1 Our 62nd Year VOL. 63, NO DECEMBER 13, 2018 Italy Makes History with Team Gold Medal at 2018 World Men s Championships By: Matt Cannizzaro HONG KONG - Prior to the 2018 World Bowling Men s Championships, Italy only had made one previous appearance on the event s medal stand, and that was nearly 50 years ago. In Baker competition, each team member bowls two frames of each game. The leadoff bowler bowls the first and sixth frames, the second bowler takes the second and seventh frames and so on. 2 Page 2 Thursday, December 13, 2018 THE BOWLING NEWS Just Paying Attention Sorry about the false alarm, but next week s TBN will be the last before the annual two-week Christmas break. As usual, JPA will be a little bit different. In years past for example, you ve read about Robert Lawrence s nationallytelevised 299 game and 815 series, the true back story of a radio playlist staple at this time of year, and last year, a chat with a Vince Lombardi-era Green Bay Packer on his role on the 50th anniversary of one of the iconic games in NFL history. Next week s JPA will be a little different, I guarantee it. ######## In a recent Facebook post, a photograph showed the progress of the extensive remodel of the entertainment complex at the site of what used to be Palace Bowling Lanes in Houston. The new Southside Commons, part family entertainment area and part office complex, is BUY - SELL AMF - BRUNSWICK EQUIPMENT - COMPLETE PACKAGES WORLD S LARGEST NEW - USED SPARE PARTS INVENTORY ALL AMF BUMPER PARTS: XS QBUMP, DURABOWL AND GEN II IN STOCK Tucker Bowling Equipment Co. 609 N.E. 3rd St. Tulia, Texas Call (806) Fax (806) By Mark London Mark@TheBowlingNews.net using a portion of the existing building shell and two-story office area. According to a recent Houston Chronicle story, the complex will have entertainment, retail, and restaurant space on the ground floor. Office and medical space will be on the second floor. According to the developer, Triple Crown Investments, 70 percent of the space has been leased by a yet-to-be named family entertainment center. And yes, bowling will be part of the entertainment space, although nothing close to what Palace Lanes was with its 44 lanes. It will be much smaller, most likely in the single digits. To those who used to travel to bowl The Luci in the last ten to fifteen years when Palace Lanes was host, you would not recognize the neighborhood along Bellaire Boulevard inside West I-610 Loop since Bowling Parts, Inc. P.O. Box 801 Tulia, Texas Call (806) daryl@tuckerbowling.com redevelopment began several years ago. The old Palace Lanes building isn t recognizable with three of the outside walls remaining. The structure is getting a new front wall facing the street as well as a new roof. Remodeling is scheduled to be completed this summer. ###### One of the more unique live bowling radio shows returns next month, well at least, since the demise of The Bowlers Show last year and the betterthan-average JPA segment. The Spare Time Radio Show on Milwaukee s WSSP The Fan FM/ 1250 AM with hosts Steve Sparky Fifer and local pro shop owner Dwight Albrecht returns Sunday January 6 at its regular time slot at 9:00 am to 10:00 am Central. Sparky has many of the high-profile names in the biz calling in or occasionally stopping live in-studio and offers his views on just about everyone in the industry. Fifer usually goes a little deeper into detail on different topics, much like other sports talk radio shows. He may talk the marketing impact of the Macy s Thanksgiving Day parade floats, what Fox Sports does with the look and presentation of PBA telecasts, as well as what happened on the prior week s show. He s also had PBA Commissioner Tom Clark in studio on occasion and doesn t mind asking the tough questions. A longtime bowler himself, Fifer does care about the game and the sport that is woven into the culture of Wisconsin. Just type in WSSP at radio.com and listen for yourself. ###### In an update of a JPA item from last week, the online auction of the building housing Beaver Valley Bowl, host to numerous bowling scenes in the feature film Kingpin, has been completed. From Monday to Wednesday last week, bidding on the building on the shore of the Ohio River northwest of Pittsburgh, with a starting bid of $150,000. An amount seen near the end of the auction was a bid of $200,000. According to the Beaver County Times, the current building owners had quietly put the building up for auction, whose only tenants were the bowl and performance space for a comedy troupe. Calls requesting comment from Beaver Valley Bowl management were not returned by press time. ###### Here s another update, this one on a story appearing in an upcoming Bowlers Journal International. One of the persons profiled in that story, and as JPA had profiled last fall, Bethune-Cookman University women s bowling coach Chelsea Gilliam, gave me an update on her continuing Continued on Page The Bowling News Mailing Address: P.O. Gilliam and Motiv regional equipment staffer Daron Hanson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota told me their stories currently dealing and managing unique personal health issues on and off the lanes The 28-year-old coach, who helped the University of Pikeville win the NAIA National Championship as a bowler, said there have been changes to her skin and tumors in her chest, necessitating a medication adjustment. This also means more surgery followed by six weeks of radiation. Another spot seen from a cat scan of her spine last fall appears to be responding to current medication. ###### Following up on another JPA item several weeks ago, creators of the feature film When Jeff Tried To Save The World, about the potential closing of a small bowling center, were looking for distribution outlets. The Hollywood Reporter recently ran an item Scan with smart phone to visit the SASBA website. announcing the film is now available on various video-ondemand (VOD) platforms. The new two-minute trailer is here: ( watch?v=opjeq1dwpdy). ##### As our little corner of the world and the sports-viewing public patiently await what Fox Television has in store for the PBA to make it a little more glamorous, or at least as we remember it in the 1970 s and 80 s, Maxim magazine (yes, THAT Maxim magazine) rolled out a look at six very unique settings for a pair or two of lanes. As the accompanying photos show you, the décor is not your usual Brunswick or AMF settee and concourse furniture. Among the leather couches and glass tables, food is prepared by a personal gourmet chef, and add in a seemingly endless choice of local microbrew and craft beers, all surrounded by wall-mounted televisions with every sports channel as far as the eye can see or want. 5 THE BOWLING NEWS Thursday, December 13, 2018 Page 5 ITALY MAKES HISTORY Continued from Page 1 at the 1971 tournament in Milwaukee. This year s roster included Marco Reviglio, Pierpaolo De Filippi, Erik Davolio, Nicola Pongolini, anchor Antonino Fiorentino and Marco Parapini. This is a dream come true, Fiorentino said. We live and bowl for these moments, and it s so incredible. We bowled against two of the best teams in the world. After finishing 22nd last year in Las Vegas, we put in a lot of work to be ready for this year. The lanes were tough tonight, but we managed to keep ourselves calm. We made good shots and left easy spares. This means so much to our country. Entering this year s event, Fiorentino recognized the Team USA squad as a dream team - one of the strongest groups the United States has fielded, if not the best. This year s team included recently named Chris Schenkel PBA Player of the Year Andrew Anderson, Chris Barnes, Jakob Butturff, Tommy Jones, EJ Tackett and Kyle Troup. Team USA has finished among the top two in the World Championships team event nine consecutive times, including gold medals in 2006, 2008, 2010 and Additional wins came in 1963 and Jones and Barnes have been part of each performance since 2008 and were joined at the top of the medal stand last year in Las Vegas by Butturff, who was making his World Championships debut. This year, Anderson, Tackett and Troup all were first-time participants. Two missed spares, a 2-8 combination and a 6-10, in the opening game against Italy halted any momentum Team USA had after easing past Singapore in the night s first semifinal. Despite the mistakes, though, Jones had a chance to shut out Italy with a double and seven pins in the 10th frame, but a split on his first offering handed the game to the Italians. Italy started the second game with a double and five consecutive spares to pull away. The gold medalists solidified their spot among the top four after six games of qualifying by closing with a 1,044 game, which put them two pins ahead of fourth-seeded Singapore and 19 pins ahead of Indonesia, the first team out of the cut. Italy earned its meeting with Team USA by defeating Canada in the Tuesday s second semifinal, 2-1 ( , , ). In the first semifinal, Team USA struck 14 times and defeated Singapore, 2-0 ( and ). Singapore threw only two doubles in the match, and both came in the 10th frame. Canada and Singapore each received bronze medals, marking the first time either had medaled in the five-player event at the World Championships. The silver medal was the seventh for the United States at the World Championships.
