Adobe Reader We are certain you are already experiencing the excitement that is building for the 14 th Annual Capitol Barbizon Competition. Our entire staff is busily engaged in the final preparations to make this competition a most rewarding and exciting experience. The Barbizon Model & Talent Competition is one of the leading opportunities for discovery in the modeling & talent industry today. Your participation in this event will not only be fun and exciting, but could also open doors to your future. You could win a TRIP to the Passport to Discovery Competition Cruise! A partial AWARDS & PRIZES OPTIONAL WORKSHOPS scholarship will be awarded to each division winner and each 1st winner-up to compete at Passport to Discovery next October. The 2nd winner-up from each division will receive a FULL PHOTO SHOOT (hair, make-up and styling included)! In addition, all competitors will have the opportunity to be seen and evaluated for possible representation by the most esteemed panel of judges in our competition's history! Agents that have attended in past years include ELITE, WILHELMINA, THE ARTIST AGENCY, DNA MODELS, NY MODELS, CLEAR AGENCY, SNOW ENTERTAINMENT AND In order to prepare you for the format of the Barbizon Competition, comprehensive workshops have been set for: o o WORKSHOPS Saturday, May 17 th, 2014 Saturday, May 17th from 11am-5pm Location: Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel (map & directions on page 10). The workshops will concentrate on competition runway, television commercials, and agency etiquette as well as Convention Day and "Business of the Business. Workshops are completely optional, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Parents are also encouraged to attend. Please bring high heels for the runway workshop. Remember - please bring high heels you are comfortable walking in. Do not let the competition day be the first time you are wearing your runway shoes. Dress casual and bring a notebook and pen to take notes. Be sure to pack a light lunch and bottled water, as we will not be taking a scheduled lunch break. 2 2
3 SCHEDULE FOR SUNDAY, MAY 18TH TENTATIVE (remember this is a live show, times are not set in stone!) The 14 th Annual Barbizon Capitol Competition will be held Sunday May 18th, 2014 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel in Alexandria, VA. We strongly recommend leaving personal valuables at home. Lunch will cost you approximately $5-$10 at the hotel or you can bring your own lunch and snacks. Don t forget to bring a few bottles of water. Arrive to rehearsal in casual attire with your hair and makeup already done. Remember to wear your runway shoes to rehearsal! 6:45am: Check-in (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 7:00am - 7:30am: Registration - Be Prompt! (This is when you will receive your contestant number and badge! Also, be sure to bring everything that you will need for the day at this time including lunch.) 7:30am - 8:00am: Orientation (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 8:00am - 10:30am: Rehearsal (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 10:30am - 11:00am: Break Time & Prep (CONTESTANTS ONLY) 11:00am - 4:30pm: SHOWTIME!! 4:30pm - 5:00pm: Awards Ceremony 5:00pm - 6:30pm: Callbacks (CONTESTANTS ONLY) SPECIAL HOTEL ACCOMODATIONS FOR BARBIZON CONTESTANTS ONLY!!!! We recommend making reservations at the official competition hotel should you not be within driving distance of the competition. The Hilton Alexandria Mark Center Hotel in Alexandria, VA is the venue for the competition and where all of the agents and staff will be staying. Barbizon USA has negotiated a discounted rate starting at $99.00 per night for Barbizon contestants and their families. Parking has been discounted to $9.00/daily or $9.00/overnight Individual families are responsible for making their own reservations and payment arrangements directly with the hotel. Please book your room soon, as the block fills on a first-come, first-serve basis. The hotel has a cut-off date of Tuesday, April 15 th to get your room at the discounted rate. If you book your room after that date, you are subject to a rate increase. All charges are your responsibility. 3 3
4 If you have any questions after reading, call the Competition Dept at WARDROBE GUIDELINES: There will be 2 outfits needed for this competition. Your outfits should be upscale and casual in nature. Don't bring any formal or business attire. Your outfits should be AGE APPROPRIATE. Please don't stress or worry about your clothing. As long as you follow these guidelines, you will be fine. This is not a fashion show and you are not being judged or evaluated on your clothing. You are, however, being evaluated on how you present yourself and your model potential (overall image). HAIR & MAKE-UP GUIDELINES: If you re doing your own hair & make-up, please follow these simple guidelines. For WARDROBE Tops should be VIBRANT in color! TV commercial, wear your hair pulled back AWAY from your face. Headbands are acceptable. Your make-up should be very simple and natural. For Runway, you have the freedom to wear more fun and dramatic looks with your hair and make-up. Keep in mind that Solids only! No prints or patterns Skin covered! No tank/tube tops or halters etc. Short sleeves, ¾ sleeves, long sleeves, and jackets are all acceptable Feel free to wear any type of bottom! Jeans, skirts, leggings, shorts, crop pants, etc. are all acceptable in any color! Shoes should be flat!!! No high heels!!! EXAMPLE EXAMPLE HOW IT WORKS For TV Commercial, contestants will appear at the top of the runway and be shown on a LARGE video screen framed from the shoulders up. Your commercial is your opportunity to show off your creativity and true colors! You can create your own commercial or take one right from the television. Remember, it can only be 15 seconds long with NO PROPS or PROP PLACEMENT (i.e. acting like you're holding a cell phone). Be sure to choose age appropriate material. Original, fun & funny scripts ALWAYS score well. Don t be afraid to make up your product and invent a great TV commercial! Singing a commercial is not recommended. 4 4
5 RUNWAY Fashionable outfit must be TEAL, KHAKI, LIME, or WHITE (or any combination of these colors) ONLY! EXAMPLE NO FORMAL or FLOOR LENGTH GOWNS! Shoes may be any kind you wish. Choose a pair you can walk well in and goes with your overall look. Sneakers, heels, boots, sandals, etc. are all acceptable, but they should also be TEAL, KHAKI or WHITE. Brown or black shoes are acceptable as well. EXAMPLE Contestants will walk the runway in one outfit. 5 5
6 HAIR & MAKE-UP A freelance professional hair & makeup team will provide OPTIONAL styling to our contestants. This is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and must be paid directly to the stylist via the form provided in this . All questions and concerns need to be addressed directly with the stylist upon arrival the weekend of the competition. PRIZES & AWARDS Judging will be based on live feed television commercial and runway modeling. You will perform your MEMORIZED ORIGINAL commercial (this can be something from TV or one that you ve made up, and must be 15 seconds maximum with NO PROPS or PROP PLACEMENT). You will perform this commercial live, on stage while being shown on a large video screen. The judging criteria for the commercial will be based on believability, delivery, projection and commercial appeal. The judging criteria for the runway portion will be based on style, grace, and ease of movement. Simple, basic turns are the best. Prizes - The following will be awarded within each division: THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW DIVISION LEADERS WILL BE PRESENT TO GUIDE YOU THROUGHOUT THE DAY OF COMPETITIONS. BRING EVERYTHING YOU WILL NEED FOR THE DAY TO REHEARSAL!!! PARENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE DRESSING ROOMS UNLESS THEIR CHILD IS 12 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER. PARENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE CALLBACK ROOM UNLESS THEIR CONTESTANT IS 12 YEARS OLD OR YOUNGER. IF YOU PLAN TO DO YOUR OWN HAIR & MAKE-UP, IT SHOUD BE DONE WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO REHERSAL AS YOU WILL ONLY HAVE TIME FOR TOUCH-UPS. MAKE-UP SHOULD LOOK CLEAN AND POLISHED. NO WHITE EYELINER OR BRIGHT BARBIE LIPSTICK. SIMPLICITY IS BEST FOR THIS COMPETITION. PARENTS: VIDEO CAMERAS ARE PERMITTED AS WELL AS REGULAR CAMERAS. WE WILL ALSO HAVE PROFESSIONAL DVD S FOR SALE. SEE THE PROMO FORM ON PAGE 12 FOR ORDERING INFORMATION. (10) Honorable Mention Awards (1) 2 nd winner up, (1) 1 st winner up (1) Division Winner A total of 132 WINNERS will receive an award symbolizing their participation in the competition. In addition, $10,000 in scholarship money to Passport to Discovery will be divided amongst the 2 highest point scorers. $26,000 in scholarship money to Passport to Discovery will be divided amongst the 10 division winners. $16,000 in scholarship money will be divided amongst the 10 1 st winner-ups. Each of the 10 2 nd winner-ups will receive a FULL PHOTO SHOOT session with an acclaimed photographer. 6 6
7 PHOTO FORMS: You will need to bring photos of yourself to the competition affixed to the photo form found as a separate attachment in this . These forms will be given to the agents/managers that have expressed interest in you during call-backs. Please do not bring "Glamour Shots." The best photos are not posed, have very little make-up and are only YOU. Please don't bring pictures with other people or pets in them. You need to bring at least 25 photo forms with you the day of the competition. Please do not fax/mail/ them to the Barbizon office. Take headshots, ¾ length shots or full-length shots. Please see the EXAMPLE PHOTO FORM below for an example of how your photo forms should look. The contact information listed on photo forms should be the parent s contact info. MEASUREMENTS: You will need to provide your current measurements on your photo form. Use a soft tape measure to measure your bust, waist, and hips in inches. Bust: measure the circumference of your chest at the fullest part of your bust. (This is NOT your bra size!) Waist: measure the circumference of your waist, which is located above your belly button and below your rib cage. (If you bend to the side, the crease that forms is your natural waistline.) Hips: measure the circumference of your hips, which is around the largest part of your bottom. This form will be distributed in a separate . It is wise to take advantage of the.doc format the photo form is sent in, organize your layout in Microsoft Word with photos attached, and print 25 copies. You can also attach 2 photos and fill out information on one form, then create 25 copies on a copy machine. There are many different ways, do what works best for you! 7 7
8 Are you a singer or dancer?! We are pleased to announce that we will be showcasing singers and dancers at the Barbizon Competition! Requirements include a 1-minute or less submission. It can be recorded in your bedroom, living room or anywhere quiet. Upload your video to or (Make sure that your settings allow you to share your video and that it is not marked as private.) the link to: competition@barbizonusa.com. You will receive a reply via letting you know whether or not you have been selected to perform in the preliminaries. Please do not call or about your results until you have been contacted directly. If you have been selected to perform in the preliminaries, you will do so on Saturday, May 17th directly following the workshops at 4:15pm. This can be in costume if you want. You will perform a 1-minute solo piece. Preliminaries will be on a closed set in front of a panel of judges. Be sure to bring a copy of your music with you to the competition. The talent winner will be notified on Sunday morning during rehearsal and will perform live on stage at some point during the competition in front of the entire audience. Please make sure you have your costume with you the weekend of the competition. There is an additional fee of $125 to participate in the preliminaries. Auditioning/submitting a video is absolutely free and if you are selected, you are not required to compete in the preliminaries. The deadline for video submissions is Friday, April 25 th, Monologue & Improv A select group of agents, managers, and casting directors have requested to see more from our actors and actresses! For those who are serious about acting, there are two OPTIONAL competitions to showcase more of your acting ability: Monologue and Improv. If you choose to participate in Monologue, you will showcase your 30-second memorized monologue. Improv contestants will be provided a scenario to improvise with an acting partner for 30 seconds. Contestants must be available to perform on Saturday afternoon, May 17 th to participate in either event. The top 5 highest scorers will perform Sunday morning, May 18 th, in front of all agents and managers. The cost to compete in the OPTIONAL Monologue or Improv competition is $75 each and must be completed prior to April 25 th to ensure you are on the roster. If you are interested in participating, call the Barbizon Competition department to register. (No video submission necessary.) This competition is for the promotion of our students and grads only. If you would like to participate in the audience - the cost will be $ per person by advanced sale. All tickets should be purchased in advance. Tickets cannot be reserved until payment for the competition is made. Entrance to the event is by ticket admission only for ages 3+. There is limited seating for family and friends. Additional seats or standing room only may be available the day of the show. To ensure you will not be disappointed, make your ticket purchases today! We will not hold tickets! We will sell out to standing room only - be safe and make your ticket purchases today! In the rare event that tickets are still available, you may purchase them at the door by cash or credit/debit card only - ticket sales at the door will be $ / each.
