Badovinac started the championship match strong with four strikes, but two late open frames allowed a late charge by Williams to win the match and the $1,200 first place check. On Sunday, Schissler, who won the same event in 2017 for his first PBA title, won six of his seven matches in the eight-game round robin match play finals to build a comfortable 122-pin lead over qualifying leader Keith Lesko Texas, and Ricky Schissler of from Prosper, Texas. Schissler s Brighton, Colo., won titles in a win over Lesko in the pair of joint PBA50 Southwest/ final position round match Midwest Regional events over allowed Williams to advance the weekend at Junction City to second. Schissler finished Bowl. Continued on Page 5 Just Paying Attention Wish I had more to report on the USBC Open Championships location for 2022 story, but here s what I can tell you. There still are other multiple sites and local associations under consideration to be the host city, one of which is Houston. That was confirmed in JPA earlier this year. One unknown entity is the building. The one I have proposed that may be available after upcoming renovation is the one and only NRG Astrodome. There s a chance you haven t seen the interior in a while, or at least when it was last opened to the public By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net three years ago, when the 50th anniversary of its opening was celebrated. As seen in the Houston Chronicle several weeks ago, a drone bearing a camera was launched inside the Dome, showing the progress of the ongoing cleaning and moving of materials. Those items on the current stadium floor need to be moved to prepare the installation of two levels of parking. That will raise the new stadium floor to street level, allowing more room for the public gatherings and conventions planned. Continued on Page 2 Collegiate Ticker By: Aaron Smith ARLINGTON, TX - The Lindenwood women and McKendree men, the winners at last year s season-ending Intercollegiate Team Championships, were victorious at the recent 48th Annual Midwest Collegiate Championships, claiming the first Tier 1 titles of the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season. The event was held last weekend at Bowlero in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and featured 40 men s teams and 32 women s teams. The format included six traditional games Saturday and 16 Baker games Sunday, with total pinfall determining the winner in each division. The Lindenwood women easily outdistanced the field at Bowlero as the Lions recorded a wire-to-wire victory, finishing with an 8,927 total. St. Ambrose, the 2017 Midwest Collegiate winner, finished in second place with 8,640, and Robert Morris-Illinois was third with 8,529. Along with the team victory, a pair of Lindenwood teammates finished at the top of the individual standings. Serenity Quintero led the field with a six-game total of 1,275, a average, and was followed by Haley Cummings with 1,243. Savannah College of Art and Design-Savannah s Rebekah Commane was third with 1,241, while Webber International s Caitlyn Johnson (1,222) and Grand View s Hanna Duver (1,221) rounded out the top five. On the men s side, McKendree finished Saturday s traditional block with a 1,147 game to put itself ahead by more than 130 pins, and the Bearcats continued strong Sunday in Baker competition to grab the top spot with 9,941. St. Ambrose made a huge run during Baker competition, averaging more than 227, to finish in second with 9,794, while Lincoln Memorial was third with 9,771. Robert Morris-Illinois Michael Martell fired 238 in his final game Saturday to solidify his spot at the top of the individual standings. The left-hander finished with a 1,416 total, a 236 average. Vincennes Tyler Perry was second with 1,390, and McKendree s Andrew Lazarchick was third with 1,383. Lincoln Memorial s Jorge Rodriguez (1,362) and Newman s Jake Provenzano (1,360) also earned spots on the all-tournament team. In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend: - At the Louisville Collegiate Classic in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, the Pikeville men and Martin Methodist women each edged out victories. - At the Thomas Burris Memorial Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, the Martin Methodist women completed their sweep in Kentucky, while Northwestern Ohio claimed the win in the men s division. - At the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference No. 1 in Sterling Heights, Michigan, Continued on Page 7

2 Page 2 Thursday, October 18, 2018 THE BOWLING NEWS JUST PAYING ATTENTION Continued from Page 1 The new parking area will certainly come in handy for not only the annual Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show in March (known to the locals as simply Rodeo ), but many other events next door at NRG Stadium, like Houston Texans football, college and high school football bowl games, NCAA basketball games, and possibly, just maybe, again just maybe, for five months of bowling in According to the Chronicle in its September 27 edition, the next phase of the renovation starts after final asbestos removal, which began last week. That will last for the rest of the year, concluding just before the annual Rodeo in March, when work will pause until April. (If you ve been to Rodeo or driven by the Dome and NRG Stadium on the I-610 South Loop, you ll know why. It s a little busy around there). The projected finish date at this point is February 2020 with a more detailed schedule to be known this week. PBA Tour heads down the home stretch, and attention turns to next week s FloBowling PBA Fall Swing at The Lanes at Coffee Creek in suburban Tulsa, Okla., PBA fans are learning more and more about PBA players, tournaments, JUST PAYING ATTENTION Continued from Page 2 see how much more detail is used, having a 2018 look we see in every major sport on television. The graphics will show the techy numbers, even more than what we used to see on the Brunswick BowlerVision software graphics ESPN used in the late 1980 s and the CATS system occasionally used in the early 2000 s. That software showed ball position and ball speed at 15, 30, 45, and 60 on both lanes of the television pair. Take those figures, add in location at the breakpoint, rev rates, ball speed, then add lines tracing every strike ball down the lane, and that s a bit what Kegel s Specto promises to show viewers. Can t wait to see this and hopefully Fox plans to use this on their first PBA telecast following NFL football on Sunday December 23. This may be the first step in displacing what I have named my Grandma In Galesburg theory. In this era of thirst for more technical knowledge, and the graphic displays being shown on sports telecasts, the PBA is now able to show detailed information many upper end bowlers have known for years, but haven t had a common visual source as a database. In the second half of the podcast, Clark tells how the PBA got the late Sunday spot on Fox, the format of the show, and what else we will see on the telecast. Plus, there is also a story of how a longtime Yankee fan turned into a Red Sox fan. ########### Next week, a little rundown as what Foxifying the PBA just might look like, besides hearing Hambone several times a show. viewpoints and more through PBA s new partnership with FloSports and its dedicated PBA network, FloBowling.
