1 Our 61st Year VOL. 61, NO OCTOBER 19, 2017 Ricky Schissler, Bryan Goebel Win PBA50 Regional Titles in Junction City Junction City, Kan., (October 9, 2017) Ricky Schissler from Brighton, Colo., and Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., won joint PBA50 Southwest/Midwest Regional events in a doubleheader weekend at Junction City Bowl. On Saturday, Schissler, a PBA member for over 30 years, defeated defending champion Mark Scroggins from Canyon, Texas, , to win his first PBA title. Scroggins opened in the fifth frame and then left a pocket 7-10 split in the eighth frame of the championship match, allowing Schissler to coast to the victory. On Sunday, Goebel chased David Scardaville of Houston, Texas, throughout round-robin match play finals. Scardaville was the qualifying leader and maintained the lead until the final match. Holding a 50-pin lead over Goebel going into position round, Scardaville saw his lead vanish when Goebel started with five strikes while Scardaville could not get a double. A split late in the game by Scardaville allowed Goebel to coast to a position round win and claim the win for the third time in Junction City. Goebel finished the 15-game event with an 8-0 Inside: Collegiate Ticker Page 3 Tony Reyes Award Accepting Applications Page 5 Features Just Paying Attention By Mark London Page 2 Honor Roll Page 3 Tomorrow s Stars Page 4 Lane Laughter Page 4 Live Stream Schedule Page 7 Scan with smart phone to visit our website Ricky Schissler match play record and 3,567 total pins, including match play bonus pins, while Scardaville ended with a 3,529 pinfall total. As the Professional Bowlers Association prepares for its 60th anniversary season in 2018, it would be interesting to know exactly how many bowlers have held PBA membership since its formation in But keeping track of information like that in the pre-computer era of the 50s was rather difficult, so accurate membership data from the early years isn t available. An educated guess is more than 10,000 bowlers have been PBA members at one time or another. But what the PBA did track was many of its more important statistics, like who won a title or two or 47, which gives perspective to that 10,000-plus estimate. A quick trip through some of the PBA title stats reveals some interesting trivia, such as: - As of September 1, 345 different players had won at least one PBA Tour title. - Exactly 51 players have won 10 or more titles. - Of the 345 individuals who have won PBA Tour titles, 124 (35.9%) have won one title players (15.6%) are in the group of two-time title winners who invariably said Continued on Page 7 Matt O Grady, Dick Allen Earn Return Trips to PBA Regional Challenge Matt O Grady of Matawan, N.J., representing the PBA East Region, and Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C., representing the South Region, have earned return trips to the PBA Regional Challenge in Reno where O Grady is the defending champion and Allen was runner-up in The PBA Regional and PBA50 Tour Challenge events will kick off the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, presented by Eldorado Reno Properties, at the National Bowling Stadium, on Tuesday, Nov. 7. 2 Page 2 Thursday, October 19, 2017 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention Looking back into the JPA archives as it began appearing in TBN five years ago this week, I wrote something about describing the game s almost non-existent video archives. Since that statement a few years ago, many more pieces of film and video have found their way to the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum on the bowling campus in Arlington. As Hollywood and other filmmaking communities around the world have found out, older film and video recordings don t stand the test of time very well. Improper atmospheric conditions, temperature and humidity, can deteriorate older film stock and original videotape even faster if they aren t ideal, or to use a phrase Randy Pedersen likes to tell us on ESPN if they don t match up. Since 2015, the IBHoF & Museum has had its own film/video restoration project, known as Frame4Frame. Restoring numerous sections of the 1500 films and 200,000 feet of film and video can be not only time-consuming, but also quite expensive. Older film stock and videotape may have to be physically cleaned first and then converted to a digital format, according to Jessica Bell, Museum curator. By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net BUY - SELL AMF - BRUNSWICK EQUIPMENT - COMPLETE PACKAGES WORLD S LARGEST NEW - USED SPARE PARTS INVENTORY ALL AMF BUMPER PARTS: XS QBUMP, DURABOWL AND GEN II IN STOCK Tucker Bowling Equipment Co. 609 N.E. 3rd St. Tulia, Texas Call (806) Fax (806) Depending on the quality and size of the film stock, sometimes they have to be cleaned before being transferred to digital. With moisture, heat, cold, the film stock can be temperamental that way, Bell said. Clips of the footage already digitized since the beginning of the project is shown in a short video released on YouTube this summer, found here: ( watch?v=s1ntzaar_30) It s amazing watching some of the footage in that promo video, knowing it hasn t been seen for fifty or sixty years, how well it looks after it s been cleaned and restored. We can t overestimate how important it is to get this done, Bell added. With all the footage, three separate restoration firms have bid on the project. The range is between $150,000 to $200,000 and would take anywhere between twelve to fifteen months, said Tracy Ebarb, Business Development Director of the IBHoF&M. Let s run through some of the material needing restoration. One of the oldest pieces is from the 1930 s, like the Andy Varipapa film short Strikes and Spares. Like movie previews seen at the start of feature films at your neighborhood Bowling Parts, Inc. P.O. Box 801 Tulia, Texas Call (806) daryl@tuckerbowling.com Mailing Address: P.O. Other clips date back to the 1940 s, with most of the film from the mid to late 1950 s. Videotape holds the bulk of the other footage from the early 1980 s to today. Familiar places and programs seen in the to-berestored film and videotape group are from such television shows as The Flinstones, M*A*S*H, The Ozzie and Harriet Show, The Jack Benny Show, The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show, and in several highlights mentioned here in JPA over the years, both NBC s Late Night with David Letterman, and CBS, The Late Show with David Letterman (the Mike Aulby and Dick Weber appearances). The recordings of shows into the mid 1970 s were recorded directly by pointing a film camera at a television monitor, producing a film reel known as a kinescope. Some of the familiar names in footage bowling are Presidents Nixon and Bush (41), Mary Lou Retton, Reggie Jackson. Rare footage of Walter Ray Williams, Jr, Dick Weber, Marion Ladewig, and Earl Anthony are said to be included. Bell has a hunch there may be a pleasant surprise or two amongst the yet-to-be viewed footage. Because we don t have any machines at the Museum to view the film and tape, I would not be totally surprised if there may be a rare piece or two included with the film reels, since some reels don t have any lists on what is inside the film can. We have found other reels with miscellaneous clips added to the end of a longer piece, Bell added. One major needle-in-a-haystack find in sports happened in 2009 and was highlighted here in the column. Thought to be lost was the television broadcast recording of Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. Several other early kinescopes of 1950 s World Series were discovered years before, but there had been wishes, especially from Pirate fans, myself included, about what the original broadcast looked like with Mel Allen s call of the game on NBC, ending with the historic Bill Mazeroski walk-off home run. It s still to this day the only Game 7 with a Seriesending round tripper. That needle was found by an archivist for the Bing Crosby estate eight years ago when he was looking for material for a different project in the Crosby wine cellar. He discovered four movie reel tins away from other film tins, containing the whole game from first pitch through the postgame locker room interviews in pristine condition. It was known Crosby had a kinescope of the game and watched it just once, but its whereabouts were unknown since. Crosby was an early advocate in recording all his television performances, using kinescopes when the cost of videotape recording was prohibitive. Thanks my dad s favorite crooner, the television broadcasts of one of the signature games of World Series history was saved, even producing a 2010 MLB Network special. So yes, bowling does have an extensive television and movie history and it does need to be saved, not only for us who witnessed some of it as it occurred, but also for others who would like to enjoy it years from now as well. I would not be surprised if there is more great footage not yet known, especially with PBA Ronnie Sloan turned in the top score of the week at Cowtown Bowling Palace with a power-packed = 790 Ebonite Classic Trio league production. EVER WONDER Continued from Page 1 the second title proved the first one wasn t just luck. - We didn t ask them, but the 36 players who have won three PBA Tour titles would likely agree with the two-time winners. - So that begs the question, how precious do you think PBA titles are to the 132 players who have won four or more titles? - A lot of bowling experts thought Earl Anthony s record of 41 PBA Tour titles (later upgraded to 43 when his two USBC Masters titles were recognized) was untouchable. So do you think Walter Ray Williams Jr. s record 47 titles will ever be broken? - 100% of all PBA title winners will tell you that you can t win a title simply by luck, regardless of how many players were in the field or how many games you had to bowl. - Beyond the PBA Tour, thousands of PBA members also have participated in the PBA Regional program since the inaugural National Resident Pro Championship in Over the years 573 different players have won at least one PBA Regional title and as of September 25, the PBA has awarded a grand total of 6,318 titles in regional competition. Scientifically speaking, that s a lot of regional titles. PBA history is filled with enlightening firsts and unusual feats. For example, did you know Roy Lown of Baltimore was not only the first left-hander to win a PBA Tour title (his only Tour title), but he won it in the first televised PBA Tour finals, the 1961 PBA National Invitational in Paramus, N.J. It wasn t national television, but it WAS televised. And that s how legends and legacies begin with stats and figures and notes about unique accomplishments. As the PBA prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary, it remains true that every PBA Tour title has been precious, the ultimate prize in a bowler s life, and every title has a story behind it. In 2018, the PBA is going to re-live a lot of those precious memories through a special 60 Most Memorable Moments in PBA History review. Watch for it.
