Oxnard-Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club, 350 North C Street, Oxnard, CA Fall 2016 President s Message by Amador Martinez I want to take this moment to thank all of you for your outstanding support in helping me achieve and complete important tasks undertaken during the past two years. I especially want to thank the Board of Directors for their support evaluating the numerous issues brought before them. This administration has been instrumental in; increasing membership by over 50%, an increase of this magnitude unknown to this club s past history, club s financial status remains stable and our expenses are sustainable, Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Oxnard and our club was finalized providing our club with extended opportunities and the purchase of Liability insurance for all our members age 18 years of age and older. Sadly, we lost one of our longtime members, Armand Escalante. For several years I ve known of a problem I had with heart valve leakage. During this waiting period the only repair solution was open heart surgery. Having gone once through an open heart surgery I had no desire to go through it again. At the onset of the valve leakage, symptoms were insignificant, however as time went on I started to quickly run out of energy. Recently my cardiologist informed me of a new procedure for replacement of a defective heart valve called, Trans-Catheter Valve Replacement. I immediately started investigating this option by contacting Cedar Sinai. This quarter started with a BANG. On July 28, 2016 I had my long awaited Trans-Catheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). The procedure was performed by Advanced Heart Institute Health Sciences Center, Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles. The procedure as described by Dr. Raj Makkar, primary surgeon, want textbook style. Recovery time is much shorter then open heart surgery and less PAINFUL. Irrigation; Management: Southern California lawn bowling greens are managed by non-paid volunteers whose responsibilities are turf maintenance. However, in many cases he/she spend most of their time doing what the membership and/ or Association s and/ or Governments are telling them how to maintain a lawn bowling green while they know nothing about how the game is played. All these people are concerned primarily with greens appearance and not its primary function. The Greens-Keeper should be allowed to follow standard operating procedures as outlined in the Green s Maintenance Manuel. Oxnard LBC has a published Maintenance Manuel listed on its Website ( Irrigation management is a key factor in proper maintenance of the green and to sustain a healthy turf. When proper irrigation is under control several good things happen: 1. Localized Dry Patch (LDP) are minimized, 2. A healthy root system is developed and 3. The grass will better support heavy foot traffic as well as machine traffic. The Oxnard LBC green is deeply watered once per-week unless the temperature stays in the 90 s degrees or higher for extended periods of time then it will be watered twice a week. The green is healthy and it can sustain foot and machine traffic without notable stress. Class is in Session by Armand Escalante Reprint from Winter 2003 Newsletter Hints for Better Bowling Lawn bowlers are reminded that potential members of our club who show any degree of interest are always welcome, so please encourage your friends and acquaintances to come and see if lawn bowling is for them. Also, please remember that if you feel that you need a "brush up" on fundamentals or training for more advanced levels of play, our club has available several qualified instructors who: will gladly try to help you improve. Since I mentioned "improvement", yours truly offers these hints that hopefully will lead to better bowling. LEADS: After each of your delivered bowls stay a few seconds on the mat and watch for a signal from your skip who may be indicating how far your bowl stopped from the jack. This will allow you to make adjustments for your next bowl. After this, exit the mat to your right. (I realize that I am asking you to bend an unenforceable rule of the game by staying on the mat for a few seconds after your bowl has come to rest.) VICES: Remember not to approach the head or even move when one of your opponents has control of the mat and rink. To do so is described as "interference" in the book of rules. SKIPS: Remember not to berate or, otherwise disparage or discourage your team mates. Yelled comments like "You're too wide", "You're too short", "You're too narrow," etc. etc. serve no purpose since these facts should be obvious to the player who just delivered the lousy shot.
Changes on the Club Board of Directors On July 8th Ron Zenone was appointed as Acting vice President in the absence of Armand Escalante who had been off ill. Armand's condition continued to decline and on July 17 Armand passed away. On August 12th at the Monthly Board Meeting Ron Zenone was appointed as permanent Vice President. With a vacancy existing on the Board, Ron Dawson was approached to see if he would be willing to serve on the Board. As he was willing, the Board voted by to select him as a Board replacement. On August 15th our past President Dave Jones gave Ron Dawson the Oath of Office before the club membership whereby swearing him in officially making him a Board Member. The Club Board of Directors consists of four Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) and five Directors at large. The Board of Directors have the authority to appoint replacements for the unexpired term of any vacancy on the Board. Judy Patrizzi Pairs Tournament the bowling gene, which makes his son so successful at this game? Art Roberts, who lives in Camarillo, has been a novice less than 2 months. His son Scott will represent Team USA at the World Bowls Championship this December in Christchurch, New Zealand. Mike Newton and Gloria Brown of the Oxnard LBC also competed and finished with 2 wins and 2 losses. The Roberts defeated Newton and Brown in the first game of the day 9-6,on their way to a perfect 4-0 record, the only unbeaten team in the event. Article by Mike Newton and Gloria Brown Skips, Vices and Leads, "Oh My"! On Saturday, September 24, 2016 the annual Marcellus L. Joslyn Memorial Triples Tournament took place at Holmby Park Lawn Bowls club. This was a mixed triples tournament format. There were about thirty two teams from Southern California that participated. Our club sent two teams, Team #1: Dennis Ryan, Demo Arevalo and Sandra Adame, Team #2" Ron Zenone, Peter Westray and Doris Sneddon. Linda Westray came along to cheer us on. Team #1 won one of their three games while Team #2 won two of their three games. It was a long, HOT day but a fun time was had by all. The food was delicious and the company even better. On a personal note-- thanks for the opportunity to bowl with such fine bowlers. I've only been bowling for eight months but I always welcome the opportunity for growth. The friends I've made along the way are a plus! We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing. George Bernard Shaw So let's continue to play! by Sandra Adame Art and Scott Roberts On September 3, 2016, the Judy Patrizzi 3 Bowl Pairs Tournament took place at MacKenzie Park Lawn Bowls Club in Santa Barbara. Twenty four teams played four,10 end games for $370 in prize money. The winning team was the father and son team of Art Roberts of Oxnard LBC, and Scott Roberts (Laguna Beach LBC). This story is amazing in two ways. First, Art is a new bowler, Second, he arrived at the tournament without any bowls. Scott, his son, planned on buying his dad a set of Aero Bowls for his birthday, at the tournament. Art picked out size 4 Aero Bowl Profile with the dentations grip. Art used them in the tournament, having only fifteen minutes of practice, prior to the start. Truly amazing! Could Art have Vice Training Seminar On August 11, 2016 Bob Smith presented a training class in the clubhouse for ten of the clubs newer members in the many aspects of playing the position of vice. The training became necessary because of our success in getting new members from our Open House we found ourselves with lots of leads and short on trained vices. We spent about 1 1/2 hours in the class room discussing such things as rules, bowling etiquette and measuring for points. There was good participation with lots of questions asked and everyone went away with a greater understanding of what is needed to play the position. The members that attended were Linda Lockhart, Ken Roth, Geoff Simpson, Peter Westray, Sandra Adame, Mark Wilson, Dee Press, Ron and Joan Dawson and Pam Williams. Our veteran members Jordan Austin and Raul Perez were also there to share their experiences with us. Rollin Along 2 Fall 2016
At the conclusion of the class we held a drawing for a measuring tape that used to belong to Armand Escalante. It was felt that the owner of the tape would have good bowling days. The winner was Joan Dawson, but since she already had her own tape she gave it to Pam Williams. Since there were several that missed the training we'll try to pick them up in another session before too long. Oxnard Holds Afternoon Open House Our new member Ron Dawson organized an Open House on Friday, October 7th at the Club. It was held between 3:30 and 6:30 in the afternoon. This was to introduce new people to the sport of lawn bowling. It was advertised on the web and in the VC Star and offered pizza, soft drinks and an opportunity to roll a few bowls. We had twelve show up and it looked like everyone had a good time. Several showed interest in lessons and some have already started. at our Monthly General meeting at the club and our President, Amador Martinez drew the names as our members looked on. AND GUESS WHAT, your names were the names that were picked. CONGRATULATIONS! The winners were Eileen Lederer and Gerry Beane. This Quarter s Club Events Aug 26, Men s Pairs Tournament, there were twelve members participating and teams were luck of the draw. 1st: Mike Newton, Bob Smith 3W+22 2nd: Rich Purcell, Demo Arevalo 3W+13 3rd: Jim Matlock, Jerry Heidebrecht 1W-7 The other teams in no particular order are: Denny Ryan- Peter Westray, Jordan Austin-Mark Wilson, Wuhwa Hsu- Ron Dawson. Joe Brown (L) explains how to roll the bowl. Bob Smith and Mike Newton Sept 19, Visitation, Santa Barbara at Oxnard, Santa Barbara LBC came with 12 bowlers ready to bowl. Oxnard LBC had a good turnout and the four teams from Oxnard were a good match as Oxnard won 3 games. Our extra bowlers were formed into 4 setup teams so all our bowlers were able to bowl. The weather was great, warm but not much sun because of high cloudiness. After morning bowling, lunch was set up and all the bowlers were able to partake of a great lunch. There were no Santa Barbara bowlers staying for the afternoon bowling this time but a small group of Oxnard bowlers stayed for a short makeup game to finish the afternoon. Ron Dawson describes the game of Lawn Bowls to Nina Cousens. Open House Drawing Our Club had a drawing on August 12, 2016 for the two free club memberships for the rest of the year. All the names of the people that attended our Open House on May 7th, decided to take lessons and joined by paying their dues were included in the drawing. The drawing was held Eileen Morton and Amador Martinez Rollin Along 3 Fall 2016
Sept 21, Vet-Novice Pairs Tournament, Open to all novice and veteran bowlers. Teams had to have one veteran and one novice player, mixed or matched. Three 10-end games. Winner determined by wins and plus points with a 10 point cap. If there is a tie after three games the winner will be determined by total points. 10 teams made up of 22 players were entered. Note: Two of the teams had two novices each. Since we had a late cancellation of two vets, this allowed all novices to play. Teams made up by luck of the draw. 1st: Sandy Rankin-Ron Dawson 3W+14 2nd: Ron Zenone-Peter Westray 2W+15 3rd: Doug Dow-Joan Dawson 2W+12 Super Shots Club Club members on a Super Shot team in the past three months were Dee Press, Sandra Adame, Raul Perez, Art Roberts, Henry Richter, Dick Gibson and Rich Purcell. Members submitting a form to BowlsUSA Super Shots should also add the team names on the bulletin board list for inclusion into this newsletter. Membership The club would like to welcome our new members: Kent Kirkton and Mike Coggins. Wishing you good bowls and happy days on the green. It is important to remember that we need to keep our eyes open for recruiting opportunities for new and returning members. Talk to your neighbors and friends and see if they would like to give lawn bowling a try. In Memory of Robert Bob Lewis June 8, 1923 to October 12, 2016 Ron Dawson and Sandy Rankin Oct 6, Visitation, Oxnard at Santa Barbara, There were 9 bowlers from Oxnard at our Fall visit to the Santa Barbara Lawn Bowls Club. Our teams won one game and lost two. It was a great day in Santa Barbara with clear skies and comfortable weather. All bowlers had a great time. There was a fine lunch served after bowling of a taco bar: corn chips covered with meat, diced tomatoes, lettuce and chopped onions. You could cover the mix with salsa, sour cream, sliced olives and guacamole. Also, a nice variety of desserts. After lunch six Oxnard bowlers stayed for an afternoon game made up of mixed players from both clubs. Lots of fun for everyone. All in all it was a successful day of bowl ing. Bob joined the Oxnard Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club on February 23, 1996 and was a Active Member through He continued on as an Associate Member until 2012 but didn t bowl much during this time. He had been a member of the Channel Islands Yacht Club in Oxnard. He had been married to Margaret and they had a son. Margaret passed on some years earlier. He used to enjoy getting together with friends and play cards. I recall that Bob used to pick up some extra money by moving new cars from the docks in Port Hueneme to the auto dealers. 5 ON BEING THE SKIP IN A LAWN BOWLING GAME 1. You are in charge of your team as director. You must decide, with your opponent, any dispute or refer it to the umpire. Sign both score sheets at the end of a match, and act as scorer in a pairs match. 2. It is part of your job to instruct your LEAD and VICE as to how you want them to play their shots with the best chance of producing a score for your team. Should one of your teammates fail to make the shot called for, don't be critical. Remember, the player knows without being told that it was a bad shot. 3. Stand still, don't move around the head. This can be quite distracting to other players. 4. When your opponent delivers the last bowl at the conclusion of an end, it is your responsibility to remove the mat. 5. It is important to remember that as the director of your team, your attitude towards your teammates and the game will often make the difference between a loss or win. The purpose of the game is to enjoy yourself, make it enjoyable for others and win if you can. But, when your team is down and the breaks seem to be all going against you, even the most naive should recognize that encouragement of your team may accomplish what caustic criticism or languishing on the bench when the LEAD or VICE is on the mat can never, never accomplish, You may not win the game, but your popularity will increase immeasurably. 8. He/she should know when to change the shape of the game by moving the mat and forcing opponents to play the weak hand. 9. He/she should know how to communicate clearly with confidence and assurance. 10. He/she should know how to play the safe shots and avoid giving up a big score. TIPS FOR SKIPS 1. Allow leads to draw twice before bowling for position. 2. Leads should not be asked to drive. 3. Skips should decide which hand plays best and stick with it if possible. 4. Build each head safely. If you must lose an end, it should be by a low score. 5. When you have the shot, bowl for position. When you're down a shot, draw. 6. Do not call for position bowls that will give your opponents a chance to wick in or rest on. 7. Try to cover all positions that the jack would take if wicked. 8. Know when your team is in a position to make a big score. 9. The drive is both an offensive and defensive weapon. Use it to nullify an end, move the jack, or push a bowl up. 10. Blocks are very difficult to make. Practice block shots with opposite hand. Lawn Bowling Trivia CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD SKIP 1. He/she must be good at making all types of shots. 2. He/she should practice the draw, trail, yard on, block and drive. 3. He/she must know the rules of the game. 4. He/she must be responsible for which tactics are used in the game. 5. He/she must be able to evaluate the speed of the green, weakness and strength of the opponent, and strength of his/her team. 6. He/she should know how to build a head on his/her own terms and force the opponent to make difficult shots. 7. He/she must set the tenor for good Sportsmanship; that is, be a real gentleman or lady. There are approximately 10,000 lawn bowlers in the U.S. and 160 lawn bowling clubs. Scotland's population is only 1.5% that of the U.S., yet has 1,386 lawn bowling greens and 150,000 active lawn bowlers. Contributed by Jordan Austin SWD Vet-Novice Pair s Tournament The South West Division held its annual Veteran-Novice pairs on Saturday, Oct 22. It was won by Pat Cronshaw and Jonathan Gartner of Mackenzie LBC. A Fourth place tie was won by Mike Newton (vet) and Peter Westray (novice) of Oxnard LBC. The other team from Oxnard was Demo Arevalo (vet) and Ron Dawson(novice). The Newton/Westray Team finished with a 3-1 record. The Demo/Dawson team had a record. Interestingly, the Newton/Westray team s only loss was to Demo and Ron. The tournament was held at three locations simultaneously ;Mackenzie Park(Santa Barbara),Laguna Beach LBC. and Sun City LBC. At Mackenzie Park 16 teams entered; 12 Rollin Along 5 Fall 2016
from Mackenzie,2 from Santa Barbara LBC, 2 from Oxnard LBC. The format was 4/ten end games, mix or match pairs. Prize money for fourth place was $36.00 per team. The entry cost per team was $40.00 There were no undefeated teams in the tournament. Five teams went 3-1. Places were determined by plus points by Mike Newton From the Editor by Bob Smith The newsletter will be published four times a year. I welcome articles and pictures from members.
