Marimont moved up from fifth to fourth in the morning and filled in the last finals spot. Cordelia Fike scored on questions 1 and 5 for an early LakePointe lead. Rookie Jordan Johnson got a freebie on question 4 to put OCS on the board. Top quizzer Owen Parker then came to life to nail the next three scores to take the lead for Marimont on question 9. Of course, three scores meant Owen was frozen. The score sat at 4 1 through questions 1, 11 and 12 on two errors and an attempt. So question 13 started with it still being anyone s quiz to win. Curtis Parker got the jump and the answer to extend Marimont s lead. LakePointe needed both of the remaining questions for a tie or the win. Carmen Yonker got the first of those to keep hopes alive. But on question 15, Jordan got the jump and the answer for OCS to end the quiz with Marimont getting the victory - ; - 3; Marimont 2 Disciples - LP Tops Season and Tournament Judging by the season and the morning session, the two LakePointe teams were evenly matched for the top spot, and Heart was a solid third. Top quizzer Gloria Mayer scored first for Silent. Sophia Fike responded for The Greeks. Gloria scored again before Jessica Matthews put Heart on the board. Sophia scored again, and Jessica got a freebie, so the score was a close after question 1. Sophia scored again to freeze and give the Greeks their first out-right lead. Jessica scored another freebie, keeping the score close at Question 13 ended with Sophia getting a freebie to give the Greeks a 3-point lead. Now it was do-or-die time for Silent and Heart one of them needed both remaining questions to win. After calling a time-out, Gloria went for it on question 14 and came up short. Jessica won the jump on the toss-up and nailed a Finish This Verse and Reference. Question 15 started with the score Surely there would be a blistering fast jump by someone. This was Varsity. Yes, there were three rookies on the pads, but there were more veterans and they surely knew the old adage Better to lose in the air than in your chair. 5 Chicago Tournament 17 This year s version of the Chicago Tournament was without a JV division, so DBQ s three JV teams got to join DBQ s two Varsity teams quizzing in the Varsity division. The leaders of each of the five teams made it into the All Star rankings; indeed, Owen Parker was Tournament Top Quizzer. So performance-wise, you really couldn t tell who was JV and who was Varsity. The post-tournament buzz included that the level of competition was amazing. For perspective on that, note that DBQ won the Varsity championship the prior three years in a row but failed to place a team in the Finals this year. So game on for next season, everyone.
