4 President s Report I am delighted to present the President s Report for season at Brighton Union Cricket Club. The committee has continued the hard work of the previous season and has taken the club forward on and off field. Highlights included: Re-introduction of Milo In2Cricket with 65 participants Addition of another senior side (4) Three junior teams all making finals First Eleven making semi finals of Twenty/20 competition and Longmuir Shield Third Eleven making Grand Final Club hosting the Longmuir Shield final series Club in an improved financial position Growing network of long term club sponsors The elderly coach spent 15 minutes with me that day and I learnt in later years this was a well co-ordinated baptism that he used. The elderly man, Jack Vollugi, was instrumental in getting that mix of talented schoolmates to filter into the senior teams to provide club success in the 1980s and 90s. There is again a talented mix of juniors spending time at the Jack Vollugi nets who will be provided a pathway to improve their cricket and gain higher honours. There are members of our senior teams craving premiership success all supported by captains, coaches and committee whose aim is for BUCC to be again Facile Princeps. In closing, I would like to thank all sponsors, members and parents who have contributed generously to the club during the season. Your support is very much appreciated and has helped to put the club in a sound position moving forward. We look forward to the challenges of next season and we welcome any assistance that can contribute to the ongoing success and future of BRIGHTON UNION CRICKET CLUB. RUSSELL PURVIS President In the summer of 1971 I made my first connection with Brighton Union. Some of my older school mates were playing and one Sunday I made the graduation from backyard to Hurlingham Park. I was welcomed by the coach, an elderly man and given one pad and words of encouragement and told to face up to Cooky. Little did I know looking at this behemoth of a man in too tight shorts, pale white sunburnt skin and a walrus moustache that 10 years later I would play in the same teams as him. With a run up that started from the Highway he bustled in and despite my shaking knees managed to lay bat on ball. 4

5 During the season Nez Daou played his 300th game for the club, a feat only ever achieved by 8 other players in the history of the Brighton Union Cricket Club. The club marked the occasion with the presentation of a 300 game cap by club legend Con The Champ Gorozidis prior to the game, and a special function after the match where President Russell Purvis presented Nez with a framed photo tribute to his 300 games see a selection of photos on pages 32 and 33. Below, Nez reflects on his 300 and what the club means to him: It was with honour and very humbling to be recognised for playing my 300th game for this great club during the season just passed. It shows that any player with the right attitude, regardless of ability can make this milestone. It is no fluke that I have stayed at the same club I started with as a 16 year old, even after moving out of the area nearly 20 years ago. The club has always made me feel welcome from day one when I turned up as a raw kid who had never played a game of cricket in my life. With the assistance of the great man Jack Vollugi, I learnt to hold a bat and catch a ball with gloves on. The essence of this club is the loyal core of people who have been here since I started, without these people this club would not have been around for 107 years. Nezar Daou 300 Games We have had ups and downs over the journey, plenty of flags across all grades from 1st XI to 5th XI and even the One-Day grade when it existed. We have also had some very low points, which we have climbed out of even as recently as 3 years ago and this year is indicative of what a change of attitude can achieve as a club in a short time. I am as excited about turning up every Weekend as I was as a green 16 year old 27 years ago. Having tasted premiership success a couple of times, this is what we play for and we should all get behind our leaders and strive for more. NEZAR DAOU March 2014 Contents 1. 13 1st XI The Big Nez Diary Big Nez gives his own personal account of the 1st XI season: After a great win against Le Page Park in Round 8 the First XI were 3-5 and sitting 11th on the ladder (second bottom) still a sniff for a finals berth. We still gave ourselves a massive chance with 3 good wins in our last 3 games to play finals. Funnily enough the rest of the competition were talking about us avoiding relegation with that win. History tells us that we did win those last 3 games and finished 4th on the ladder. Disappointingly we were outplayed by Chelsea Heights in the final that we played. This season was no fluke!!!!! Starting back in August with our pre-season sessions in Springvale and Sunday sessions at Hurly. The numbers were unbelievable and not seen in pre-season for a while. The injection of Ben Cairns into the coaching group invigorated even the oldest of the group. The respect and the willingness to train and practice for each other was very evident. The pre-season trip to Narrandera was a chance to put this training into action and we swept all before us in beating them twice. The bonds developed on that trip cannot be under estimated. Sensational wins against Washington Park (in the top 4) and Le Page Park shows that the spirit and will to win is there. With young up and comers like Jackson Moffitt, Jackson McDonough, Nathan Plumridge, Matthew Northage, Brad Higgins and the experienced campaigners like Michael Cove, Stuart Bell, Stuart Scorgie, Cyril Campbell, Antony Stojko, Darian Kuzma and Brian McDonough we have the core to build a great Longmuir Shield team. With the influence of Ben Cairns as a coach and a mentor (and a sensational bowler), the future looks unbelievable. Just about every player has had a starring role this season, it will be scary when we put it all together at the same time. All I know is, that an old man is honoured and privileged and revitalised playing with this group of guys, who I now treat as my closest mates outside of family. Let's get behind our Captain Kuzzy and have faith that he is the man to take us back to finals again in NEZAR DAOU March 2014 An intra-club game also meant we got another 60 overs of valuable practice before round 1. A massive match was fixtured against Bentleigh Uniting in Round 1 at their ground on a Sunday with coloured gear and we were not embarrassed with a very good effort in narrowly losing. Although we were outplayed in a couple of games this year, we were a chance to win most games including heart breaking losses to Chelsea Heights, Carnegie South & Elwood. 13

29 U12 Bendigo Bank Lightning Premiership U12s Make Finals in Bendigo Bank Lightning Premiership played at Hurlingham Park The Brighton Union U12 team made it through to the finals of the Bendigo Bank Lightning Premiership played at Hurlingham. One of the day's main highlights was the performance of younger players who showed we'll have a strong U12 team in Senior players performed well and good team spirit was on display. Of note were: Sam Haddon and Wyatt Baker's opening partnership in the final game. Liam Kinsella and Sam Wagland's break out innings with Liam retiring on 15 and Sam making 10. Josh Clyne retired on 15 in two matches. Gab Strain-King made a 15. In the match against Cluden, Hunter Hare played two ramp shots with two other boundaries as he cruised to 14. The fielding was also a highlight: Elliott Paterson's direct hit from mid wicket and Sam Wagland took a firm catch from a skied ball. U12 Team before the day s play A major highlight was the stirring win in Match 2 against Cluden: With wickets falling rapidly towards the end of our 10 overs, Liam Kinsella joined Lukas Galanopoulos at the crease with 7 balls left but with 7 runs still required. Lukas showed admirable faith in Liam s ability to work the ball for singles, and Liam repaid the faith superbly. The scores were tied with one ball to come, and Lukas hit a four to seal the deal. All of the boys ran on to the field as one to congratulate the last pair! Had it not been for this most exciting climax, there would have been no finals for the Union team. Hot 38 degrees and windy morning saw the tent destroyed. Graeme Baker provided a strong tent in only 25 minutes. The team did well keeping cool and hydrated. Many thanks to Phil Arnold for organising the event and also to sponsors Bendigo Bank. Thanks also to the parents who contributed on the day. 31 A Century of Union Power The History of the Brighton Union Cricket Club written by Noel Pullen During the season Noel Pullen s book A Century of Union Power was launched at a special function in the clubrooms. The book which runs to 495 pages has proved hugely popular. The first print run sold out almost immediately and new copies are now available from Noel for $95 each noelpullen@yahoo.com.au. Noel also writes a regular feature on the club website Glancing Back which looks back at the memorable years in the club's history stretching back as far as 1883 when cricket was first played at Hurlingham Park by a club named Brighton Union.
