1 Oxnard-Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club, 350 North C Street, Oxnard, CA Spring 2017 President s Message by Ron Zenone The first several months of 2017 has been busy times for our club. The various events and tournaments have been great. The only sad occurrence has been with the passing of long time club member Edith Dowsing who was 101 years young. A gathering in memory of Edith, which was hosted by her brother and two sisters, was held at the club in March. We will miss her smile and uplifting attitude. The tournaments conducted thus far this year included: Mixed Novice Singles on February 1; Vet Novice Pairs on February 27; and the Amador Martinez Triples on April 9. Each of these tournaments had enthusiastic participants that enjoyed the competition. Some could not believe how well they performed. The club had a pleasant visitation at the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling club on March 11. Holmby Park, having two greens, allowed for several other clubs to participate in the visitation. As is usually the case, visitations permit us to renew old friendships and make new ones. We in-turn will be hosting Holmby Park on June 3. Ron and Joan Dawson put together a great St. Patrick s Day fun event. Special thanks go out to those that always help out with the preparations and food served at lunch time. Bowling in the morning was different from usual. Instead of tossing the Jack out first and then rolling bowls, the bowls were rolled first followed by the Jack being tossed. It sure made scoring interesting! We will be having an open house at the club on Saturday, May 13. If you haven t yet signed up to help, please do so. Bob Smith is heading up this effort as he did last year. Last year s open house was a success with us capturing new members. Since new blood is the lifeline of any organization, we want this year s open house to be as successful. Wishing everyone great bowling. Membership The club would like to welcome our new members Peter Nicholas, Kathy Corona and Nancy White. It is important to remember that we need to keep our eyes open for recruiting opportunities for new and returning members. Talk to your neighbors and friends and see if they would like to give lawn bowling a try. Class is in Session The TEAM TRIANGLE by Armand Escalante Reprint from Fall 2011 Although the game of lawn bowling can be played as singles, pairs (doubles), fours (rinks), or triples, it seems that most clubs in their usual game days prefer the latter. For this reason, I am addressing this team arrangement. A triples team should not be thought of as a ladder or a barrel with the skip at the top and the lead at the bottom. A good triples team is a triangle with each team member representing one side of the triangle and making different but equally important contributions to the team effort. Since all beginning lawn bowlers start by playing the position of lead, the impression most people get is that the lead must be the most inferior of all the positions on the team. This is definitely Not So and that is why in serious competition, like tournaments, you will see people who in club play ordinarily are skips playing the position of lead. The lead position is very important because from the very beginning he or she determines whether his or her team is on the offensive or defensive. Most skips who are really knowledgeable of the game feel very fortunate to have a good lead on their team. Very often a well placed bowl by a lead can determine the outcome of an end, a game, or even a whole tournament. So folks, if you are playing the position of lead, remember that you are a crucial part of the team triangle and that your main contributions to your team are to throw the jack to the length your skip wants and then to roll your bowls as close to the jack as possible. You should also remember that if your lead opponent has temporarily outbowled you by putting his or her bowl "on the jack", then your main responsibility to your team is to get the second closest bowl to the jack. Remember the oft-quoted and relevant saying, "As the lead goes, so goes the team. Super Shots Club Club members on a Super Shot team in the past three months were Gloria Brown, Patty Berry, Mike Newton, Dee Press, Sunny Glessner, Geoff Simpson, Pinky Palladino,Ron Dawson, Bob Smith, Pat Zenone, Donna Roberts, Wuhwa Hsu, Linda Lockhart, Ray Anderson, Henry Richter, CJ Juengst and Joe Brown. Members submitting a form to BowlsUSA Super Shots
2 should also add the team names on the bulletin board list for inclusion into this newsletter. In Loving Memory Obituary from Ventura County Star On March 29, 2017 Edith's family put on a Memorial at the Oxnard Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club for a celebration of Edith's life. About 35 club members, guests and family attended. There was a very nice display of photos of Edith through out her life. The family presented Edith's name badge for mounting on our memorial board and donated a collection of Lawn bowling club pins that Edith collected in her travels through out the world. Her children Julie, Joan and John provided a nice lunch for all attending. Edith's Life: Edith Mary Dowsing January 19, 1916 to March 20, 2017 Edith Dowsing, nee Brandrick, Passed away quietly Monday March 20, 2017 at 101 years old at her home in Leisure Village, Camarillo, California. Edith was born in the village of Stone in Stafford, England. At nineteen her job in a British film studio commissary was to ensure everyone paid for their lunch, even Alfred Hitchcock. In 1937 she met and married Reginald Dowsing and survived the second world with their three children living just outside London. The family immigrated to Canada in 1948 and her life blossomed with lawn bowling, alley bowling, sailing and working as a dental assistant. They came to California in 1962 and she worked at J C Penneys for 20 years then retiring with Reg to Leisure Village. She was a founding member of the Oxnard Joslyn Lawn bowling Club, President of the Village Billiard Club, the Village Women's Golf Club and traveled the world, even transiting the Panama Canal at 95. Her life was very active and she only stopped driving just before her 100th birthday. Reg passed in 1986 and she is survived by her children, Julie, Joan and John, grand children, great grand children and two great-great grand children. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 1st at 2:00 in her home in Leisure Village and also on Wednesday, March 29 at Oxnard Joslyn Lawn Bowling Club. With many thanks, Julie, Joan and John Edith's children Amador Martinez Triples Tournament April 9, 2017 The Amador Martinez Triples is open to both women and men. There were sixteen teams from various clubs throughout So. California from Cambria to San Diego that competed. Four teams were from Oxnard. Skips set up their teams any way they want. The entry fee is $75 per team. Lunch is brown bag. Morning snacks and salads and desserts were provided at the lunch time. Format is three 12 - end games, winners will be determined on the basis of wins, losses and plus points with a max 10 points per game. If there is a tie at the end of a game, one more end will be played only to break the tie. If there is a tie at the end of the tournament total points will be used to break the tie. There will be prizes for the first five teams. As it turned out 5th and 6th place were a tie so 5th place was decided by using total points. We had many good players competing today, a number of which had competed successfully in both National and International Tournaments. Oxnard used Rule and for the first time in tournament play today. This is when the jack is knocked out of bounds of play, it is re-spotted on the rink centerline and two metres in from the front ditch and play continues on. Note: We pre-marked all rinks at the two metre spot by using white golf tees placed flush to the surface of the green. The Winners Were: 1. Phil Dunn, Grant Shear, Berry Hayes 3W Bill Brault, Aaron Zangle, Anne Nunes 3W Richard Purcell, Mike Newton, Wuhwa Hsu 3W Kay Tong, Sean McMorris, Howard Horowitz 3W Scott Roberts, Cory Vose, Art Roberts 2W+9 (total points 19) Note: The 6th place team also had 2W+9 but only had total points of 11. 3 16 triples teams participated This Quarter s Club Events Feb 1, Mixed Novice Singles, Open to all novice players. Eight men and women participated. Three 10-end games. Opponents chosen by "luck of the draw". Winners determined by wins-losses and plus points. Winners shown below. Markers for the day were: Bob Smith, Dick Gibson, Carol Smith, Conrad Bilodeau, Demo Arevalo, Jordan Austin and Geoff Simpson. 1st: Ron Dawson 3W+12 2nd: Peter Westray 2W+15 3rd: Sandra Adame 2W+14 3rd Place: Mike Newton, Rich Purcell and Wuhwa Hsu Gold Coast League 2017 Ron Dawson Feb 4, Winter League at MacKenzie Park, Oxnard and MacKenzie Park bowlers This year the schedule has been modified where each club has three teams each and the play has been reduced from eight to six play days to complete the league schedule. The league began on April 4th at MacKenzie Park. Competition is on Wednesdays every other week and rotating between Oxnard and MacKenzie Park. Sue Sullivan from MacKenzie Park is the league Secretary this year and Amador Martinez represents the Oxnard club. Two play days have been completed and at this time the score is Oxnard 16 points and MacKenzie Park has 8. Saturday, Feb 4 marked the conclusion of the Southwest Winter League Series. After 9 games of pairs, over five weekends the final results were totaled. First place was won by Patricia Cronshaw & John Trindade ( Mackenzie Park) with a 8-1 record. Second place was Roger Sullivan (Mackenzie) & Bud Viard (Santa Barbara) ( 7-2). Third place was Mike Newton & Wuhwa Hsu (Oxnard) (7-2 record). Since second & third had the same records, plus points determined the final placing. Newton and 'super substitute' Demo Arevalo (Oxnard) were the only pair to defeat the first place team from Mackenzie. After a slow start of 0-2,the Oxnard team won the next 7 games. (Prize money for 3rd was $80.00 per team.) The round robin, mix-match, pairs tournament is open to all Southwest bowlers. This year ten teams participated: 7 from Mackenzie, 2 from Santa Barbara and 1 from Oxnard. Cost is $40.00 per team. Next year the series will be held in Jan and Feb. It involves either a Sat or a Sunday. The number of weekends depends on the number of teams. Two 14 end pairs games are played. It would be wonderful to see several teams from Oxnard play next year. by Mike Newton Rollin Along 3 Spring 2017
4 Feb 27, Vet-Novice Pairs, Open to all novice and veteran bowlers. Teams had to have one veteran and one novice player, mixed or matched. Three 10-end games. Winner determined by wins and plus points with a 10 point cap. If there is a tie after three games the winner will be determined by total points. 10 teams made up of 20 players were entered. Teams made up by luck of the draw. The first three places are as follows: 1st place: Mike Newton and Randy Juengst 3 W + 8 2nd place: Tory Smith and Sandra Adame 2 W rd place: Gloria Brown and Joan Dawson 2 W st: Mike Newton and Randy Juengst Mar 3, Amador Martinez gives strategy lesson, With a number of new bowlers, some have asked how they can improve their game. He covered the basics and some of the fine points. We had 12 members attend and they felt it was a worth while one hour review. Mar 11, Visitation, Oxnard at Holmby Park LBC, Here is a brief re-cap of our visit to Holmby Park LBC on Saturday, March 11th. As usual we were welcomed with great morning snacks, a fine lunch and with after-game ice cream. We had three teams represented (Peter and Linda Westray and Doris Sneddon), (Dick Gibson, Demo Arevalo and Geoffrey Simpson), (Ray and Sharon Anderson, and Kent Kirkton). In all we came out with two close wins and one loss. In the afternoon Peter, Linda, Doris, Demo and Geoffrey remained and played mixed doubles and/or triples with members of other clubs. The visiting clubs represented were; Oxnard, Alhambra, and Long Beach. I'm not sure how many from each. Lunch: Ray, Demo and Kent Peter Westray Mar 27, Saint Patrick s Day Event, Our St. Patrick's Day Fun Event was hosted by Ron and Joan Dawson. They did it all, planning, cooking, including the decorations. Every one dressed up in their "Irish for the day" outfits. To start the day Ron placed three colored balloons on sticks in the middle of the green. He had everyone take one bowl and slowly walk around the green. He had Irish music playing from a boom Box and when he turned it off he called out a balloon color and we all rolled our bowl to get closest to the balloon. We did this for all three balloons and there were prizes awarded for each balloon winner. Balloon winners were: Red: CJ Juengst, Orange: Demo Arevalo, Blue: Art Roberts The game for the day was called jacks come last. This is where everyone rolls their bowls first. Then one of the team members rolls the jack for the points in that end. The jack rolling is alternated by the teams each end to make it more even. At the end of the 10 end game the team that had the highest score was awarded a prize. The winning team was Ray Anderson, Conrad Bilodeau and Linda Lockhart with a score of 18 points. We had a great turnout with most rinks full. With guests we had about 43 for lunch. We feasted on corn beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots. Donna Roberts brought in an enchilada she made. There were several desserts plus lemonade to drink. Our hosts: Ron and Joan Dawson Mar 31, Men s Novice and Women s Novice Tournaments, We held two separate Novice Tournaments at the same time. One for the Women and one for the Men. The Tournament was open to all Women and Men Novice players. Three 10-end games. Opponents chosen by "luck of the draw". We had four Women competing in the Women's Tournament and six Men in the Men's Tournament. Winners determined by wins-losses and plus points with a ten point cap. We had a tie in the Women's Tournament between 1st and 2nd place so we used total points to decide the winner. Women's Novice 1st. Sandra Adame 2W + 9 (Total points 14) 2nd. Apr 27, Lawn Bowl Introduction for Oxnard Employees, On Thursday, April 27, 2017 Oxnard employees held their quarterly meeting at the Oxnard Joslyn Lawn Bowls Club clubhouse. After the meeting Renee Rakestraw from Oxnard Senior Services had organized an introduction to the sport of lawn bowling to take place on our bowling green. Club President Ron Zenone gathered together some club volunteers and got the morning bowling underway. We gave a brief instruction about the sport and the object of the game. Our visitors were not familiar with the sport and some said they didn't even know our bowling green was there. Obviously there were many questions. After some practice, teams were formed up and games of several ends were played. Several visitors said they really liked the new experience and would like to learn more about the sport. There were 18 men and women City employees that participated. The volunteers that helped from our club were: Denny Ryan, Demo Arevalo, Randy Juengst, Linda Lockhart, Rich Purcell, Pinky Palladino, Ron Dawson and Ron Zenone. 18 City employees were introduced to Lawn Bowling Women 1st Place: Sandra Adame Club members that helped with the bowls instruction. Men 1st Place: Kent Kirkton L-R: Denny Ryan, Demo Arevalo, Randy Juengst, Linda Lockhart, Rich Purcell, Pinky Palladino, Ron Dawson and Club President Ron Zenone (behind the camera) who organized the event.
