PBA Tour schedule with four consecutive Sunday telecasts, including the PBA League Elias Cup finals on Sunday, May 13, at 1 p.m. EDT. Leading the eight-team pack into the fast-paced sixth season of PBA League competition will be player-manager Norm Duke s Dallas Strikers, in search of their third consecutive Elias Cup. Chasing the Strikers again will be the hometown Portland Lumberjacks, managed by Tim Mack; the Silver Lake Atom Splitters, managed by Mark Baker; the Philadelphia Hitmen, managed by Jason Couch; L.A. X, managed by Andrew Cain; the New York City WTT KingPins, managed by Carolyn Dorin- Ballard; the Motown Muscle, managed by Del Ballard, and the Brooklyn Styles, managed by Johnny Petraglia. In keeping with tradition, the PBA League will officially get underway with team managers announcing the names of three players from their 2017 rosters who they want to protect when the annual player draft is held. On January 7 Duke and Mack (Dallas and Portland) will name three players from their 2017 rosters they want to retain for the new season. On January 14, Baker Charles McLean Wins Annual SASBA Championship in Ft Worth FORT WORTH, TX Charles McLean qualified 11th in the match play qualifying format of the Annual Championship at Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth Saturday, September 24. McLean received a bye for being one of the top 24 qualifiers. Then in the 2-game total pin matchplay finals he won 5 straight matches. Charles beat Steve Wright ( ), John Shuffler ( ), Terry Williams ( ), Mike McHugh ( ) before defeating David Scardaville ( ) for the title and $1,300. It was his first SASBA title! David qualified 28th on Saturday, so he did not receive a bye. Scardaville defeated Ron Leverich ( ), Willie Wells ( ), Cliff Barnes ( ), Bubba Haney ( ), and Don Richey ( ) before losing to Charles and collected $1,000 for his second place finish. Richey and McHugh and Couch (Silver Lake and Philadelphia) will announced their three protected players. Cain and Dorin-Ballard (L.A. and New York City) will select their three protected players by no later than January 21, and Ballard and Petraglia (Motown and Brooklyn) will have until January 28 to name their three protected players. All eight teams will then round out their five-player rosters in the PBA League Draft which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Indianapolis, site of the Go Bowling! PBA 60th Anniversary Classic, at Woodland Bowl. The draft will be live streamed on PBA s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame, with teams picking in reverse order of how they finished in That means Brooklyn will select first in both rounds followed by Motown, New York City, L.A., Philadelphia, Silver Lake, Portland and Dallas. Of note, the 2018 draft will not use the serpentine order used in previous years. There also will be a change in eligibility rules for players wanting to enter the 2018 draft pool. 2 Page 2 Thursday, October 5, 2017 THE BOWLING NEWS Random Thoughts Last weekend, I bowled the Swiss Trio tournament in Wichita. It s always a great time with great people. The last two years, I bowled with Derek Hartnell and Wes Malott. Bowling with Wes is such a unique experience in so many ways. FOUNDED AND PUBLISHED BY JOE GENNARO FROM to get a wry smile out of Wes while we re competing is one of my simple pleasures in life. And that weekend he really needed it. Now in the case of this tournament, Wes bowled really well. He averaged about 225, but finished around 6th or 7th in average. From watching him bowl, it felt like he completely dominated the lanes for what was out there, but the scores said different. It got me thinking. I don t bowl that often outside of DFW anymore, so I am pretty conditioned to the talent level of this area. Bowling that tournament, I got to see a lot of younger talent, and specifically the young talent that bowls at Wichita State and Newman University. Kids like Wesley Low, I hadn t seen him in person yet, Nick Pate who has been winning everything all over the country, Mr. Action, Kamron Doyle, and of course Kris Prather, who just so happened to average 249 for the 12 games. There is some really good, really strong, young talent out there just not much of it here in Texas. A few weeks back I had talked about the lack of young female talent in DFW and Texas, but I completely over-looked the men. I think, because we have some young stars in 20-yr-old Anthony Simonsen and Anthony and Sean Lavery-Spahr, that the men s side is ok but it s not. There is a real lack of young male Texas bowling talent. I started to look around at all of the tournaments that I participate in, or least keep an eye on, and you won t find many stars or up and coming stars under the age of 30. Geoffrey Young is 27 and just won the Longview Doubles with Will Barnes of Austin who turns 30 this week. That s just about as young as they get these days. It s really shocking because I had been under the impression that we have a great pipeline of talent just ready to break onto the scene, but I m not so sure about that now. In certain parts of the country I think there is great young talent; Wichita for certain has it, but that may be because the kids are transplanting themselves there for the great SASBA Continued from Page 1 gracious hosts. Cityview added $2,250 to the prize fund. Our next tournament is at Cowtown for the Regular Trio. Oct we are in Houston at Del Mar Lanes for a Regular Singles. bowling programs. Either way, it was a real eye opener for me. I want there to be a lot of bowling challenges out there for the young generation, so that they are hungry to improve and hungry to be challenged. In DFW, we are very fortunate that there are a lot of things to bowl, the problem is almost no one under 27 is bowling in them. I hope that changes in the near future, but I m not sure where the next five studs are, and when they will appear. And speaking of young talent let s check in with Simonsen and his nine months of extreme travel. For the year, so far he has travelled a smidge over 60,000 miles, and those are just air miles. He has also spent a little over 100 nights in a hotel or about 40% of his time. He is truly burning up the pavement and the lanes. Next month, we will talk with him about the challenges on the mind and body of earning a living in so many different time zones Lebanon Road, Frisco, TX Strikz Entertainment Center is looking for a PINCHASER Flexible scheduling, Pinsetter experience is required, training on our equipment will be provided. It s not that bowling is further down the list, but other activities have in some ways caught up. The days when centers marketed themselves and got their name exposed to the public, was to simply unlock the doors, seems even further away than ever before. Consumers have many more choices on where and how to spend their dollars, and are much more aggressively marketed. Other marketing specialists I spoke with who did not want to be quoted in the column said bowling is not alone in its struggles to find a new audience, as one put it. Some of the basic points that did come out again was showing the consumer value for their dollar, providing a clean environment, and nowadays, giving them something in return, other than a good time. That s why we see customer rewards programs everywhere. I want to thank those professional marketers who took time to respond to my questions and comments, and look forward to what could very well be a periodic update of this rapidly changing industry. ############ Finally this week, I can explain those two seconds on CBS-TV last Monday night. Yes, it was just two. And no, it was not a leftover aberration from the recent solar eclipse. And no, it wasn t the type of two seconds Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson shared with the world on a Super Bowl halftime show a few years ago. As my regular readers remember, television sitcom creator, producer, and writer Chuck Lorre (Grace Under Fire, Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory), along with his head writer and co-executive producer Steve Molaro, and a Warner Brothers publicist (Hollywood studio where Big Bang is recorded), stopped by Emerald Bowl last December to scout possible shooting sites for a Big Bang spinoff, whose pilot episode was shown last Monday, called Young Sheldon. As you may have noticed, or as your BBT nerd fans stop the DVR at the very end of the show to read a Lorre trademark, what he calls a vanity card inserted at the end of every Chuck Lorre-produced program. It s only seen for two seconds, but it usually contains something thought provoking and funny. Last Monday s Chuck Lorre Productions vanity card #562, seen here: (chucklorre.com/ index-ys.php?p-562) thanked numerous people he visited on his trip to Houston last winter. A total of twenty-three people were listed. I was lucky to be one of them. Some of you who stopped in during the team portion of this year s Texas State USBC recall my story about the director s chair sitting behind the main pro shop counter. I explained briefly on how the chair got there. Now, here are other details I couldn t reveal until now. As Emerald Bowl owner Don Ellis, Jr., Emerald GM Steve Hofer, Lorre, and Molaro explained that day, they were searching for a 1980 s-looking bowling center for exterior and interior camera shots for a spinoff series, featuring a childhood version of BBT character Dr. Sheldon Cooper. Cooper has been seen over the years, although not recently, at a local center proving his bowling skill is almost up there with his intellect, or at least, trying to prove it as such. Favorite Bowler: Carolyn Dorin Ballard, I appreciate everything she has done for me. Why did you apply for the NCTUSBC board: Once I started helping with the NCTUSBC tournaments, it really helped me understand the business and the importance of the association. It allowed me to make so many new connections. I love meeting new people and I really feel like this position was meant for me. My goal is to get more youth involved in the programs and I want to help more kids get into the Junior Gold event next year since it is here in Dallas/Ft Worth. Favorite bowling accomplishment: Winning the Jenna Kay tournament last year, the U20 handicap division. How was your Junior Gold experience: It was the most stressful week of my life. You are competing against the best kids in this amazing country. All of the hard work you have put into the game your whole life is on display for everyone to see, it really is the future of the sport. What are your plans for college: I will be attending Ottawa University in Kansas. I received a partial scholarship to bowl for them and I want to major in elementary education Dallas Pkwy #150, Dallas, TX p:
