1 2016 CHILDREN S NUTCRACKER INFORMATION PACKET Please take time to read this so you are well informed GOING OUT OF TOWN? STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO ATTEND ALL REHEARSALS (rehearsals are either Friday or Saturday depending on the assigned role) WE HAVE A LIMITED AMOUNT OF TIME TO PUT TOGETHER OUR PRODUCTION AND ALL CAST MEMBERS MUST BE PRESENT FOR REHEARSALS. We take great pride in casting our talented children in The Nutcracker. Things change from year to year including choreography, costumes and number of students attending the audition. As one of the leading non-profit Arts organizations in Florida, we work hard to put together the best possible dance production. Casting is one aspect of an entire production. There are also costumes to be sewn, props and sets to be fixed, backstage crews to be organized, tickets to be sold, programs to produce, and many hours of rehearsals for everyone involved. It is normal to compare what roles a child has done in the past and what they would like to do in the future. It is wonderful that our children have goals and want to continue to improve and feel challenged. Please keep in mind that dancers repeat roles. We place children in the roles that will fit best within our production, not with their friends. The whole process will be exciting and sometimes emotional for a child. We believe the entire audition process is a wonderful learning experience for a young dancer. As directors we must focus on the entire performance. Before our audition begins, we speak with all of the children. We let them know that they are a very important part of our production, and that their commitment is important to us and the entire cast. We are proud of our children at NFB. We appreciate that you have given your child this incredible opportunity to be inspired by and to perform with professional dancers and their peers. The NFB Artistic Staff We will need parent volunteers before, during and after this production. Please let us know where you can help. Photos in costume will be available with Jennifer Boles Photography.

3 Instructions on Makeup, Costume, and Backstage Etiquette for THE NUTCRACKER MAKEUP: BEN NYE PERSONAL MAKEUP KITS are available online. All you need will be included in this kit. It will last you for years. Purchase your own on-line through These kits are not required, but highly recommended! IF YOU DO NOT ORDER A BEN NYE MAKEUP KIT If you do not order a kit we recommend a good pancake base makeup with water and a sponge. Lipstick should always be red. No dark reds or browns. Use a slightly darker lip pencil over lipstick. Blush can be applied heavier than you may think for the stage. Use a good pinkish color. Don t use blushes with dark tones. For eye shadow, do not use blue or green on stage. It is better to use a little of your blush or a light brown color over the eyelids. A little eyebrow pencil is fine. Stick to the same color as hair. Facial features should be defined, but not too exaggerated. Use mascara, but no exaggerated eyeliner is needed for children s parts. Do not wear any personal jewelry on stage. In fact, it is best to leave it all at home so it won t be lost or stolen. LABEL ALL OF YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS IN CASE YOU LEAVE SOMETHING. Always bring a supply of extra hair nets, hair pins, hair spray, safety pins and a needle and thread. Always make sure the hair is slicked back and pinned in very securely. To achieve this, you can wet the hair slightly and then apply gel or hairspray. Always use a hair net. It can be wrapped around a bun a few times. COSTUMES: Some undergarments may change depending on costumes. Please check with wardrobe to be sure of what your child needs. Party Scene Children and Teenagers (Act 1) Little Girls: Hair in bun with hair fall of curls, use falls of curls in own hair color. Cover curls with a hair net. Camisole leotard, pink tights, and black ballet slippers with pink elastics. Teenagers will wear pink ballet slippers with ribbons or pointe shoes. Little Boys: Hair in bun, Camisole leotard, black jazz shoes and white tights. Baby Mice (Act 1) Hair in bun, black whiskers and nose will be added by helpers. Leotard, pink tights, and pink ballet slippers under costume. Bakers (Act 2) Nude camisole leotard pink tights, pink ballet slippers with no ribbons, hair in low bun. Angels (Act 2) Hair in a bun, pink tights, pink ballet slippers with no ribbons. (leotard is part of their costume)
4 Arabian Girls (Act 2) Hair in a bun, barefoot, undergarments: nude trunks and bra (if needed). Dutch Children (Act 2) Little Girls: Nude leotard, pink tights. Shoes provided. Little Boys: Nude leotard, pink tights and black jazz shoes. Ginger Cookies (Act 2) Hair in 2 braids clipped low on head, nude leotard, pink tights and ballet slippers. No ribbons. BACKSTAGE ETIQUETTE Please read these simple guidelines and let your child know about the importance of following these rules for his or her own personal safety. FOR DRESS REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCES Please bring your student to the backstage area and SIGN-IN to your designated dressing room. To avoid dressing room congestion, please bring your child to the theater with make-up and hair ready for performance. It is important that our systems backstage run smoothly. Too many people backstage adds confusion and lack of space for our performers. NO PARENTS ARE ALLOWED IN THE WINGS DURING PERFORMANCES OR DRESS REHEARSAL. If you are volunteering backstage, we ask that you do not enter the back stage area to watch the performance. Pick up a badge from the volunteer coordinator. Children finished performing after the 1st Act will be allowed to leave the backstage area and can attend the 2nd act of the show with parents or guardians, but due to ticket sales we cannot guarantee a seat will be available with your group unless you purchase a ticket for the child in advance. Make-up should be removed and children must wear street clothes in the audience. Please use theater exits and entrances. Please remember common courtesy in the dressing rooms. No running in the halls or anywhere in the backstage area. When you are backstage, please be aware of others around you, just like in dance class. Remember this stage rule: IF YOU CAN SEE THE AUDIENCE, THEY CAN SEE YOU! Never touch or look out through the center of the main curtain, and never stand or sit in the wings (sides of the stage) to watch the performance. This can be dangerous to you and the dancers who are making entrances and exits on the stage. Costumes are property of The Northwest Florida Ballet. DO NOT EAT, DRINK OR CHEW GUM IN YOUR COSTUME. Every year students BREAK this rule. You must Eat or Drink before or after you put on your costume. Take responsibility to hang up your costume, and keep all the parts of the costume together. If you do not, you may not have a complete costume to wear on stage. DO NOT PICK UP, MOVE OR TOUCH ANY PROPS (items used on stage) OR SCENERY. Heads Up means look up. It can be dangerous on stage. Listen to all stagehands and the stage manager. Please remember this simple stage etiquette for personal safety and organization. Performing can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it is also a time for students to learn about the rules of the theater. Thank you for working hard to make these performances possible.
