1 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 1 NEW SOUTH WALES - Postal History 68 CL B Lot (c.) OHMS outer to Paramatta with fine strike of the undated two-line 'WINDSOR/N.S.W.' handstamp (#C7), endorsed "Police office/windsor" at lower-left, rated "8d" for a single letter. PO 1/3/1828. [The country post offices received handstamps only from March Very few pre-1830s examples are recorded. This item must be pre-1830 because the addressee Edmund Lockyer was Surveyor of Roads & Bridges in only. He was also one of the earliest explorers in the Moreton Bay District & was sent by Governor Darling in 1826 to establish a settlement on King George's Sound (now in Western Australia), from where he set out to walk to the Swan River!, an adventure ruined by inclement weather] 1,000T Lot C C 1830 lengthy two-part entire to England headed "Port Jackson/June 30th 1830" & "Sydney/July " and endorsed on the face "Sydney 31 July 1830/p Ship Dunvegan Castle" with an unusually fine strike of the first type 'SYDNEY/N-S-W/AU 2/1830' cds (#S1: atypically with two-character month) in red, rated "4" in red & fine strike of the hexagonal 'SYDNEY/POST PAID' h/s (#P1) in red but crossed through & endorsed "not paid", boxed 'INDIA LETTER/DEAL' b/s, rated "1/3" being 4d inwards India Letter rate + 11d mileage, heavy vertical fold & some soiling. The writer, a woman, states "...I was obliged to leave Van diemans Land on account of bad health...", and speaks of moving on to New Zealand "among the Cannibal race...who prefer eating human flesh to good beef or mutton...direct my letters to be left at the post office Sydney..." 650T 70 C B Lot printed 'On His Majesty's Service' part-outer (or complete wrapper?) for the Department of Accounts to Inverary endorsed "Free/[initials]" with a surprisingly fine strike of the by now badly worn 'SYDNEY/N-S-W/J 23/1831' cds, peripheral aging. A rare Free item that pre-dates the introduction of the first 'FREE' datestamp in late NB: Use of the single month-letter 'J' signified either (!) June or July, January being represented as 'JA'. This is thought to be the earliest printed OHMS lettersheet in private hands: Hans Karman stated his example of 21/3/1838 was the earliest. The addressee, David Reid, arrived in Sydney in 1815 as Surgeon-Superintendent of Convict Ships. He settled at "Inverary Park" near Marulan. 850T

6 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 6 TASMANIA - The First Allocation of Barred Numerals Period The items in this section are from the Gold Medal exhibit dealing with all the postal markings of the First Allocation Numerals Period formed by David McNamee from California. These cancellers were introduced in November 1853 to coincide with the issue of the "Courier" stamps. They were replaced in February-March 1861 by the Second Alllocation Barred Numerals, although some later usages are known. Naturally, any numeral usage before March 1861 must be from the First Allocation. The collection also includes manuscript cancellations - town names, numerals, cross-hatchings etc - and endorsements of the office name by the postmaster, usually at the left of a cover. Rarity Ratings are as per an article by Randall Askeland at pages of "The Courier" (June 2000), the journal of the Tasmanian Philatelic Society. To obtain a copy, secretary@tps.org.au The stamps are Numeral Watermark Chalons, unless otherwise specified. Ex Lot SDC The balance of the collection scattered through the heavily annotated exhibit pages with Barred Numerals including '10' (faint on 1857 cover, rated RRR), '13' (faint, on 1855 cover), '21' (poor, rated RRR), '25' (RR), '26', '28' (RR), '31' (poor, on 1855 cover), '37' (RR), '42' (RRR), '59' (on 1855 front) & '68' (on 1855 cover to Geelong); manuscript numerals including "14" (RRRR), "15" (light, RRRR), "31" (on 1859 cover endorsed "Greenponds"), "54" (messy, RRR), "55" (RR) & "57" (RR); manuscript names including "[Ki]ngston" (RR) & a couple out-of-period; also manuscript lines (on 1860 cover endorsed "Richmond", RRR), segmented-circle of Macquarie Plains (RRR), Melbourne '1' tying Tas 4d to 1856 cover, and a page of late usages of First Allocation Numerals '27' '50' & '57' all on Pictorials. The condition of both the material and the strikes is very mixed but this is nonetheless a handy basis for reforming a collection. The cover is illustrated in the "Handbook" Vol I opposite page 61] Birch's Bay opened as a Receiving House on 1/12/1853 and it has long been thought that '67' was used there. However, research by our vendor revealed that Barnes Bay (not Birch's Bay) was supposed to be allocated '67' but that office was downgraded to an RH from 1/12/1854. Kelly's Point opened on the same day, & was instead allocated '67'. This seems quite peculiar, because the initial allocations were made in alphabetical order to post offices open on 1/11/1853. Barnes Bay should have been allocated BN '12'. However, it was not included in the initial allocation...possibly because it was such a small facility that it was already treated as a de facto Receiving House. Rated RRR. Ex Stephen Bradford: acquired for $7840 at our auction of 9/11/2002. The penal settlement on Norfolk Island was administered from Hobart. Norfolk Island was also the only "external" Van Diemen's Land post office. No allocation was made in November It was preferred to wait until the supply ship "Lady Franklin" departed Hobart 16/12/1853. However, a mutiny forced the ship back to Hobart and the supply of stamps - and the numeral - finally arrived on Norfolk Island 4/9/1854! Several single strikes of BN '72' - of variable quality - have been recorded. This is the only recorded pair and is, without doubt, one of the most exceptional First Allocation Barred Numeral pieces. It is also one of the most desirable items for Norfolk Island collectors. Phil Collas & Richard Breckon in "Norfolk Island: A Postal & Philatelic History" state at page 13 "...The last of the convicts and the military establishment were removed from Norfolk Island in May 1855, leaving it uninhabited, except for caretakers, so the maximum practicable period...van Diemen's Land stamps could have been used was not greater than [eight] months". A scarce origin/destination item. Acquired by David McNamee for $2070 at a Melbourne auction in [The writer states "...I am still in the employ of the Don Coal as manager...in these Golden Countries where men make fortunes by magic...it is difficult...plodding along for 4 a week...the best paying speculation is Duagariatipe [daguerreotype] taking...the price of a likeness is from one pound to five pounds..."] 2,000T 386 S B B1 Lot 386 TUNBRIDGE: manuscript "Tunbridge/Novr " (?) on 1d pale red-brown (small central repair). Unrecorded by Randall Askeland. PO 17/3/1856. [The date is quite ambiguous. It may be read as 1867 or 1875 but the stamp is correct for an -/11/1857 usage] VICTORIA - Commercial Perfins The material in this section was accumulated by the late JRW Purves & Max Watson, both from Melbourne. In the early 1980s, Bill Purves asked Max to continue Bill's pioneering work on Victoria's perfins. As will be seen, a great amount of material was accumulated but the project never came to fruition, partly as a result of the publication of "The Handbook of Australian Private Perfins" by John Grant & John Matthews. This is certainly the largest holding of mostly pre-1913 Victorian perfins to come onto the market for many years, perhaps ever. 100T 414 C B VICTORIA - Postal History 428 C/CL Lot 414 PRICE, GRIFFITHS & CO: 1d with 'PG/M' perfin (inverted) & 'ONE PENNY' on 2d (scarce on cover) tied to self-addressed envelope by very fine 'TPO 8/UP 27NO12/VICTORIA' cds, minor blemishes. An excellent item for the collector of TPOs or commercial perfins. Useful group including 1860 with 'QUARTZ REEF PLEASANT CK' b/s, 1876 to Wales with '8d 8d/EIGHTPENCE' on 9d, 1893 to the Orkney Islands, 1908 to Mauritius, 1901 with 'M28' & 'STRATHDOWNIE' cds, 1907 with 'M70' & 'CHARLOTTE PLAINS' cds, 1904 with '580' & 'BAYNTON' cds plus Blank Tablet 4d Postage Due, 1905 Avis de Réception form with 'MARKET ST/MELBOURNE W' cds, etc, condition variable. 56 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 56 VICTORIA - Postal History (continued) 429 C B Lot entire headed "Seymour" to the local Commissioner of Crown Lands, rated "1d" for the "drop letter" rate, good strike of the badly worn 'SEYMOUR/[crown]/MY*16/1846/PORT PHILLIP' d/s on the flap. PO 1/7/1844. [The 1d rate applied to "letters or packets put into any Post Office for delivery at such Post Office". Examples from provincial towns are very rarely encountered. Max Watson had only five drop letters in his collection, four from Melbourne, and one from Geelong] 600T 430 C B Lot entire headed "Thargana by Aldbury/28 Nov 1846" to Broken River (Benalla) with unusually fine 'OVENS/[crown]/ DE*2/1846/ PORT PHILLIP' & 'BROKEN RIVER/[crown]/ DE*2/1846/PORT PHILLIP' backstamps & rated "6" for carriage between 20 & 30 miles, readdressed to Melbourne (part-b/s) with no additional charge raised. Ex Rod Moreton (2005). [Apparently carried privately to Ovens] 600T 434 C B Lot (Nov 25) outer to Portland endorsed "Paid and Registered 3/6", good backstamps of the rare 'THE GLENELG/ PORT PHILLIP' & 'PORTLAND/NEW.S.WALES' arrival, internal docketing identifies the sender as Alexander McKinlay, first postmaster at The Glenelg. 57 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 57 VICTORIA - Postal History (continued) 435 C B 436 C B Lot (March 12) entire headed "Limestone Ridge" with poor strike of the scarce rounded-boxed 'PAID/THE GLENELG' h/s (#P17a) & largely very fine 'THE GLENELG/[crown]/MA*15/1848/PORT PHILLIP' b/s, to Portland rated "9" in red for carriage between 80 & 120 miles, fair 'PORTLAND/N.S.W' arrival b/s. Ex Rod Moreton (2005). [The signature of the sender Alexander ("King") Cameron has been excised. He arrived at Sydney in -/1/1839 & immediately overlanded to Port Phillip. An uncle of the same name settled at Mount Sturgeon Plains sear Dunkeld, from where Alexander Jnr continued west, settling at Mumbannar & later at Penola (SA). "Pastoral Pioneers" states in 1842 it was unclear whether Limestone Ridge was in Victoria or South Australia! One of Cameron's nieces was The Blessed Mary McKillop. She joined the family as governess in 1860 at Penola where 7 years later she later became the first initiate of The Sisters of St Joseph & the Sacred Heart] 1848 (April 10) entire headed "Urang Aranga" & signed "John Ritchie" to the "Crown Solicitor/Melbourne" with light but clear strike of the rounded-boxed 'PAID AT/PORT FAIRY' handstamp (#P15) in red & poor Port Fairy oval b/s, rated "11" in red for carriage between 170 & 230 miles, with very fine 'MELBOURNE/[crown]/PORT PHILLIP' arrival backstamp (Purves Type 3: ERD). Port Fairy (1) PO 1/7/1843; renamed Belfast 1/1/1854. [The writer begs off attending a trial in Melbourne on account of his ill health. A medical certificate (from his brother!) is included, as is a very crude receipt for purchase of a horse. "Urang Aranga" was a 26,000 acre property in the Portland Bay District] 450T 250T 437 C A- Lot entire headed "The Gums" & signed "Alex Kemp" to Melbourne with an untidy but discernible strike of the rare (especially in the Port Phillip period) 'MUSTONS CREEK/ [crown]/jy*31/1848/pt PHILLIP' datestamp (inverted day slug) unusually on the face & rated "10" for carriage between 120 & 170 miles, very fine 'MELBOURNE/PORT PHILLIP' arrival b/s. PO 1/3/1848; renamed Caramut 1/1/1854. Ex Rod Moreton (2005). [The brothers Alexander & Edward Kemp farmed "Chiene's Station" (aka "Lawrenny"), in the early 1840s. However, by 1845 it had passed to William Gray. "The Gums" was an adjoining property, farmed by the Burchett Brothers. Ray Kelly's cover with very fine Muston's Creek d/s sold for $3136 (2003)] 750T

58 Prestige Philately - Auction No 180 Page: 58 VICTORIA - Postal History (continued) 439 C A- Lot lengthy entire headed "Waranooke - River Richardson/31 Dec 1848" & signed "Henry Nicoll" to England, prepaid with a light but largely fine strike of the 'GEELONG/JANY 1/1849.' provisional handstamp in red on the reverse (unfortunately overstruck with the London transit b/s also in red), rated "3" in red for a single shipletter & "8" in black payable by the recipient of an inwards shipletter. A great rarity. Ex Tony Rigo de Righi (1982) & Brian Peace. The early datestamps had the year fixed, requiring that they be returned to Melbourne each December to have the year changed. In the absence of a datestamp, most offices used manuscript endorsements. The postmaster at Geelong resorted to more imaginative expedients. Only one other example of this datestamp is recorded - Ex Hugh Freeman & Michael Silvasich - and it is struck in black: that item sold for $6900 at our auction of 22/4/2006. The writer states "...the beer & spirits are very bad in this country but we have good wines...have been washing some skin wool the process of which is to let the skins lye in a heap wetted until they decompose when the wool comes off...in March we shall have 1500 lambs to shear..." Wooroonook is 13km W of Charlton on the Richardson River. This item was apparently carried privately to Geelong. 4,000T 445 C B Ex Lot (c.) pair of cover fronts from the Cape of Good Hope each with Triangle 4d 1) "per Prairie" with the stamp poorly cancelled, light Melbourne arrival d/s & light strike of the very scarce 'LC/JU19 a /1859' Letter Carrier's datestamp, forwarded to "Sandhurst"; & 2) "pr Caroline Elizabeth" with the stamp uncancelled, superb 'DETAINED ON/BOARD OF SHIP' h/s in red applied at Melbourne, rated "2" in black for the redirection fee to "White Hills/Sandhurst"; minor blemishes. [The addressee, Isaac Edward Dyason, made his mark on the Victorian Goldfields, not as a miner but as a property manager. He lived at White Hills, so named because of the regular mounds of mining tailings that were visible from miles away. His son, Edward Clarence Evelyn Dyason, was a successful mining engineer and later a stockbroker] (2) 400

A very desirable & important postal history item. [In 1861, a service was introduced that allowed mail posted late for the English Mail to be taken to the ship while it was still at anchor. This is the only recorded cover from the initial period, when no late fee was charged. From July 1864, the late fee was 2/-. It was halved to 1/- in September 1865] In his collecting prime, Roy Holland was unbeatable for TPO covers. Remarkably, he managed to acquire all seven recorded Hobson Bay covers!, five of Type 1 across three different rate periods, & only two of Type 2. At least four of the seven are again "well held" in major collections. This may be the only opportunity for many years to acquire an example. 4,000
