4 1st XI Captains Report What a contrast in comparison to last year. A good cricket team starts with a happy dressing room. The club worked extremely hard in the off season to bring in players that would not only be quality cricketers but enjoy each other s company. The season started for us in Echuca on preseason training camp, The men got to know most of their new team mates and the coaching staff and myself got understanding of the new group of talent. The fixture for the season was nothing like we had seen in the past. With 7 featured short form games and 7 2 day games it was going to be a very interesting season. The new players, Jarrad Dowling, Andrew King, Simon Andrews and Michael Jennings. We started the season against Mckinnon where Alex Caravalis scored his Maiden ton for the club, a fantastic innings that set the stage for his year. The first half of the season went really well, Strike bowlers Andrew King and Simon Andrews found a great rhythm bowling together and had taken 30 wickets between them to Christmas. We were undefeated for 7 rounds before the re-match vs Bonbeach we saw our first loss in a 1 day match at home. Our top order batsmen in Jarrad Dowling, Alex Caravalis, Tom Meredith and Greg Todd showed some great form all scoring multiple half centuries before Christmas. After Christmas we won a few tight games playing under maned but, the inconsistence in availabilities was putting extreme pressure on the group and it showed with losses to teams that would eventually be opponents in the finals. The second half of the year saw Mr consistent (Jarrad Dowling) continue his great run of form with a 96 against his old mob Hampton. With a season average of almost 40, it was a great introduction to his Bentleigh career. Tom Meredith also continued his early season form into the 2 nd half with scores against South Caulfield, Beaumaris and a suburb 140 against Murrumbeena. He earnt himself a spot as the wicketkeeper batsman in the team of year. A season average of 50 saw him carry the club batting trophy. New inclusion Michael ( the junkyard dog ) Jennings was consistent all year, playing without a genuine spinner saw Michael having to play a very defensive role in the middle overs, with a season economy rate of around 3 his medium pacers did their job and were an important part of the bowling structure. Andrew Simons, RGL winner, bowling award winner, showed the experience from 1 st class cricket all year. A no fuss old school cricketer, opened the bowling into the wind every week. Strike rate 23.5, eco 2.7 with 24 wickets. B e n t l e i g h C r i c k e t C l u b - A n n u a l R e p o r t / P a g e 19

5 Andrew King was our go to man. He bowled 160 overs and earnt himself a spot in the competition team of the year. Consistent performances from Chaminda Greg Todd gave us the extra depth needed to bowl teams out regularly. It was quite obvious that at the pointy end of the season lack of depth with batting and spin bowling cost us a spot in grand final. We played our first final in more than 5 years which is a great step towards a successful future. This year we had a number of debutants Sam Moustakis, Tim Mullane and Adam Rodda, who were all Bentleigh Juniors earnt there Baggy Blue and Alok Patel and James Badrock also earnt 1 st XI caps. Congrats to all the debutants. I would like to thank the committee and the coaching staff for the ongoing support over the past 2 seasons, we aim to take it to the next level in the up coming season and hold the flag once more. 11 2 nd XI Captains Report First of all I would like to thank our Executive and general committee for a great season off the field. Another year of hard work and dedication to the Bentleigh Cricket Club. Thanks to Russ Keyt, Mick Foot, Troy Gill, Steve Grogan and of course Rammer for all your hard work this year. Also thanks to coach Dave McNamara and Paul Dodge Evans for all their work and help throughout the year. After a few years with a very young side it had been hard to string together consistent performances and wins. This year I had a more balanced side with some older experienced cricketers mixed with some young kids. We had a dominant year winning all our 2-day games and only losing a 1-day and 20/20 game. And of course, winning the 1-day and 2-day Premierships. It was one of my most enjoyable years of cricket with the team playing great cricket, winning and still helping to bring through the younger guys. We saw Adam Rodda, Tim Mullane, Alok Patel and Sam Mouzakis play their first 1s games. Hopefully the first of many. Everyone performed and played their role throughout the year. We were challenged many times, but someone always stood up with either the bat, ball or in the field. A big thanks to all the guys that played with me throughout the year. Some special individual achievements throughout the season: A.Patel, 102 v Port Melbourne A.McInnes, 100 v Port Melbourne T.Gill, 110 n/o v Carnegie T.Gill, 119 n/o v Cheltenham B e n t l e i g h C r i c k e t C l u b - A n n u a l R e p o r t / P a g e 26

18 3rd XI Captains Report The 3rd XI season was definitely one of highs and lows. At our best, we defeated the eventual premiers on the eve of the finals and rolled McKinnon outright (including dismissing them for 25 in their second dig). In between times, however, we crashed back down to earth with a thud and you could say that the fate of our season in the end was very neatly summed up by the fate of Danger's (Paul Dangerfield) helmet (may it rest in peace) after a controversial lbw call in the last game. We did ourselves no favours along the way with some cringeworthy running between wickets that resulted in needless runouts and a few grassed chances that should have stuck; not to mention a lack of consistency with our bowling and a batting line-up that collapsed more frequently than Alan Bond's business interests. Despite all of this, there were a lot of positives to take from the season. By the end of the season, we had quite a few guys who were genuine 2nd XI players who just couldn't manage to snag a game due to the strength of the 2s. This gave the opportunity for a few guys to really show their class. Looking back at the scorecards throughout the season, it's clear we had the firepower to do some damage: Paul Dangerfield, Steve McGuiness, Dylan Velleman and Mike Levy all had a standout innings with the bat, but we just struggled to get a few guys to fire at the one time. We also had a great innings from Aido (Adrian Martin) in one of the T20 games that showed he should be a good player for us in future seasons. Dan Cooke was one of our UK imports and made a number of starts, looking a million bucks, but just struggled to push on to get a big score. Andrew Grove continued his emergence as a genuine all-rounder and showed us the way a number of times in terms of his application and the value he placed on his wicket. Marty Clements was a very handy contributor down the order and should continue to hold his own as a genuine batsman as his confidence in his own ability grows. Tim Mullane continued to show glimpses of his quality with the bat, but probably just needs a consistent season of playing on better quality tracks to really cement his confidence as a batsman of 1st XI quality in the future. Morgan Foot really hit his straps with the bat towards the end of the season, with a couple of knocks that showed he was really a class above, even if he was a bit unlucky not to convert them into really big scores. Clearly the standout with the bat was Harry Collins, who gave us the highlight of the year when he virtually carried his bat through the innings to make an unbeaten hundred against a quality bowling attack at Heatherton. B e n t l e i g h C r i c k e t C l u b - A n n u a l R e p o r t / P a g e 33

19 After a late start to the season, Marty Clements soon found his rhythm with the ball and was a standout bowler for us in a few games, before being called up to higher duties. That left a bit of a vacuum to be filled with the ball and Paul Dangerfield was handy when he didn't have the keeping gloves on. Dan Cooke and Mike Levy both had a couple of destructive spells through the season. Andrew Grove continued to take key wickets and cemented his reputation as the partnership breaker and Dylan Velleman turned in a classic spell against Monash to prove what he is capable of when he backs himself. The skipper proved correct all those whispers about being a total nutter by putting in a couple of spells of off spin during the season (the quality of which was described by one respected sports journalist as 'somewhere south of atrocious'). Nonetheless he managed to convince a couple of unfortunate batsmen to miss straight ones, as well as conjuring up a ball that turned about two feet both directions, took the edge and the catch of the season was then snared one-handed by Laren Guthrie, diving full stretch at short leg. Ben Clancy showed great promise for the future (and that he only operates at extremes) by taking a wicket with both the best and the worst balls of his career to date. We hope to see Ben charging in for us next year, hopefully taking the new pill with his old man (who maybe will pop a few pills of another kind to get a few more seasons out of his battered shoulder!) and look forward to seeing some young guys like him step up to take the 3s to the next level in 2017/18. 25 4 th XI Captains Report Firstly, I would like to thank the BCC committee for allowing me the opportunity to captain the 4 th XI this season. I would also like to thank Steve Booth for filling in as captain during the year when I was unable to play. The season itself started very well until we suffered our first defeat in round 7, the season consisted of 20 games we won 11 of these had 3 draws (due to weather ) and 6 losses to finish the minor round in 3 rd place. We managed to play in the semi-final against Clayton Districts although unsuccessful on the day it has been a great pleasure captaining a great group of people and the team results showed what can happen when we all play our best cricket. The 4 th XI had 41 players during the season and the major challenge faced was ensuring everyone was given an opportunity in the games that they played, rotating players into different roles was an option to ensure we got the best out of them. I would also like to thank everyone who managed to play on the Saturday and then again on Sunday to help out. The addition of James Jesson and Jake Spain, along with the contribution and the development of the junior cricketers strengthened the team. The experience the junior cricketers would have gained by playing turf cricket weekly would make Bentleigh a destination club for the area. Some of the contributions from these juniors include Adrian Martin (56), Jordan Evans (58) and we also had valuable contributions with the bat from Jackson Forster, Tully Foot and Luke Mott during the season The team had some other wonderful individual contributions during the season with both bat and ball. With the bat we had Adam Wakeling making 400 plus runs including making 100no against Monash University in round 11, James Jesson making 300 plus runs including 55 in round 4, 72 in round 8 and 76 in the semi-final, Steve Booth making 250 plus including 52no in round 4 and 95 in round 5 and Adrian Martin making over 200 runs. We also had many other contributions during the season with 14 half centuries being compiled, other notables include James Badrock making 93no in round 6 and 56 in round 7, Sam Mouzakis making 76 in round 7 and Harry Collins making 82 in round 8. With the ball we had David McNamara taking 5 for 18 against East Malvern Tooronga in round 6, we also had numerous bowling performances of 4-for from Bhavin Patel, Sam Mouzakis, Daniel Cooke and James Jesson. Congratulations to the award winners (James Jesson batting award and Dave McNamara bowling award) on a great season and thank you to all players that I played with this year and to the club. 30 Masters Captains Report This year it was my honour to again Captain a Bentleigh Cricket Club side in the newly formed Masters Cricket competition within Cricket Southern Bayside. Playing, captaining even walking out to bat at our home ground in competition was something I didn t think I would ever experience again, but after putting on the whites I found myself really enjoying the experience. The Masters competition has been designed for players such as myself who are a little older and can t commit to cricket every week. The masters team took the field once a month, playing other teams in the local area. Although a little rusty with the ball and in the field we managed to finish runners up for the year (no finals in masters ladder position dictates the premiers). I would like to take to opportunity to thank all the past players that took up the invitation to play this season. It was some of the most enjoyable cricket I ve played. Lots of laughs, many tall stories and even a flash back or two of our past glory on the field. Our batting was a standout this season. Craig Robinson, Jon Raju and Gerard McBurney all looked like they could still comfortably play senior cricket at a high level. Aron Van Staden, Michael Rogers and Jimmy Raju all did a good job with the ball, while the rest of us worked as hard as a could in the field. What I m most proud of is that the BCC put out a team of returning players. Most teams we played had 7 or 8 current senior players doubling up for the Masters comp, whilst Bentleigh didn t need to field any. In the third round of the comp, we fielded 7 life members in the one team. I would like to take this chance to thanks the Executive Committee for all their hard work in what has been an extremely difficult year. In particular, congratulations to Russ Keyt for stepping into the biggest of shoes. Well done mate. I look forward to running around with all my old cricketing mates again next year and being a board member of Cricket Southern Bayside it is my intention to continue to grow not just the Masters Comp, but all levels of the competitions within Cricket Southern Bayside. Thank you. Paul Glew Captain CSB Masters Bentleigh Cricket Club B e n t l e i g h C r i c k e t C l u b - A n n u a l R e p o r t / P a g e 45
