdoor Banners On the CD-Rom and on our web site you can download the outdoor banner artwork and then print out your sign at any Kinko s or other local printing facility. Shirts and Hockey Jerseys The official Backstage With The Bible t-shirts can be worn by leaders to church events in the weeks or months leading up to your VBS. If you REALLY want to be cool, you can order the official Go Fish hockey jerseys (like the guys wear) at! Christian Radio Stations Because many local Christian radio stations know Go Fish, they may be willing to help you promote. Many will consider coming to your church for a live broadcast if you ask them. It s great PR for them and it fits the concert theme perfectly. At the very least, maybe they ll play some of our music during the summer to help support your VBS. Some may not be willing to do this, but it never hurts to ask! The Go Fish Web Site We will gladly post your VBS info on our web site. We hope to get lots of our fans out to attend your Vacation Bible School programs. Download these promotional tools for free on our web site. Bring them to the printer of your choice and you re all set! Fliers Invitations Posters More free files will be added throughout the year! 17 staffing recruiting You ll be great at this if you: You will: backstage concert & encore leader love God and kids you enjoy leading worship are comfortable being in front of large groups can teach and motivate kids have rhythm Recruit 4-8 kids to do choreography on stage for each Concert and Encore session Rehearse with these kids 2-4 times prior to the start of Vacation Bible School Teach choreography for all songs using the choreography teaching videos included on the DVD Recruit actors or puppet team to perform the 5 daily skits during the Concert times (optional) Coordinate with Technical Coordinator for countdown, daily Concert, and daily Encore logistics backstage roadie (crew guide) We recommend one Roadie for every 6-8 kids. The Roadies will travel with their Backstage Groupies to all the various Backstage Areas each day. They will play a key role in answering questions, helping kids at each station, and establishing relationships with their kids. The Roadies will also distribute the daily stickers that go on the Backstage Pass each day after the Encore session. Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 15

backstage groupies Sorting The Children Into Backstage Groupies This curriculum was designed to give you a lot of freedom. When talking to children s pastors it became evident that churches have their own unique preferences when it comes to grouping kids together. Because of this, we designed Backstage With The Bible to be easily changed to fit your church. Assembling groups by age, grade, or mixed ages will all work. It is completely up to you. However, we recommend keeping kids of the same age together. We also suggest keeping your groups to between 6-8 kids with one Roadie assigned to each one of these groups. Along with your main concert and encore area, your groupies will travel to 4 additional backstage areas. Backstage Bible Study Area Backstage Catering and Talent Discovery Area (snack and karaoke) Intermission (games) Backstage Set Design (crafts) The Backstage Groupies will all gather together during the opening concert time, rotate as groupies through the various backstage areas, and then return to the concert site for the daily encore finale. 16 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

technical coordinator Because the whole curriculum is built around a concert environment, the technical side is something you don t want to overlook. Proper sound, lights, and video can make a huge impact on your Concert and Encore times Along with your Concert and Encore areas you ll need: DVD player and Video for the Day 4 Backstage Bible Study rooms. CDs and CD players in each room DVD player and Video for Karaoke videos (optional) in your Catering and Talent Discovery Backstage Area You can also make your Concert and Encore times BIG if you have a coordinator who can help with fog machines, additional lights, trussing, confetti, etc. It can be as big or as small as you d like. Either way, it will relieve a lot of stress and make for a smooth day if you have 1 or 2 people lined up to coordinate and operate all technical aspects for you. Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 17

registration Preregistration Preregistering kids will give you a head start in forming your backstage groupies, help you prepare for any children with special needs, and will also help you know how many supplies you will need. You can download the Preregistration Form (see following page) on our VBS web site or from the CD-Rom included in your starter kit. Registration Table Ideas Place the preregistration table in a prominent area and surround it with guitars, drums, amps, trussing, old auditorium lights, etc. If you are purchasing the Backstage Passes/CD/Sticker combo for $5 per child you may want to give them their Go Fish Backstage With The Bible CD at this time. This allows them to learn the songs and hear for themselves who the Go Fish Guys are! We also recommend having your leaders wear their Go Fish T-shirts and Backstage Passes at your preregistration event. Promotion Ideas In order to get kids and parents excited about VBS, use our videos from the Let s Sing DVD (included in your starter kit). There are several short videos in the Bonus Features section or just play one of the actual music videos in your church service, Sunday school time, or midweek activities. Just watching a video will hopefully let everyone know that this isn t your typical VBS! Following Preregistration Gather your registration forms and begin to form your Backstage Groupies (see following pages for Backstage Groupie Roster Forms). 18 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

including children with special needs See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:10-11 Children with special needs should be provided with the opportunity to participate in VBS. You may consider communicating in your publications that you welcome children with disabilities. This may require additional planning and communication for that week, but it is no less important than any other component. If you know of children that will be participating in VBS who have special needs, please have a specific person assigned to be the special education coordinator. Someone with special education experience in the public schools would be an ideal fit for this position, whether it is a teacher or assistant. You might not know what needs exist until that first day but it is better to be prepared and have someone ready to help out than turn someone away. This person will be in charge of having any additional materials ready, be the contact person for parents, and be aware of any special equipment, medications, or routines. If you have the opportunity, please meet with the child s parents to discuss what worked best for the child during the school year. The school most likely had a plan in place that may be easily modified or implemented for the week of VBS and the consistency will help pave the way for a successful week. Depending on the number of children with special needs, you may want to have additional staff (Special Education Roadies) to accompany the child in their group. Remember to place children with disabilities in the same age groups with their non-disabled peers, unless you have a specific parent request for a different group. Many times children with disabilities look to their peers to model behavior and are more willing to accept help from their peers than adults. The following page gives suggestions of modifications that you may want to use or pass on to the leaders in charge of these areas. 22 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual

special needs modifications The following are suggestions of modifications that you may want to use or pass on to the leaders in charge of these areas. Schedule/Transitions: Children with autism and processing deficits like to know what to expect and explaining it does not work well. Remember to use First, Then Statements keeping verbal directions to a minimum (i.e. First singing, then craft. ) Visual schedules and visual timers are ideal tools. A picture card is provided on the VBS web site for you to download showing each component of VBS. A leader may want to carry a clipboard with the pictures in order and remove each one as each task/time is completed. Opening Concert/Closing Encore: For children with autism or sensory processing disorders, the noise level might be too much. Good alternatives would be to have a supply of headphones they can use or allow them to participate in the church cry room. Backstage Bible Study: If you find that a child is having a hard time concentrating or sitting still, offer the child a short movement break like a walk around the church. Some children also benefit from the weight of carrying a backpack with heavy books while on their movement breaks. Intermission (Games): Games tend to be explained with several multi-step verbal directions. Remember to model each game and provide a visual example of what is to be done for those who struggle with processing. Backstage Set Design (Crafts): Children with less developed motor skills or sensory needs may not want to use certain items or handle certain textures. Don t force this. Allow them to make variations (i.e. staple instead of glue, rip with hands instead of cut with scissors) or participate in another craft. Backstage Catering and Talent Discovery (Snack): Along with the increase in allergies, many children have a gluten or dairy free diet. Allow children to bring their own snack in order to prevent any health concerns. Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual 23

First Day of VBS On the first day of VBS Make sure you have plenty of volunteers positioned at all entryways to welcome kids and answer questions from parents. Have all of your staff wear their Go Fish t-shirts and emphasize how important it is for them to be excited, welcoming, and polite to the kids and parents. This is your first chance to show Christ s love to these families! Give each Roadie Group Leader a large poster board with their group number on it so that as kids arrive and are registered, they can find their Groupie by finding the poster. Make sure to have signs posted for advance registrations, new registrations, drop-offs and pick-ups. Either post signs with arrows to the various locations or have volunteers posted at entryways to help guide parents and kids. Preschool Backstage Registration Have a Go Fish Party Like A Preschool CD playing by this location and when kids are registered, make sure someone is there to walk each child to the appropriate location. Preregistered Backstage Registration Identify clearly the area for kids who are preregistered to check in. Provide volunteers with an alphabetized master list of all preregistered kids. Make sure the master list shows which Groupie the child will report to. New Backstage Registration Identify clearly the area for kids who have not yet registered. Provide the registration forms, copies of Groupie rosters (by age level), and pens for each table. Each day have a check-in table where kids and parents can check in. Make sure to update your master list daily. This can also be where new kids can register each day. 24 Go Fish Backstage With The Bible Director s Manual
