Dick Allen Wins PBA Xtra Frame Chesapeake Open for Fourth PBA Tour Title CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Aug. 13, 2017) - Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., defeated top qualifier Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., , to win his fourth Professional Bowlers Association Tour title Sunday in the PBA Xtra Frame Chesapeake Open at AMF Western Branch Lanes. Allen, who won his most recent PBA Tour title in Indianapolis in 2011, was in or near the lead throughout the final stages of qualifying before surrendering the lead to Ciminelli in the final qualifying game. But making the finals as the no. 2 qualifier was fine with Allen, who knew he would at least get a shot at ending his six-year title drought. I ve been close a couple of times, Allen said, but after coming so close (a third-place finish in the Mark Roth- Marshall Holman PBA Doubles Championship) with Zeke (Bayt) made me want to really focus on my game, so I ve been working at it. It was Mark s 9th SASBA title. Derek and Ronnie finished second. Steve Wright/Jay Burgess won 10 of their 12 matches to move into third. Mike Austin/David Smith were fourth and Mark Williams and Hank Jordan rounded out the top five. John Chovanec had the only 300 game. Butch beat Mike. The Busschers wanted to thank the members of SASBA who supported their ticket sales and money drive for the Luci Bonneau tournament. Thanks to Bill Cathey, Lauren and the staff of Ennis All Star Bowl for being gracious hosts. Ennis added $2,250 to the prize fund. August we are at Cowtown for a Non-Champion Singles tournament. Labor Day weekend is the 70/60 Doubles tournament at University Lanes in Denton and it is limited to 40 teams. Dick Allen These young kids out here now are so good, you really have to work at it if you want to win again. And I love to bowl, and I wanted to win again. Low, 20, capped off his youth career with a second U20 boys title after defeating David Hooper of Greenville, South Carolina, , at Game of Wickliffe. Leiendecker, a 16-year-old right-hander who made her debut in the U20 division this year, averaged 230 in her two-game total-pinfall match against Caitlyn Johnson of Lumberton, Texas, to claim the U20 girls title, The championship round in each division aired nationally on CBS Sports Network last Tuesday. Nearly 100 student-athletes and more than two dozen collegiate coaches traveled to the ITRC this week to take advantage of the state-of-the-art facility, where student-athletes were tested through a variety of on- and off-lane drills. The drills help to assess a student-athletes strengths and weaknesses and provides them with an objective analysis of their abilities, including a Performance Evaluation Test (P.E.T.) score. The P.E.T. score can be used to compare not only those at this year s Bowling Combine, but to compare student-athletes from previous years. The evaluation includes sport-specific skills, such as finding their release tilt and revolutions per minute, tracking spare proficiency and the ability to manage breakpoints, and repeating shots. Players also are put through activities such as the vertical jump and an endurance test to determine their overall athleticism. Box 6003, Frisco, TX Cell: Website: genie@thebowlingnews.net Live streaming is television on the internet. Well, it is, sort of, minus the massive amounts of production equipment, a dozen or so talented people running the equipment, and commercials. But in a way, live streaming is also television on a budget. Having seen a few national TV productions and more than a few live streams up close and personal, there are obvious differences. First is one that many don t see. There s the huge production truck with a satellite dish, often behind the center, with a bigger dish than the one found in a handful of 1980 s backyards (in the infancy of home satellite television), beaming a signal skyward, then sending it back to ESPN or CBS Sports Net. Then there s the ones you do see. A raised platform with two large cameras is behind the TV pair, with another large camera down lane two lanes to the right. ESPN has the announcers booth down lane off to the right, CBS Sports Net s booth is also off to the right, but behind the TV pair. All camera positions and both announcer booths have plenty of wires on the floor heading to the production truck. Over the approach and lanes are a myriad of lights on a grid in various sizes aimed at various angles, making the bowlers stand out on camera while minimizing shadows. With live streaming, everything is on a smaller scale with all same elements with cameras, wires, and lights. Cameras used on most live streams are stationary, except when a championship round is in progress, using just one pair of lanes. One of the first things asked by the live streamer crew ahead of time is a center s outgoing bandwidth. Those centers with little or lower internet use often have a narrow bandwidth, while other facilities, like the National Bowling Stadium, for example, have a very wide bandwidth, guaranteeing great picture clarity and strength. If low bandwidth is an issue, some centers upgrade and have more added just for the tournament. If you saw the PBA XtraFrame announce booth we used at Copperfield Bowl for The Luci two weeks ago, or anywhere else recently, it should not have looked too daunting. FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM the cameras see, a bigger-thanaverage audio slide-fader mixer, tables on either side of the main console table mounted with two camera tripods each, a separate microphone to pick up crowd noise, and several pairs of headsets. Then there are the cameras. Two will show the showcase pairs, the other two to show the overhead score monitors. Those images are laid on top of the bowler images to make them look as they would if you were inside the center. The main laptop shows each camera image and serves as the control center. From here, a template with screen graphics and inserted text, like telling us Game 4 of 7, can be left in, changed, or removed as the situation calls. Then there are score updates, which we kept hearing from viewers weren t fast enough. For standard PBA events, viewers are directed to pba.com for up-to-the-minute numbers. For The Luci, the SABC volunteer crew manually records scores, gets them to the main scorekeeper, enters them, then prints out a standing sheet, which we received the first copy. Here s where television starts to differ from live streams. The first difference is graphics. Every so often on television, a graphic covers the entire screen, showing a point of note. The four main streamers, PBAXF, USBC s bowl.tv, BowlStream.tv, and Inside Bowling have on-screen graphics show what game in a block is being shown, but rarely is there one using the entire screen without a live picture underneath. As you may have already guessed, preparing those doesn t happen as quickly as tossing a bag of popcorn in a microwave. Not only is there a question of how it should look, but what to put into the graphic itself. It has to have significance, because it will be on screen for no more than ten seconds. Many smaller graphics can be prepared to lay over the live picture, such as running score, player s name, player s standing in a match as in -7, or +27, upcoming matches, finish of match play bowlers not advancing to TV finals, and the like. Not only do those have to be prepared, the television director/producer has to have those available at a moment s notice when the time is right for its use. What live streaming resembles to me are the radio sports broadcasts I did in in the early 80 s, but these have pictures. I m not saying that in a bad way, but from set up, to the broadcast itself, to tear down, they are similar. Here s why. In the age before cell phones, we had an old rotary phone on a piece of plywood. It had a special adapter that was hooked up to a small audio mixer/amplifier with several microphone and headset inputs. Several weeks ahead of time, the radio station called to have a special phone line either installed or turned on outside the field, gym, or arena. We called the control room on the phone, allowing the signal to be fed into the main control board and the game to be broadcast. Sounds simple, huh? That changed once cell phones became more common twenty years ago. The main difference now in the equipment set up was connecting to the XF server. Other than that, it was a very familiar routine. In case you continue to wonder why there is more and more live streaming, you d better get on board and fast. Last week, Disney announced they are pulling their material off NetFlix and starting two live streaming/on-demand viewing services for Disney Studiosproduced sports programming, At JB s Allen Bowl Wolbert banks 298/812, Franklin claims 713 Warren 300, Brule 299 John Wolbert was high for the week at JB s Allen Bowl with an award-winning = 812 Tuesday Mixed Doubles session. And that fits in with what we ve been talking about in this column the last eighteen months or so. The total number of television viewers is dropping and the average viewer age getting older. In the championship match, Ciminelli never got comfortable. He failed to convert the in the second frame, and didn t throw his first strike until the sixth frame. He got his second strike in the seventh frame, but then left a 7 pin his fifth single pin leave. In the meantime, Allen s early double was followed by a split. And then a turkey was followed by a split, giving Ciminelli a fighting chance. But the Cheektowaga left-hander left a 4-10 split in the ninth frame and his comeback hopes evaporated. Anyone who has turned on BowlTV or Xtra Frame in recent months already knows how busy the group has been, competing weekly in Professional Bowlers Association 50 Tour or Professional Women s Bowling Association Tour events. The men s contingent includes United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famers Parker Bohn III of Jackson, New Jersey, and Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wisconsin, along with fellow PBA50 Tour standouts Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pennsylvania, and Ron Mohr of North Las Vegas, Nevada. The women s team consists of a quartet of USBC Hall of Famers - Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard of Keller, Texas, Leanne Hulsenberg of Pleasant View, Utah, and Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Individually, they are sharp and confident after a summer of reps and success on the lanes, and it now is time to come together for collective success at the 2017 World Bowling Senior Championships near Munich, which gets underway Tuesday. The event, last held in Las Vegas in 2015, will take place through Aug. 20 at Dream Bowl Palace in the Munich-area suburb of Unterfohring. The 2017 World Senior Championships will feature competitors from more than 40 countries and include medal opportunities in team, doubles, singles, all-events and Masters competition. The United States swept the men s and women s team gold medals at the 2015 tournament and momentum will be a prevalent theme when the team members arrive in Germany. Bohn s summer has included watching his son, Brandon, pick up a win in the 12-andunder division at the 2017 Junior Gold Championships presented by the Brands of Ebonite International, while simultaneously helping his wife, Leslie, coach their USA Bowling team to a TV appearance in the 15-and-under division of the USA Bowling National Championships presented by Sixlets, airing on CBS Sports Network on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. Eastern. Bohn may not have been throwing the ball for those events, but it helped motivate him when it was his turn to take the lanes. He then turned in a dominating performance to a win the PBA50 Dave Small s Championship Lanes Classic presented by Roto Grip, his first PBA50 Tour title of the season and fourth of his career. (Aug. 8, 2017) PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber won the PBA50 DeHayes Insurance Group Championship presented by Pro Bowl West and Ebonite for his 100th overall title in PBA competition Tuesday, and Brian LeClair of Delmar, N.Y., survived challenges from Norm Duke and Parker Bohn III to win his first PBA50 Player of the Year crown. Weber, who was the top seed for the finals, won his first PBA50 Tour title of the season by defeating Duke in the title match, , for his 11th career title on the tour for players 50 years and older. I thought it could come at any time but I might have taken it for granted a little bit, said Weber of his 100th overall win. You have to earn it you can t expect it. It s been a humbling experience this year, Weber admitted of his otherwise disappointing season in which his previous best finish was third in the USBC Senior Masters. You re going to have the down times no matter who you are. You have to take the good with the bad. Weber, the 2015 and 2016 PBA50 Player of the Year, has won 37 PBA Tour titles, 48 PBA regional and four PBA50 regional titles in addition to his 11 on the PBA50 Tour. His 100 titles ranks second behind fellow hall of famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. who has 102 titles overall in PBA competition. Both Weber and Duke got off to strong starts in the championship match. Duke, who was also on a string of strikes, left a pocket 7-10 split in the eighth frame which pretty much ended his hopes for the win. I knew going in it was going to take a 260 game against Norm and fortunately I bowled 270, Weber said. I needed every bit of it because every time I bowl Norm, we always have a great match and it seems like it s always a battle. Weber s title also moved him into a tie for fifth with Williams and Gene Stus on the all-time PBA50 Tour titles list. Duke, who qualified third for the finals, needed a win to overtake LeClair in the player of the year point race. LeClair, who finished seventh in the tournament, was the only player to win more than one title during the season winning the Pasco County Florida Open and Johnny Petraglia BVL Opens. He also had a secondplace finish in the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open. In the opening match Bohn, trying for his second consecutive title of the season after winning last week s Dave Small s Championship Lanes Classic, defeated Williams, the 2017 USBC Senior Masters winner, In the second match, Duke defeated Bohn to advance to the semi-final match where he beat hall of famer Amleto Monacelli, Both Duke and Monacelli were also trying for their second titles of the season. The 17-year-old wanted to see how much she improved from her first trip to the ITRC as she gets closer to making a decision on where she ll further her education next fall. The technology available here is amazing, especially with all of the feedback I received last year, Brown said. I ve been working on those all year, and I m excited to see how much I have improved over the course of the year. We don t have anything like this available at home, so being able to come back again will really help me looking ahead. After the evaluation on the lanes and in the classroom is complete, the student-athletes and coaches have the opportunity to sit down to discuss how the coach s program and curriculum might fit into the student-athletes future. I really like being able to have the one-on-one with the coaches to learn about their personalities, since that s a really big thing to me, Brown said. I also like having the chance to see what they have to offer. My education is the top priority, so it s important to see that a program has my education in mind, and not just the athletics side. This portion of the Bowling Combine also allows each parent in attendance the chance to move from the sidelines into the middle of the excitement and join in the discussion. Brown s mother, Cathy Johnson, took the advice from her YOUTH TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE daughter s coach in Pennsylvania to look into the Bowling Combine last year, and she feels the experience already is benefiting Brown s future. Last year, I really was amazed to watch all of the different skill sets they were testing, Johnson said. We were able to go back home and learn from it, and we wanted to come back this year to see how much she improved. It s great to see the interest from the different programs, too. It shows that all of her hard work is paying off. Bill Holbrook is making his Bowling Combine debut this week as he prepares for his second season as head coach at Midland University. He believes the drills and structure of the event provide a great opportunity not only to examine a student-athletes physical skills, but to also look at the mental aspect of their game. I really enjoy the format, and being able to see how a student-athlete moves through and manages the drills is really informative, Holbrook said. When you have the chance to watch someone do the same drill over and over, they won t always find success. Getting to see how they react in those situations and how they bounce back and adjust is something you just won t normally find after watching a few shots. Holbrook and the Warriors found success during the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season as both the men s and women s team advanced to the Intercollegiate Team Championships. Midland senior Nick Pate was named the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most Valuable Player as he capped his collegiate career with a victory at the Intercollegiate Singles Championships. Holbrook knows each student-athlete needs to find themselves in the right setting to grow as a competitor and a student, and he felt his time at the ITRC allowed him to connect with the bowlers, even if they re a year or two away from transitioning to college. I think this setting can really open their eyes to all of the possibilities out there, Holbrook said. In the right environment, a student-athlete can really grow and continue to get better, and having the chance to sit and talk with them lets me see what they re hoping to get out of it and if we can find the right balance for them. The Bowling Combine is open to domestic and international students who have collegiate eligibility remaining and have completed at least their freshman year in high school. Student-athletes must apply and get selected in order to attend the Bowling Combine, which has sold out in each of its seven years. The week at the ITRC was split for the student-athletes. The girls completed their portion of the Bowling Combine from Tuesday through Thursday, while the boys put themselves to the test from Thursday until Saturday. 9 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, August 17, 2017 Page 9 U20 JUNIOR GOLD Continued from Page 1 advantage to 34 pins after the first game, Although Low still was making adjustments in Game 2, he maintained his lead and sealed the title after recording a double in the eighth and ninth frames on his way to a finish. I thought both of those shots were pretty good, but that s when I noticed that the fronts were starting to hook, Low said. Throwing a urethane ball with such a high surface, you expect that to happen at some point. I began making small moves to the right, since I didn t want to do something crazy. I ended up finding a good look on the left lane and gave the shot on the right lane in the ninth a little air time to make sure it got through the front part of the BOWLER FRIENDLY PRO SHOPS & OTHER SERVICES KAM MOSTOWFI c: KAMMOSTOWFI@GMAIL.COM Goodnight Lane Dallas, TX Exotic, Luxury and Economical Cars and Motorcycle Dealer lane. Low recorded his first U20 title as a 16-year-old at the 2013 event in Detroit. After several close calls, including a runner-up finish in 2014, he finished his Junior Gold career by becoming the first player in the boys division to win two U20 titles. I think the distinction to be the first to win U20 twice is pretty special, especially when you look at the list of past winners, Low said. After winning in 2013, my goal was to win twice. I lost to Tylor Greene in 2014, bowled myself out of the top 16 in 2015 and lost in the first round last year. Those three years served as motivation, and to come out a winner to end my junior bowling career is awesome. In those two appearances, however, she was unable to secure a win in the double-elimination format. Upon a return visit to match play in her U20 debut, she had one goal in mind. I had not won a match the past two years, so that really was the main goal heading into match play, Leiendecker said. When I was able to do that, things really started rolling, and I was able to stay calm and focus on what I was trying to achieve. In the title match, Leiendecker may have been nervous on the inside, but she looked like a seasoned veteran as she recorded a total of 16 strikes on her way to scores of and against Johnson. Taking the title approximately 70 miles from home also served as a special moment for Leiendecker, having family and friends on-site at Game of Wickliffe to celebrate the performance with her. I was shaking a lot, but I felt like I kept everything under control, Leiendecker said. It was fun, though, even with the nerves. Moving up to U20, my goal was just to make the cut, so to win in my first year really is amazing. Being able to win in Ohio, with all of my supporters coming to watch, was pretty amazing, too. Six boys and six girls automatically earned spots on Junior Team USA for 2018 through their performances at Junior Gold this week. John Handegard is the leader in PBA50 Tour titles with 14. Tom Baker, Gary Dickinson and Dale Eagle are tied for second place with 12 titles each. Throughout his colorful career as a PBA Tour competitor, winning 38 titles to rank third on the all-time list behind Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47) and Earl Anthony (43), Norm Duke has never had a year with as many close calls as he had during the 2017 PBA50 Tour season. In addition to his lone title in Mooresville, N.C., in May, Duke had three second-place finishes (New Port Richey, Fla.; Anderson, Ind., and Fort Wayne, Ind.), a third-place finish in Hammond, Ind., and a fourth-place finish in the USBC Senior Masters. Former Major League Baseball pitcher John Burkett of Southlake, Fla., was in contention to make his second career championship round appearance in Fort Wayne until the end of the final match play round, eventually finishing ninth for his best finish of the season. Burkett s best career finish was fourth in the 2015 Northern California Classic in his rookie season as a PBA50 Tour player. 11 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, August 17, 2017 Page 11 SENIOR TEAM USA Continued from Page 3 we ve had over the last few months has us seeing the lanes very well, said Bohn, a 35-time PBA Tour champion. This opportunity really does mean a lot to us, and we want to make our country proud. Knowing that I can put on the red, white and blue and represent the United States is an honor, and I hope I can help bring home more gold medals. Mohr also is coming off a couple of exciting wins. He ended a five-year title drought by winning the PBA50 South Shore Open presented by DV8 at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Indiana, for his ninth career PBA50 Tour. Earlier in the summer, he won the 2017 Super Senior Classic, the premier USBC event for bowlers age 60 and older. There s some great talent across the world, and I think we ll have our work cut out for us, but I really like the team we re fielding and know we ll be competitive, said Mohr, who also enjoyed international success as a member of Team USA in 1989, 1991 and I believe we ve all been doing the right things to prepare and stay at the top level competi- tively. I don t think we could be in a better place individually, and now it s time to put it all together. On the women s side, all four team members have been regular competitors on the PWBA Tour, which has included 13 events from California to Florida. They ve covered a lot miles and bowled hundreds of games, each enjoying stints of success, and the variety of lane conditions and formats definitely has them feeling conditioned and prepared. For all four, the PWBA season ended with the recent U.S. Women s Open, an event known to test competitors, both mentally and physically, over 56 games, for those who advance through each round. Hulsenberg, who won the U.S. Women s Open in 2011, turned in the best performance of the group again this year, advancing to the 24-player match-play portion of the event, before finishing 14th overall. The group from the United States will be led by USBC Hall of Famer and Gold coach Bill Spigner of Vernon Hills, Illinois, who is one of seven coaches recently added to the Team USA coaching staff. He is accomplished on the lanes as a competitor and has been on the Bowlers Journal International Top 100 Coaches list since The inaugural World Senior Championships was contested in 2013, also in Las Vegas, and the event is held every two years. The Team USA program performed well at the last edition in 2015, leading the medal count with 14 of the 38 medals. That included sweeping the team titles and adding gold medals in women s doubles (Lucy Sandelin and Paula Vidad) and women s all-events (Sandelin).
