1 ST BENEDICT S PREPARATORY SCHOOL SPORT BROCHURE, 3 RD TERM 2012 Dear Parents and Boys, The Preparatory School Sports Department would like to congratulate and extend a special thanks to all Bennies parents and boys for their commitment, efforts, perseverance, dedication and support during the past winter sports season of term 2. The bracing weather definitely did not have an effect on the commitment standards as coaches and boys continued their efforts and perseverance on the practice enclosure. The results achieved were outstanding and all the hard work certainly paid off. It was an historical term which delivered remarkable moments and memories which our rugby boys, coaches and parents were fortunate to experience. Our Rugby boys enjoyed the enormous achievements of winning their respective Golden Lions B rugby leagues this season. Well done to the U/9 A, U/10 A, U/11 A and 1 ST Rugby sides who all contributed to the successful 2012 Rugby season where Preparatory School was represented by a Golden Lions winner in every age group for the first time at this year s rugby finals. Well done and thank you to all rugby boys and parents for their hard work, dedication and support. It is a real honour to be part of such a positive and dedicated rugby family. We are also very proud and privileged to have enjoyed a very successful, eventful and fun filled soccer season as many Bennies boys engaged in various soccer activities throughout the season. Our soccer boys enjoyed countless opportunities to express their soccer skills as not only continued to participate in the local Gauteng Primary Schools soccer leagues and soccer programme, but also accepted invitations to attend local Traditional Independent School soccer festivals and fixtures. We value our relationships highly with these Schools and persist to extend and broaden these relations. entered four teams into Discovery Knock out cup competition for the first time this year after our U/14 A football side won their section of this competition in Our boys enjoyed experiencing these contests and competed very well as the following achievements was obtained; The U/10 Invitational team reached the semi final as they narrowly lost on a count out of corner kicks after the match was drawn. The U/11 A and U/12 A teams reached the 3 RD round of their respective sections and the A team have done extremely well to have qualified for the Knock out cup Final up to this stage. We would like to wish these boys all the best for the Knock out cup final as they will meet the A team from KEPS. A special mention must also go to our U/9 Invitational soccer team who took part in the annual Bedfordview Primary School U/9 Soccer Tournament. These boys performed extremely well as they walked away with this year s winning trophy for the 8 TH time. Well done to these boys for this magnificent achievement! also hosted the annual A Soccer festival at on another chilly and unfriendly winter s weekend. A special thank you must be extended to all our soccer parents and in particular Mr. Marshall and the soccer department for all the hard work that was done behind the scenes to make sure that this event runs smoothly and efficiently. The Soccer Festival certainly proved to deliver a very high standard of football as well as fun filled and exciting moments. Thank you to all our sponsors for supporting this event. The third term of 2012 will certainly generate high levels of enthusiasm and expectation amongst the Bennies boys as we are entering a very exciting sports period during the months of September, October and November. The 3 RD term of 2012 will provide many sports fixtures, activities and exciting events and sports tours to look forward to. The sports programme at the Preparatory School allows a substantial amount of boys the opportunity to participate in numerous activities and sporting codes. The coaches are looking forward to assist all Bennies boys with their progress, development and witness their growth as they gain experience from every match situation. The Swimming and Water polo sections will actively engage in the preparation of our swimmers and water polo players for the upcoming seasons. Our swimming section has consistently displayed very competitive results over a number of swimming seasons. Our swimmers along with their coach will be working very hard in pre season swimming training sessions to achieve their dream swimming goal at the Prestige swimming event at the end of the year. Water polo at has become very popular amongst the boys and it is pleasing to see that this sport section is slowly but surely growing and becoming a strong force to be reckoned with now and in the near future. has for the first time this year been invited to the Independent Schools Water polo festival at SACS in Cape Town which is once again a result of broadening and extending our relationships with new traditional schools from around the country.

2 With the many activities on offer our senior boys will also keep the Bennies flag flying high as they participate in basketball and rowing preparations and fixtures. Our basketball teams have been entered into an organized league with a mixed bag of competitive Government and Independent Schools. Our U/11 age group will also be offered the opportunity to choose basketball as one of their sporting codes. These boys will also be introduced to basketball fixtures along with our senior boys. Both of these sporting codes are also very well liked by a number of boys and supply our senior boys with an introduction, early experience and early development of the respective sporting codes before they enter the College. We are however part of a small group of schools who offer these respective sporting codes in the Preparatory sports section and especially at U/11 level. Another division which leaves our boys with unforgettable memories, extremely entertaining moments and of which is also a life learning experience is our sports tours which holds very exciting plans for the 3 RD Term of The Preparatory School sports department is in an operational stage to provide more boys with the opportunity to experience a Bennies sports tour. Our cricket boys are thrilled and counting down the days to depart on their respective cricket tours to Kwazulu Natal and Cape Town. The U/11 A & 2 ND Cricket sides will be touring to Cape Town from October and the U/10 A & 1 ST XI cricket sides will be touring to Kwazulu Natal from October All four teams will be vastly challenged as they face respected traditional cricketing schools on these expeditions. have also gladly accepted the invitation to the annual SACS, Cape Town Water polo festival. Our A Water polo team will travel to Cape Town on October to represent our School at this highly respected Water Polo Festival. The second term saw Preparatory School participe in the Independent Schools' League (Firsts, Seconds, Thirds and U11 s). We, also, hosted our annual "Keenest of the Keen" Under 13 Tennis Tournament. This tournament caters for those players who do not normally get a chance to go on any tennis tours. The following schools participated: Bennies (two teams), Fairland (2 teams), St Stithians, Redhill, EduPlex and Pretoria-Oos. also hosted our annual Under 11 Invitational Tennis Tournament. Louw Geldenhuys successfully defended their title, followed by Fairland, Bennies, Pretoria-Oos, Cornwall Hill, St Stithians, Jan Celliers and St David's. There will be two tennis tours during the upcoming August holidays. Good luck to these boys who will be representing our School at the under 13 Truida Kestell tournament, as well as the Sun City Private Schools' tournament. 3 SPORTS POLICY AT ST BENEDICT S PREPARATORY SCHOOL GENERAL Sport at Preparatory School is an important dimension of the broad scope of primary phase learning. Given that the profile of sport will operate as secondary when managed within the fuller context of the academic curriculum, our prime motivation for offering sport is to provide a learning area that will give our boys an opportunity to: 1.) Exercise and develop their mental and physical potential; 2.) Participate with others within a structured programme in order to develop recognised and acceptable social skills; 3.) Have fun; 4.) Learn to cope and manage their reponses within a competitive environment; 5.) Learn to give of their best at all times and situations; 6.) Take advantage of and learn within a wide variety of sporting codes that are provided for the boys enjoyment and extention. 7.) Develop certain basic skills that will encourage the boys to go on to further these particular disciplines in the near future; 8.) Recognise and make provision for the extension of boys who demonstrate special talent and flair in particular sporting codes. COACHING DEVELOPMENT Coaches should be qualified to coach at the levels they are coaching. At Present all Rugby coaches are South African Rugby Boksmart qualified and some rugby coaches have also attained the Level 1 and Level 2 IRB Rugby courses respectively, while in other sports we will be sending outside student coaches to the relative coaching courses which are on offer. Our permanent coaches continue striving to improve and update their coaching levels and courses as our rugby coaches have also continued attending Golden Lions Primary Schools refereeing courses as well as joined the Golden Lions Senior refereeing Union to extend further opportunities. Coaches will be sent on courses and outside students will be invited to do in-house training and coaching sessions with our experienced full time sports staff members. REFEREEING AND UMPIRING As in coaching, coaches need to attend courses or clinics offered by sports bodies and organizations to update their knowledge of the laws of the games. There are various sporting bodies who offer these courses and clinics as refresher courses at the beginning of the respective sports seasons. REPRESENTATIVE STATUS Preparatory School has a proud tradition of boys gaining higher honours across a variety of sporting codes. We support all our boys who gain higher recognition notwithstanding the fact that their selections more often than not create disruption in our own domestic sports programme. For the sake of the majority, we will not be dictated to by any of these external club sporting bodies. FIXTURES Preparatory School participates in more fixtures than most Preparatory Schools. With regard to our main summer and winter sports, we are, on average, able to field 17 cricket teams, 3 School swimming teams, 9 rugby teams, 21 football teams and 30 Hockey teams and 8 Tennis teams. The following sporting codes are also very well liked by the boys and the numbers are certainly growing every year; Water polo, Rowing & Basketball. Finding fixtures for all these teams are sometimes problematic and challenging. We also play fixtures outside of our area and compete against a diverse range of schools. The decline of organized school sport in many state schools impacts on in terms of potential fixtures. Nevertheless, we still manage to play in the region of 100 cricket matches (25 matches a week) and 125 Rugby matches per season.

4 PARENT PARTCIPATION/SUPPORT/EXPECTATIONS Parent support is welcomed and encouraged. Personal remarks on referees and instructions to players can under no circumstances be tolerated, and parents guilty of such behavior will be reprimanded. Making use of parents as additional or back-up coaches will also not be permitted regardless of the relevant expertise. Parent expectation at is understandably high. High levels of professionalism by coaches as reflected in meticulous record keeping is expected at St Benedict s for example records pertaining to matches played by each individual boy in their age group batting opportunities, bowling opportunities, etc. Attendance register will also be taken by coaches before every afternoon practice session as the no practice no play policy will apply. There will certainly be movement between A and B groups, B and C groups etc. Coaches are encouraged to send promising players up to higher teams to be looked at. If any parent wants to query or question any team selection or complain about any sporting matter regarding the sports programme at Preparatory School, the following must be adhered to; a. No complaint shall be discussed to a coach or selector next to the playing field or in front of other parents and boys. Parents must make an appointment to resolve and discuss the matter professionally. b. All complaints must also be addressed in writing and mailed to the respective coach, Mr. Badenhorst and Mr. Reed. c. Parents must respect and accept the time taken to resolve a particular matter. SPECTATORS CODE OF CONDUCT Be aware of the fact that children should most often play sport for the enjoyment they derive from it. Encourage your child to play by the rules/laws. Make it clear that cheating is just a way to get an unfair advantage by dodging the rules. Teach your child that victory isn t everything trying your best is just as important. Applaud good play by either team. Back up the referee, don t publicly question his fairness or ability. Children learn best by example. Set a good example. Encourage your child to improve his skills through perseverance and coaching. Stay off the pitch. Coaches and referees are generally qualified to be there. They have worked hard to earn their qualifications. This includes running onto the field to provide your son with refreshments at half time. This will be the coaches responsibility to ensure that their respective team is provided with drinks. Parents will be required to respect the regulations of the match venue including parking, restricted areas and consumption of alcohol at the grounds. Only a coach may dismiss boys or his team after a sporting fixture. Parents must stay clear of the cricket nets or training field during trials or practices. Don t abuse anyone especially the referee. COMPULSORY/OPTIONAL Currently only swimming, Cross Country and Athletics are compulsory sporting codes at Preparatory School. All other sports are voluntary on the no practice no play basis which means that boys need to attend their weekly afternoon practice sessions for a respective sporting season to be eligible for team selection. All boys at are however required to participate in at least one winter and two summer sporting codes during the Integrated day sport sessions of which one main summer sporting code (Swimming, Cricket or both sporting codes) needs to be selected. SPORTS OFFERED TERM 1: Cricket, Swimming, Tennis, Basketball, Rowing, Water polo, Pre season Rugby, Golf and Athletics TERM 2: Rugby, Soccer, Cross Country, Tennis, Pre season Hockey, Pre season Water polo and Internal Golf TERM 3: Cricket, Swimming, Tennis, Basketball, Rowing, Water polo and Golf

5 TRANSPORT We make use of the fleet of buses depending on availability of home run trips to travel to and return from all weekly sports fixtures. School buses are also utilized for Saturday fixtures, only if the fixture is being played in the Pretoria region. The buses depart from and return to the College parking area after fixtures. The arrangement is for parents to fetch their boys from the College parking area upon return of the buses or boys must be fetched from the respective fixture venue directly after their respective match. Please see the weekly sports newsletter for indications of weekly and daily bus departure and arrival times. Grade 3 boys will always be fetched by their coaches from the Junior Preparatory School and walked across the road to the College parking area. Grade 3 boys will under no circumstances be allowed to travel with their parents from the Junior Prep School to the College parking area before departing with the School buses to away fixture. Register will be taken by the coaches at the Junior Preparatory School before the boys are walked across the road to the College parking area. The same arrangements will apply for weekly Grade 3 practices which will be held at the College fields. There will always be a staff member travelling on each and every bus to and from the fixture venue with the boys. TEAM SELECTIONS Every sports season starts from a zero base with no automatic team selections. Trials in all age groups are held from scratch and every boy has a chance to establish himself in a team appropriate to each individual s ability. This process dispels the myth that boys remain in the same ability grouping from U/9 to the Open age group. Boys develop and mature at different rates and stages, which is taken into account when selections are made for the various sports groupings. The process of trials and grouping is arduous and time consuming but very necessary. The sports groups, once selected, are not cast in stone and boys may and do move from one group to another, depending on performance, attitude, team combinations and ability. COMMUNICATION The Sports Department management will make every effort to pro-actively communicate both the sports policy and the ongoing programme and related events to all parents and other interested parties. This will be done by the following means; The termly sports brochure for the upcoming term will be issued on the Preparatory School website to all Grade 3 7 parents at the end of a completed term. The sports brochure will contain important dates and sports fixtures as well as early notice of upcoming sports tour dates. It will also explain detailed sports policies and arrangements around the complete Preparatory School sports programme. The Preparatory School sports newsletter will be issued on every Friday afternoon which will confirm the final details, planning and arrangements for the upcoming week s sports programme. Parents will be notified of any late changes with regards to fixtures or rained out matches via the sports notes which will be issued to the boys to notify their parents. Team lists for sports fixtures are posted on the Sports notice boards at the Preparatory and Junior Preparatory School well in advance. It is the responsibility of all boys from Grade 4 7 to check the sport notice board for team inclusion and they have to tick next to their name. Any boy who fails to attend a sports fixture which he has been selected for without consulting with the master in charge of the respective sporting code will be reprimanded. We will also be updating and notifying parents with late information and changes with regards to sports fixtures etc. via the School sms line. Grade 3 boys will receive detailed fixture letters to notify their parents of events and sports fixture that they have been selected or nominated to participate in. Parents must please take full responsibility and read sports notifications, the sports brochure and the weekly sports newsletter for more sports information. It is the responsibility of the parent concerned to notify Mr. Badenhorst and the master in charge of the respective sport in writing two days prior to a sports fixture if a boy cannot participate for any reason whatsoever.

6 ST BENEDICT S PREPARATORY SCHOOL CRICKET POLICIES Cricket is a unique and very special game. We believe it plays a consequential role in the education and development of a young boy. It is a team game that teaches discipline, manners, etiquette and most importantly perseverance. The game of cricket is one of the best levelers e.g. a boy scoring a fifty in one match and then failing to score in another. It teaches boys to focus and concentrate. A lapse of either could cost a wicket or runs. Preparatory School enters cricket teams into the local East area leagues, Independent school friendly leagues, Wednesday Super Leagues as well as traditional Saturday cricket fixtures, so as to afford as many of our boys the opportunity of participating in school matches. Our cricket coaches who are all currently involved in coaching roles and administrative positions with JHB East and the Gauteng Primary Schools Cricket Association have a love for the game of cricket and their aim is to coach as many boys as professionally and effectively as possible. have recently for the second year running been awarded with the privilege of hosting the Gauteng Primary Schools U/12 cricket week at Bennies, and BCC. With eight turf cricket pitches the cricket section will be welcoming the 16 area teams from around Gauteng early in October. This is certainly an exciting event to look forward to. Our coaches meet regularly to discuss the progress of the boys. In addition, they are dedicated to imparting their knowledge of the game, and developing skills and techniques of the players and deliver meaningful and enjoyable coaching sessions. Be assured that they do have the best interests of the boys at heart. And we do appeal to parents to please respect their integrity, experience and professional attitude when it comes to team selection. In essence, it is after all your son s game. Respect his individuality; his development level; his competency and his ability to play within the team, where he can have fun and where he feels he can make a meaningful contribution, without having to contend with unnecessary pressures. In doing so he will have a better chance of being just a boy, and above all, playing and enjoying cricket, which will provide him with experiences that correspond so closely to life, and which he may only draw upon many years from now. CRICKET EQUIPMENT Cricket bag, Cricket bat, cricket ball, cricket pads, cricket gloves, cricket groin protector, thigh pad (optional), school mushroom cricket cap, cricket helmet. Every boy who chooses to play cricket at will need his own cricket kit. When choosing a cricket bat, many parents feel that they should get a bat that their son can grow into, in order for it to last longer. This is a grave error and one that will have a major impact on your son s batting. Please consult the table below for an indication on the most suitable size of bat for your son: Under 1,20m tall - Size 2 1,20m 1,40m tall - Size 3 1,40m 1,50m tall - Size 4 1,50m 1,60m tall - Size 5 1,60m 1,70m tall - Size 6 1,70m 1,80m tall - Harrow 1,80m upwards - Short handle Rather have a bat that is too light than one that is too heavy. CRICKET DRESS CODE Dress code for matches; White cricket shirt, long white socks, white cricket shoes or trainers, blue mushroom cricket cap and a Blazer is compulsory for all boys. Dress code for practices; White PT shirt, Blue PT shorts, blue cap, white socks and cricket shoes. All clothing and equipment must be clearly marked. The St Benedicts Prep School cricket shirt and the blue mushroom cap can be purchased from Edendale outfitters or Esquires. CRICKET ETTIQUETTE Our boys are to be correctly dressed at all times All boys are to field in the blue mushroom cricket cap. A wide brimmed sun hat may also be worn. Blazers are to be worn before and after a match and during the tea/ lunch break The captain is to wear his blazer during the toss on the pitch The umpires are to receive complete respect from players and parents. The umpire must be addressed Sir or Mr. Umpire by all players. When taking guard, each batsman shall greet the umpire and then ask politely for guard in a loud clear voice. We treat our opposition team members with the utmost respect and courtesy at all times and occasions. No abusive or foul language is permitted. Boys are to sit together on the side of the field when waiting to bat. Only the next boy in may have balls thrown to him to warm up. Boys should sit with their team members at all times during the match. The fielding side is to wait for the umpires to go onto the field first before they walk onto the field. The umpires are to be clapped onto the field by the fielding side. No player drops a catch on purpose. In the event of that happening, players will encourage and assist the unfortunate player. Immediately after the match has ended, all players are to shake hands, in a warm manner, with each member of the opposing team and with the umpires. The scorers are to be thanked by each player. Our boys are to be punctual at all times (There are very few valid reasons for not arriving at a match or a practice)

7 Behavior off the field is just as important as on the field. We expect parents to encourage and applaud their boys. No alcohol to be consumed on the sporting grounds during match fixtures. Your understanding of this matter will be greatly appreciated. Parents are requested to remain off the playing field and clear of the nets during practices and cricket trials. All Bennies boys, parents and coaches play a very important role when representing, coaching or supporting our boys during sports fixtures. It is important to always build on our relationships and companionship with associated Schools. The Sports department at Preparatory School always strives to build new healthy relationships with traditional Schools as well as extend our reputation and relationships with Schools in other provinces. DUTIES OF THE TEAM CAPTAIN To be selected as the captain of your cricket team is both a great honor and a great responsibility. You have been given a role of leadership and your team will be looking to you for guidance and direction. You will ultimately have to make decisions, although you should never disregard the advice of the senior players in your team, and of course, your coach. The captain of a team need to constantly make decisions regarding the state of the game; who should I bowl? Should I change the field? If I win the toss, should I bat or bowl? What will the pitch do? Although these are big decisions for a boy to make, you should remain calm and level-headed and if necessary, consult your coach for advice. Do not panic! Your duties as captain entail ensuring that all the boys on the team list have checked against their names. You should then establish that they are all aware of the date, time and venue of the match. At the match, check that all of your team is present and correctly attired. You will need to introduce yourself to the opposing team s captain, the umpires and go out to the pitch and toss the coin. This should always be done with your blazer on. During the game, keep your team with you as this provides an ideal opportunity for you to discuss strategies and to inform the team of your plans or tactics. It also builds up team spirit. Keep yourself and your team informed as to the state of the game at all times. (What the score is? How many wickets have fallen? When is tea? Remind your players that they are to take lunch and tea with their blazers on. The opposition, umpires and coaches should be thanked while you are wearing the school blazer. Caps are not to be worn during the lunch or tea interval. Players are to be reminded that they arrive and travel home in their blazers. Remember, the success of your team off the field is as important as your success on the field. CRICKET MATCH ARRANGEMENTS Saturday fixtures: Boys must meet at the match venue 45 min before the start of a match. School transport will only be available on Saturday mornings for cricket fixtures being played in Pretoria. Weekly cricket fixtures: School transport will be utilized for all weekly away and cricket fixtures. Grade 3 boys will be fetched from the Junior Prep school (Grade 3 sport collection area) for all weekly cricket matches and the bus will depart from the College parking area. The busses return to the College parking area and boys must be fetched by their parents from the College parking area or from the respective match venue directly after their match. Cricket fixtures do sometimes take longer than planned due to teams changing slowly between overs, late starts, traffic jams etc. There will always be a coach or staff member returning back on the bus too from away fixtures with the boys. All grade 3 boys will receive match information letters to inform parents of their match date, venue and times. Only boys who receive match info letters will be participating in the respective cricket fixture. Grade 3 parents must make use of the Grade 3 sports notice board at the Junior Prep School. PRACTICE AND MATCH ARRANGEMENTS Team lists will be posted on the notice board well in advance and it is the responsibility of the boys and the captains to check the details of team inclusion, venues, dates, times etc. All boys from Grade 3 7 must attend all sports practices to qualify for team selection. Commitment to the school s sporting program and the honouring of fixtures is essential, not only for our reputation but also as a life skill for the boys. It is expected; therefore of all boys from Grade 3 7 to make themselves available for all scheduled school fixtures. If a boy cannot participate in a fixture due to illness or medical conditions, parents are required to inform the coach concerned. A proper note from his parents or doctor s letter must also be handed to the coach. Where there are repeated incidents of missing matches, Mr. Badenhorst and / or Mr. Reed will be called upon to investigate the matter fully. The listed fixtures issued are subject to change due to rain or unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, parents will be notified as soon as is possible. Grade 3 boys will be fetched from the Junior Prep School by their coaches at 13h30 for all Monday afternoon practice sessions. The arrangement is that boys are fetched by their parents from the College fields after their practice. Saturday fixtures: Boys must meet at the match venue 45 min before the start of a match. School transport will only be available on Saturday mornings for cricket fixtures being played in Pretoria.

8 SPORTS PERIOD 1 OF TERM 3, 2012 The following sporting codes will be offered to boys during the month of September. Hockey will remain the main sporting code for this month. POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR HOCKEY It will be compulsory for all hockey boys (Grade 3 7) to attend all the respective scheduled Hockey trial sessions to be eligible for team selection. It will also be very important for all Hockey boys (Grade 3 7) to attend the weekly afternoon practice sessions. Register will be taken at all afternoon practice sessions. Boys who do not attend afternoon practice sessions will not be considered for team selection. If a boy cannot attend an afternoon practice session due to any medical condition or any other reason whatsoever a proper note signed by his parents must be handed in to Mr. Flude. Dress code for Integrated day and afternoon hockey practices; White PT shirt, Blue PT shorts, shin pads, hockey shoes or trainers and long blue hockey socks must be worn at all times. Boys will not be allowed to participate in any hockey activities if they do not have shin pads. A gum guard is optional. Dress code for matches; Grade 3, Grade 4 & Grade 5 (U/11 B); White PT shirt, Blue PT shorts, hockey shoes or trainers and long blue hockey socks must be worn. U/11 A, U/12 & Hockey teams; Blue and red checked hockey shirt, blue PT shorts, Long Blue socks and shin pads must be worn at all times. Boys may also wear their tracksuit on cold practice days and also to arrive with at matches. We would like to encourage parents to purchase hockey sticks for their boys, but the School will also supply hockey sticks to those boys who do not have their own hockey sticks. All boys will be participating in their Grade and not age group. The various Grades will be ensue the following formats for the hockey season; GRADE MATCH FORMAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Grade 3 6-A-SIDE, mixed ability teams. ¼ Field Grade 4 6-A-SIDE, mixed ability teams. ¼ Field. All boys who attend afternoon practice sessions will be rotated to play in the weekly hockey fixtures. All Grade 5 boys who attend the scheduled hockey trials will be monitored by the hockey coaches for the selection of the U/11 A hockey squad. It is imperative for all Grade 5 hockey boys to attend every trial session. If a boy is not able to attend a certain trial session due to medical conditions or any other reason whatsoever, the parents of the boy concerned must consult with Mr. Badenhorst. Grade 6 hockey boys will also be considered for 1 ST team selection at the Open hockey trials. Grade 7 A, B & C to play normal 11- A-side hockey. Full field. The 1 ST hockey squad will consist out of Grade 7 boys and Grade 6 boys who meet with the required selection standards.

9 GENERAL AND ADDITIONAL SPORTS ARRANGEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2012 The afternoon sports program will start from Tuesday 11 September 2012 for all boys from Grade 3 7 as per the afternoon sporting program table below. All boys from Grade 3 7 will select their chosen sporting codes as mentioned above during their first integrated day sport session in term 3. It is compulsory for all Bennies boys from Grade 3 7 to participate in at least one sporting code during the integrated day sports sessions. Boys may choose a maximum of two sporting codes which they can participate in during the month of September on a weekly rotational basis. Only boys who attend all afternoon training sessions will be considered for match and team inclusion. The U/10 A, U/11 A, 2 ND & 1 ST cricket sides will be training during the integrated day sport sessions in September. All boys must remember to bring their cricket equipment for these cricket training sessions. These boys will be introduced to early pre season cricket training to prepare for their upcoming cricket tours. Boys who are involved in hockey and one of the cricket tour sides must attend the pre season cricket training sessions during their integrated day period and attend their hockey practices during the afternoon training sessions. The Grade 3 arrangement with regards to the pre season morning swimming training sessions; Parents must drop off their boys at the Indoor swimming pool at 5h50. The swimming coaches will walk all Grade 3 boys across the road to the Junior Preparatory School after their training session. Grade 3 boys will be fetched by their coaches from the Junior Preparatory School for all Monday afternoon sports training sessions as well as any other additional weekly sporting training sessions and for all sports fixtures as per times stated in the weekly sports newsletter. The weekly sports newsletter will be available to download on the Preparatory School website. Please ensure that you download a copy of each and every week s sports newsletter for detailed sports information. A hard copy of the sports newsletter may also be collected from the Preparatory and Junior Preparatory School reception area. The main sporting codes for this sports period will be cricket and swimming as per the Independent Boys Preparatory Schools sports structures. All boys from grade 3 7 must select either swimming or cricket as one of their integrated day sporting codes. All boys from Grade 3 7 will also be allowed to change sporting codes during a respective sporting season due to the fact that our Preparatory School sports program and policy allows boys at this age to experience a taste of as many sporting codes as possible. The process that must be followed for a boy to be cleared from his original sport selection will be as follows; 1. A proper letter signed by his parent/s must be handed in to Mr. Badenhorst who will discuss the change of sporting codes with the Master in Charge of the respective sporting code. 2. The decision for a boy to change his sporting codes will be discussed at the weekly sports forum. 3. When cleared by the Preparatory School sports forum, the boy will be granted the change of sporting codes. All Bennies boys from Grade 3 7 must select at least two sporting codes which they will participate in during the integrated day sports sessions. All boys from Grade 3 7 will follow the weekly rotation system for their selected integrated day sporting codes. Please see the sporting codes selection blocks in table below which all boys from Grade 3 7 have to select only one combination block of. All Grades will select their respective sporting codes block with their sports coaches during the first week s Integrated day sessions of term 3. Please note that the integrated day sessions during the week, Tuesday 11 Friday 14 September 2012 will be utilized to complete the Prep School swimming trials. It will be compulsory for all boys from Grade 3 7 to participate in these swimming trials. It is expected of all Bennies boys to participate in at least two swimming strokes during the School swimming trials. If a boy is sick or cannot participate due to any medical condition a proper note signed by his parents or doctor s note must please be handed in to Mr. Marshall on the day of the swimming trials. These boys will be assessed at a later stage when they are ready to swim. The Rowing boys will be allowed to select between two sporting combinations as per the combination block below. The weekly rotational sporting system will work as follows; there will be a blue week and a red week in which all boys will be divided into their groups. Once all boys from Grade 3 7 have selected their sporting codes during the first week of term 3, the class lists indicating the respective sporting codes that need to be attended in the red week and blue week will be posted on the sports notice board outside the sports office. A copy of the class lists will be given to the respective grade teachers which will be also be posted in their class rooms for boys to be reminded of what sporting code to attend during the week. The first integrated day time table week will start on Monday 17 September 2012 which will be the red week. Week 2 will start on Monday 24 September 2012 which will be the blue week. 12 AFTERNOON PRACTICE PROGRAMME POCILY AND PROCEDURES Grade 3 boys who will participate in cricket during the integrated day as well as afternoon practice sessions must purchase their own cricket kit which consists out of the following kit items; Helmet, cricket bat, gloves, pads, groin protector and cricket shoes or white trainers. Cricket balls will be provided by the School. At Preparatory School we encourage all Bennies boys to participate in the afternoon sporting program for their respective sporting codes. This will include attendance of all afternoon practice sessions, scheduled matches as well as Saturday sports fixtures. The afternoon sporting program at Preparatory School is not compulsory, but participation and commitment to the afternoon sporting programme will be encouraged to all boys from Grade 3 7 however, the no practice, no play policy will apply for all afternoon sports practices. It is very important for all boys from Grade 3 7 to attend all afternoon practice sessions to qualify for team selection in their respective afternoon sporting codes. If a boy cannot attend an afternoon practice session due to illness, injury or any medical condition, the master in charge of the respective sporting code must be notified with a doctor s letter or proper note written and signed by his parents. The following arrangement will apply for all Grade 3 boys participating in afternoon sporting activities; Grade 3 boys will always be fetched by their coaches from the Junior Preparatory School after School and walked across the road to their respective afternoon sporting activities. Parents must then please fetch their boys from the respective practice venue directly after the practice sessions as indicated in the weekly sports newsletter. It will be compulsory for all boys from Grade 5 7 who are interested in playing Water polo to also attend all afternoon swimming practices and commit to the Preparatory School swimming programme which includes attendance of all scheduled swimming galas. All boys from Grade 3 7 must adhere to the correct dress code standards at all afternoon practice sessions. All boys from Grade 3 7 must please be fetched by their parents from their respective training venue directly after the practice. Please note that Golf is an additional School sporting code which boys will not be able to select as one of their integrated day sporting codes. Rowing will be offered to Grade 6 & 7 boys only in term 3 as an introduction sporting code. Rowing practices will take place during the Integrated day sessions as well as afternoon sessions.
