[Covers at this rate are only occasionally encountered. Pre c.1832, all Sydney rate markings were usually in black] 1851 part-entire to Tasmania endorsed "Overland August 15th 1851/p Steamer from Melbourne/to Launceston" with 'PAID/[crown]/SYDNEY' cds (#P7) in red, rated "5" in red being 2d local postage + 3d shipletter fee, 'MELBOURNE/ PORT PHILLIP' transit b/s in blue & 'LAUNCESTON/1SP1/1851' arrival b/s where rated "4" in black for an inwards shipletter. [The writer states "The Overland Mail from Melbourne has lately been so irregular..." and "...I fully expect the Town will be but thinly peopled. Specialists distinguish between "early", "intermediate" and "late" or "worn" impressions. However, as can be seen from this block, all can occur on the same sheet! The third unit is a very fine "early" impression which, because of the fine lines & clear design, also appears to be of a brighter shade. The last unit can be considered as an "intermediate" impression, with clear evidence of wear. A major and dramatic variety. [This may be the only example recorded that is not cancelled at Hobart] Pictorials mostly mint array of ½d 2d & 'ONE PENNY' on 2d with many blocks, watermark & perforation varieties including Compound and Mixed Perfs, some blocks are plated, condition a bit variable but generally fine to very fine. TASMANIA - Postal History C A- Lot Wesleyan missionary outer to London rated "3" in red, British boxed 'INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH' h/s & rated "1/-" (4d inwards shipletter + 8d mileage), London arrival b/s of 3JY3/1833 in red, docketed on the reverse "Macquarie Harbour/Dec /John Manton/State of the works...", unusually fine for such items. An important item for the collector of convict-related mail, being the later of only two Macquarie Harbour covers in private hands. Carried to Hobart per the Government brig "Tamar; and to England per "Katherine Stewart Forbes", departed 11/2/1833, arrived Portsmouth 2/7/1833. [Examples of the 3d rate that operated only between 17/5/1832 & 1834 are rare. NB: Between April 1832 & May 1837, no postal markings were used at Hobart. John Allen Manton succeeded Rev William Schofield at Macquarie in 1830, and was the first chaplain at Port Arthur] Macquarie Harbour was an infamous convict station for "irreclaimables" on the west coast. Known colloquially as "Hell's Gates", escape was considered impossible. One group that attempted the impossible suffered such hardship that they resorted to cannibalism: the two who made it back to Macquarie Harbour died from the impact of their ordeal. The convict station operated from 1822 until 1833, when all the inmates were transferred to the newly established, and somewhat more civilised, Port Arthur. 6,000T 182 C B Lot cover to England with rare franking of Courier 1d pale blue SG 3 strip of 4 - margins close to good except at the base of the second unit where just touched, ironed-out horizontal crease as a result of the stamps being folded over the top of the envelope - tied by several poor to fine strikes of BN '64' used at Hobart, 34mm GPO cds in red below, octagonal '25JY1855/LIVERPOOL/SHIP' d/s in green on the reverse, rated "8" (h/s?) in black for an inwards shipletter, poor Warwick arrival b/s in green. [In the March 1999 issue of "The Australian Journal of Philately", Dr Geoff Kellow RDP published a census of the 1d Courier on cover. As a result of two updates in the same year, he accounted for a total of only 22 covers/outers or entires bearing Tasmania's first stamp. This cover is not recorded in Dr Kellow's census, where he listed only three shipletter covers, each with 1d x4. Remarkably, this is the only one of the four going to England] 4,000

7 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 7 TASMANIA - The First Allocation of Barred Numerals Period The items in this section are from the Gold Medal exhibit dealing with all the postal markings of the First Allocation Numerals Period formed by David McNamee from California. These cancellers were introduced in November 1853 to coincide with the issue of the "Courier" stamps. They were replaced in February-March 1861 by the Second Alllocation Barred Numerals, although some later usages are known. Naturally, any numeral usage before March 1861 must be from the First Allocation. The collection also includes manuscript cancellations - town names, numerals, cross-hatchings etc - and endorsements of the office name by the postmaster, usually at the left of a cover. Rarity Ratings are as per an article by Randall Askeland at pages of "The Courier" (June 2000), the journal of the Tasmanian Philatelic Society. To obtain a copy, secretary@tps.org.au The stamps are Numeral Watermark Chalons, unless otherwise specified. Ex Lot SDC The balance of the collection scattered through the heavily annotated exhibit pages with Barred Numerals including '10' (faint on 1857 cover, rated RRR), '13' (faint, on 1855 cover), '21' (poor, rated RRR), '25' (RR), '26', '28' (RR), '31' (poor, on 1855 cover), '37' (RR), '42' (RRR), '59' (on 1855 front) & '68' (on 1855 cover to Geelong); manuscript numerals including "14" (RRRR), "15" (light, RRRR), "31" (on 1859 cover endorsed "Greenponds"), "54" (messy, RRR), "55" (RR) & "57" (RR); manuscript names including "[Ki]ngston" (RR) & a couple out-of-period; also manuscript lines (on 1860 cover endorsed "Richmond", RRR), segmented-circle of Macquarie Plains (RRR), Melbourne '1' tying Tas 4d to 1856 cover, and a page of late usages of First Allocation Numerals '27' '50' & '57' all on Pictorials. The condition of both the material and the strikes is very mixed but this is nonetheless a handy basis for reforming a collection. Ex Enrico Bombieri & David Cohen: acquired for 437. [The addressee, William Race Allison, was an early explorer of the Gordon River Wilderness. He was appointed to the Legislative Council, and was among the first elected members of the Legislative Assembly. Rare. [NB: The obliterator was introduced in January 1861 & the Second Allocation Numerals in the first week of March. Usage such as this could thus occur only within that brief time period. In the Second Allocation, Brighton was Number 10. The stamps were re-cancelled because the red manuscript was difficult to see] 200T

Ex John Cress: acquired for $690. [In this period, the Post Office didn't provide datestamps to any "country" post office. [The lengthy contents is an invoice for 6 months of supplies from the Campbell Town storekeeper, J Brickhill, for a total of 58/16/7½d. Rated RRRR: the only recorded strikes. [In this period, the USA is a most unusual destination from Tasmania. The cover is illustrated in the "Handbook" Vol I opposite page 61] Birch's Bay opened as a Receiving House on 1/12/1853 and it has long been thought that '67' was used there. However, research by our vendor revealed that Barnes Bay (not Birch's Bay) was supposed to be allocated '67' but that office was downgraded to an RH from 1/12/1854. Kelly's Point opened on the same day, & was instead allocated '67'. This seems quite peculiar, because the initial allocations were made in alphabetical order to post offices open on 1/11/1853. Barnes Bay should have been allocated BN '12'. However, it was not included in the initial allocation...possibly because it was such a small facility that it was already treated as a de facto Receiving House. Of the other higher numbers, & 75 were all late allocations to Hobart. No examples of & 73 have been recorded, and they were probably not allocated &/or used. 4,000T

Rated RRR. Ex Stephen Bradford: acquired for $7840 at our auction of 9/11/2002. The penal settlement on Norfolk Island was administered from Hobart. Norfolk Island was also the only "external" Van Diemen's Land post office. No allocation was made in November It was preferred to wait until the supply ship "Lady Franklin" departed Hobart 16/12/1853. However, a mutiny forced the ship back to Hobart and the supply of stamps - and the numeral - finally arrived on Norfolk Island 4/9/1854! Several single strikes of BN '72' - of variable quality - have been recorded. This is the only recorded pair and is, without doubt, one of the most exceptional First Allocation Barred Numeral pieces. It is also one of the most desirable items for Norfolk Island collectors. Phil Collas & Richard Breckon in "Norfolk Island: A Postal & Philatelic History" state at page 13 "...The last of the convicts and the military establishment were removed from Norfolk Island in May 1855, leaving it uninhabited, except for caretakers, so the maximum practicable period...van Diemen's Land stamps could have been used was not greater than [eight] months". [The writer, Captain William Wood, arrived in Tasmania in 1829, taking up property at Snake Banks (later Powranna). He named his property "Hawkridge", later changing it to "Woodleigh". Wood was instrumental in establishing a Volunteer Rifle Corps in the Colony.
