In his first best two-of-three-game match, Simonsen defeated amateur Clint Johnson of Fort Worth, 2-0, and then edged Mike Bailey of Irving, Texas, , in the one-game semifinal round. Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio, may have been disappointed by the show she and Lindsay Boomershine of Perry, Utah, put on in the championship match of the 2016 Professional Women s Bowling Association St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open, but the sound of two-time PWBA champion over the public address system definitely had a mood-changing ring to it. Restrepo, who won the PWBA Greater Detroit Open earlier in the year for her first Rocio Restrepo PBA Southwest Region to Induct Three into their Hall of Fame KATY, Texas - The PBA Southwest Region has announced that Wes Malott, Rick Lawrence, and Chris Skillings will be inducted into the PBA Southwest Region Hall of Fame at the Grand Casino, Hotel and Resort in Shawnee, Okla., on Saturday, September 17. 2 Page 2 Thursday, September 8, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention When I heard Danielle McEwan and Kelly Kulick were appearing on the Fox and Friends morning news show to promote the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship last week, I hate to admit it, but part of me still cringes. It s a little of the glass half empty or how stupid are the talking heads going make this look routine that I have seen over the years. I know, I know, it s been awhile, but I really got tired of bowling getting thrown under the bus any list of things, real or imaginary. This one is tricky. They can say they work out, run on a treadmill, lift this amount of weight, blah, blah, blah, but can they coordinate a low impact timing of an arm swing while walking at the same time? Occasional bowling does help, but like any of the pros can tell you, doing it with the lights on is a whole different experience. When I watch professional television anchors/reporters bowl, or try to bowl, nowadays on camera what I watch for are a couple of things. Are they slightly athletic? Newer co-host Ainsley Earhart did something I don t remember Hoda and Kathie Lee doing with Natalie Savant last summer on NBC s Today Show. Substitute host Pete Doocy threw a couple of shots, including picking up the 2-8 spare, in his street shoes with a Viz-A-Ball, custom drilled for the occasion. The main demonstration, thankfully, was a little different. Both Kelly and Danielle threw shots on camera and answered some pretty common questions we all have gotten from media types not exposed to the game. Looking at it from someone with zero knowledge of what goes on in our little corner of the world, you d be surprised how often the question of spin comes up. What was really meant here was hook and angle into the pocket. One of the best answers I saw about this was given by USBC Hall of Famer Jean Havlisch to a Minneapolis public television show about ten years ago. For years, the Minnesota State Bowling Proprietors had a stub lane with a full pinsetter sitting on the back of a trailer. It would visit town festivals, county fairs, always winding up as it does this time of year at the Minnesota State Fair over Labor Day weekend. Havlisch was asked what the advantage of a hook was or TONY FRANKLIN (tony@thebowlingnews.net) OWNER/PUBLISHER GENIE FRANKLIN (genie@thebowlingnews.net) OWNER/PUBLISHER TYSON BRANAGAN (t.branagan@yahoo.com) STAFF WRITER LANCE RAGLAND STAFF WRITER CLINT DACY (clint@thebowlingnews.net) COLUMNIST MARK LONDON (mark@thebowlingnews.net) COLUMNIST SUSIE MINSHEW (strikeability@gmail.com) COLUMNIST DON WRIGHT (wrightdk@hot.rr.com ) COLUMNIST BUBBA FLINT (flintsworld@aol.com) CARTOONIST Note: Opinions expressed by our independent columnists and feature writers are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Bowling News. FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM curved path versus a straight ball. Her answer was pretty simple. She said a ball coming in at an angle has a better chance to start the chain reaction to knock down all the pins. A straight ball would miss the 5-pin and perhaps even the 8-pin. Here s another huge step bowling has made to impressing mainstream media. Even with the tennis U.S. Open going on in nearby Flushing Meadow, add all the other stuff going on in and around New York City the last traditional weekend of summer, the fact a national morning news show had time for us is still impressive. ############# Inside Bowling s Mike Flanagan recently launched his YouTube vlog (short for video blog, for those over 40) channel. In the spirit of other vloggers, he has his own unique visuals, including a few features with shots from a drone over the countryside. I ll have more in the coming weeks on The Pulse as he comments on his long-awaited, well-planned trip into new media. ############# Another media icon was officially retired this week. Following the 8-track tape player and video discs, the final VCR rolled off the line at Japan s Funai Electric last week, ending their thirty years of production. Since 1956, video tape recorders and players were used mainly in television stations as a reusable source to record and playback pictures and sound. Even in my training in the early 1980 s, we still used one inch tape cassettes and editors as broadcast outlets converted to a smaller 3 / 4 format through the remainder of the decade. Yes, we had heard the digital format was not that much further away, but that didn t happen until the 90 s. I don t think there will be a rebirth of the VCR in either Beta of VHS format, like the vinyl album has seen in music, but it is, nonetheless a sign of the times. ############# When you train to be a professional media reporter, examples are given to try to illuminate certain circumstances that will likely unfold. What you will see over the years is a wide spectrum of events and the emotions surrounding them. An example of absolute joy could be those in a small town high school winning a state or national title of some kind, sports or scholastic. It s as much a celebration for the parents reacting to their kids success. They are often just as entertaining an interview. Then, there is the opposite side of that joy. What has been taught at my alma mater, St. Cloud State, about absolute grief and sadness is the October 1989 abduction of 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling from the nearby town of St. Joseph, Minnesota. An advantage of being in this business is getting the story behind the story. Having worked with and having gone to school with other reporters covering this story, some covering it since the very beginning, one can get a much more unfiltered look at what happens if the worst case scenario becomes reality. I think this win will impact many other players like how Joseph Schooling has impacted all of Singapore with his win in swimming at the Olympics, New said. What he said was really true, even people from the smallest country can do great things. So, I believe our neighboring countries will look at us and say wow, if they can do it, so can we. The PWBA Tour experienced an influx of international talent this season with Team Singapore playing a big role in the second year of the re-launched Tour. New capped off a season that included third-place finishes at the Nationwide PWBA Sonoma County Open and PWBA Storm Sacramento Open, and a fourth place finish at the U.S. Women s Open. In the process, New became the fourth player from Singapore over the last two seasons to win a PWBA event or major championship. The 24-year-old right-hander entered the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship needing to defeat fellow rookie Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, in the opening round of match play and Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, in Round 2, to secure enough points to win the award. New is the first international rookie of the year since Australia s Cara Honeychurch in New earned her spot in Sunday s championship match by defeating two-time PWBA champion Rocio Restrepo of Louisville, Ohio, Tan knocked off Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, , in the first semifinal. Despite the loss, Johnson, a USBC Hall of Famer, claimed her second consecutive PWBA Player of the Year award. The race for the postseason honor came down to Johnson and Restrepo, with Restrepo needing to win the Tour Championship to claim the award. With Restrepo s loss in the second semifinal, Johnson became the first player since Wendy Macpherson in 2000 to win the award in consecutive years. This year, Johnson led the Tour in points, earnings and tied for the lead in championship-round appearances. It makes you step up your game, and I have to stay strong mentally and physically. I m very proud, and I m very happy. PWBA members qualified for the Tour Championship by either winning a title during the 2016 season or earning enough competition points. 5 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, September 8, 2016 Page 5 RESTREPO Continued from Page 1 shot 133 in a 1985 loss. I obviously feel happy that I won, but I definitely wanted to throw it better, said Restrepo, a longtime member of the Colombian national bowling team. Sometimes, the lights and how the lanes are broken down in practice can change things quite a bit. I just made sure to stick to my strategy, and I stayed focused on doing what I needed to do to stay ahead. Restrepo joins three-time winner Shannon O Keefe of O Fallon, Illinois, and reigning PWBA Player of the Year Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York (two wins), as the only competitors with multiple titles in Along with the $10,000 top prize, the win gave Restrepo enough competition points to land her in second place on the 2016 PWBA points list, earning her an automatic spot in the semifinals of the upcoming Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship, which will be held in Midlothian, Virginia, from Sept Not only will the PWBA Tour Championship wrap up the 2016 season, it also will determine the player of the year, which is based on total points for the season. Heading into the final event, only two competitors have a chance at the honor Restrepo and Johnson. If Restrepo wins the tournament, she gets the player-of-the-year nod and redemption for a bitter end to the 2015 season. Anything less than a win from Restrepo, and Johnson repeats. It feels good that I m actually seeded onto the Tour Championship show this year, especially after the heartbreaking loss to Kelly one match before TV last year, Restrepo said. I left there not knowing when I would get a chance like that again, and that I d have to wait a whole year for that event. This year, I ve been more consistent and didn t miss any events, which actually cost me a better seeding last year. Now, it feels good to know all I have to do is focus on two matches and 24 good shots like I did today, even though it didn t show in the scores. Restrepo earned her spot in the final of the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open with a semifinal win against Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey. The 28-year-old right-hander led by 25 pins after four frames and was able to hang on, despite a chopped spare in the eighth-frame. Despite two splits in the opening TV match of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open, Kulick managed to edge 2015 PWBA Rookie of the Year Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, , when Johnson failed to double in her final frame. Since the return of the PWBA in 2015, Kulick has made an unmatched 10 championship-round appearances but has been unable to find the winner s circle. Kulick, Johnson and Restrepo all now are headed to the PWBA Tour Championship, but Boomershine again finds herself just short of the points-list cutline. Boomershine needed to win the PWBA St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open to earn her spot in the seasonending event. Ever since I graduated, I ve had the chance compete in events like the Queens and U.S. Open, but I felt like that wasn t enough because it only happened once a year, Restrepo said. I really wanted a chance to see and show how versatile I could be, and the Tour has allowed me to do that. I know I still have a lot of work to do, but these wins really have boosted my confidence for other events. I finally did it, and now, I want to keep getting titles and moving forward with my career. All qualifying and match play rounds of the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Open were held at Seminole Lanes in Seminole, Florida, on July and contested on a challenging 40-foot oil pattern.
