1 NEWS FROM THE HOUSE of SCOTLAND Sgeoil nan Taigh : Scots-Gaelic for News From The House Balboa Park, San Diego, California April 2014 Highlights from the April Meeting The meeting was called to order by President Dianne Schultz at 11:36 am. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. April celebrations: Kim Miller s birthday is April 18. Karen Field s is April 22. Dianne Schult s oldest? Thoughts and prayers: A moment s silence was observed for those members of our military who are serving in harm s way and for the people lost on Flight 327. Secretary s Report: read by David McSwain The minutes of the March meeting were and approved. Treasurer s Report: Given by John Field The Profit and Loss Report for March was read. A motion was made and passed accepting the report pending audit. Pipe Band Report: Given by Scott Montgomery Piper Pat Teffs lives in San Ramon and flies down every other Monday to rehearse with the band. He also performed at Tartan Day, and will perform at the June 22 nd concert. The band is selling CD s at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion concert on June 22 nd. If members would like to join them at the table to help sell CDs, it would be appreciated. The band needs more pipers and drummers. If members, or their children or grandchildren have an interest, contact Peggy or Hamish. Note: We must help each other to perpetuate the longevity of the band and our cottage membership. The band is celebrating its 50 th anniversary this year. Peggy is still teaching practice changer to two kids in the hall on Monday evenings at no charge. Hamish visited Olympian High School on April 9 th and did a presentation. Snare drummer Eric Mabrey from the band is Music Director at the school. A few students expressed interest in learning pipes or drums. Membership report: to Gissele, the corresponding secretary, by May 4 th (name, city, zip code). Public chair (?): We need to provide a meal item for the Food Fair ASAP. They are still talking about being open on Saturday and Sunday. Starting April 6 th, they want us to turn in how many hours we are open and how many people visit the house each month. The band is now rehearsing on the third Sunday of each month (only). The band will be playing for a dance event on May 28 put on by a contingent from Edinburgh University. Participation in the Food Fair (May 25 th ) is uncertain at this time. Its campus is located on beachfront property in the beautiful resort town of Carlsbad, in North San Diego County. Full room and board (includes linens) $800.00* Day use with meals $640.00* Deposit $100.00* (Balance to be paid by May 14th, 2013) The College of Piping s California Summer School at the Army Navy Academy of Carlsbad, will be an ideal location in which to improve on your piping and drumming. The dates of the 2014 Summer School are 20th 27th June. Our California Summer School of Piping and Drumming offers intensive instruction by professional instructors in each discipline. The school is open to all ages and to all levels of skill from beginners to competition players. Each student is placed in a class of 6-8 students within their level of experience and skill level. Optional classes are offered in the afternoon, such as pipe band techniques, bagpipe and reed maintenance, and piobaireachd. Most evenings we will have a lecture by one of the instructors followed by a recital by another instructor.

5 Bagpipes: THE bagpipes are Scotland's national instrument, decorated in a rich history. From buskers on the street to parades in the World Pipe Band Championships or Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the unmistakable sound of the bagpipes is unlike any other instrument. Scottish Referendum: WITH less than 150 days until Scottish independence referendum on September 18, new polls show a four per cent difference between Yes and No votes. Bagpipe music has its roots in Scotland's Gaelic culture and usually falls into one of two styles, Ceòl Mór and Ceòl Beag, meaning big music and little music. Ceòl Mór refers to the pibroch, which tends to be slow and complex music that lasts for several minutes. Ceòl Beag, however, lends more towards dance tunes such as reels and jigs. The bagpipes are becoming more and more prominent in popular culture, with several chart-topping music acts such as Scots rockers Biffy Clyro using pipes on hit single Stingin' Belle. Celtic rock ensemble the Red Hot Chilli Pipers are one of several bands to experiment with pipe music, producing fantastic covers and putting a new spin on some of the most popular chart songs. Modern Bag Piper? ISA&feature=player_embedded Scots will vote 'Yes' or 'No' on independence on September 18, 2014 THE Yes and No camps are now almost neck and neck ahead of September's independence referendum, two new polls have revealed. One of the surveys claimed the Yes campaign would only need a swing of just over two per cent to secure a win. An ICM poll for Scotland on Sunday showed support for a Yes vote was at 48 per cent while those voting No was at 52 percent. The survey also highlighted that 19 per cent of Scots voters were still undecided ahead of the referendum. A second poll by Survation put a Yes vote up one point to 38 per cent and a No vote down one point to 46 per cent.

6 When the don t knows are stripped out, the results are in favour of keeping Scotland in the UK. Bookies have slashed the odds of a Yes victory to an all-time low of 9/4. First Minister Salmond said: These are very encouraging polls and show the Yes campaign has the momentum because it is more positive and more trusted than the No campaign. Yes Scotland, meanwhile, will kick off a new billboard poster campaign. And Blair Mcdougall, director of Better Together, said his group will launch an advertising campaign. He added: We will be fighting hard for every single vote between now and polling day. Everybody who wants to keep Scotland in the UK needs to play their part. The No campaign are in a panic because they are seen as negative and unbelievable. Even today, we see yet more evidence that they can t help themselves and just blunder on with the same old failing message. Sending out figures from the political past or dispatching Tory Ministers on day trips from Westminster is not cutting any ice. Salmond s dig came as former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown prepared to make a speech in Glasgow, repeating his warnings that independence could threaten Scots pensions. Brown said: In every speech since the referendum was announced, I have argued that the strongest case for the union and the greatest benefit to Scottish people is that we pool and share risks and resources across the United Kingdom. In Glasgow, I will present detailed findings from new research that shows the multimillion-pound financial dividend pensioners and families gain from our membership of the UK.
