5 2003 UTES HAVE TALENT, YOUTH According to Head Coach Greg Marsden, the 2003 Utes should look a lot like last year s model. That s good news for Ute fans, who watched their team race to a fourth-place finish at the hotly contested 2002 NCAA Championships. Marsden s analysis might seem unusual, however, given the fact that Utah lost a third of those NCAA routines to graduation. The engine running that team the senior class of Shannon Bowles, Deidra Graham and Lindsay Tanner combined for 15 All-America citations in their Ute careers. Even so, Marsden maintains his latest version will keep right on motoring toward the NCAA Super Six and championship contention. The freshmen we recruited for this year are very similar to the group we have had in place for the last several years, says Marsden. We have recruited power again, which has been our trend in recent years. The athletes we have in place exude such an overriding feel of discipline, hard work and determination that I think it tends to attract people of a similar nature. I know that was certainly true of (current sophomore) Annabeth Eberle when she was being recruited and I think it s also true of the freshman class this year. Marsden also points to Utah s famed crowd base and historical success when discussing the type of athletes drawn to his program. Athletes who come here know they ll be competing before 10,000 fans and are aware of the tradition of our program. Some people would be intimidated by those things, but I think our recruits choose Utah in part because they want to perform before a big crowd and they want to be at the NCAA Championships with a chance to win. So, while the seven-time national coach of the year acknowledges the gaping holes left by graduation, he thinks they can be filled, and not just by freshmen. Returning after a year idled by injury is senior Kylee Wagner, an All- American who injured her ankle in the first meet of Getting Kylee back should really help us, says Marsden of Wagner s medical hardship extension. She competed on three events for us before 16 Three-time NCAA champion and 12-time All-American Theresa Kulikowski is a senior this year. her injury, and after off-season shoulder surgery, will be a potential all-arounder for us this year. As for his incoming freshmen, he says, We have an extremely talented freshman class. However, any time you re depending on freshmen, you re faced with a bit of an unknown since you don t know how quickly they ll adjust to all the aspects of college life and college gymnastics. They ll have to adjust awfully fast to keep Utah s national record home court win streak intact. The Utes, who have not lost a home dual meet since 1979 (170 straight meets) will open their 2003 campaign against powerful UCLA, the NCAA champion in 2000 and Marsden defends his choice of season-opening opponents by saying, Starting off with UCLA is a great motivator. You don t have to do a lot of talking about the importance of being ready for the season. Also, it s always fun to compete against teams like UCLA. It will give us an idea early in the season of where we are and where we need to be. He ll have plenty of opportunity to check out the top competition thanks to a schedule that includes seven teams from the 2002 NCAA Championships (UCLA, Minnesota, Arizona, Oregon State, Michigan, Louisiana State and Florida). The Utes will bring yet more national caliber competition into the Huntsman Center on April 12, when they play host to the NCAA Region Championships. This is a great schedule for our fans and our athletes, asserts Marsden, who acknowledges, It s probably not a great schedule to pad my win-loss record. Along with the touted freshmen, a cast of All-America returners will help keep his record glossy (Marsden is college gymnastics only 700-win coach). Key among those is three-time NCAA champion and 12- time All-American Theresa Kulikowski. Kulikowski won the NCAA allaround and balance beam titles as a freshman in 1999, and after missing the 2001 season with a knee injury, defended her NCAA beam title as a sophomore in Last year, she returned to the allaround, winning first-team All-America honors by finishing third. Her credentials are unmatched on the college scene: Kulio has finished as high as second in the nation on three events (vault, beam and floor) and has a third-place national finish on bars. She has placed first and third in her two all-around attempts at nationals. Keeping Kulikowski company on the NCAA awards stand is junior Melissa Vituj, already a six-time All-American after just two seasons. Other returning
6 2003 UTES HAVE TALENT, YOUTH Kylee Wagner is back for her senior year after a season-ending injury in 02. All-Americans for Utah are seniors Wagner and Kim Allan and junior Veronique Leclerc. Just as critical to Utah s success is Eberle, who exploded into the national limelight at the end of her rookie campaign last year. The gifted athlete barely missed out on All-America status as a freshman and should contend for individual event championships during the remainder of her career. Utah s other returner is sophomore Gritt Hofmann, although she only competed one time last year due to back and shoulder problems. Utah s freshman class has some exciting potential, as well. Crystal Gilmore is the most internationally accomplished, having competed for the 2000 Canadian Olympic team. She helped Canada to a best-ever ninth-place finish at the 2000 Olympics. Another international athlete with big skills who signed with the Utes is South African National Team member Dominique D Oliveira. Two recruits from the states also figure to play a key role as freshmen: Kristen Riffanacht of Chesire, Conn., is an international elite, while Natalie Nicoloff of Hermitage, Pa., was the 2002 Level 10 region balance beam champion. Here s a closer look at the 2003 Utes: Senior Kim Allan appears poised to return to her freshman form when she made All-American on the balance beam and played a big role in Utah s NCAA runner-up finish. Allan, a tenacious, exuberant performer, seemed tentative last year after a nearly year-long layoff from Achilles surgery. Kim struggled with her confidence last year after missing most of her sophomore season, says Marsden. Now that she s more confident she won t re-injure the Achilles, I think we ll see the Kim Allan who competed with confidence and consistency prior to her injury. Kim is a very aggressive, powerful athlete who does everything to the ultimate degree. She has the potential to be a contender on all four events. Senior team captain Theresa Kulikowski has proved she is one of the best, if not the best gymnast in the collegiate ranks. Awarded a fifth year of eligibility after knee surgery cost her most of the 2000 season, Kulikowski already has an NCAA all-around and two balance beam championships to her credit. She has placed second in the nation on both floor and vault and third on bars. The 12- time All-American and 2002 Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-America Team Member of the Year is a 4.0 student who has already graduated with a degree in exercise and sport science. So what s left for her to accomplish? To Kulio, you just say enjoy it, says Marsden. She has accomplished everything she needs to. From my perspective, the most important thing for Theresa is to enjoy her senior year and not put too much pressure on herself. If she can do that, she will have a very successful and rewarding senior year. Kylee Wagner is back for a second crack at her senior year after injuring her ankle in the first meet of A balance beam All-American in 2001 and an experienced three-event performer, a healthy Wagner could challenge for an all-around position. Kylee s ankle is finally strong again and some off-season shoulder surgery is allowing her to train on all four events, which she has been unable to do for the last two years, says Marsden. If she can remain healthy and can make up some ground lost to injuries, Kylee has the potential to contribute on all four events. We are very much looking forward to having someone with her experience back in our lineup. Junior Veronique Leclerc, a twotime uneven bar All-American, is on the verge of earning similar accolades on all four events. Best known for her power and consistency on bars and vault, Leclerc is also skilled on floor and beam. She is perfectly positioned to earn a fulltime all-around berth this year after Junior Melissa Vituj, a six-time All-American, is vying for a full-time all-around position. 17
7 2003 UTES HAVE TALENT, YOUTH NEW IN 2003 This season, college women s gymnastics has adopted the vaulting table that has been used in international gymnastics for the past two years. It is a totally different shape than the old horse and extends length-wise vs. widthwise across the end of the runway. It is four feet high, four feet long and three feet wide. VAULT Like every collegiate team, Utah must adjust to the new vaulting table this year. Vault All- Americans Melissa Vituj and Theresa Kulikowski return and vault is also the best event for sophomore Annabeth Eberle and junior Veronique Leclerc. Says Marsden, We lost two vaulters off our NCAA team, but we have Kylee Wagner back from an injury and she s a very good vaulter. Freshmen Kristen Riffanacht and Dominique D Olivera are extremely strong, powerful vaulters and Natalie Nicoloff can do a 10.0-valued vault. With our personnel, we should have our entire lineup competing 10.0 vaults this year. BARS Marsden is cautiously optimistic he can replace two exceptional All-America bar workers from last year s lineup (Shannon Bowles and Deidra Graham). Theresa Kulikowski, Annabeth Eberle and Veronique Leclerc can compete with anybody in the country on bars and returners Melissa Vituj and Kim Allan improve every year. We brought in three really strong bar workers in freshmen Kristen Riffanacht, Dominique D Oliveira and Crystal Gilmore. Former U.S. National Team member Annabeth Eberle is primed for a great sophomore season. She came on strong at the end of her freshman year and was the NCAA region vault champion. going part-time as a sophomore. Veronique had a great sophomore year and really began to emerge as one of our strongest performers, says Marsden. All Veronique lacked before was consistency and she took a big step forward in that area last year. I expect her to become an increasingly important piece of the puzzle in our team s success. A relative unknown when she came to college, junior Melissa Vituj is now an annual fixture in the NCAA Championships individual event finals. A sixtime All-American in her first two years, she won first-team All-America honors on floor and beam and made the second team on vault. Even so, her biggest accomplishment might be conquering the uneven bars to give herself a shot at all-around fame. When we recruited Mel, we thought we were getting a role player, but instead we got a star, gloats Marsden. Mel is one of the most pleasant surprises I ve had in 27 years of coaching. Her positive, upbeat personality and incredible determination is one reason I think her improvement will continue and she will become one of our strongest all-around performers. One of the strongest, most athletic gymnasts in the nation, sophomore Annabeth Eberle is on the brink of a sensational career. Eberle, the 2002 NCAA Region vault champion as a freshman, hit every routine as an allarounder for Utah in regionals and nationals. Still, the long-time U.S. National team member has barely brushed her considerable potential. Annabeth had wrist surgery a week prior to coming to school last year and was unable to prepare properly during the preseason, says Marsden. As a result, she was inconsistent early on, but she resolved that issue as the season progressed and peaked in the postseason. Now that she is healthy and we are able to prepare her properly, look out! She uniquely combines power gymnastics with execution and an artistic quality. Without question, Annabeth is a big part of the future of Utah gymnastics. The least known quantity outside the freshman class is sophomore Gritt Hofmann, a member of the German National team who did not arrive on campus until second semester of last year. Banged up from a long international season that culminated in the 2001 World Championships in November, Hofmann never got healthy enough to compete for a starting spot in Utah s lineup. Gritt is still a bit of an unknown since she arrived last January with back 18
8 2003 UTES HAVE TALENT, YOUTH Senior All-American Kim Allan is a powerful force on every event. and shoulder problems, explains Marsden. We know she is a talented athlete on all four events. If her body holds up, she could be the wild card that puts us over the hump. Ute fans might see a resemblance to former Utah All-American Angie Leonard in freshman Dominique D Oliveira. Like Leonard, D Oliveira comes to Utah with a wealth of unrefined talent. A member of the South African National Team, D Oliveira will simultaneously train for Utah and a berth on her country s 2004 Olympic team. I m very excited about Dominique s potential to contribute this year. She s very powerful and has a good competitive background, yet she readily admits she has a lot to learn, says Marsden. She already has big skills, so the key will be her ability to improve her execution. Dominique will contend for a place in the all-around if she improves as much as I think she will. The addition of 2000 Canadian Olympian Crystal Gilmore will go a long ways toward replacing the holes left by last year s graduated seniors. Gilmore committed to Utah two years ago but held off starting school for a year while she continued to train and compete for Canada s National team. She should have an immediate impact at the collegiate level. Crystal has all of the qualities you want in a gymnast, says Marsden. She has difficult skills, good execution, international experience and a unique style. Her floor routine has some of the most interesting choreography that will be performed on the college scene this year. She is an excellent balance beam worker and also excels on bars. If she has a weakness, it s vaulting, but she is determined to improve and contribute on that event as well. Freshman Natalie Nicoloff s relative lack of big time credentials didn t scare off Utah s coaches, who were immediately drawn to Natalie as a result of the way she performs her skills, says Marsden. He says the two-year Level 10 national qualifier, has a beautiful line and great execution. She is still a bit of a work in progress when it comes to skills, but she is a quick learner. Natalie could be one of the pleasant surprises in college gymnastics this season. The Utes hope they find as much success with international elite gymnast Kristen Riffanacht of Connecticut as they did with their most recent East Coast recruit: New Hampshire native Shannon Bowles graduated as a nine-time NCAA All- American last May. Geography aside, Marsden equates Riffanacht to a sophomore on his current team. Kristen is power personified. If I had to compare her to someone on the team, it would be Annabeth Eberle no question. Kristen is strong and powerful, yet can perform with elegance. She doesn t have a weak event and should make an immediate impact everywhere. BEAM Bowles and Graham took a giant chunk out of this lineup. Both were All-Americans and Bowles was one of the best in the nation throughout her career. It is going to be tough to put together the kind of lineup we had with those two in it, admits Marsden. Beam will go a long ways toward determining what kind of season we re going to have. Returning are two-time NCAA champion Theresa Kulikowski, two-time All-American Melissa Vituj and All- Americans Kim Allan (2000) and Kylee Wagner (2001). Veronique Leclerc and Annabeth Eberle are both very good beam workers and this is a great event for Crystal Gilmore and Natalie Nicoloff. FLOOR Half of Utah s routines from last year s NCAA Championships are gone, but Marsden is still excited about this event. We ll probably have the greatest variation of music and style that we ve ever had. We have some very interesting choreography and every kind of music you can imagine. In addition, he has floor All-Americans Theresa Kulikowski and Melissa Vituj and NCAA veterans Veronique Leclerc, Annabeth Eberle, Kim Allan and Kylee Wagner coming back. Freshmen he likes on floor are Crystal Gilmore, Kristen Riffanacht and Dominique D Oliveira. Junior Veronique Leclerc made the All-America team on bars in 2001and
