1 OSHAWA LAWN B0WLING CLUB NORTHVIEW COMMUNITY CENTRE, 150 BEATRICE ST. E., OSHAWA, ON. ( ) NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 OPEN HOUSE MAY 23-26, :00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 OSHAWA LAWN BOWLING CLUB at NORTHVIEW COMMUNITY CENTRE Please sign up at the Spring Meeting to help. PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Welcome to the start of another Bowling Season. As we anxiously watched the weather improving, the ground keeping crew enthusiastically accomplished the task of getting the greens ready and now is the time Let the Bowling Begin! We are looking forward to another great year of bowling. Be sure to get yourself involved in our daily and special events and tournaments. We welcome Marg Leblanc as the Vice President for Marg and I and the executive committee have been hard at work through the winter months planning and organizing events and activities for the 2017 season. News Highlights There appears to be a trend amongst sponsors to change the way that they award their sponsorship programmes. We experienced this recently as some sponsors failed to continue their sponsorship of the club, and, when we approached other potential sponsors we were told that sponsorships are now awarded through their corporate groups, who don t award sponsorships unless the group being sponsored has charity status, which we do not. Nevertheless, we did obtain two new sponsors, Lovell Drugs who will co-sponsor the Ladies Luncheon Tournament on August 24th, and Mackenzie s Restaurant & Pub in Ajax who will sponsor the Victoria Day Club Tournament in May after the Village of Taunton Mills moved their sponsorship to the Novice Tournament on September 30th. Due to the decline in sponsorships, we are looking to include more fund raising activities to improve revenues for the club. Please support these fund raising activities as much as you can by purchasing tickets etc., or volunteering on the fund raising committee. Please Note! The Ladies Luncheon Tournament is scheduled for August 24 th and will be 3 x 12 end games, so ladies, organize your teams and sign up as soon as you can as we need as much support as we can get with our new sponsor Lovell Drugs. If you have fellow bowlers at other clubs, please inform them as soon as possible so that we can get the best turn out for this event. Work is now completed on the extension to the sheds so that we can store grounds equipment on site to prevent liability issues going forward. The extension and the equipment room modifications have been completed with generous donations from one of our members. The Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club will be hosting the District Pairs Tournament on June 10 th /11th. The Oshawa lawn Bowling Club will be hosting the District Fall meeting in October. Ontario Lawn Bowling Association (OLBA) has increased its member fees by $6 per person for The executive committee has agreed that we will not pass on this cost to members this year. Special thanks to all those members who came out for the Spring Clean Up, we appreciate that the club has members who are willing to volunteer their time to make the club a better place for all to enjoy. Please check on the bulletin boards for other information about activities that are planned for 2017.
2 THE WEEKLY SCHEDULE FOR OUR CLUB MEMBERS MONDAYS Everyone is welcome beginning Monday May 15 at 1:00 pm sharp and every Monday thereafter. This is an excellent way to get some practice in a fun setting. Entry is $1 which will be returned to winning players as prize money. When you arrive, put your name on a card and record your own score. SCORING: 4 Points are given for shot bowl, 3 points for second, 2 points for third, & 1 point for fourth. This year there will be three sessions held on successive Mondays at 7 pm on June 12, 19, and 26. Try to arrive 15 minutes earlier for set up. The Focus will be on basic skills such as the following: Proper set up of delivery mat and ground sheet Placement of feet and distance on delivery mat Proper hand grip of jack and controlled delivery within boundaries of rink Proper hand grip of bowl and bias for forehand and backhand delivery Role of lead in relation to play (mat set up, delivery and placement of jack, placement of bowls to jack, understanding scoring, reasons for measurement, when to rake bowls, an awareness of the game, keeping the pace, good sportsmanship and etiquette) New members, as well as 2nd year bowlers, are encouraged to attend these coaching sessions to consolidate the expectations of play, bowling techniques, rules of the game, and etiquette. Everyone who attends is expected to help with the set up and putting away of the equipment. Set up is at 6:45 pm with instruction beginning at 7:00 pm. Each weekly session lasts about 60 minutes and ends at approximately 8:00 pm. Usually, participants will be divided into small groups to play either a mini game or Some participants may require further individual instruction. Please contact Membership Sign-Up Representative inside the club house during Open House Week if you decide to become an active member. STRAWBERRY NIGHT SPECIAL JITNEY Friday, June 10 th (if strawberries are available) This is our first Club Special Jitney of the Season. Cost is $5. This is a fun tournament for all of our members. Teams will be drawn. Two 12 end games. Bring your own lunch. All Members Welcome!
4 CLUB LOCK UP REMINDER Just a reminder to our members with keys that it is important that the premises (both gates, all equipment rooms, the main clubroom) be locked when you leave the property after bowling to help deter theft and vandalism. If you are attending an Open Bowling session, please check with other members remaining on the greens to ensure that they have both knowledge of and confidence with the lock-up procedures. Many of our members have not been issued keys yet DISTRICT 14 PLAYDOWNS This year the format for the playdowns has reverted to its original form. DATE EVENT FORMAT LOCATION May 27/28 Fours WF/F Whitby June 10/11 Pairs WP/P Oshawa June 24/25 Triples WT/T Whitby July 1/2 Mixed Pairs MP Cannington July 11/12 Senior Triples Sr.WT/T Lindsay July 29/30 Singles WS/S Cobourg Aug 26/27 Novice Pairs Nv. WP/P Bobcaygeon VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN BUSY SPRUCING UP OUR CLUB FOR THE NEW SEASON A big thank you goes out to the following people who found the time and effort to help make our playing environment cleaner and more presentable: Doug Marshall, Bob Souch, John Mackenzie, Pat Sayer, Ken Bunner, Clayton Young, Bryan Glover, Gerry Henderson, Den Sims, Bruce Morrison, Gerry Dostie, Howard Taylor, Robert Steffen, Dieter Naegelkraemer, Margaret Leblanc, Doreen Souch, Cathie Sayer, Karen Howard, Loretta Worsley, Priscilla Downs, Sheila Rideout, Jacqueline Pettes, and Carol Gifford. Your hard work gave our facility a real facelift. It is now officially ready to bowl. In addition, we thank the following members for purchasing the wood, cutting and assembling, and staining the new bowl carriers that are stored in our shed: Ross cut all of the pieces from a template made by Raymond, Mike and Raymond glued and nailed them all together, Raymond routed the handles and Gerry stained them all. A great group effort. Thanks also to Gerry, Bryan and Mike for digging and cementing the posts for the shed addition and Gerry and Dieter for attaching and shingling the roof. They also did all the framing and siding. This new structure blends in well and will be used for needed storage.
