2 JUNE / JULY Discovering Clay This class is designed to introduce students to the hand building processes of pinch, coil and slab. Through teacher demonstration and individual instruction, students will learn how to create work using these techniques. All of our work will be made using self-hardening clay. Surface decoration will utilize paints applied by various methods. Students will be able to try out ideas of their own. Individuals with previous experience are also welcome. Tuesdays: June 28, July 5, July 26, August 2 9:30 am-10:30 am - $250 Story Art (Ancient Art Edition) Have you ever wanted to learn the fine arts of the ancients? Let's explore ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman mythology through story and art! We will combine a variety of art techniques to create an Egyptian portrait, design a Greek story vase, and design a Roman coin out of clay. Instructor: Danielle Schmitt Tuesdays: June 28, July 5, July 19, July 26, August 2 11:00 am-12:00 pm - $200 Dancing with the Stars! Beginner steps of Swing, Waltz, and Tango are learned and practiced in a supportive atmosphere. This class effectively prepares participants for social events, as well as incorporating the following benefits: exercise, focus, dynamic relationship skills, communication, trust, compassion and collaboration. Instructor: Sharyn Farrell Wednesdays: June 29, July 6, July 13, August 3, August 10, August 17, August 24 10:00 am-11:00 am - $250 Kung Fu Hip Hop Kick, punch and dance your way to fitness and fun with this innovative program. Kung Fu Dance is a high energy mix of martial arts, acrobatics and hip hop dance for men and women. Participants will learn how to use foam nunchucks and perform kick and punch combinations. Along with the Kung Fu, participants will perform basic hip hop and jazz movements and some light acrobatics. No special equipment necessary, just come ready to have fun! 3 JUNE / JULY Musical Theater Students will learn songs from popular musicals and choreography (dances) to those songs. In addition, students will have the opportunity to play theater games and do acting skits. Instructor: Apollo Smile Wednesdays: June 29, July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, August 3, August 10, August 17 1:00 pm-2:00 pm - $275 Working with Oil Pastels Oil pastels are fun to use and produce beautifully colored drawings. The pastels are very forgiving because colors can be layered and blended allowing the person using them to make changes easily. Drawings made on dark colored backgrounds can be very dramatic. A different lesson will be presented each week; however, students are welcome to explore their own choice of subject matter. Thursdays: June 30, July 7, 10:00 am-11:00 am - $70 Write Your Life There are many ways in which we can tell our life's story. Usually that story is made up of a series of events or people that have important meaning to use. In this class, students will choose an important event that is essential to their life's story-and then write about that event or person. All participants will receive a small amount of weekly homework. Sample assignments include: writing a paragraph, giving thought to an assigned topic, or finding family photos. All abilities welcome, no experience is required. 4 JULY / AUGUST Japanese Brush Painting Did you ever wonder how Asian style paintings are made? In this class, you will learn about the art of Japanese Brush Painting and get to practice with assistance and on your own. You will learn the brush strokes to create beautiful bamboo, orchid, and plum blossom forms using bamboo brushes, ink, and watercolor. Instructor: Danielle Schmitt Thursdays: July 7, July14, July 21, July 28, August 8, August 11 11:00 am-12:00 pm - $200 Vista Voices Participants in Vista s choral group receive professional voice and song instruction. The group will work on a holiday-themed program to be shared with the community. These performances are guaranteed to be enjoyable for both singers and audiences. Singing experience is not required. Instructors: Carolyn Engle, Noah Golden Thursdays: July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, August 11, August 18, August 25 7:00 pm-8:15 pm- $250 Marker Mania Who hasn t used markers? In this series of classes, students will be introduced to a different marker technique each week, then use that technique in making a specific project. We will learn how to turn markers into paint, use markers to create lookalike stained glass panels, personalize summer picnic ware and pair markers with watercolor paints to make some spectacular cards. Saturdays: July 9, July 23, July 30, August 6 10:00 am-11:00 am - $125 Beeswax Candle Rolling and Intro to the World of Honeybees Honeybees and beekeeping has become one of the hottest topics in today's world news. This class focuses specifically on how honeybees create beeswax in the hive, and how a beeswax candle can bring more health and joy into your life! It's not just a candle, it's a beautiful slower and cleaner burning air purifier! You will roll one to two candles, depending on size you choose. Come have fun and learn some new things about the honeybees! Instructor: Sharyn Farrell Monday: July 11, 5:00 pm-6:30 pm - $50

5 AUGUST Paper Sculpture Here is a chance to learn how to create a three-dimensional work of art with paper. This is not a paper mache class or a box making class. We will start by making paper and/or pasteboard shapes, adding color and designs, then joining them to create unique sculptures. Students will complete one sculpture per class. Thursdays: July 28, August 4, 10:00 am-11:00 am - $70 Make a Scene! This interactive theatre class offers students the opportunity to create characters, action, and dialogue using basic improvisation skills. Class size limited to 12. Instructor: Pat Souney Fridays: August 5, August 12 4:00 pm-6:00 pm - $40/session Make Your Own Chocolate! Just 3 ingredients and 20 minutes will get you some of the most decadent chocolate ever! We will show you how to combine raw honey, cocoa and coconut oil for a rich and delicious treat, to give as a gift or keep for yourself. You will also learn some phenomenal recipe variations, like peanut butter swirl, chocolate crisp, s'mores in the middle, and more! 6 OUR INSTRUCTORS Alice Chittenden holds a BFA degree from the University of Hartford and a MALS from Wesleyan University. She has studied at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, the Penland School of Crafts and Alfred University. Her work is in the collections in China and private collections in the UK, Australia and U.S. She maintains her own studio and is part of the Shoreline Arts Trail. Carolyn Engle is a professional cellist, pianist, and organist and teaches music in public and parochial schools as well as privately in her home. Carolyn is a second-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, writes children's books, and loves roller coasters. Sharyn Farrell, with over 13 years of dance experience in choreographing, teaching and being a student herself, has a passion for dance! Sharyn is excited to share her enthusiasm and passion for dance with Vista and get everyone moving in creative ways! Noah Golden is a lifelong Shoreline resident and graduate of Quinnipiac University. A video producer and writer by day, Noah has also been involved in the arts all his life. As an actor, singer and drummer, Noah has been involved with dozens of productions and concerts across CT. Noah is excited to bring many years of experience and training to the Vista community. Amanda Roberts and Jess Lillge - Amanda is the Quality of Life Manager and Jess is the Quality of Life Coordinator at Vista. They bring years of experience working with such mediums as film, graphic design, clay and theater. Jocelyn Ruggiero is a professional writer whose work has appeared in The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Food and Wine, Parade Magazine, Saveur and Yankee Magazine. She has been a guest on WFSB s Better Connecticut and a multitude of radio programs. She is also author of the blog "Foodie Fatale." Danielle Schmitt is an avid storyteller and visual artist. She has experience teaching art in public schools and is a published children's book illustrator. She looks forward to sharing her love of storytelling and art making with the Vista community. Apollo Smile has over 35 years in the Performing Arts, she has danced with Alvin Ailey in NYC, been the recipient of a Gold record as a recording artist for Geffen/DGC, appeared as a stuntwoman for numerous film and tv shows and has been a voice actress for Japanese animation and video games. She has been a dance instructor for Vista for the past several years. Pat Souney is a consultant, teacher and award-winning director with both BFA and Masters Degrees in theatre. She has worked with Vista for 10 years leading various performing arts clubs and classes, directing variety shows and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Wizard of Oz and The Pirates of Penzance. Pat has staged over 350 plays and musicals for various community, educational and college theatres. She is a member of Dramatists Guild and a Life Member of the New England Drama Council.
