1 FROM THE PRINCIPAL SPORTS DAY We enjoyed another great Horizon community event yesterday with a great turn out to our sports day. I was pleased with the high level of student attendance and it was excellent to have so many families represented, supporting the students. Well done to Miss Mary Heslop, Miss Kate Whittall and Mr Bill Greenslade and the staff team for their organization and running of the day. Special thanks to our house leaders who managed their teams so well. Special thanks also to our team of caterers the hot dogs, drinks and canteen food looked after us well. It was good to see the high level of participation and competition and the many new records were a highlight. Congratulations to all competitors and well done to the Yellow Curlews! (pictured celebrating). The final results were: Yellow: 1198, Red: 1030, Blue: 985, Green: 910 Week 8 Newsletter: 19 March 2015 DIARY DATES Year 3Z excursion Friday 20 March Harmony Day Friday 20 March Year 4 Camp Wednesday 25-Friday 27 March Foundations visiting the Kindy Tuesday 24 March SACE Art show Year 11 and 12 Wednesday 25 March SACSA Secondary Athletics Thursday 26 March Casual Clothes Day Friday 27 March PARENT/ TEACHER INTERVIEWS: Please make a booking if you would like to participate in our important parent/ teacher interviews to held on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th April from 3:30pm to 7pm. They showed great determination and had positive attitudes, although faced by an older and much more experienced team. The boys were defeated on paper, but through their own, and the other team s, excellent sportsmanship, had a great game. There were several amazing wickets taken and some awesome batting work holding the crease while faced by some fantastic bowlers from Faith. A great effort all round. 3 Page 3 Lost Property We have a large amount of lost property, both uniforms and casual clothes. The value of lost uniforms is $ We have 6 knitted jumpers, 4 sports jumpers, 4 sports jackets, 3 pair shorts, PLUS 8 pairs of goggles, 3 swimming towels, 5 zip jackets, 1 pair jeans, 1 pair leggings, 3 T-shirts and one top. Open girls cricket at Gladstone The girls travelled to Gladstone to play Pt Augusta in the knockout open girls cricket competition, with winner of this match to play in the final held in Adelaide. This was their first chance to play after winning their previous match by default, as Renmark forfeited. It was an extremely close match with Pt Augusta winning by only 4 runs. A target of 89 was set and our girls fell just short needing to score 10 off the last over, finishing at 9/85 of their 20 overs. In the field Paige (3), Bianca (2) and Blessing (1) shared the wickets between them, helped by some great catching by Casey. Top score batting was by opener, Brittany with 11, followed closely by Bianca and Blessing both with 7. It was a great game and all the girls encouraged each other and played well as a team. There is always next year girls! Pictured left at back: Brittany, Bianca, Rachel, Paige, Lacee, Ashlen, Casey and Blessing. Front row: Millicent, Candace and Cheyanne. Senior student Mike is shaving his head on Friday 27th March 2015, to raise money for this very worthy charity. In support of this a casual clothes/crazy hair day will be held on Friday 27th March, as an extra casual clothes day for the term. The gold coin donations for the chance to wear casual clothes will go to the Leukaemia Foundation. There will be hair colour available for students to buy for a gold coin from the school, and all money from the casual clothes day and the hair colour sales will go directly to the Leukaemia Foundation. Uniforms for sale Size 12 winter skirt (hardly worn) Size grey pants Size 4 culottes Culottes size (hardly worn) $50 $15 $30 $50 Uniforms can be viewed at the school office. Page 3 Easter Trading Table Once again we will be holding our Easter Trading table in the main street of Balaklava on Thursday 2nd of April from 9am. This has been a very popular stall, and a great money maker for the school. This year it will be run by the Middle School Leaders. We welcome donations of produce or home baked items. All baked items require the following on them: list of ingredients and date baked. Items can be brought into the school before 9am, or delivered down the street (near TAD's Embroidery). Thank you for your assistance. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding the stall.
4 Page 4 Last week our students were privileged to listen to Lucy Bowden who is an Australian Triathlete from Mount Barker in South Australia. Lucy was a brilliant equestrian horse rider until a bad fall resulted in her having to choose between horses or Triathlons. Since 2013 she has won numerous age group races within Australia and was selected to compete in a World Class event in Canada. Miss Kate Whittall one of our PE teachers is friends with Lucy and arranged the event. Pictured are our students listening to a presentation by Lucy, and insert is Lucy competing. Beau the autism assistant dog The Hamann family recently welcomed Beau, the Autism Assistance Dog, to their home. Beau provides assistance for Josiah whilst walking through public places, shopping, walking through busy places, areas without secure boundaries and providing companionship. Beau wears a jacket when working and is commanded by his adult owner, so please resist patting Beau when you see him. Pictured are Josiah s Mum, Cathy, Beau and Josiah. At home, Beau does not wear his jacket and is a family dog. Mark and Cathy have attended three weeks of intensive training and receive ongoing support at home. Susan, the Guide Dog trainer, travels regularly to Balaklava taking Beau and Josiah shopping, for walks and to school. Susan will be sharing at assembly on Friday, come and hear about the great work the Guide Dogs are doing. Student Leaders commissioning at assembly this week During our whole school assembly this week, we will be commissioning ALL our students leaders. This includes Prefects, Middle and Year 6 leaders, House Captains and Vice Captains. These students will need to be wearing their full summer uniform on the day, so if they have sport that day, they will need to bring their summer uniform to school to change into before assembly. Assembly will be at 2:15pm in the Horizon Centre. Everyone is most welcome to join us for this assembly, (and any other assemblies). Year 3/4 students have been doing drawings of bees with Mrs Lockwood. Don t they look fantastic!
5 On Wednesday, 11th March, Nick and Declan competed in an Interschool Tennis Tournament in Adelaide. Both boys did well against some very strong competition. Declan won both of his qualifying matches to advance to the Round of 16, however, he lost in a very tight match. Nick won one of his qualifying games and went into the play off round and won one of his two matches. Well done to both boys on a great day of tennis! (Both of these boys also competed in the recent Balaklava Swimming Pool triathlon last weekend. Nick s time was 1 hour 26 in the Hare category and Declan s time was 48:16 minutes in the Wombat category). Pictured right are Lyall (with Heather s planter box) and Montana and Dakoda with their planter boxes. On Mondays, five senior school students travel to Clare to participate in The Shed. The Shed is run by Barossa Lower North Futures Inc. The students enjoy practical activities such as woodwork, laying pavers, mechanics to name a few, as well as completing the theoretical side of the activities. They also participate in Occupational Health and Safety training and may gain safe work place certificates. Thank you to our volunteer bus drivers who have made this possible for our students. Police Checks We encourage parents to come and assist in the school, with class reading, excursions and camps. However, to be eligible to do this you will require a current Police Check. Police Checks can be obtained easily and free of charge through the school with our volunteer number. 1. Go to: 2. Take your 100 points of ID with your completed form to your local Police Station for verification and stamping. 3.
