Lydia Erdman skated to a personal best/season s best of in Juvenile Ladies Group D earning a 3 rd place in her group. She received a USFSA Special Achievement Award for at least one +2 GOE in her program scores. She went on to place 19 th in the final round. Caroline Sterman skated to a personal best/season s best of in Juvenile Ladies Group F placing 5 th in her group. She received a USFSA Special Achievement Award for at least one +2 GOE in her program scores. She also received the USFSA Special Achievement Award for the most total points for spins in her group. A huge, noisy group of cheering friends, families and coaches were on hand to see Ashley Ferguson finish her competitive skating career in the Senior Ladies event.

4 Despite dealing with an obvious injury a smiling Ashley skated with the determination, strength and grace that she has always shown. She finished 10 th in the Short Program and 11 th in the Long Program for a final result of 11 th place. It was a proud and emotional moment for everyone there to be a part of. The club was also represented by Coaches Slava Uchitel and Tommy Kaine and club members/usfsa officials Ann O Keefe and Jim Kawano. Great job by everyone from PSC&HS! Do you know who the current President of PSCHS is? Answer: Charlotte Martin Charlotte was Secretary last year and has been Adult Chair for many years. As Adult Committee Chair, she ran the January Blues Brunch, kept adults informed of events, helped bring back the Club Adult Pro-Am Competition, invented the very popular First Friday Lunches, made delicious soups, and donated her beautiful pottery for Club events such as the annual Silent Auction for the Competitors Fund. She s also been active with Membership marketing, served on Membership Admissions, and been an elected Board member. She was the Club s first Volunteer of the Year in Besides being a potter and teacher of pottery making, Charlotte is a pre-silver ice dancer and skates figures. She began skating when her daughters stopped skating. Her goals for the year are fund-raising and increasing membership. Philly Spirit Adult Synchro The adult synchro team is looking forward to a great season with our new vampire/zombie program. We had a fun '80's night practice session recently, and look forward to our first competition in Connecticut in Dec. We would really appreciate the support of our fellow club members. How can we help support the team, you might ask? There are several ways: 1. Join us! A big part of synchro is numbers, the more skaters we have, the more successful the team. 2. Purchase a "Tasty Skates" cookbook. They are available in the club office for $15 each. they make great holiday gifts for teachers, coaches, etc. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this book go toward team needs. 3. Advertise for us (& the Jr. team) by sporting our logo. The more the skating community knows about us, the more likely we are to attract new members. We have team pins available for $5, team jackets for $75, and team t-shirts will be available soon. Not only will 100% of the proceeds from these sales also go directly to team needs, it will also help us get our name out there. Contact Janet Rosen, jrosen1@comcast.net or We thank you in advance for your support of synchronized skating at PSCHS.

How well do you know the Club? What is the Club s anniversary? A) Feb. 28 B) Dec. 21 C) Neither of these D) Both of these Answer at end of TWIST! FAQ from the General Manager, Fran Mycek Why are ice conditions not perfect after a heavy skating session? When you have a session with a large number of dancers and free skaters, the ice tends to get beat up with rivets from the ice dancers and holes from the free skaters. In a perfect world, after a heavy session of skaters dancing and jumping, a double ice cut would be the cure. Unfortunately, we only have 15 minutes to try to bring the ice back into shape. On Friday evenings, after a heavy public session, the staff does a dry cut first and then a cut with water. This can take minutes to do the job right and bring the ice up to par. I do suggest that skaters wait until the ice is completely dry and allow the ice to heal a bit before getting onto the ice. There is no easy solution other than a 30 minute ice cut allowance. On another note, we re very fortunate to have a lot of skaters on the ice!!

6 MEMBER/GUEST SUNDAYS ARE BACK! Mark your calendar for the following Sundays and bring your prospective member candidates to PSC&HS for an afternoon of skating. These are perfect opportunities to introduce that person who might be interested in skating to PSC&HS. MEMBER/GUEST Sundays allow you to bring prospective members to a family session (1:00-3:00 pm) with no guest fees or skate rental charges. Please be sure to RSVP in advance with the number of skaters you will be bringing. All members and guests will be expected to signin upon arrival. 7 FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SKATING The following information is for all skaters and the parents: Proper Procedures for Changing Coaches Following these steps will help you make the switch to a new coach and still maintain a comfortable relationship within the rink. Parents: 1) Contact your current coach and express your reasons for wanting to switch to another coach. There may be a way to correct the situation and the need to switch could be resolved before a change is necessary. 2) Make sure that you have paid your account balance in full with your current coach. 3) Discuss this change with your child. Make sure that he/she is comfortable with the changes you are about to make. Future Coach: 1) Direct the client to first make contact with the former coach. 2) When this has been done, contact the current coach. Make sure there is no possible resolution to the situation. 3) Confirm that all outstanding balances are paid in full with the current coach prior to scheduling any lessons. NO lessons should be given prior to receiving confirmation of account status. There are often exceptions and discrepancies. These need to be handled on a case by case basis. 4) Respect what the former coach has done for the skater. If technique changes need to be made, do so without degrading the former coach's method. 5) Support your fellow coaches. Staff meetings are helpful to discuss these procedures and numerous other topics related to a happy and successful environment within the rink. Skaters: 1) Switching coaches, if the above procedures are followed, it should not affect the skater's relationship with other skaters (except regarding working in groups). 2) Do not isolate or make an outcast of a skater who has switched from your coach to another coach. 3) Do not encourage others to switch from their current coach. 4) Treat all skaters with equal respect. 5) While on the ice everyone must follow the same set of rules. Thank you from the Competitors Fund Many thanks to all who supported this year's PSCHS Competitors Fund Silent Auction! Your donations of gifts in kind and/or successful bidding was very much appreciated and helped us raise over $1500! A special thank you to each of our coaches who donated generously of their time and talent. Answer to Test Yourself Question: D, Both of these On December 21, 1849 a group of gentlemen who enjoyed skating on the frozen rivers and lakes of Philadelphia launched the first skating club in North America and called it, The Skater s Club of the City and County of Philadelphia. On February 28, 1861, by special act of the General Assembly, approved by the Governor, the SCCP became the Philadelphia Skating Club and Humane Society and acquired a charter of incorporation. Don t forget to turn your clocks back on November 4 2 am!

8 From the Adult Committee Chair (Carolyn Rhodes) You might be surprised by the number of members who learned to skate as adults and have gone on to pass moves in the field, free skate, and dance tests. Some even compete. Come to any adult session you ll see them working on dance patterns, moves, and jumps and spins. Some started because they wanted to be comfortable skating with their kids. Others wanted to try a new sport. But they all have one thing in common they didn t start as kids. Many of them started with group lessons. Group skating is fun and supportive and the club offers classes at no charge for beginners (Ice Breakers), advanced skaters (Stroking), and even dance. If you become hooked, you might decide to work with a coach and even think about tests. Why test as an adult? As one skater told me, It s a great way to set goals. The United States Figure Skating Adult Program offers an adult test track that has four levels pre bronze, bronze, silver, and gold across all disciplines. Tests are given at the club once a month. Each test includes a set of requirements that are skated in front of a panel of judges. Pass a test and you qualify to move to the next level and participate in adult competitions and events. Next month I ll introduce you to adult skaters who have done just that. See you on the ice!
