Census #37. Departed Albany 30/4/1871 per "Rangoon"; Galle per "Mooltan" 17/5; & Alexandria per "Pera" 4/6; arriving Southampton 17/6/1871. [With the green enclosure signed "George Bell" to his son "...I hope that I shall soon be away from this cursed place". Bell was transported for life for "attempted poisoning"(!) & arrived 21/11/1858 on the "Edwin Fox"; received his ticket-of-leave 31/3/1862; conditional pardon 2/5/1867] L B Lot 171 PERTH: 1884 (Feb 15) letter headed "Perth/Western Australia" & signed "OJ Knight" with embossed crest of HMS "Harrier" in grey, minor blemishes. "Harrier" was attached to the Australian Station between September 1883 & early 1888 when it was sold to the London Missionary Society at Sydney. Stated to be one of only two sailor's letters from Western Australia "in this period": recorded by Haynes & Pope at page 215. [The writer states "We left Zanzibar on the 20th Dec with HMS Osprey & Undine...called at Mozambique...We are to remain here 14 days then proceed to Melbourne...". Census #3. An important cover: the rate to GB was reduced to 2½d on 1/1/1891 but this cover shows that the registration fee was not reduced from 4d to 3d at the same date as was once believed. Ex Gartner. This was the first incident involving Australian mail to which a wreck cachet was applied. Carried per "Bombay" departed Albany 2/11/1862 for Galle. The "Colombo" was wrecked off Minicoy Island in the Laccadives on 19/11/1862. This item was put aboard "Nemesis" or "Ottawa" direct to Suez, then per "Massilia" from Alexandria 16/12/1862, arrived Southampton 30/12/1862: see also Lot , C A- Lot 178 ALBANY: 1867 (Nov 4) yellow cover to Massachusetts "via England" with scarce franking of Perf 12½ 2d yellow & 1/- sage-green SG 55 & 62 tied by 15-bar '6', Albany cds at lower-left, London transit cds in red, mss "8d" in red & "5" in blue + '16/CENTS' in red & 'BOSTON AM PKT/ 5 ' postage due handstamps, very minor blemishes. Carried per "Avoca", "Simla" & "Nyanza" to GB, then per Inman Line "City of Paris". Census #30. [On 1/3/1870 the rate was reduced from 1/2d] 2, C B Lot 181 ALBANY: 1870 (Dec 12) cover to Edinburgh "Via Brindisi" with rare franking of Perf 12½ 1d bistre & 1/- bright green SG 52 & 61, 15-bar '6' & Albany cds at lower-left, 'PRESTONPANS' arrival b/s, the 1/- was folded over the top of the cover from which the flap has been removed & the fold opened-out, docketed "Melbourne/6 Decr 70". Census #31. An important cover: believed to be the only 1/1d rate cover from Western Australia. Carried per "Avoca" 12/12/1870; "Candia" from Galle 28/12/1870; & "Delta" from Alexandria 14/1/1871; arrived Brindisi 18/1/1871. Because of the Franco-Prussian War, the via Marseilles route was closed on 13/9/1870. Between -/11/1870 and -/12/1871 the via Brinidisi mails were carried via Verona, Munich, Mainz, Cologne & Ostende. The 13d rate was announced in London on 19/10/1870 & advice received in Australia late in -/11/ , C A- Lot 182 ALBANY: 1872 (July 25) mourning cover to Scotland "Via Brindisi" with Perf 12½ 4d carmine (defective) & 6d violet SG 56 & 57 tied by 15-bar '6' cancels, Albany cds at lower-left, Edinburgh arrival b/s, minor blemishes. [By the third quarter of 1895 there was a critical shortage of ½d stamps, causing the issue on 21/11/95 of the 'Half-penny' on 3d Surcharges.
