For use by Swiss International Schools Booklet created by michelle smith INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF GENEVA English version
The INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF GENEVA 2 COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME Dear Colleagues Thank you for your interest in the Competitive Artistic Gymnastics Programme. My aim is to develop Artistic Gymnastics throughout Switzerland s International Schools and create a friendly platform for our students to perform their gymnastic skills in an inclusive competitive environment. This booklet has been created in order to offer a standardised programme for the inclusive competitive platform of Artistic Gymnastics, to grow across all International Schools in Switzerland, encouraging others to confidently host competitions in their Schools. It aims to be progressive in its content, leading into the Swiss Artistic Gymnastics Federation s standards, where possible. This booklet is designed to offer guidance for competitions, as well as encourage skill development in our gymnasts. I very much hope that you find this booklet useful. Michelle Smith Teacher of Physical Education, International School of Geneva Gymnastics Head Coach
COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS COMPETITION RULES Apparatus The following apparatus will be available. Gymnasts will be required to choose their apparatus, under the guidance of their coach: A- Symmetric Bars (high bar height and distance between bars adjustable) Matted Floor Area (12 meter sprung floor strip) High Beam (set at approx. 110cm) Vault (adjustable height requirements) ü A springboard will be available for use for mounting the bars and the beam. ü A mini trampoline will accompany the vault. ü Matted areas & practice beams will be available for gymnasts to warm up and prepare.
COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS COMPETITION RULES Performers & Coaches The competition consists of purely individual performances. Gymnasts should enter the level appropriate to their ability. Coaches are responsible for ensuring that gymnasts level is accurately considered and that gymnasts being entered into levels too simple, in order to achieve greater success, is not encouraged. Gymnasts who are / have competed at local club level or above must be entered into level 4. This includes any gymnast whose training outside of school gymnastics exceeds 4 hours per week. Gymnasts who do not compete for an outside club are still permitted to enter level 4. Gymnasts will be competing per piece of apparatus. They do not have to perform on each piece of apparatus, however there will be an Overall Individual Title awarded for the highest combined score, per level, if they enter all 4 apparatus. Gymnasts must perform in the same level on each piece of apparatus. Gymnasts may not remove or add skills within the levels / sequences. Compulsory sequences will soon be available in video format, for ensuring consistency across schools, streamlining judging and eliminating the need for individual interpretation. Coaches are not permitted to physically support gymnasts, however coaches are permitted to shadow gymnasts, without making contact with the student, if absolutely necessary. Providing no contact is made, gymnasts will not be penalised. If contact is made, 1 full mark will be deducted. Gymnasts will be offered adequate warm up and practice time. Once the competition starts gymnasts must sit quietly, on the benches provided, whilst waiting (before and after they have competed). They must not disrupt others performances. They must not leave the apparatus until the end of that rotation. Gymnasts are required to wear appropriate clothing that allows for their movements to be clearly seen. Shorts and T- shirt are accepted, if leotards are not available. Coaches are responsible for their gymnasts and spectators throughout the competition. A qualified first aider will be available throughout the competition.
COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS COMPETITION RULES Judging & Scoring All of the judges used will be impartial and fully qualified. There will be 1 judge per apparatus, plus one assistant. Each judge will remain on the same apparatus to ensure consistency in the marking of all gymnasts and will be provided with the scoring criteria prior to the competition. Scores will not be displayed at the end of each performance. Each performance will be marked out of 11 (which includes 2 available bonus marks per apparatus entry). Criteria can be seen later in this booklet. There will be a 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd place given for each level, within each piece of apparatus. There will be an overall 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd place given for each level (scores combined on all 4 pieces of apparatus). There will be a title awarded to the school gaining the highest score (every score gained by each gymnast, divided between the number of total scores added for that school). The school must enter at least 15 gymnasts to qualify for the schools title and must compete on a variety of apparatus. The judges will instruct gymnasts when they should commence their performance by a show of hand. Gymnasts should be ready as soon as the judge is ready, with their competitor number clearly shown. Failure to do this will result in 2 full marks being deducted. Unless Judges have been offered a clear visual reference, that each school has worked from, they should allow for individual school/coach/gymnast interpretation. Gymnasts must not be deducted marks if a skill is interpreted in a different way to another school.
COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS COMPETITION RULES Spectators / Observation Spectators are welcome and encouraged to support the competition. Filming of gymnasts is prohibited. Any photographs taken by official photographers will not be published outside of the school community. Each school is permitted to have ONE official photographer on the competition floor. All other spectators must be in the spectator areas provided. The use of the photographs taken by the official photographer is at the discretion of each school, within their official school guidelines. The use of flash should be limited to a minimum, in order to avoid distraction. If it is necessary to use a flash this must not be aimed at the gymnasts front as it may momentarily hinder their sight.
7 COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS Registration COMPETITION RULES The competition season will commence with a competition at ISG on Saturday 14 th December Coaches must register their gymnasts for the competition using the official registration form (within this booklet). There is no maximum number of entrants. Each participant can compete in all of the events, if they wish. Final registrations must be received by FRIDAY 29 th November Changes will not be accepted after this date. All registrations should be submitted for the attention of : Mrs Michelle SMITH michelle.smith@ecolint.ch Physical Education Department International School of Geneva 62 Rue de Chene 1208 Geneve
COMPETITIVE GYMNASTICS PROGRAMME REGULATED COMPETITION LEVELS COMPETITION RULES Results & Prize Giving Ceremony All gymnasts are required to stay for the entire competition and for the results and prize giving ceremony. The results and prize giving will be held shortly after the final rotation of performances. Medals and trophies will be awarded for individual performances and cumulative scores will be added for qualifying school totals. Rotations will follow a schedule that will be given to each of the coaches on the day of the competition. Groupings will be given with the rotation schedule. There will be 5 rotations, one of which will be a rest rotation, allowing gymnasts time to purchase refreshments. There will be no scheduled lunch break.

There will be a short break in between each rotation of apparatus, where gymnasts can eat, drink and use the toilet. A rest rotation will also be included. The gymnasts are advised to eat and drink a little during each break to avoid overeating or getting hungry. There will be no designated lunch break to avoid students overeating and hindering their performance after eating, as well as to keep the timing of the day down. There will be a small selection of snacks available to purchase, however gymnasts should bring their own refreshments. Coaches should ensure that gymnasts are instructed to bring sufficient refreshments.
