1 South Jersey s Social Club for Singles 50 and Up Check out our website: A Tomasello Valentine March Social St. Patty s Dance Details on page 4 Looking for Card Players If anyone is interested in playing or learning to play Bridge, contact Jean Buck at jab9066@comcast.net or If anyone would like to play the card game, Phase 10, contact Jean Buck at jab9066@comcast.net or Phase 10 is an easy game to learn and fun to play. New format this month. Due to a outpouring of really positive comments, (Actually one person) and due to a complete absence of negative comments, we ve decided to keep the new format that emphasizes our activities, and volunteers succinctly. By Don Nelson Among the operatic treats each year is a Tomasello program dedicated to lovers. While these programs vary considerably from year to year, there is always something noteworthy and greatly appreciated by the audience. Of the four singers this year, only Cody Austin, a tenor, had previously performed at this venue. He commented at his introduction that the last time he was here, he had just had a baby. WOW! We really have a talent to behold! Cody seemed not totally immersed in "La donna e mobile" as he was watching, and sometimes chasing, the pretty women in the audience. We were delighted. Jennifer Holbrook, a soprano, won the affection of many, just by relating that she was a native of Philadelphia. 'Loved her voice, but more on that later. Steven LaBrie, a baritone certainly had vocal power. This writer's favorite piece was a duet with Cody, "Au fond du temple saint" by Bizet. Hey, all these songs were in foreign languages - Italian, German, French, Spanish. A writer with limited Spanish didn't get a break. Neither did he recognize a tune that had been rewritten with an English version. Baaad! Only from the expression of the performers do we know that these ballads were love songs. A second soprano, Maria Aleida, a native of Argentina, showed great talent that got the first standing ovation. She continued to be a favorite, peaking with some coloratura. For those who may not be familiar with that term, coloratura is a playground of high notes, trills and follies that a few blessed sopranos can achieve. To our continued delight, Jennifer also performed some coloratura. Such a treat! We rarely hear this vocal expression. Meanwhile Michele Scanlon flawlessly accompanies on the piano and somehow leads with her back to the performers. We think the only saving grace is tradition, which states, "The Tenor is always to blame". That leads our thoughts to May's concert, "Totally Tenors", where four of these Devils will perform. Won't you join us and have your sins totally absolved?
