1 South Jersey s Social Club for Singles 50 and Up Check out our website: Your Social Teams Fall: Mary Basso, Georgian Crusenberry,, Maryjane Evans, Joan Knisell, Harriet Shikes, Barbara Snow, Linda Switzer Winter: Mary Basso, Teresa Gizzi, Mary Neale, Harriet Shikes, Linda Switzer Spring: Joyce Kent, Joan Knisell, Grace McAteer, Harriet Shikes, Carol Wasniewski Summer: Maryjane Evans, Joan Knisell, Loretta Krewson, Harriet Shikes, Barbara Snow Operations: Esther Boyko, Shirlee Cox, Georgian Crusenberry, Tom Cusack, Den DiMarco, Pete Gentili, Janet Kelleher, Linda Kercher, Loretta Krewson, Don Nelson, Michele Wosak Photographer: Barbara Snow Editor: Michele Wosak PICNIC ATTRACTS FRIENDS AND FRIENDLY FOES By Linda Switzer and Den DiMarco 2018 Twas the day before Labor Day. The welcome team had completed their decorative and welcoming work. The foodies had mostly finished their feasting of mouthwatering and nourishing ribs, chicken, green beans, corn on the cob, a scrumptious salad, water, tea and lemonade. The card sharks intently studied their hands and their opponent s faces as they strategized their next moves. Lively conversations flourished. And then the physical battles began. Washer War Diane D., Barb S., Joan K., Eileen V. opened the games with a vigorous competition of the washer toss. The objective was to lob the washer into a smallish wooden box for one point or an even smaller coffee can for three points. Diane and Eileen walked away with the virtual trophy in the animated competition, with gasps of delight and disappointment punctuating the event, both by contestants and captivated spectators. Diane wowed the crowd with uncanny aim (See what I did there?) causing three of her tosses to land in the impossibly small coffee canister. Well done, Diane! Croquet Conquest The Red Bank Battlefield located along the Delaware River in National Park was the location of the Battle of Red Bank in the American Revolutionary War on 10/22/1777. Using unique strategy, the battle began. Fast forward 241 years to 2018 and history was alive once more in Red Bank, NJ. Commander-in-Chief Den DiMarco used his keen intellect and thorough understanding of the rules of croquet (gathered minutes earlier) to lead a troop of Fantastic 50s through the rigors of competition. Unlike the redcoats of old, the teams were comprised of red, blue, black, yellow, green and orange teams. As the participants engaged in strategic maneuvers, the crowd gathered on the sidelines, cheering them on - sometimes even breaking out into "the wave". It was tense at times. Sometimes hope seemed lost. But then all of a sudden there was a breakout and the battle became a three-way brawl. It was neck and neck between the yellow team (Sonny S.), the green team, (Jack D.), and the blue team, (Barbara S.) I would be remiss if I didn't give honorable mention to the black team (Pat G.), the red team (Linda C.) and last, but not least - and sometimes missing in action - the orange team (Loretta K.) With a blaze of glory Sonny S. surged ahead and was declared the winner closely followed by Jack D. and Barbara S. It was an honor to behold this fierce, and sometimes comical battle, and see that history is alive and valiantly fought on the battlefield once more. Our thanks to the team that put together this wonderful outing! Newsletter Deadline: 10/20 Saturday, 10/20, is the deadline for event info/articles to appear in the next newsletter. Call Michele Wosak at or at mwosak@comcast.net Many thanks to our gracious and selfless hosts without whom there would be no Fantastic 50s! September Events 2-3 October & Beyond 3-4 Calendar 5 Joining/Renewal Info 6 Diane D. and Joan K. playing Washer War! More photos on pages 3 and 4.

Our Club A Quick View When we started this club in October of 2000, our goal was to provide interesting social activities for people over 50 years of age. Since that time we ve sponsored thousands of activities from free concerts in local parks to trips to Hong Kong. While not intended to be a partnership meeting place, many of us have found lasting friendships. We ve noticed that the more involved you are, the more satisfying the friendships become. As you might expect, we ve seen our share of marriages as well. Some other events include dance parties at local clubs, pinochle games, Kimmel Center concerts, dinners, trips and special interest groups like photography and birding. We have no limit as to what adventure might be sponsored. Belonging is lots of fun. Lonely nights tend to disappear. We provide descriptions of events and current information by way of a monthly newsletter, a web site and a weekly . We special changes as needed. The basis of our club is members hosting events for other members. That is what keeps the club vibrant and moving forward. So think of something you would like to do or attend, and host it as a club event. We need your participation. Page 8
