2 CHAPTER DIRECTORS Hi Everyone! While I wasn't looking, summer passed and left me with memories of cool and rain-filled days, yet we managed to gather some sunshine and have a good time. Though Smart View is closed, the chapter picnic at Bobby and Barbara's was "full-filling" and relaxing. We especially enjoyed gathering on the porch and chatting while our meal settled. Emil's ride, always a treat, offered an opportunity to see the country-side and tour the C&O Museum. The weather was perfect, the tour very interesting, and there was a Dairy Queen on the route home! What more could you want? With July behind us, I am now looking forward to attending the Brennan picnic at the lake (Sat., Sept. 24th). That trip is also scenic and the food is always good; the games fun. We should bring our own chairs, a covered dish, and a gift for the Chinese exchange. Greg & Diana will also want to get a close head-count so they know how much to prepare for the main dish. This is important as I will be going early to help get things ready and if Greg works me hard, I will be hungry so PLEASE let them know or sign up at the meeting. Still looking forward, those of you who are attending the "Wings" Rally in N.C. (Sept. 26th- 28th), be sure you are registered and have your hotel plans. The sooner the better. And now, our favorite event, the Rally In The Valley in October! Again, it is important to get registered if you have not done so. Please remember that we still need volunteers to help with security at the gates. As always, it will be a great deal of fun with some new events this year. Obviously, with the regular activities and all of these events scheduled, the coming months promise to keep you as busy as you want to be and having fun with people you enjoy. Bob & Betty Karnes CHAPTER DIRECTORS HOW DOES IT STAY UP? Last month I discussed static stability. This month lets discuss one aspect of dynamic stability. Imagine yourself riding your motorcycle on a perfectly straight highway at 60 mph. Suppose a 10 mph gust of wind comes along at right angles (i.e. - orthogonal) to your bike. Sketch A shows the resulting direction from the disturbance by combining the two velocities. The lines with the arrows in the sketch are called vectors. A vector has two properties direction and magnitude. A vectors arrow shows its direction and its length is proportional to how large it is. By applying trigonometry two vectors can be combined (i.e. - called the product) into a resulting vector. Now suppose you slow down to 10 mph and another gust of wind comes along. This angular disturbance is shown in Sketch B. Notice the resultant vector in Sketch B is changing the path of the motorcycle by 45 compared to 10 in Sketch A. The conclusion - The faster you ride the less effect small orthogonal disturbances have on your desired direction of travel. But, let s be clear - riding faster doesn t mean you are riding safer. Of course not, it does however help keep your motorcycle on its intended path. And I ll bet you never thought of that until now. We close this discussion with a quiz on what we just discussed. That is Suppose you are riding on a straight highway at 60 mph and notice dust being stirred up by gusty winds blowing across the road. Should you: a-speed up to 80 mph, b-slow down to 35 mph, c- Maintain your present speed, d-stop and wait for the wind to die down, or e-use the motorcycle wisdom you have from your past years of riding to determine how to deal with this situation. When the waitress asks for his order he says, Two headlights and two wheels please. The waitress tired and in a bad mood because she s been working all night says with a trace of sarcasm, What are you talking about? The rider replies, "Just tell the cook he'll know what I mean. The waitress yells to the cook, "I got this weird one who thinks you'll know what he wants if he orders two head lights and two wheels". Yeah I know what he wants, replies the cook; He wants two eggs sunny side up and two pancakes. No problem. The attitude of the rider and cook really bothers the waitress, so, just before breakfast is served to the rider, she slams down on the table a big plate of chili beans. "Here, "she yells for all to hear, "here's you chili. The surprised rider answers back, I didn t order this. The waitress is ready for this and replies, I thought you would want to gas up before you took off." Humor CRASH SCENE RESPONSE This article is a repeat from 3/6/12. Why is it necessary?-to suggest an appropriate course of action when a crash has occurred and to prepare our members to respond with knowledge and confidence. CPR/ First Aid Training is helpful at this time. First Aid kits should be carried on your bike, and roles and responsibilities at the scene are important. Teamwork is important and there should be a scene coordinator, traffic control, first responders, and communications. Coming upon an accident is traumatic, but we need to respond immediately and correctly. Stop or direct traffic as soon as possible, and be sure to be out of harm s way. Scene coordinator (drag bike) takes charge and assigns tasks. Stay calm and cool and immediately use the SETUP process: 9/6/2013 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 OF 10 Pub. 148
4 STOP- Access the scene ENVIRONMENT - Identify limitations and hazards at the scene TRAFFIC- Evaluate the traffic situation UNKNOWN HAZARDS-Consider potential hazards that may not be readily apparent PROTECT SELF and VICTIMS As soon as the site is secured, aid the first responders in assessing the victim and make sure the communications coordinator has the information necessary to activate emergency response teams where are we? look for signs or mileage markers as you re riding. If you are directing traffic stand as though you mean business and point with authority. First responders should assess the scene, victims and evident injuries being sure to check each person. If there are several injuries, you must decide who is in most need and respond accordingly. Priority has to take place; personal feelings have to take a back seat. First Responders use the SAMPLE method to obtain information: *S- Signs/symptoms-through observation *A- Allergies *M- Medications, Med Alert bracelets, emergency info list on person. *P- Physician or medical history. *L- Last time they had anything to eat or drink. *E- Events leading up to the crash. Write it all down to keep it straight. Is there a contact person? If possible leave everything as is. Take pictures. They are very important to the police. When police arrive they will secure the area. Most police and firefighters will let you know what they need, otherwise, get out of their way and let them do their jobs. Do not leave in case they need to ask you questions. When it s over Assist with accident reports or provide information as requested. Check each other out- anyone of the team in shock? Ride to the nearest rest area or restaurant and talk it out! DO NOT keep it inside. Hope this is helpful Diana and Gregg Brennan CHAPTER K EDUCATORS REGION N DIRECTORS Hello Region N, It s the time of the year when motorcycling is usually at its peak vacationing, ice cream rides, chapter visitations, and many other excuses to ride your camel. Due to the monsoon season around here, we ve been pretty limited. But even that can t stop the enjoyment of spending some quality time with our friends. It s also a time to begin reflecting on accomplishments, or possibly a lack of meeting some of our personal goals. And there are expectations that others have of us that need to fit into the mix. I hope you can realize it as a time to grow, refresh some ideas, and create some better and smarter ways to accomplish more with less. A wise prophet wrote, The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it. A modern interpretation might be, The wise see what s not working, what seems to be dying or discouraging or damaging to others, and makes the decision to change direction away from the source of the discouragement. But the simple minded (the not so wise, the lazy) continue moving in the same direction of decline, hoping for things to just change themselves, but they ll suffer eventual failure. These words and this philosophy are a lot easier to read than to put into actual practice. The biggest problem with making a change of direction is that you may not see the fruits of 9/6/2013 CHAP K NEWSLETTER PAGE 4 OF 10 Pub. 148
5 that tough decision for years, if ever. It s like playing the childhood game of what if, where you decide that if you can hold your breath until the next car goes by your house, you ll somehow pass your final exam. We never see the BAD stuff that could have happened but didn t because of a good decision. We might not see the crash we avoided by accidently making a wrong turn that made us 10 minutes late getting to that intersection. There are also varying degrees of success, ranging from dodging an unseen bullet to utopia. Obviously, we shoot for the moon, but when we only hit the top of a tree, maybe that s all we could realistically hope for. Perhaps the next guy in line is supposed to add onto what we ve accomplished, and build a bigger tower with a higher target in sight. So do we spend our lives second guessing every turn and every decision? Certainly, hind-sight is and will always be 20/20. We can t un-ring the bell, we can t untoot the horn, or un-say the unkind word. But we CAN learn during those times when the undesired and unexpected out-come slaps us in the face. And I hope none of us are too big to admit mistakes, or to say I m sorry. The last time I looked, GWRRA has no professional chapter, district, region or national directors in any program. We re all volunteers, just trying to serve our members the best we can. HAVE MERCY!!! Looking for leaders in all the right places!!! Working for you, Alan and Carolyn Little GWRRA Region N Directors GWRRA-RALLY IN THE VALLEY EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT! Lifestyle behaviors responsible for the majority of today s diseases! Inactivity, Obesity Are Killing Americans! More deaths expected from sedentary lifestyle and obesity than smoking! Diet, Lifestyle May Affect Eye Health! Lifestyle Behaviors May Influence Alzheimer's Risk! Cancer, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes are the four most common types of diseases that result from lifestyle-related (or non-communicable) behaviors. These are the most common conditions that we suffer from due to unhealthy living. In other words by living unhealthy lifestyles, we can actually damage our healthy genes and have them turned against us! You may be thinking that lifestyle-related diseases are not likely to affect you, and hopefully you are right. The good news is that the above lifestylerelated diseases can almost always be avoided by simply eating nutritious diet, getting regular exercise, not smoking and drinking in moderation. Well this is true most of the time; however, our health can also be damaged by living in unhealthy or polluted environments. Following a balanced health plan to include good eating and daily activity is the key to dramatically reducing the most common lifestyle related diseases. And the greatest side effect is more vim, vigor and productivity. But balance is important, and one can t live without the other. If you have the best diet, but get no physical activity or if you smoke, it is going to impact your heart health. GWRRA NATIONAL RALLY IN THE VALLEY 2013 This is a reminder. If you haven t already done so fill out the registration form at the back of this newsletter and send it in. SEE YOU AT THE RALLY.
