W' handstamp (#C30; ERD), rated "7d" for carriage between 30 & 50 miles, GPO transit d/s, various British markings including boxed 'INDIA LETTER/DEAL' & rated "1/-" for an inwards packet letter.

1841 cover to England with very fine strikes of the oval 'YASS' datestamp (unusually on the face) & rounded-boxed 'YASS/POST PAID' h/s in red, soiled and a bit fragile but still attractive.

[Interesting content: "...has taken the labour of the Convict population from the Settlers, and under the present probation system the prisoners are all let lose [sic] and walk about with a slip of paper called a pass and hiring themselves at not less than nine...pounds a year...our present Governor is marrying the men and women by hundreds at a time...nothing can be worse than the conditions of this Colony..."] C B Lot entire signed "HDowling" to the Cape of Good hope rated "4" in red & endorsed "paid" with 'LAUNCESTON/4NO4/1852' cds, tiny temperance tract affixed across the flap (sadly damaged on opening), untidy inwards rate marking, some internal reinforcing/repairs. An unusual destination in this period. [Henry Dowling was a Baptist minister at Launceston & an ardent advocate of teetotalism. Ex J Edgar Williams. A rare item: there were no missionary letters in Ed Williams' main collection. Fitzpatrick & Boulangier each had one earlier. Jensen's earliest was from [Rev Aaron (?) Busacott or "Buzacott" translated the Bible into the Rarotongan language, and was apparently quite a craftsman. He writes to Nisbet "We forward you your sofa...it is superior to any we have hitherto made, & consequently the price is higher..."] FRENCH POLYNESIA - Postal History 800T 611 C B Lot brief entire headed "South Seas Tahaa Nov 8th 1824" & signed "Robert Bourne" with fine 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/1SE1/1825/LONDON' cds on the face & arrival b/s in red, rated "8" as an incoming shipletter. Ex Hilton Israelsohn. A remarkably early missionary letter from the South Seas & noted by Beslu as being the earliest recorded letter from Tahiti. [The letter took 299 days to arrive in London. The absence of a Sydney transit indicates likely carriage via Chile & around Cape Horn. This & the next 6 lots include a copy of Israelsohn's article "The Early Posts of Polynesia" in which he notes that British, not French, missionaries who arrived in the early-1800s were the first European settlers. NB: The earliest of Brian Peace's 6 pre-stamp items from Polynesia was dated 1841, fully 17 years after this item] 2,000T 612 C B Lot brief entire headed "Janry /Huahine" & signed "Chas Banff" with fine '[crown]/general POST OFFICE/18AP18/1833/SYDNEY' datestamp on the face, equally fine 'India Letter/Gravesend' b/s across the flap & London arrival b/s in red. [After his service in Polynesia, George Charter went to Sydney where he continued his religious work, in 1855 becoming the first minister of the Wollongong Congregational Church] C B Lot brief entire headed "Tahiti April 28th 1846" & signed "G[eorge] Stallworthy" with fine 'PAID SHIP LETTER/AU*19/1846/SYDNEY' datestamp in red on the face & rated "3" in red for outgoing shipletter, poor but discernible Calcutta transit & London arrival b/s both in red, rated "2/2" payable by the addressee, some staining within does not affect the fine external appearance. A very later English missionary letter. [The period was one of bitter rivalry. In 1843, the French outraged the British when they took formal possession of Tahiti. By the end of 1846 all the British missionaries had departed] 500T 615 C B Lot (Aug 22) entire headed "Papeite" to France with good strike of the rare double-circle 'PAPEITI/TAITI' cds, various French markings includng '9' (decimes) h/s for postage payable by the addressee, minor blemishes. [From a French marine to his father. Probably carried by British vessel to Valparaiso, then around Cape Horn to Calais.
