3 At the December 3 rd meeting, we held our annual election of club officers and committee chairpersons. Donna McGinnis volunteered to act as election supervisor and did a great job. Donna thanks. Most of this year s committee chairpersons volunteered again for next year. 3 PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE December 2011 We had a lot of discussions and suggestions during the meeting about the club activities during the coming year. The swap meet committee needs to collect T parts for the spring swap meet. We are currently storing the stash of parts in one of my sheds. If you have parts for the swap meet, we have room to store them. Give me or one of the committee members a call and we will arrange for pickup and/or delivery. Another major topic discussed at the meeting was touring and the need for more of them. I wanted to host a tour starting at my farm this year. I had never been on a tour until I bought Mr. T. Now that I know a little more about touring, I plan to schedule two tours for next year. I will layout the tour routes and coordinate them with our events coordinator (Jerry/Patty Wrolstad). If you have a tour in mind, get what information you can and talk to Jerry or Patty. In the November T OILERS President s message Dwaine Engler mentioned a fix-it day for new members. I think that is a great idea. My farm is available, and there is enough driveways to test drive the fixed cars. We could also have driving instructions for the new T drivers. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all, and we will see you at the January meeting. Dick Borton Paper Newsletter? If you are getting the newsletter via and can live without a paper copy, please contact Walt at wberdan@comcast.net so we can save the printing expense. We have lost our low cost color printing option. It s been a great ride as Ray Moore has been able to print our newsletters for less than black and white copies at Kinko's prices. Now we need to pay retail copy / printing prices so I will be producing the newsletter in color for and web delivery but the paper copies will be printed in black and white. Black and white copies will cost about $1.00 each plus postage.

4 4 PSC Meeting Minutes December 3, 2011 Co-President Dick Borton called the meeting to order at 12:20 PM at Bob s Burgers and Brews on Everett Mall Way. There were 21 members present. Al and Esther Banholzer were introduced to the North end members not present last month in Kent. Treasurer s Report Ann Musolf reports that we are solvent. Minutes Ann Musolf moved that we accept the minutes as printed in the November T Oilers. Harold Musolf seconded and it was passed. Events Jerry Wrolstad, Events Coordinator, said that no events were planned and that there was an opportunity for someone to serve in that position. There was no response. Swap Meet - Keep items in mind for the Swap Meet. There was a discussion on the new Building 604 and the good points of Building 600 for our booth. Dick Borton has room to store parts for the Meet. Web Site Larry Mann has posted new pictures. Sunshine Donna McGinnis reported that Elaine Ellis sent a sympathy card to Henry Chiles. A get well card will be sent to Dwaine Engler. Hospitality No Report T Oilers Walt Berdan has a copy of the Vintage Ford and also copies of newsletters from other clubs for those who are interested. Ray Moore has retired and no longer has access to the color printer. Following a discussion, it was decided to produce the T Oilers in color but print it in monochrome for mailed copies. Insurance Donna McGinnis said so far, so good. Raffle Winners Jerry Wrolstad, Mike McGinnis, Esther Banholzer, Dick Borton, Harold Mann, Walt Berdan, George Anderson, and Ray Moore. Badge Drawing Penny Cruger who wasn t present. Old Business Appreciation Luncheon in lieu of a meeting Following discussion, Mike McGinnis moved to have a Crazy Hat Luncheon. The person with the Craziest Hat will have the balance of their luncheon paid. (The club is already paying the first $10 of each member lunch.) He and Donna would plan it at an upscale location on January 28 th. Walt Berdan seconded the motion and it passed. Election Donna McGinnis had been asked to be the election supervisor. The slate: Dick Borton & Dwaine Engler Co-presidents, Larry Mann Vice President, Joyce Arneson Secretary, Ann Musolf Treasurer. There were no nominations from the floor. Ann moved that we accept the slate. Ray Moore seconded it and it was passed. Committees Jerry and Patty agreed to continue as events coordinators. Mike will coordinate any program plans. He was asked to get Jim Cunningham to repeat his presentation for the northern contingent. Mike McGinnis will be the Safety Replacement. Larry Mann will continue to do the Raffle with someone else selling tickets. Donna McGinnis will do the Roster. Dues $15 if paid to Ann Musolf by December 31, $18 if January 1, 2012 or later. Please include

5 your application. The information is needed for the roster and the insurance. Calendar January 28 th, 2012 Crazy Hat Party February 25 th, 2012 March 31 st, 2012 Respectfully, Joyce Arneson, Co-Secretary 5 Where to Go for Parts and Service? At the last meeting I mentioned that X-Act Machine (one of our advertisers) was going to close down as the owner is moving to Montana. This brought up some discussion about where to go for various parts and services for our cars. Some of us want to do much ourselves but still need machine shop services and some prefer to have someone else tackle most or all of the work. The following is by no means a comprehensive list but it includes some recent recommendations for fairly local resources. Machine Shop Services (for those who prefer to do their own finish and assembly work): Auto Truck Service, 3921 Smith Ave., Everett, WA (425) C & D Machine, NE 124th St, Kirkland, WA (425) Action Machine, Aurora Ave N., Shoreline, WA (206) Babbitt Work: Dave s Engine Shop, P.O. Box 178, Wilkeson, WA (509) More Full Service Work: Steve s T Work s (Steve Tomaso), 1709 Milton Way, Milton, WA (253) Antique Auto Ranch is located at 2225 N. Dollar Rd. in Spokane, WA (509) Wood Wheel Respoking: Lee Johnson, Milton area, (253) Parts and Pieces: Steve s T Work s has an inventory of gaskets and small parts and pieces Antique Auto Ranch has a good inventory of new and used parts William Bender, (206) has a wide variety of parts and pieces Naturally, the national vendors Lang s, Chaffin s, Snyders, etc. have major lines of replacement parts Please let me know of others you can recommend, or conversely if you have had problems with some. I occasionally get questions about where to go and it s nice to be able to provide some options. Walt Berdan

6 6 Timing a Model T Ford Finding the Correct Piston Position Remove No. 1 spark plug, reconnect the wire Note the plastic rod has a ferrule larger than and set it up on the head as shown. (Better the hole in the fitting so it can t fall in. yet, remove all plugs, clean and re-gap to The plastic rod is following the piston s travel.025 in.) Look in the plug hole with a up and down. Here, the piston is moving up. flashlight, or use a plastic fitting as shown with a plastic rod to determine piston location. Here, the piston is down. Here, the piston has reached the top and is slightly on the way back down. You can see the plug firing. Note that the plug only fires every other revolution, so you may have to turn the engine over several times. Adjust the timer rod for the proper timer setting using bend tools or a vise The timer is installed and properly adjusted so that when starting the engine with the spark lever fully retarded, the plug will not fire until the piston is on the way back down on the compression stroke. Use the plastic rod and fitting in the Spark Plug hole to find the correct piston position. If the plug fires too soon or too late, adjust the timer rod making it longer or shorter to get the correct adjustment. The correct adjustment is critical to be sure the engine does not fire before the piston reaches top dead center. Severe damage can occur to the Bendix drive on electric starters and to bones, tendons and ligaments on Armstrong Starters. Please take the time to do it right. Editor s Note: If you don t have the tools shown (and I don t either) a plastic drinking straw works well to determine piston position and a vice grip and vice work pretty well for bending the control rod.
