1 Our 60th Year VOL. 60, NO JULY 21, 2016 O Keefe Captures Third Title at Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open GREEN BAY, Wis. - Shannon O Keefe of O Fallon, Illinois, wasted no time in the title match, defeating Colombia native Clara Guerrero of Pflugerville, Texas, , to win the Pepsi Professional Women s Bowling Association Lincoln Open, her third career PWBA title and second of the 2016 season. O Keefe never trailed in the match, beginning with three consecutive strikes to set the tone. Guerrero began the match with a strike of her own, but followed with an open frame and two consecutive spares to trail by 32 pins after four frames. In the fifth frame, Guerrero made a ball change and immediately doubled to stay within striking distance. But following spares in the fourth and fifth frames, O Keefe quickly climbed back on the strike train with five consecutive on the way to victory. It s surreal, said O Keefe, who led after the qualifying and match-play rounds at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. I don t even know how that happened. For O Keefe, her success in 2016 might not be possible without her previous television experiences. Through repetition, the 37-year-old right-hander has learned how to control her emotions when competing on television. The difference is the more you put yourself in the position, the more you get comfortable with those nervy feelings, the quicker I m able to manage them. said O Keefe, who is a 12-time Team USA member. Before it wouldn t be until the fifth, sixth or seventh frame until I would settle down. Now, it s almost the first shot. I just make sure I stay behind the foul line, the ball gets off my hand and it goes away. So, I think that helps a lot. Hibbitts and Petrin outbattled runners-up Chris Johnson of Garland, Texas, and Anthony Simonsen from Austin, Texas, for a decision to claim the title. 2 Page 2 Thursday, July 21, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention Despite not having the best time at this year s USBC Open Championships, I did get to see another group roll its winning performance. Higgy s Aquarium posted its second place team score on our squad, then the next morning, shattered the previous leading mark to lead team all-events by 311 pins. Ok, how shattering was it? While standing next to USBC s Matt Cannizzaro as he prepared for another Facebook Live report, he showed me the number 700. I didn t know what that meant at first, then quietly told me that s all the five needed combined the final game of singles to take the lead. I ve been lucky to have seen leads taken over either the final frame or even the final ball. Knowing Higgy s would more than likely take the lead in the seventh or eighth frame was astonishing. As focused as they were at the time, the five members didn t know until the last few frames they not only had the lead, but possessed it for the previous two frames. And what a performance it was. Their pins fell as easily as if they were bowling on a house shot. After word got around them the lead was theirs, they stayed focused on the task at hand, being each other s set of eyes, getting every pin they could until it was over. Even though I saw their group hug after the last ball from the squad room on Facebook Live, it never gets old witnessing a team post its eagle-winning score. ############### Now that the PWBA has made its mark in the sports world as a viable entity, another step needs to occur, an ESPY for best female bowler. Let s put ourselves back to last Wednesday at the 2016 ES- PYs under the assumption the gals had their category. Who could have been nominated as top female bowler? In no particular order, one could read the names Danielle McEwan, Stefanie Johnson, Liz Johnson, Kelly Kulick, and Shannon O Keefe. Liz would be the prohibitive favorite with three titles, including the Women s US. Open and the USBC Queens. FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM She also led average, points, and earnings. But there were others who had pretty good years as well. Kelly made six championship round appearances (no titles, though), Stefanie made the match play round ten times (one title) and was named Rookie of the Year, Danielle was second in cashes and earnings (one major title), Shannon was fourth in earnings and suffered that heart-breaking loss in the Open to Liz. So my hypothetical 2016 ESPY Best Female Bowler vote goes to Liz. ################ An old friend of JPA was inducted into the Michigan USBC BA Hall of Fame recently. If you ve ever met Charlie Tapp, one thing you notice immediately is, he is not shy. That being said, you knew his speech would probably be entertaining, part of me wished I could see it. Then this popped up on YouTube. In the first JPA Instant Classic, a man who once shared a radio show with heavyweight boxer Scott LeDoux and future Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, here Tapp s acceptance speech. ( watch?v=ol2hz8v8mhk) ################ One Friday night a couple of weeks ago, a familiar voice to hockey fans was heard broadcasting a baseball game. At the invite of MLB Network, Hockey Hall of Fame announcer Mike Doc Emrick sat in with Bob Costas for their Cub-Pirate Showcase Game and called a few innings. If you re old enough (at least SASBA age), you might remember a few names who MUNSELL Continued from Page 1 passion of Bobbies was skiing, the cold weather and traveling. Bobbie graduated from Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1973, with a bachelor s degree in accounting. Then in 1997 she graduated with a master s degree in business administration from (TCU) and in 2003 she completed 52 hours at Brite Divinity School (TCU) towards a masters of divinity. Due to her patriotism and love for her country, Bobbie enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserve on Sept. 23, 1983, and attended basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in January After basic military training, she attended the Finance Technical School at Sheppard Air Force Base in March 1984 where she graduated as an honor student. Immediately after technical training, she went to work at the 7th Bombardment Wing Accounting and Finance Office at Carswell Air Force Base. She was hired in the Civil Service Army Corps of Engineers in November 1984 and transferred to the 301st Fighter Wing Reserve Pay Office as a Continued on Page 6 subbed for Chris Schenkel on ABC while he was off on Wide World of Sports assignments. Sometimes when you hear sitting in the booth, it means just that. No prep, no homework, just commenting as a guest of the announce crew. But this was different. Emrick prepped for this as if he was the regular announcer, armed with stats and plenty of background. The best example if this was following an anecdote from Costas about Pirate manager Clint Hurdle. Costas explained Hurdle was one of the prize Kansas City Royals prospects in their first stretch of glory years in the late 1970 s. Emrick then dropped on us and Costas a story even he hadn t heard. Emrick said Hurdle wanted to continue playing baseball in college and was touring the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. Legendary head coach Bo Schembechler wanted Hurdle to only play football. That was enough to turn Hurdle away from Big Blue and commit to Miami of Ohio, where he continued to play baseball and football before being drafted by the Royals. Emrick later interned with the Beaver County Times, a suburban Pittsburgh paper, in the early 1970 s After being reminded where his career is now, the then-general manager of the paper recently somewhat jokingly told me, At least we got him a decent start when he interned for me. There s another career my dad would like to take credit for starting. ############### Finally this week, word has spread that another 1960 s era center has closed. As of Tuesday last week, Willowbrook Lanes in southwest suburban Chicago closed after 53 years of service. Home to a handful PBA Midwest Regionals in the 1990 s and 2000 s, two memorable title matches come to mind. The first was Dale Traber balking midway in a delivery three times due to birthday party noise before throwing the clinching strike. The second was Scott Smith matching his opponent with the front ten strikes before throwing the last two for a rare title match 300 game. But Willowbrook is more known locally for two other little known things. Shortly after the center s grand opening, the first 300 game in center history was rolled by a Catholic Jesuit priest. In addition, an original investor in the business had his name on the outside sign. As was common of the times, professional athletes were part owners of bowling centers, this one being no different. Saturday Night Live s Da Superfans might have bowled there, considering it may have been a sort of sacred ground. At its 1963 opening, Mike Ditka s Willowbrook Lanes was a jewel of Chicagoland bowling. 9 Pin No Tap Handicap Doubles Tournament $50 Team entry - Sport Shot Sunday, August 21 12pm $500 Guaranteed 1st Place based on 36 team entries Bowl 4 games - Crossovers - Handicap: 80% of rowlettbowlarama 5021 Lakeview Parkway Rowlett, TX

As a result of the disqualifications, there is a new Classified All-Events leader for the event held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nevada. Average integrity continues to be a serious issue for our sport and USBC is committed to aggressively enforcing our rules in this area, USBC Executive Director Chad Murphy said. 8 Page 8 Thursday, July 21, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Pete Weber Looks to Continue Record-Breaking Season in PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship WELCH, Minn. Defending PBA50 Player of the Year Pete Weber, who will be trying for his third consecutive major win of the season, tops the list of PBA stars 50 and over who will compete in the inaugural PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm July at Island Xtreme Bowl in Welch, Minn. The Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open continues a busy month of July on PBA s online bowling channel Xtra Frame. PBA fans will be able to catch all the action beginning Monday, July 18 with first round qualifying. The third major of the 2016 PBA50 Tour season will be a scaled-down version of the PBA Tour s PBA World Championship, providing a test of versatility and endurance by employing qualifying, match play and stepladder final stages on the PBA s Viper, Chameleon and Scorpion lane conditions. Each of the three stages also will award a PBA50 regional title. Combined qualifying pinfall totals for the three stages will determine the match play finalists for the PBA50 World Championship, leading up to a five-player stepladder final on Saturday, July 23. Weber is currently in the middle of an incredible season in which he has already won a record five PBA50 Tour tournaments including a record four consecutive. Among those titles are victories in the season s first two majors, the Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global and the USBC Senior Masters in June. The fourth and final major of the season will be the PBA50 National Championship to benefit Riley Hospital for Children Aug at Signature Lanes in Elkhart, Ind. In the two PBA50 tournaments he has not won this season, Weber s worst finish was a fourth in the seasonopening Pasco County Florida Open, which was won by Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Continued on Page 6 Peter Weber At Cowtown Bowling Palace Johnson turns in 798, Langham compiles 677 Ray 300 Chris Johnson, from the Ft. You believe in your abilities because you know how hard you ve worked, O Keefe said. You know the time you ve put in, the sacrifices you ve made, but to get so close and to have things always not end in your favor, to always be the bridesmaid and not the bride, you ask yourself, Do I actually have what it takes to be a Liz, to be a Kelly. Do I have that because I don t know? So, to get that first one, and get the monkey off my back, this is just icing on the cake now. It s that first one that means the most. Guerrero, who won the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship earlier this season, earned her spot into the title match after defeating 2015 PWBA Player of the Year and United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Liz Johnson, Johnson, the No. 3 seed, led the match until the seventh frame, where her only open gave the lead to Guerrero, who remained clean and tossed a three-bagger starting in the sixth frame. Johnson doubled in frames eight and nine and stepped up in the 10th frame with a chance to win the match, but left a 2 pin on the first shot to allow Guerrero to advance. In the opening match, Johnson struck on five of her first six shots on the way to defeating No. 4 seed April Ellis of Jackson, Tennessee, All qualifying and matchplay rounds of the Pepsi PWBA Lincoln Open were held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June The stepladder finals were held June 26 at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in conjunction with the Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship, and the finals of the PWBA Wichita Open and PWBA Greater Detroit Open.
