3 Nov 14, 2014 Prestige Philately- Public Auction South Australia Page: C B Lot entire to "Allan Water [?]/near Geelong/Victoria" with GPO cds of DE30/1854 but unpaid & with very fine 'RETURNED FOR POSTAGE' handstamp, manuscript endorsement on the reverse "Came from Platts'/Receiving House/[initials]" presumably added at the GPO, then with 'PAID/2JA/1855/ADELAIDE SA' cds in red, oval 'GEELONG/JA*8/1855/VICTORIA' arrival b/s, a bit soiled & a couple of repaired opening tears that just intrude on the red cds. A truly marvellous inter-colonial prestamp item that could have had the postage paid with a pair of the London Printing 2d issued one day earlier on 1/1/1855. Illustrated in PSSA at Adelaide page 24. The lengthy letter is headed "Monalto 29 Dec 54" & signed "John Baker" who writes about his son "little George...the poralysis continues in his legs & the lower part of his body his bladder etc..." C A- Lot entire with London Printing 6d blue SG 3 (margins just clear to large) tied by fine '27' cancel, 24mm unframed 'KAPUNDA/NO17/1856/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA=' cds (rated RR) alongside & straight-line 'REGISTERED No' h/s at left, GPO arrival b/s, a 2d stamp has been removed at upper-right. [Letter signed "Thos Padman" states "Money is very scarce but everyone says he has more work than he can do..."] The writer was Thomas Padman the Younger, writing to his father who had acquired and renamed the local branch of Hobart ironmongers Dickinson & Son. In 1893, Padman Snr died on an Adelaide tram, his obituary stating that "...it was decided to continue the journey...as the tram contained a number of business men who were anxious to reach their offices..."!

Excellent combination of a rare franking & an unusual transit. The arrival b/s indicates carriage per "Mongolia" to Galle, "Bokhara" to Alexandria & "Pera" to Brindisi. However, "Mongolia" departed Adelaide 29/1/1886 & left Albany before the letter was even posted in Adelaide, so a supplementary mail is not an option. Either the duplex was dated 'FE' instead of 'JA', in error - considered highly unlikely - or carriage was per private ship C A Lot cover to "Mr Justice Scott/High Court/Bombay" with 6d ultramarine tied by largely fine 'KNIGHTSBRIDGE/SA' cds (rated RR), 'BOMBAY/INW', 'THIRD DELY/BOMBAY' & 'MALABARHILL/THIRD DELY' backstamps. A very scarce destination.
