Bowl- Sean Rash Wins PBA Detroit Open for Back-to- Back Fall Swing Titles ALLEN PARK, Mich. After winning his 10th career PBA Tour title in the PBA Badger Open last week, former PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash didn t waste any time starting on his next 10 titles by winning the PBA Detroit Open for his second consecutive win in the final championship event of the 2016 PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes. In a low scoring match on the demanding 40-foot PBA Bear lane condition, Rash beat rival and top qualifier Jason Belmonte, , in the title match of the fourth event of the PBA Fall Swing. The finals aired Wednesday on CBS Sports Network. As the tournament leader, Belmonte had his choice of selecting the Wolf, Bear or Badger Fall Swing lane oil patterns and chose the Bear pattern. ers who qualified in places 7 through 12 for both boy s and girl s division would then bowl one more game with two highest one game scores earning a spot in the match play. Guerrero Looks to Make History at 2016 QubicaAMF World Cup ARLINGTON, Texas - Traveling the globe as one of the world s top bowlers has given Colombia s Clara Guerrero the chance to experience countless locations and cultures. This week, she ll make her first trip to China, and while she s excited about the latest stamp in her passport, there s also some anxiousness about the historic possibilities of her appearance at the 2016 QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Shanghai. Last year in Las Vegas, Guerrero became the sixth woman to win the event for a second time and third to win in back-to-back years. Now, she can become the first woman to win the coveted World Cup three times. I think I ll be a little Tony Franklin, Publisher hours a day, so we were pretty excited to get the opportunity to meet a lot of the guys and see how a radio show works. We got there about 9am and were greeted by Mike Sirois who is the Producer of the Norm & D Invasion show. He walked us back to their office area where they were doing last minute prep for the 10-Noon show. Now, I was expecting that the guys would be pretty busy, Continued on Page 2 Clara Guerrero bit anxious to compete and experience this great tournament again, but I don t want to add any unnecessary pressure, said Guerrero, a 34-year-old right-hander and 2009 inductee Continued on Page 5

They were extremely friendly and made sure to shake everyone s hand and tell us what they were working on. Totally unexpected. Then we went into the studio as they took over after the Musers show, again, each member of the Dunham and Miller show made sure to shake our hand and introduce themselves. I m not this friendly with people I know! Now for the fun part, the actual two-hour radio show. They do zero rehearsing; they just take the mic and go. Very little is scripted, when one host has an idea, they give a quick heads up to the other and then just go with it. I did find it funny that when the Musers show was over, they load up their backpacks and they are out of there. It s possible that they went off to another room and worked on the next days show, but I just got the feeling that once their show is over they gone. Bottom line a sports talk radio show was more fun to watch than I expected it to be, and that is probably because the hosts were super friendly and included us in their world. It s one of those jobs I would have always loved to have never going to happen, but it seems to be as much fun as I d hoped it would be. Genie did create a new t-shirt to wear to the show, and needless to say it was a big hit for obvious reasons. I mean, who doesn t want a blinged out shirt with their show name on it! ALS, 25, has never been scared to bowl against the best, and this was an especially impressive victory as he was literally in the lion s den trying to get the title against so many locals. It felt really good beating the people I beat to get the title as everyone was either a current or former Wichita State star. Especially with this being in their home center, and they obviously support each other a lot, so every match the whole center was pretty much behind whoever I was bowling, which I think actually fueled me more to win, said Lavery-Spahr. Anthony has been on a roll lately, and attributes the success to understanding his mechanics better, and also a second set of eyes from a friend. For me it s just about my timing... I get out of rhythm from time to time and it s bad but when my timing is good it s usually really good. Brian Lohse told me a while back that he noticed whenever I bowl bad, my feet are really fast, so I started focusing on making sure my feet were slow and so far it s been really good, he added. SEAN RASH Continued from Page 1 ninth frame, failing to convert either one. This (lane conditioning) pattern will eat you up, said Rash, who was the No. 2 qualifier for the finals. It s probably the toughest condition we bowl on. It can be like an obstacle course. You take a tough condition like this and then you throw in the changing environment of bowling on TV where there are so many variables, from the changing lane conditions frame-to-frame to the different styles of the players in the earlier matches, Rash continued. It s not like bowling on league night, believe me. The PWBA Tour Championship site will be announced at a later date. The 2017 season once again will feature four major events, including the United States Bowling Congress Queens, PWBA Players Championship, U.S. Women s Open and the PWBA Tour Championship. Similar to 2016, 13 of the 14 events will be televised on CBS Sports Network, including live telecasts of all four majors. I guess it s time to start making travel plans for 2017, said PWBA spokesperson Kelly Kulick. But really, it is great to see the PWBA returning to several centers that have given us tremendous support over the last two years. The new venues allow us an opportunity to showcase the tour to more bowlers and fans, and, hopefully, attract elite bowlers from surrounding areas. One of the new venues on the 2017 schedule is Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Twotime PWBA Tour champion Kendra Gaines is general manager of Aloma Bowl, part of the chain of centers that includes Boardwalk Bowl, and she was instrumental in bringing the Tour back to Orlando. I wanted to bring the PWBA back to Orlando to showcase the talented women in professional bowling to our community, Gaines said. As a former tour player, I enjoyed having a Florida swing because it was a great destination for bowling fans of all ages. 5 GUERRERO Continued from Page 1 into the World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame. As always, I plan to do my best. I know the training and hours of preparation have been there, but I still need to treat this like any other event and focus on one day and one shot at a time. I can t think about what ve I ve done in the past. Guerrero will lead a field of more than 65 women onto the lanes at Hao s Bowling in downtown Shanghai s Luwan Sports Complex, while the men s field is expected to feature nearly 90 competitors. Traditionally, the QubicaAMF World Cup includes representatives from more than 80 countries. Qualifying at the 2016 World Cup will take place over four days, beginning Oct. 17, and this year s winners will be determined Oct. 22. Representatives for the United States will be 2016 United States Bowling Congress Team USA Trials winners Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, and Marshall Kent of Yakima, Washington. McEwan finished fourth at the World Cup in 2012 and 2013, while Kent was the runner-up in In her first title defense, Guerrero got off to a slow start with a 160 opening-game but climbed her way to the top seed for the stepladder finals, where she defeated two-time World Cup champion Shannon Pluhowsky of the United States, 2-0. In the men s championship match, Wu Siu Hong defeated South Africa s Francois Louw, 2-0, to become the first bowler from Hong Kong to hoist the World Cup. Hong will not be back in 2016 to defend his title. The World Cup first was contested in 1965, and the tournament now is considered one of the sport s most prestigious singles titles. It also is recognized as the largest event in the sport in terms of number of countries competing. Competitors this year will bowl 20 games over four days, before the field is cut to the top 24 men and top 24 women for eight additional games. After 28 games, total pinfall will determine the eight bowlers in each division for eight-games of round-robin match play. The top four men and top four women after 36 games, including bonus pins, will advance to the new knockoutstyle semifinals, where the No. 1 seed will face the No. 4 qualifier and No. 2 and No. 3 will do battle. The winners of each match will earn a spot in the championship game. Entering the 2016 tournament, Guerrero feels sharper than she did a year ago, thanks to a successful 14-week season on the Professional Women s Bowling Association Tour, where she picked up her first PWBA win at the 2016 Go Bowling PWBA Players Championship in June. She also found success at the 2016 Pan American Bowling Confederation Adult Championships, held in Cali, Colombia, as she helped Team Colombia claim the women s team gold medal for the first time. 9 Pin No Tap Handicap Doubles Tournament $50 Team entry - Sport Shot Sunday, October 23 12pm $500 Guaranteed 1st Place based on 36 team entries Bowl 4 games - Crossovers - Handicap: 80% of rowlettbowlarama 5021 Lakeview Parkway Rowlett, TX Among the competitors on the women s side in Shanghai will be two-time winner Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic, who finished second in her bid for a third consecutive title in For more information about the 2016 QubicaAMF World Cup, visit com. 6 Page 6 Thursday, October 20, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention It s been said some sports organizations don t listen to their fans, some companies don t listen to their customers, and some politicians don t listen to their constituents. Then something like this happens. According to the Chicago Tribune columnist Phil Rosenthal, due to tremendously negative response on social media last week, Fox Sports has decided to change the position of the center field camera at Wrigley Field during the Chicago Cubs postseason run. During the National League Division Series, that camera was in the upper level of the famed center field bleachers in a direct line with home plate and the pitcher s rubber. This allowed better coverage from the computer graphic showing the batter s strike zone. What the viewers will see during the National League Championship Series between By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net the Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers (and in addition as Rosenthal jokingly refers to as the series after that ) is the traditional view from the longtime camera position, which dates back to at least the 1950 s, well into the second decade of Chicago s WGN-TV broadcasting all Cub home games. That vantage point is halfway up the bleachers, showing the pitcher on the left half and the batter/catcher/ umpire in the middle of the right half of the screen. All this happened after only two games, Game 1 on Fox Sports 1 and Game 2, shown on MLB Network. Rosenthal quotes Mike Davies, Fox Sports senior vice president of field and technical operations who said he and the network listened to and read viewers comments. They made it very clear on social media they preferred the traditional camera location. This camera move bucks the trend of how sports television coverage have slowly morphed into vantage points seen on video games. Because it is a computer designed image, the viewer can see the action on the game from literally anywhere. That partially inspired the overhead camera directly over the field, court, or rink (either attached to cables or an overhead scoreboard) on many NFL, NBA, and NHL games. Especially with the graphic showing the superimposed strike zone, some broadcasters will use a second camera position for that while employing another camera in a more traditional spot. Some have tried using only one position. That is easier in the new parks, because they had camera positions already built in place. The remaining older parks, like Fenway Park and Wrigley Field, opened well before the creation of television (and radio, for that matter), and have had positions awkwardly inserted somewhere, often sacrificing a few spectator seats. There have been various camera positions on PBA telecasts other than the standard three- camera setup. Starting around 1977, there were mobile hand-held cameras showing vantage points from the floor, along-side the bowler waiting for his next turn, and later in the late 90 s and 2000 s with the crane-mounted camera for overhead shots during arena finals. But I can t recall hearing anything about players or fans requesting different camera positions. ############## To the untrained eye, bowling is a simple game. Add in all the factors my eight Dwayne Winstead s freewheeling = 753 Sunday Night Mixed series headed the honor roll for the week at Red Bird Lanes. Wendy Jones, also from the Sunday Night Mixed group, paced the ladies with a tidy = 583 set. Cyndy McKenrick, Cathey s league mate, paced the lady bowlers with a sparkling = 574 set. Danny Tabb , Cheryl Tabb , Rob Casella , Brian Butler (9 pin, no tap, 4 games) , regular readers know and have been peppered about for almost twenty years now, especially those which did not exist then, and it is a little more complex. So how does one describe some of those minute details? Had an open bowler walk into the shop last Friday night asking about why his Brunswick Power Groove hooked more than his Columbia TI-Boss. After watching him throw a couple of shots, I asked At Ennis All Star Bowl Cathey nails 681 Continued on Page 8 At Red Bird Lanes Winstead banks 753 Darlene Smith , Gloria Molina , Shannon Monk , Joanne Adams , Tommy Moreland, Sr , Shannon Monk , Tim McGlothin , Angela Davis-White Charles Venters , Rosemary Hunsaker , John DeCapua , Lois Gibson , Glenn Goodrich , Angela Chalmers , Gary Foster , Cherry Ray Jimmie Hawkins , Eddie Mae Williams , Tommy Moreland , Gilda Barrett , Ray McClellan (2 games) , Louanne McGhee (2 games) Leslie Ann Brackney (9 pin, no tap, 4 games) Randy Childress (9 pin, no tap, 4 games) , April Hopkins (9 pin, no tap, 4 games) , Benny Butler (9 pin, no tap, 4 games) , Tim Gilmore , Lauren Cathey Gary Thomas , Ryne McKenrick , Billy Adams , Mikayla Davis , John Gray , Myrna Adams , Tracy Holloway , Mary Sikes Sunday & Monday Nights 9 PM to 2 AM $1.50 games Wednesdays 9 AM to 11 PM $2.00 games Red Bird Lanes We open at 9 AM EVERY Day 1114 S. 8 Page 8 Thursday, October 20, 2016 THE BOWLING NEWS JUST PAYING ATTENTION Continued from Page 6 where he usually bowled. He mentioned a local boutique center, and occasionally here at Emerald Bowl. As a left-handed bowler, with his thumb fully inserted, he stood far right and tried to hook the ball through the center part of the lane. There are a couple of other things of note here. His two bowling balls had a right-handed grip, thus, the pin was in his track on both, and the Kegel lane machine had made its nightly Mark Plagens award-winning = 856 Pepsi Classic session headed the leader boards for the week at Plano Super Bowl. Greg Staton and Jim Stephens followed close behind Plagens with award-winning 816 and 800 series respectively. Staton, from the Sportsman group, downed an 280/816 series while Stephens fired an 276/800 Monday Classic Trio set, Lisa Wasson, also from the Pepsi Classic group, dominated scoring last week for the ladies with a booming = At Plano Super Bowl Plagens uncorks 299/856, Wasson blisters 685 Staton 816, Stephens 800, Sparlin set. His approach was pretty good, but didn t know lanes were oiled or oiled in a certain way. So when I explained there was oil and there was more in the center third of the lane tapered out to 40 feet, he quickly picked up why the ball reaction was not what he was expecting. By moving everything left about 10 boards, he had his new favorite line and ball reaction and saw the real difference between the TI-Boss and the Power Groove About every five to ten years or so, I get an encounter in the pro shop like this from someone who for whatever reason hasn t been exposed to this part of the game. Next time he sees a PBA telecast, I guarantee you, he ll now know all about that tinted lane oil. ############ In honor of Sean Rash s tenth and eleventh PBA titles at the recent Fall Swing in Detroit, I would normally direct you to his first title in 2006 for this week s JPA Lost Classic. The problem is the video isn t to be found in the usual places. So instead, here s his second career title, the PBA Beltway Classic show from Baltimore in its entirety, also Wallentine Tommy Yetts, Jr , Monica Adams , Ansel Goldgar , Susan Lee , Jim Monroe , Mary Cullen , Cindy Mann , Devin Johnson Karen Clevenger , Linda Davidson , Ruth Carnes , Gerald Marquardt , Don Coble , John McCall Lynda O Keeffe , Michael Trammell Kelli Spancer , Will Benson , Diane Wallentine , Susan Lee , Stacy Stary , Robert House , Linda Davidson , Richard Steffen Marilyn Frantz , Butch Warren , Stephanie Calbert , Jeff O Dell , Shannon Smith , Jeremy Bostock , Rhonda Gibson , Mark Plagens (4 games) Lisa Wasson (4 games) 889, Gary Suder , LaRae Pritchard in ( com/watch?v=tmydewmpbzi) ############# Possibly next week, baseball s World Series could be returning to the corner of Clark and Addison in Chicago s Lakeview neighborhood for Live Stream Schedule Sponsored By the first time since If it does, my long suffering Cub fan lovely bride of mine has promised to celebrate in a way I have not seen before.
