Holdfast Bay Bowls & Croquet Club Inc Club Newsletter April 2013 Another season over but where did it go?! Heat and wet weather took it s toll resulting in probably one of the shortest seasons on record! In total we lost 3 Wednesday, 3 Thursday and 3 Sat pennant days. Even some of the replay days were cancelled! Not only were members deprived of the opportunity of playing their full quota of matches, but the club also experienced significant financial losses due to the reduced playing days. However despite this there were some notable on the green success stories during the season -: * Sat Premier 1 side held it s position in the top echelon after nail biting end to the season. * Thursday Premier 1 won Pennant for second year in a row * Sat Metro 1 avoided relegation * Wed Premier 2 S competed in finals * Sat Division 4 West won Pennant. (Division 4 S narrowly missed pennant too) * Night Owls on Tuesdays continues to grow * Sunday Barefoot bowls gaining momentum So, congratulations to all players, selectors, volunteers and organisers

Page 2 From the President With the season behind us, it is indeed always a time for reflection. The majority of us feel disappointed in our efforts on the greens, and we had hoped for more success than we had. However, there were in my opinion enough positives to come out of the bowls season to give us encouragement and hope for the future. I believe we are truly fighters to the end. Congratulations must go to our Metro Division 4 West side, who won our only pennant on a Saturday, this is never easy for sides who have many forced changes to the team. We as a club know the importance of having a side in Premier One, so it was extremely pleasing to be able to retain that position. We seemed to grow in confidence as the season went on and the feeling among the group was one of belief that we could stay in Premier One. Equally important was the retention of our Metro 1 West side, had this team been relegated to the next division, this would have been disastrous to the club, so well done. Congratulations to the Ladies Premier One side on winning the pennant final in a close fought 4 shot win. An amazing effort, similar to last season when we came from 4 th position to win the final. This year, finishing 3 rd and once again victorious. Back to back a wonderful achievement and one that was well celebrated. Also a determined effort by our ladies in Premier 2, with a real battle to the very last game, this was also so important to the club to retain our position fielding a team in this division. Congratulations to our Wednesday Premier 2 South team on making it to the finals. I feel we have achieved, this shows with determination anything is possible, we just need to start this process from the start of the season. To the members who were not members of any of the above teams, thank you for your efforts we are all contributors, and best of all we are healthy enough to be able to play the sport we love. Finally I urge as many members as possible to patronise our social bowls in the off season held on a Wednesday and Saturday, it is so important for the club to have our greens and club utilised over the winter months, the intention is to have fortnightly dinners through the winter on Friday nights and of course the fortnightly jackpot draw is climbing to a considerable amount of money to win. For those of you who I may not have the opportunity to see in the coming weeks, due to many of you travelling, stay safe and healthy during the winter. Sandy Wallace Back To Back Pennants! Photo courtesy of Bowls SA Well done girls! A message of thanks. Please accept my grateful thanks for all the members of the HBBCC who have congratulated me either personally, by telephone, letters, flowers, gifts, lunches and dinners on the occasion of me receiving the Order of Australia Medal. As the number has reached 389 and growing, I have no hope of writing to you all!! So, please know that every contact has been so special to me. Go Holdfast always! Shirley Sampson OAM

Page 3 KEVEN LEWIS RETIRES After 25 years of service as our Greenkeeper, Kevin Lewis will retire at the end of June. His reputation across the sport during this time has been one of absolute professionalism and dedication to his craft. There have been many special occasions when his immaculate green presentation has been in evidence over the years such as the National Sides competitions and the World titles with the most recent being in in At all these major events he has presented the players with great playing surfaces on which to compete, receiving the plaudits of players and officials alike. These, of course, have been the high profile events but the club also acknowledges and thanks Kevin for maintaining our greens and general greens areas in top condition for pennant days and the many club and other tournaments that have occurred over 25 years. Of course Kevin would the first one to acknowledge the support he has received from a range of volunteers over the period who, under his management, have assisted in the maintenance of our greens over such a long period. As well as his greens responsibilities, Kevin has also performed consistently in our top pennant bowls teams. Kevin was born at the Hindmarsh Hospital. His Father and his 2 brothers owned a 36 acre market garden on Holbrooks Road at Underdale. He completed his education at Flinders Park Primary School and then Urrbrae High School leaving school at 15 to work in the family market garden. They were the largest celery growers in Australia supplying the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane markets. They also grew glass house tomatoes. Unfortunately in the late seventies the government acquired the family property to build the Torrens Teachers College. It was a distressing time for the Lewis family as the compensation they received for the forced acquisition was a disgrace. Kevin was out of a job at 24 and decided to join a mate to travel and see the world which included a hitch hike from Cape Town through Africa to Nairobi the capital of Kenya. They stayed for a month with a mate who worked in the Australian High Commission before continuing their travels from Africa to London where Kevin had 3 wonderful English summers playing league and minor county cricket. During these three summers he was employed at Dulwich Sports Club doing cricket pitches and lawn tennis courts. Returning to Adelaide he ultimately ended up employed as the curator at Thebarton Oval doing cricket pitches and oval maintenance. Kevin played A grade cricket for West Torrens and was vice captain to his best mate the late David Hookes. He played 3 state games in the cricket seasons with South Australia winning the shield that year. Kevin was a very good district spin bowler but not quite good enough to have a career as a state cricketer and it was then that Les Burdett talked him into going to the Adelaide Oval. Things didn t work out as Les said and after two summers he applied for the Greenkeeper position at Holdfast Bay. Following an interview with Tom Knight and Ron Rudiger he was offered the position and started work on May The greens were in relatively poor condition initially but a full renovation of each green after two years meant he was able to get the greens to a higher standard. Kevin said recently I have been so lucky to have a job that I have loved for the past 25 years and I am proud of the standard of our greens. Over the years there have been some of Australia s biggest events held at Holdfast Bay during my time and I have always taken pride in the greens that have been presented for such events. Holdfast has been very good to me over my 25 years and I will miss not coming to work. Max, you have inherited four top greens and hopefully you will keep them at the standard required.!! It is fitting that the club have honoured Kevin by naming one of our front Greens The Kevin Lewis Green Well done Kevin, you will be missed by all. May your forthcoming caravan trip be safe, enjoyable and relaxing and, of course, we look forward to seeing you next pennant season

Page 4 From the office of the Secretary / Manager The Annual General meeting will be held on the 18 th May 2014 and notices will be published to members in early April. Early indications are that the Club s finances will be significantly improved from last year although there is still much work to be done. This result was achieved because of a lot of hard work by many people in the Club and it is a credit to them that this progress has been made - and this is despite the fact that I estimate the Club lost between $10000 to $15000 in revenue during the Pennant season due to inclement weather. The year 2014/2015 will consolidate on that result and it is my belief that all that hard work will mean the Club will be stronger than in the previous years of tight financial positions. Full details will be provided to the members at the AGM. The playing season would have to be classified as successful with the women winning the Premier 1 Grand Final and the Wednesday Metro 4 W side achieving a Pennant. The Presentation Night is to be held on the 11 th April and all successful players in the Club Championships, Pennants and also the Volunteers of the Year will be recognised. About two months ago several members met as part of a Futures Planning Committee and they discussed the future prospects of the Club resulting in several recommendations being provided to the Management Committee for considerations. Some of those recommendations have been acted upon and details will be explained to the members at the AGM. Many thanks to Colin Turci, Heather Cowden-Tonkes, Allen Wilson, Gil Kolenberg, Mary Lemm and Ian Major for taking part in these discussions. This is the last edition of the Club Newsletter before many members travel north and many will not be able to attend the AGM-to them I extend wishes for safe travelling and to come back fully refreshed for an exciting season 2014/2015. John McDougall OAM Secretary/Treasurer. From the Club Coach - Kane Coulls Congratulations go out to Sandy, John, all Committee members and most importantly every Member of OUR wonderful Club. Once again OUR wonderful Club has performed well on the green and won 2 Pennants and maintained OUR position within the Premier 1 Division of Saturday Pennants. Firstly, congratulations to OUR Ladies Premier 1 Team for going Back to Back & winning the Thursday Premier 1 Title 2 years in a row, what an amazing achievement & something everyone involved should be extremely proud of. Secondly, Congratulations to OUR Metro 4W Team in winning their Saturday pennant and gaining promotion to Metro 3, a big step forward for the continuing development of OUR Club. And last but not least, Congratulations to OUR Saturday Premier 1 Team for growing in both confidence & stature during the course of the season & performing at a level that not only ensured OUR Club stayed in the Premier 1 Saturday competition but has built a foundation that will ensure more success for the coming season & years ahead. As a Club WE need to continue our development on the green to maintain & build the respect of rival clubs and give bowlers a reason to want to join OUR great Club. Pre-season training will commence mid August to help prepare ourselves for the season ahead with training and Trial dates to be listed within the Club in the coming months. Season 2014/2015 is going to be bigger and better for OUR Club and I look forward to sharing more success with all of our members at all levels within OUR Club during the next 12 months. and remember, good weight & a good line = Great Bowling Go Holdy Pennant Results 2013/14 Sourced from Bowls SA website Sat Wed Thurs Premier 1 8/10 Metro 1W 8/10 Metro 2W 10/10 Metro 4 W PREMIERS Metro 4 S 3/10 Metro 5 SW 5/10 Premier 2 S 4/10 Metro 1 W 7/10 Metro 2 W 4/10 Metro 3 W 6/10 Premier 1 PREMIERS Premier 2 S 8/10 Metro 2 S 8/11

Holdfast Classic - another great event! The Holdfast Classic continues to grow in stature with another highly successful event being held on the 12th April. In perfect conditions (bit chilly early) with three immaculate greens full of enthusiastic bowlers, the club again demonstrated it s ability to stage what is a very professional tournament. Full marks must go to Kane Coulls and his helpers for staging this event. As always the ladies provided a magnificent lunch - thanks to you all. Congratulations to overall winners from Lockleys Third place to team from Holdfast Second place to team from Somerton The club gratefully acknowledges the support of our sponsors McGrath Real Estate and Aerobowls in the staging of this major event. Pictured - Paul McGrath presented the prizes to all winners on the day. Thanks Paul Holdfast Rocks n Rolls! A very successful Rock n Roll night was held on the 22nd March when some 160 rockers rocked till after midnight. Robert and Colleen Barclay are to be congratulated for organising the event and to other members who assisted. After so much hard work Robert unfortunately had to miss the fun! Further similar events are planned. Well done! Croquet Come n Try! The Croquet club held two very successful Come n Try Golf Croquet sessions during Feb. Members distributed 1600 flyers to designated areas prior to these events. A further 1400 flyers have been mail dropped around the local area for additional Come n Try sessions in Mar/April SPONSORS VISIT THE CLUB It was good to see our valued sponsors attend the Sponsors and Volunteers Night on the 14th March. A special mention must be made of the meal prepared by our members - great! Some of Sponsors and a few of our smiling members! The Kitchen Volunteers
