He has won a batting award in the One-Day XI, and two bowling awards in the 4 th XI. In addition to his playing service, Paul has been a member of the club committee, and has served as Chairman of Selectors and part of the unofficial selection panel that oversaw the running of the One-Day XI. He has also been active in organisation of club social functions, and continues to enjoy his cricket at Union.. 6 6 WRIGHT EDLIN SHIELD This Perpetual Shield was created in recognition of the fantastic A-Grade Grand Final match between Bentleigh Methodists (now Bentleigh Uniting) and Brighton Union, and is played for every year by the highest-placed XIs from the two clubs. Having won six consecutive Premierships in the Brighton District Cricket Association, Brighton Union joined the stronger City of Moorabbin Cricket Association (CMCA) and was beaten by Bentleigh Methodists in the grand final after leading on the first innings in a game played in true sporting fashion. The late Wally Wright (Bentleigh Methodist) joined the club as first eleven scorer in 1950 and also scored for the juniors in the morning. He was confined to a wheelchair but despite this was active at both club level and the CMCA. Wally wore his club cap everywhere, had his wheelchair painted in the club s maroon and gold colours, and in 1962 the club presented him with a new wheelchair in acknowledgement of his contribution. The late Frank Edlin (Brighton Union) joined the club in 1936, and was deaf and dumb and thus nick-named dummy. He retired in 1958 due to illness. He played mainly in the seconds and thirds, also captained sides and had a remarkable ability to place fields and make bowling changes although he could not speak. Frank played 221 games, 199 of these consecutively, and made over 6,000 runs and took over 800 wickets, with his best bowling effort 8/44 and was Club Champion on three occasions. 7 7 PITT GOROZIDIS SHIELD The Pitt-Gorozidis Shield was donated by John Jones (East Sandringham) and Noel Pullen for annual matches between these two proud clubs. TheShield is named in honour of East Sandringham legend Kim Pitt and Brighton Union great Con Gorozidis, widely considered to be two of the outstanding players in CMCA history. It was first competed for in season Kim Pitt Arguably the CMCA s greatest ever cricketer, and certainly the most successful, Kim Pitt has played in a remarkable fourteen 1st XI premierships for his beloved Gold caps, four of them as captain. A great player in his own right, Kim won eight 1 st XI batting awards, seven 1 st XI bowling awards and was club champion 12 times at what has been a consistently strong club. His highest score was 138 v Carnegie South, and best bowling 7/38 v Brighton Union. Kim was a tough ruthless leader and a brilliant tactical captain, very astute in summing up situations and making the correct decisions. He more than any other person helped create the professionalism and winning culture that made East Sandringham Boys CC the envy of the rest of the competition in the past 30 years, and no doubt this legacy will live on. Con Gorozidis Con joined the club in 1974 as a 13 year old and from the earliest days was it was obvious he was an immensely talented player. At the age of 14 he displayed great maturity to steer the 4th XI to victory, scoring 80 in a grand final that was slipping away, and rapidly progressed to the 1st XI, where he soon became an automatic selection. An intimidating opening bowler, some of Con s greatest moments have been with the ball a marathon 9/140 off 54 overs in the grand final against arch-rivals East Sandringham (Union won by 2 runs) and 10/68 against Hampton United in a remarkable tied game in Throughout the season, he and Michael Cordwell were a devastating new-ball combination, taking a combined 100 wickets to virtually bowl Union to the premiership. His 630 1st XI wickets is the highest tally for the club that can be documented. As well as being a great bowler, Con has been a spectacular and prolific batsman. His six-hitting feats at Hurlingham Park are legendary, with some enormous hits sailing over 150 metres into the adjacent kindergarten and blocks of flats. His best year with the bat was , when he made 842 runs and took 38 wickets but was struck down with a serious knee injury at football training and missed out on playing in back-to-back premiership wins. In a great career Con has made 11 centuries in the 1st XI, scored over 10,500 1st XI runs (nearly double the next highest 1st XI runs scorer), and has played 328 1st XI games, easily a club record. A Life-member, 16 time Senior Club Champion, 5 times a premiership player, dual premiership captain/coach, winner of CMCA batting and bowling awards, 3 times winner of the Knights Sportsgoods Award as CMCA player of the year, the man known throughout the CMCA as The Champ has done it all. Club President Noel Pullen commented There will never be another one as good as him in the parks in a hundred years. Without doubt Con could have played cricket at first-class level had he wished. 8 8 Secretary s Annual Report for Season I present the 106 th Annual Report of the Brighton Union Cricket Club (incorporated). The committee underwent a major transformation at the AGM with Imad Amro succeeding Noel Pullen as President, and Cyril Campbell taking on the Vice- President s role. My thanks to all committee members for their efforts during the season. Special mention must go to the ever-cheerful Liz and Lynton Vaughan for their tireless efforts in the canteen, we very much appreciate it. I take this opportunity to thank Grady Patching (Colonial Leisure Group) and Peter Baker (manager at the Half Moon Hotel) for their fantastic support, a local organisation like ours is lucky to have such generous sponsors in the current difficult financial climate. After many years as Club patron and No.1 ticket holder, Bruce Thompson from Kookaburra has stepped down from this role, we thank Bruce for his 40 years of support to the club. Off-field the club ran a number of successful functions including a $1,000 draw, a poker night, and our end-of-season function at the Half Moon. Tony Grant did a power of work behind the scenes in organising our social events and ensuring they were well-promoted and attended. Our annual Bendigo Bank U-12 Lightning Premiership was an excellent day, with some good cricket played and useful income raised. Our thanks to Gary Scott (manager, Bendigo Bank, Elwood Branch) for sponsorsing the club juniors and coming along to present the trophies. My sincere thanks to Lynton and Liz Vaughan and Niki Gaal for their efforts on the day running the canteen. After a difficult season last year with our teams unable to use the main oval, it was a pleasure to have all our teams back home at Hurlingham. In the off-season the CMCA was kind enough to demote our 2 nd and 3 rd XIs to more appropriate grades, which permitted our members to play at a level where they could compete and win some matches. The coaching panel headed by Michael Cove and Ben Cairns provided a solid training program, and training numbers were an improvement on the previous year. As usual Simon Russell (practice assistant), Rob Robinson (1 st XI team manager) and Les Jason (1 st XI scorer) did a great job in their particular roles. Our playing stocks were depleted by defection of several players to other clubs, plus the usual swag of unavailables prior to Xmas. The 1 st XI managed to win 3 matches to avoid the relegation zone, and chasing down East Sandringham s 263 in Rd 6 was a great highlight. However we lost several matches we really should have won, and our lack of class bowlers consigned us to 10 th spot. The gap in ability between us and the top half of the field is significant, and the need to recruit some high-quality players is obvious and urgent. Hopefully we will see improvement in the younger players. James Martin injected some badly-needed fire into the pace attack, with a 4 wicket haul against Le Page Park hopefully a sign of things to come. Paul Foster s 2 nd XI started well but lacked the bowling fire-power to bother the top sides, losing the last 3 matches to finish 8 th. Byron Gardiner and Dave Martin shared the leadership role in the 3 rd XI, with that team winning 6 matches, but performances tailed off after Xmas and the side finished 9 th out of 14. Our youngsters in the 3rds did well, with 14 yo Matthew Vorbach and 15 yo Nathan Foster turning in some excellent efforts. John Hammer recruited a veterans team under the BUCC banner, which played on Sundays in the Over 60s Cricket Association. Several celebrity recruits including fomer Victorian cricketer and VFL football star Peter Bedford played in this side. Many thanks to Phil Hope for managing the team and entering their scores into MyCricket. On the junior front, the U-16s had a forgettable season, not winning a single match after being U-14A runners up last season. While the jump to U-16A is significant, we really should have done much better, and at times did show glimpses of what we could do against the top teams, making 179 against a star-studded Mackie side that won the flag. Team manager Ian Travers did a good job keeping the boys spirits up. The U-14s started the season with only 10 players but picked up a few recruits along the way, and many of the players improved considerably as the season progressed. It was a fine effort to reach the grand final, but unfortunately we put in a shocker with the bat and were outclassed by a more talented and experienced Elsternwick side. The U-12s started the season with 6 novices who had never played club cricket before. The boys exceeded all expectations to lose only one game in the home-and-away matches, but after defeating Brighton in the semi-final were narrowly defeated by them in the grand-final rematch. The boys made a few basic errors in the grand-final but tried hard and can very be proud of their efforts.

9 A number of our juniors reached Representative ranks, with Austin Heldt representing the U-14 Bayside Breakers, Tom Wallace, Matt Freeman, Nick Freeman and Will Hanlon playing for various Sub-District clubs in the U-15 RM Hatch Shield, and Joshy Paterson captaining the CMCA s U-12 Mitchell Shield team, which was successful in winning their tournament. We are hopeful of reinstating a 4 th XI next season but much will depend on the willingness of our senior members to make themselves available, particularly before Xmas. The club is at the cross-roads, so we need to attract as many new members as possible and obtain greater commitment from those people already at the club.
