He had shared the previous record of three consecutive titles with fellow Hall of Famer Tom Baker who achieved the feat in It ranks way up there as far as my career accomplishments, said Weber, who has won a record five U.S. Open titles on the PBA Tour. I think this is the best I ve ever felt or thrown the ball for five consecutive weeks in my whole career. Leading Sullins by eight pins in the six frame, Weber threw four consecutive strikes to clinch the match and his eighth career PBA50 Tour title. It was his third PBA50 Tour major title having also won the 2013 United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters. I could see it was tough for Harry to get anything going and when he didn t strike in the ninth I knew I had the match, Weber said. For Weber, who ranks fifth on the all-time PBA Tour titles list with 37 wins and has won a record-tying 10 PBA Tour majors, he ranked his win among his top accomplishments in a professional career that spans more than three decades. It s way up there as far as anything I ve done in my career, said the 53-year-old Weber. 2 Page 2 Thursday, June 9, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention Bowling has been a staple of television sports since its beginnings in the 1950 s. Like the game and sport itself, it has gone through various cycles of popularity. At present, it is enjoying perhaps its most exposure since the pre-pba days of those 1950 s. Many cities had at least one show on the air. Larger cities, like Chicago and New York, aired multiple shows during the week. Two main reasons stand out. First, the game was as popular as it had ever been. The amount of spare time activities were not anywhere near what they are now. Bowling was sold to the public as an easy, leisurely activity. Larger centers of the era also had spectator seats to watch the more elite players compete in travel league and tournament play. The other reason was television needed programming. The confines of a center, and later convention halls with seating for several thousand spectators, provided an ideal set up. Cameras were in fixed positions not requiring a several acre field or larger space to patrol, unlike baseball or football. The picture focused on the bowler, the ball rolling down the lane, By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net and the action of the pins. Electronic graphics were years away from being invented, so the score was kept by hand on a board, usually with a silhouette of a person s back and arm writing on the board. Really, it was pretty simple to document for a director and/or producer, and just as easy to watch. Perhaps it was due to the game looking easy that an audience was drawn. A head-to-head match took an entire ten to fifteen minutes to unfold, making commercial breaks easy to schedule. When more commercial time was demanded from sponsors, action during matches were stopped for two to four minutes for more commercials. Fast forward sixty years and the game and sport still draws on national television. As I mentioned last week, even a month-old replay of a pretty exciting NCAA Women s final averaged 31,000 viewers on ESPNU against some pretty stiff competition. During the 6:00pm to 8:00pm Central time slot two weeks ago Thursday, the early ESPN SportsCenter (all the numbers are averages of viewers at any given time) drew 528,000. On ESPN2, the replay of Around the Horn was watched by 186,000. MLB Network s pregame show 123,000 viewers. The other shows on the same night, NBA and NHL Conference final round games and the big annual national spelling bee, as you might guess, drew a few more viewers. Game 6 of the Golden State - OKC NBA West final on TNT was the most watched of the night (over the air or cable) with an average of 9,999,800 viewers. Game 7 of the Pittsburgh - Tampa NHL East over on NBCSN final drew 2,523,000. The annual Scripps Spelling Bee, in its first primetime airing, averaged a respectable 859,000 viewers. The original live airing of the SFA Nebraska NCAA final on April 11 averaged 91,000 viewers. Other programs dominating viewership in that time slot that night included NCAA Frozen Four hockey on ESPN, and Monster truck rallies on FS1 and FS2. The only fly in the ointment is CBSSN doesn t subscribe to the Nielsen rating service. But the network has enough faith to add the PWBA for the first time and USBC Junior Gold for a second year. That is a statement right there. Jump starting all the bowling we ve seen on television is at least partly due to the great ratings increase of the PBA the last two years. Commissioner Tom Clark was kind enough to answer a few of my questions about the recent success. JPA: How pleased is ESPN about the latest Nielsen numbers through the PBA League shows? Another strong increase for the third straight year must say something about the product viewers are watching. The PBA numbers are pretty good, even compared to cable sports staples, like MMA, UFC, and WWE. Tom Clark: ESPN has been consistently happy with the PBA s ratings performance. Even when we might be slightly disappointed with any particular specific show number, they tell me it is great for the slot and a property they can count on to deliver strong audience figures. JPA: How helpful do you think having college bowling on before the PBAL helped not only the PBA rating, but even the women s college bowling rating? Clark: One of the four weeks of the PBAL, there was a replay of the Women s NCAA Championship but I don t think there was any correlation for ratings success. But bowling did have a good weekend in the context of the potential of that April weekend vs. our more highly-viewed February slots. Interesting ratings stat from that weekend: the live bowling women s NCAA Championship on ESPNU averaged 131,000 Saturday 6:30 to 9 pm (35, ). ON Sunday, a re-air of that show on ESPN2 averaged 237,000 (78,000, 18-49).The PBAL Sunday on ESPN averaged 490,000 (193, 000, 18-49). Meanwhile, MLS live on ESPN 3:30-6pm did average 229,000 (117k 18-49) and Live Arena Football 4-6:30pm did 155,000, (70k, 18-49). So no exaggeration needed to say that live MLS and Live Arena Football can t beat taped women s college bowling and they get trounced by PBA action (and that particular week was the lowest rated of the PBAL shows). And our February TOC did 1 million viewers on average. Hoagland to Direct Lane Pattern Development for USBC Championships ARLINGTON, Texas Nicholas Hoagland of Indianapolis will lead the lane pattern development program for the United States Bowling Congress, working with USBC tournament directors and Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider for USBC events, to set lane patterns for competitions. In addition to signature events such as the USBC Masters and USBC Queens, USBC handles tournament operations for the Professional Women s Bowling Association Tour, U.S. Open and U.S. Women s Open events, the Junior Gold Championships and the USA Bowling National Championship, which are supported by the Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA) and USBC. I am truly honored to be trusted to assist with the creation of competitive bowling environments at these tremendous tournaments, Hoagland said. Lane patterns are such an essential element of these championship events and it will be exciting to work with USBC and Kegel to develop lane conditions that will allow bowlers to showcase their skills. Hoagland has been involved in bowling most of his life, and worked for the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) from as Manager of Consumer Programs. During that time, he was responsible for the launch of the PBA Animal lane patterns Nick has a wealth of knowledge about lane patterns and development, both as a tournament organizer and as a competitor, USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. He understands what it takes to provide competitors with fair and challenging lane conditions, and he will work closely with Kegel and USBC tournament directors to make it happen. Hoagland is the Chief Operating Officer/Chief People Officer for Indianapolis-based Backhaul Direct, LLC, a thirdparty logistics broker. I want to specifically thank Greg Harris, Dylan Murphy, and Steve Harman for the opportunity to serve the bowling community through this independent venture with USBC, Hoagland said. Junior Gold membership reached an all-time high for the sixth consecutive year, with nearly 6,500 members, and spots sold for the Junior Gold Championships also hit a record high with more than 3,700. The Junior Gold program, overseen by the International Bowling Campus Youth Development team, surpassed the 6,000-membership mark last season with 6,200 members and had more than 3,400 youth bowlers qualify for the 2015 Junior Gold Championships. To accommodate the larger field, along with the families and fans who will attend this year s tournament, IBC Youth Development will have athlete registration and the trade show that annually opens the Junior Gold Championships at the 73,000-squre-foot Elements Blue Ribbon Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. This year s tournament will have the largest trade show in the event s history, which will run Saturday, July 16, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. In addition to the trade show, we ll have outstanding presentations from some of the top coaches in the nation, IBC Youth Development Managing Director Gary Brown said. We want to make it a special day for the athletes and their families, and provide them the opportunity to learn more about the sport and what it takes to be successful on the lanes. The Storm Seminars will annual Hoosier Classic, a major collegiate event. In 2015, he received the Gordon Teigen Service Award, presented annually by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) to an individual in recognition of outstanding service to collegiate bowling. Hoagland has served as a director on the USBC Board of Directors, first earning election in 2008 and serving one three-year term. On Sunday, the Junior Gold Championships Opening Ceremony will be held at Victory Field, the home of minor league baseball team Indianapolis Indians. During the last few years, the event has held a closing ceremony but not all bowlers remained by the tournament s end. The opening ceremony will include a state-by-state athlete walkout, along with presentations of 2015 Junior Team USA and the 2015 champions, and the presentation of the Dexter/USBC All- American Team. The opening ceremonies also will have live music, contests, giveaways, and appearances by special celebrity bowlers and will be topped off by a fireworks show. Junior Gold continues to grow and that s a great thing for bowling, USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. All six divisions this year are showing sustainable growth, which is a great indicator of where the program is headed. The local coordinators are driving the program to new heights and we certainly appreciate their passion and dedication. Tom Baker had won three straight PBA50 tourneys in 2006, but even on the regular PBA tour, or as we saw Shawn Maldonado do here in the PBA Southwest Region last year, four straight professional wins is truly in rarefied air. The deciding factor was t0 use the urethane ball to manage the demanding lane condition, a suggestion he got from roommate DJ Archer of Friendswood, Texas. I wouldn t have even tried the urethane ball if DJ hadn t suggested it, Jones said. I was just looking for something that would work on these lanes. I just didn t have good ball reaction doing anything else. I bowled 240 against Frankie and I got some pretty fortunate hits in that match. Then I figured urethane is what got me to the title match so I was going to ride it. 5 McEwan Grabs Top Seed for PWBA Wichita Open Finals WICHITA, Kansas Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y., was a slow starter during qualifying at the 2016 Professional Women s Bowling Association Wichita Open, but had no trouble in match play to earn the top seed at Northrock Lanes. McEwan averaged more than 257 during match play to claim the No. 1 seed for the TV finals, which will be taped June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and air Tuesday, July 5 on CBS Sports Network. McEwan opened match play with games of 279, 268 and 276 for an 823 series, the first 800 series rolled by a PWBA player since the re-launch of the tour in The 24-year-old right-hander followed with 276, 233 and 211 for a six-game total of 1,543. McEwan, coming off a third-place finish at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Queens, notched a 4-2 matchplay record in the Group B standings for a 5,590 pinfall total, which included 30 pins for each victory. I don t really shoot high games or high series or have big sets like that. I m more of a grinder who doesn t give away pins, who will occasionally pop a big game. That s usually my strength. I don t even have words to describe what was going through my head because I was in such shock. I was just bowling. Saturday s competition began with the 32 cashers bowling a six-game block to determine the top 12 players for round-robin match play. While Cassandra Leuthold of Lincoln, Nebraska, had the high pinfall total during the final qualifying round Saturday morning with 1,357, McEwan fired a 753 set in her final three games to take the No. 12 seed. I definitely thought I was out of the tournament three or four times, said McEwan, who won 2015 The Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship. The three qualifying blocks were the same for me because I went minus for the first three.
