2018 UTPB FALCON COLOR GUARD Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the future UTPB Falcon Color Guard!!! No other performing unit can add the color, motion, and field coverage that is provided by a color guard. The UTPB Marching Falcon Band seeks a group of dynamic performing men and women who can consistently provide these elements. Auditions for the 2018 UTPB Falcon Color Guard will be held on Saturday, April 21, These auditions will begin at 9:00a.m. in the UTPB Gymnasium Complex: 1 st floor main gym. The UTPB Falcon Color Guard will hold one audition day for the 2018 UTPB Marching Band season. Fall guard auditions are open to any student who is presently attending UTPB, any incoming freshmen who will be attending UTPB in the fall, or any student in the process of transferring from another higher educational institution. The goal of the UTPB Falcon Color Guard is to provide an opportunity for students to participate in representing their school, and maintain and build a performance group. The color guard is a unit that teaches teamwork and performance skills, while building confidence and selfesteem. In colorguard, we emphasize training in the student s ability to spin, dance, and perform. It is very much so a group activity, so learning to perform together is the ultimate goal (along with having fun of course!). Most importantly, membership to the Color Guard is a privilege, not a right. All members need to remember who they represent. When they are out for performances, not only do they represent themselves, but they are part of a large team; the UTPB FALCON MARCHING BAND. Members need to remember that they are considered exemplary students. This should show in their in-class behavior, their out-of-class behavior, their grades, and their attitude. Members of the UTPB colorguard are asked to make a commitment to the program through their time and effort. As a member, you are required to commit to the rehearsal and performance schedule, and you are required to show up on time. You are also expected to follow all of the behavioral rules set forth by UTPB, the course guidelines outlined in the marching band syllabus, and to respect your instructors and peers.
The UTPB Color Guard is open to any individual, male or female, that is a full-time or a part-time student at UTPB, and is enrolled in marching band. Previous experience on a color guard is preferred, but is not necessary: we are looking for potential, not perfection in the audition. At the time of the audition, the candidate does not have to be fully admitted at that time; however, an application for admissions must be in the process of being reviewed by the admissions department. If you are not a fully accepted student at UTPB at the time of the audition, you will need to provide proof that your application has been submitted and is under review. Rehearsal/Audition Guidelines All candidates will experience a morning group class in movement and flag that includes fundamentals along with choreography. After a lunch break, there will be a brief review and then the audition will proceed in small groups. Auditions will conclude by midafternoon. This process will take most of the day, so plan your schedule accordingly. Candidates may either bring their lunch or bring money to dine at nearby local food establishments. All candidates are asked to wear dark appropriate rehearsal attire for all rehearsals; all black is preferred. In order to dance and spin, you will need to wear clothing that allows you to move. Jeans are not to be worn for rehearsals; please wear pants/shorts that you can dance in. Appropriate rehearsal attire is required; if you show up with clothing that is deemed unappropriated, you will be asked to leave. You should be in rehearsal attire before practice. Appropriate rehearsal attire includes: o comfortable workout attire- NO JEANS. o tennis shoes or dance shoes are required. o hair must be pulled back and secure. o no jewelry should be worn at rehearsal. o Stud earrings are acceptable. All candidates are asked to wear dark clothing to the auditions; all black is preferred. This will allow the judges to see the equipment better against the body and to see the line of the body in the dance/movement portion of the audition. Communication with the guard director is required if a guard member is going to be late or absent. All candidates are asked to bring their own equipment for rehearsal/audition day. UTPB will be using 6 weighted flag poles with 35 header silks. Current UTPB students may check-out a pole and silk through the band office. A $25.00 deposit will be required
before any equipment is handed to an individual. This deposit will be returned once the audition is over, and the equipment has been returned in good condition. o Equipment will not be available for checking out on the audition day. If you arrive to the audition day without equipment, you will not be allowed to participate. o To check-out equipment, you must pay your $25.00 deposit to Yvonne Drinkard, whose office is located in the Visual and Performing Arts building on main campus. Once you pay the deposit, you will bring your receipt to the Wagner Noel PAC to pick up the flag. What to bring? o water o flag pole and silk o gloves if you are used to them o a great attitude! What are we looking for? o We are looking for grace, poise, attention to detail, athleticism, connection of body and equipment, quick adaptability to style + technique, strong performance, strength, consistency, and a great attitude. The desirable candidate will have all of the above attributes or the right mix along with a strong desire/passion to improve and grow into the skill set necessary to succeed in the Color Guard at UTPB. What we expect of you is simple: Show up on time, work hard, keep quiet during rehearsal, and have fun! At the completion of the audition process, letters will be distributed which will notify each applicant whether they have passed the audition process or not. Those passing the audition process will stay and attend a short meeting where information about the upcoming performance season will be distributed. Those not passing the audition process will be released at this time. Measurements for guard uniforms will also be taken at this meeting. Each new member will be required to pay $ for color guard supplies at the meeting, which includes your performance unitard (UTPB will provide the rest of the uniform), dance shoes, personal equipment bag, and official band t-shirt. Since we will be immediately spending money on uniforms and equipment for you, if you decide to back out of the guard, or if you are not accepted to the university, you will not receive a refund for the supplies and equipment.
COLOR GUARD FAQs Who can be a member of the UTPB Color Guard? The UTPB Color Guard is open to any individual, male or female, that is a full-time or a part-time student at UTPB, and is enrolled in marching band. Previous experience on a color guard is not necessary, however, it is preferred: we are looking for potential, not perfection in the audition. At the time of the audition, the candidate does not have to be fully admitted at that time; however, an application for admissions must be in the process of being reviewed by the admissions department. When will auditions for the Color Guard be held? Auditions for the 2018 UTPB Falcon Color Guard will be held on Saturday, April 21, These auditions will begin at 9:00a.m. in the UTPB Gymnasium Complex: 1st floor main gym. Auditions will conclude by mid-afternoon. This process will take most of the day, so plan your schedule accordingly. Are auditions open to the public? No. The morning rehearsal, as well as the audition, will be closed to the public. Family and friends will not be allowed in the gym at any time. Can Color Guard members receive a scholarship? Yes! All members may be eligible for a scholarship through the marching band as long as they meet the UTPB requirements for receiving financial awards. How many students will be chosen for the Color Guard? We have no set number to choose for the Color Guard, though we will not select more than 32. We are interested in quality rather than quantity. If you don t make the color guard, you may still sign up for marching band playing your instrument. You may also audition for a playing scholarship. Do I need to bring my own equipment to the audition? All candidates are asked to bring their own equipment for rehearsal/audition day. If you are a student at UTPB, you may check-out a pole and silk for a $25.00 deposit that will be returned after the audition when you turn your pole and silk back in.
This equipment must be checked out prior to the audition day. Equipment will NOT be available for use at the audition. To check out equipment, you must pay your $25.00 deposit to Yvonne Drinkard, whose office is located in the Visual and Performing Arts building on main campus. Once you pay the deposit, you will bring your receipt to the Wagner Noel PAC to pick up the flag. Remember, this MUST be taken care of before the audition day. What size flag pole does the Color Guard use? UTPB will be using 6 weighted flag poles with 35 header silks. What do I have to wear for the auditions? All candidates are asked to wear dark appropriate rehearsal attire (all black, if possible) for all rehearsals. In order to dance and spin, you will need to wear clothing that allows you to move. Jeans are not to be worn for rehearsals or the audition; please wear pants/shorts that you can dance in. Appropriate rehearsal attire is required at all times. If you show up to the rehearsal and/or audition in clothing that is deemed inappropriate, you will be asked to leave. You should be in rehearsal attire before practice. Appropriate rehearsal attire includes: o Comfortable workout attire- NO JEANS o Tennis shoes or dance shoes are required o Hair must be pulled back and secure o No jewelry should be worn at rehearsal o Stud earrings are acceptable. Does the audition cost anything? The audition is free to all candidates who are current students at UTPB, have been fully accepted to the university as a student in the Fall of 2018, or has applied for admissions and their application is in the process of being reviewed. If a student is awarded a position with the guard, a $ payment will need to be made so that equipment can be ordered immediately.
What does the Color Guard fee include? The color guard equipment charge is a very necessary part of being a UTPB Color Guard member. This fee includes the following: o Guard performance shoes o Performance unitard (UTPB will provide the rest of the uniform) o Official UTPB Marching Band T-shirt o Travel equipment bag Are there any forms I must have completed in order to audition? There are four forms to bring with you to the audition: a Color Guard Application, a copy of your UTPB acceptance letter, a Release and Indemnification Agreement, and an Authorization for Emergency Medical Treatment form. Current UTPB students should bring a copy of their unofficial transcript and/or a copy of their student ID. If you have not been fully accepted by the time of the audition, you must provide proof that you have officially applied to the university. Printing out an with your official UTPB application number is acceptable. What does the audition consist of? All candidates will experience a morning group class in movement and flag that includes fundamentals along with choreography. After a lunch break, there will be a brief review, and then the audition will proceed in small groups. Auditions will conclude by mid-afternoon. This process will take most of the day so plan your schedule accordingly. Candidates may either bring their lunch or bring money to dine at nearby local food establishments. Is there anything I can practice to enhance my chances of passing the audition? You can stay current on all the equipment fundamentals you have learned. Movement is an important part of all our work. If I am selected for the Color Guard, will I be able to receive credit for band? Yes. All band members receive a one-hour credit. You must register for band to participate in the guard.
When will I find out if I am selected? At the completion of the audition process, letters will be distributed which will notify each applicant whether they have passed the audition process or not. Those passing the audition process will stay and attend a short meeting where information about the upcoming performance season will be distributed. Those not passing the audition process will be released at this time. Measurements for guard uniforms will also be taken at this meeting. Each new member will need to pay $ for color guard supplies at the meeting, which includes your performance unitard, dance shoes, personal equipment bag, and official band t-shirt. Since we will be immediately spending money on uniforms and equipment for you, if you decide to back out of the guard, or if you are not accepted to the university, you will not receive a refund for the equipment. If I am selected, do I have to participate in all performances of the UTPB Marching Falcon Band? YES! As a member of the Color Guard, you are expected to participate in all performances. You will also be expected to follow and adhere to all rules, policies, and procedures in the Marching Band Handbook as well as the course syllabus. If I am selected, do I have to attend Band Camp in August? YES! Attendance at Band Camp is required. At this time, a summer camp schedule is not finalized; however, you should plan to begin around Saturday, August 18, What will the rehearsal schedule be after classes begin? Band rehearsal is MWF at 12:00-1:30, and TTH at 12:00-12:50. There will also be Saturday morning rehearsals on game days only. What must I do to apply? You don t have to be fully admitted to UTPB in order to audition, but your application for admittance must be submitted. You may apply for admittance to UTPB by going to What if I cannot make it to the audition day at UTPB? We strongly encourage your attendance on the day of the audition. If this is absolutely impossible, a video audition is acceptable. Performance videos are not accepted, i.e. halftime shows, marching competitions, winter guard competitions, etc. A choreographed routine, involving both flag work and dance, will be sent via
Dropbox to the candidate. The candidate will have approximately one week from the time the video is sent to prepare, record, and send the video audition to the band staff. You will need to frame the video camera so that both the hands and feet are visible at all times. Wear black, relatively form-fitting clothing so that body moves and position can be adequately evaluated. If you are auditioning for the color guard via the video, please take a minute to introduce yourself, and tell us a little about your training and background as a performer. Video auditions will be considered through Saturday, May 5, 2018.
