1 Rincon Country West RV Resort 4555 S. Mission Rd., Tucson, AZ Business Office: Activity Office: December, 2007 Volume 24 Number 3 activities@rinconcountry.com Christmas Dinner Join our RCW family for a family-style dinner on Christmas Day at 1:00 pm. in the Auditorium. It works this way: We will have tables for 16 people. Each table will have a sign up sheet designating a host and hostess. The park will furnish a ham for each table. The remainder of the meal will be provided by you. The host and hostess should have an organizational meeting with the table members, so that you can modify the menu to suit your particular taste. Decorate your table as much or as little as you choose. Remember, this is your Christmas Dinner so bring out the china or use the paper plates - it should be anything that makes you happy! You may decide to fill an entire table with close friends and neighbors, or you may wish to sit at a table and make new friends. Either way, we encourage you to join us for Christmas Dinner and some old fashioned fellowship. Table sign-up sheets are in the Activity Office, and everyone who plans to attend must have their name on one of the sheets. New Year s Eve Dance Another year is upon us and it doesn t seem possible that we have been celebrating the New Year together since 1984 when the park opened. The dress code will be everything from casual wear to your normal New Year s Eve glitz and everything in between. Whatever you to wear, the important thing is to have a wonderful evening. Visit our website at and click on the box to sign up for our E-News Bulletin. Annette, Office Manager Picture Directory It has been over seven years since our last park Picture Directory. I am really excited because I have finally found someone who will do the directory. The Church directory people will no longer do directories for RV Parks because they claim that RVers never buy the pictures. I did try to explain that you were purchasing pictures from them at your church, but they still won t do the directory. The good news is that Olan Mills out of Phoenix will do a directory for us.... BUT they too, expect some of us to purchase some pictures. So, if you have your pictures taken at church, please consider not buying them there for this one summer and do buy them here this winter. Olan Mills will give you a free 8 x 10 photo and a free park directory just for having your picture taken. Therare two ways to make your appointment, online from a direct link from our website: or through the Activity Office. We are currently making appointment. The schedule we have set up is as follows: December 3, 4 & 5, 2007 January 15, 16, 17, 18 & 19, 2008 Practice smiling and save some of your digital pictures of park activities because we may need them in our directory. Antibiotics are NOT recommended for preventing travelers diarrhea. You can develop an allergic reaction by taking a preventive antibiotic for a long period of time. Your risk of contracting an antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria also increases. (Such as the dreaded skin-eating bacteria or MERSA). And you still aren t protected against viruses or parasites, other major causes of diarrhea. Instead of antibiotics, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) recommends taking two pills or liquid doses four times a day of a medicine containing bismuth subsalicylate, such as Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate. In addition to reducing diarrhea, bismuth subsalicylate also appears to have an antibacterial effect and it doesn t build up your body s antibiotic resistance. If you have a true aspirin allergy or are taking blood thinners, have an impaired immune system, or have been taking corticosteroids, check with your doctor first. The best way to avoid travelers diarrhea is to drink bottled or treated water (stay away from ice cubes) and to pass on raw foods and street vendors offerings. NOTE: It s common to stop certain medications before surgery, but many people assume that it s safe to continue taking herbal and vitamin supplements. That s not the case. Supplements may inhibit healing and prolong bleeding and the effects of anesthesia. For example, white bark and meadowsweet plant contain salicylic acid a precursor to aspirin. Supplements can also interact with drugs prescribed after surgery. Tell your doctor about any supplements you take so you ll know if and when to stop. Many should be discontinued 2 to 3 weeks before surgery. (Excerpts from Johns Hopkins)

17 Tennis Club We who have been here for the past month, are amazed with the new surface on our two new tennis courts. It is a product like Astro Turf but it plays like clay. It is wonderful on the knees and other body parts. George, you did good. Thank you. For all you new people and particularly new tennis players, play generally starts at about 8:30 am and consists of mixed up doubles, with everyone getting a chance to play. We play Monday through Saturday. We even have a resident Pro who will give instructions upon request. Show up in the morning and if you find your niche, set up your own matches for later in the day. The mixed up doubles last until 11:00 am. Everyone furnishes a can of balls occasionally. Golfing Events TUESDAY & THURSDAY Since our new season has started at RCW we have Tuesday s open golf. This is open to men and women. Sign-up sheet is in the coffee room. Thursday s group play for men. Their sign-up sheet is also in the coffee room. We wish to extend an invitation to anyone interested in any facet of garden railroading to come to our meetings and by all means stop by the RCW Garden Railroad layout located at the end of the boulevard and talk to our members anytime. Trains are already running for the season! Park residents can always check the train schedule posted at the layout to learn when trains are running. Work is progressing on the train depot and hopefully it will be completed by the first of the year. Once lighting of miniature buildings in the layout is completed, look for the running of trains at night for a spectacular new experience! The club would also like to thank park residents for their generous donations of items for the November RCW parking lot sale and also for your words of encouragement and advice as our members work at the layout. Spanish Conversation Fridays at 3 pm in Class Room 2, we will meet to have conversations in Spanish. Come and help us organize the meetings and offer suggestions. Nancy Paulson Sig Melton

I could tell you that it has a lot of fun & interesting people, which it does, or that you ll be learning something new, which you will, but there s also the WOW factor... when you find an ancestor you never expected to find on a Ships List or on a Census List from way back when & suddenly you have another piece of the puzzle as to who you really are...one of the many different parts that make up YOU. 21 Library News The Friends of the Library book sale snatched me up again in spite of my good resolutions. I brought home two bags of books, one of which contained eight large print editions for the library, a wide variety. Something for everyone I hope: W.E.B. Griffin s, Fighting Agent, Patterson s Protect and Defend, Baldacci s Split Second, Dale Brown s Battle Born, Faye Kellerman s Jupiter s Bones, Rendell s Adam and Eve, Toni Morrison s Beloved, and a non fiction by Ken Carey, Flat Rock Journal. If you have gone through all our large print materials, Mission Library at Mission and Ajo has a fine selection. If you take a piece of mail showing your RCW address and picture ID, they will issue you a free library card. They are really lovely people there. New donated books continue to flood in so we are right up to the minute. Due to space constraints we can only shelve newer romances, mystery/thrillers newer than eight years and monthly magazines later than January 07. Older issues have to be recycled. On that subject, be sure to look over our discard bin outside the door. It would break my heart to put these wonderful books out there if I didn t know that they are going to people who will love them and pass them on to others. I am pleased to announce that our fifteen wonderful winter volunteers have stepped in to replace our ten super special summer volunteers. They will ensure that your library will continue to be the cozy, welcoming place it has always been. They and I always appreciate your generous compliments on the grand job that they do. Georgean Lucas, Librarian MacIntosh Computer Group Greetings and welcome to all Mac Users at RCW. We have meetings, the RCW MUG, every Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM in Classroom 2. The Apple Computer and its sister components, ipod and iphone have really been getting a lot of attention nationwide. Come share in the fellowship with other Mac Users and join in the informative meetings with reviews of various software and systems updates. See digital photography as its best with a Mac, simple and easy to use. We have knowledgeable users that share their expertise. All are welcome, even the most novice and anyone just wanting to learn about the Mac or is considering a purchase or upgrade. Looking to see you there. Julie Johnson Allan Schreiber Pottery & Ceramics Can t believe Christmas is almost here? Need some special gifts? Stop by the Ceramic/Pottery room and check out all the molds we have to make those special gifts. Or get your hands into the project and roll your own clay or use the wheel for forming your own ideas. Wednesday mornings are Ceramic classes. Thursday afternoons are Pottery classes. Check the sign on the door for the room availability to work on your projects. Meet new friends and catch up with old friends! JoAnn Godawski Secretary 21

22 Cactus Quilters The Cactus Quilters are off to another busy year. We welcome all quilters, new or returning. Our meetings are held Monday afternoons starting at 1:00 pm. Each week we will have a short meeting and our annual Christmas potluck luncheon on December 10 in the Rally Room. We plan to go to Quilters Desert Patch on December 31. For more information on these two events check in the sewing room. Everyone is welcome to come to the working sessions each Thursday where we work on the charity quilts. Watch the sign up sheets for classes that will be offered in December. The sign up sheets are in the Arts & Sewing Room. We look forward to seeing you at our Monday meetings or the Thursday charity workshops. If you have questions, please don t hesitate to call one of the officers. Carlene Nimlos, Secretary Lot 1007, Hardanger Class Hardanger embroidery is a delicate form of open work which originated in Norway many years ago. It gradually spread through out Europe and then to United States. The interest in Hardanger embroidery is growing fast in our country. If you enjoy counted cross stitch or other forms of embroidery you will like Hardanger. You are welcome to stop in our Wednesday class which is in Class Room I. We meet at 9:00-11:00 am. Eleanor Blue - Instructor Crafts and Sewing Here we are, December already! Happy Holidays from the Crafts and Sewing Room. Come in and enjoy the fun offered from our classroom, try something new. There is so much to choose from. Classes are posted weekly with a large selection: painting, beading, quilting, Swedish weaving, calligraphy, gourd art, card making, stamping, scraping and sewing. Don t forget sparkles and hardanger. Classes change every few days, so, check everyday for new ideas and be sure to sign up. The Crafts and Sewing Room is a place to be, so come join us. Swedish Weaving Have you checked out the weekly project for the Swedish Weaving class? The one we will work on that Friday is posted in the class case above the sign up sheet. I supply everything you need to make two placemats, except for yarn that you choose in your choice of color(s), and a pair of scissors. A variegated skein is a good choice for your first project. The class is held in the Arts and Sewing room from 1-4 pm. Everyone who has attended the class is welcome to come back and show us what you have been working on and weave while the class is going on. There will be no classes on December 7th, 28th and January 4th. If you have any questions, contact me at 639K or Judi Reed 22

23 Needlework Knitting, Crocheting, Counted Cross-stitch, Etc. If you have a needlework project you d like to complete, or want to start a new one, feel free to come to the Sewing Room any Wednesday afternoon. We ll be there from 1:00 to 3:00 pm and would love to have you join us. Any questions, call Adeline Bailey Nana s Needles Handworkers Unite!!! A feeble attempt at humor, but last year the handworkers in our park contributed a wonderful number of goodies for the layettes provided to preemies by Newborns in Need. I m sorry now that I didn t count them; however, I know I made at least four or five trips with a whole trunk-load of them and you know the size of my car s trunk! There is a need for everything one considers part of a layette so don t be discouraged from joining us even if you don t knit or crochet. We also solve the problems of the world while we re doing our thing in Classroom 1 on Friday mornings after Coffee. Come, join us. You ll be welcome. Jan Pickard Lot 16, Decorative Painting (made easy) Here s your chance to learn the secrets of basic decorative painting. Come out and see how many design combinations you can make using only three brushes. You d be amazed at how easy it is to put several strokes together to make flowers, vines, colorful border designs, or anything else you might think of. So check out the sample on display in the Crafts and Sewing Room for our January class. We meet 4 Tuesday evenings, 6:30 8:30, beginning January 15 till February 5. Stop by our Dec. 3 or 10 class between 6:30 and 8:30 to see if you d be interested and what we are creating. Ruth Anne Starnes Merry Christmas and Happy New Year ear from The Rincon Country Staff Fabric Painting Come join us and paint a festive Christmas light Tee or sweatshirt. Check out the sample in the Crafts and Sewing Room and sign up. We meet Dec 4 & 5 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. You bring the shirt; I ll bring the paint. Come and see how easy this is! We ll be offering other fabric painting classes too. Ruth Anne Starnes 23
