CLUB GARIN SPORT Calendar and Code Ordering Uniforms: Uniforms need to be ordered through the uniform shop at least 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the sport to ensure they will be ready in time e.g. beginning of Term 1 to play Terms 2 & 3, otherwise a late fee of $10 will apply. 4 CLUB GARIN GUIDELINES Club Garin is the wider curriculum of the school. Statement Garin College recognises the important role that Sport, Arts, Christian service and the Journey programme play in developing individuals into productive and functioning members of society. Wider curricula activities are an integral part of an individual s Hauora - that is their spiritual, social, mental/emotional and physical well being. This development of the whole person is achieved through positive experiences. In fact learning in all curriculum areas, is enhanced by relevant and enjoyable experiences in wider curricula activities. Guidelines To promote these activities as an integral part of school life and encourage ongoing enjoyment and appreciation of their value. Triathlon The Triathlon team is a high preforming one having placed first in the regionals in 2008,2010 and 2011 and 2nd in & Team members train for & compete in the regional triathlon event at Rabbit Island as well as individuals travelling to Taupo for the Nationals in March. A road bike is essential at some point. The team enjoys sponsorship from the ASB Aquatic Centre. Competitors are also encouraged to participate in the Tuesday night Tasman Wheelers Cycle Racing and Thursday night Port Nelson sea swimming. Team: Individual Boys,Girls & Teams Terms 1 and 4 Practice: Wednesday am Friday pm Please refer to the NZSSSC website for details To provide a safe and positive environment in which students can participate in wider curricula activities. 6 SPORT AT GARIN: For sport to run well at Garin College several things must come together as one. They are: A suitably qualified Coach A Manager or staff liaison person A sufficient number of committed students Students paying fees on time. Parental support If all these things happen we are well on the way to having successful and enjoyable sport at Garin College. Helping with transport costs If you travel with someone else to a venue of considerable distance it is expected you will provide petrol money to the driver. The driver should expect this to cover their costs. If they don t want the petrol money then they should accept it anyway and could then donate it to Club Garin Sport for other travel costs. Regardless of their choice they should accept the money. Football Club Garin team jerseys are hired from the Uniform Shop. Both the girls and boys teams are dependent on numbers. 7 Rugby Term 1 Skills and fitness sessions Terms 2 and 3 play STUDENT EXPECTATIONS 1. Do a few sports well, not many badly. 2. Know the demands and commitments the sport requires of you. 3. Commit wholeheartedly to the sports you choose. Garin students who play rugby register at the College and play with age grade teams within the Marist Rugby Club. Team: Practice: Game: U14/U15 teams 3.30pm Tues/Thurs Saturdays U16/U18 Teams are composed depending on the ages of the players and the numbers registering to play $75 for subs & jersey hire. There are also associated tournament/tour costs. Need to buy your own shorts and socks. Socks $15 Playing for other clubs or schools If you attend Garin College you are expected to play for Garin College. If we do not offer your sports code you may compete for a club. If we offer the code but we do not cater for your ability level you may seek permission to play for a club. Playing for other schools is not appropriate. However, there may be circumstances where special dispensation may be granted e.g. where two colleges combine to field a team where otherwise neither of them would have been able to. In this situation, permission from both schools must be granted. 8 FAIR PLAY PRINCIPLES Garin College supports and promotes the ideals of fair play. What does fair play mean? Faiplay is much more than something we see or do on the sports field. It s the sporting environment we create for young people in which they can experience challenge and success Fairplay is: Respect for the opposition, the officials and the rules of the game. Staying cool no matter what happens Dignity in winning and losing Keeping sport fun it s why we do it Athletes Code of Conduct Good sport is about positive attitude. Play your part - play fair. To the best of my ability I will: Play by the rules Never argue with an official Work hard to do my best at all times Turn up to practices with a positive attitude Be a good sport and recognize good players and good plays by all involved Remember to thank my coach, the officials, the opposition and supporters Help others in my team when I can Avoid putting people down or bullying them Be committed to my sport, my team and my coach Club Garin Sport 8 21 Club Garin Sport
9 Netball By signing up to play Netball players make a commitment to their team for the entire season. They need to be available for trainings and games every Saturday. All teams train at Garin College. Teams are entered in competitive grades at Saxton Stadium. Terms 2 and 3 In Term One players will register to trial for Netball in a meeting during whanau time. This will be advertised on the daily notices. Junior and Senior trials are held, with independent selectors forming teams according to ability. In 2014 Garin registered five senior teams and five junior teams. Play your part to help make each game a success - play fair. To the best of my ability I will: Set personal behavior standards for myself and for those I coach to follow Give each player the same amount of my attention and time Ensure my coaching programme is developmental for all of my athletes Ensure that every player who meets all the other requirements (registered, attends practice, has correct gear etc) has game time (each week if possible) Never argue with the referee, encourage cheating or make excuses for losing Always be positive. Never shout at or ridicule players Respect players efforts regardless of whether we have won or lost Encourage respect for the opposition and officials Keep winning and losing in perspective with personal challenge and enjoyment Players purchase their own playing uniform from the Garin Uniform Shop. Netball fees are as follows: $102 for all Junior teams $135 Senior B and C teams $165 Senior A team Tournament entry fees and associated costs are additional. 10 Parents Code of Conduct Good sport is about positive attitude. You can set the right tone, and help make the game a success. Play your part - play fair. To the best of my ability I will: Encourage my child, and other people s children, in their efforts in sport Insist that my child plays within the rules and by the principles of Fairplay Respect my child's efforts the same regardless of whether s/he has won or lost Display self-control on the sideline. Always be positive. Never shout at or ridicule players Watch my child play and let him/her enjoy the game Show my appreciation to people who volunteer their time so my child can play Remember that my child plays sport for his/her reasons not mine Be a positive role model for my child Never place undue pressure on my child to play or perform Make an effort to understand the rules of the game Officials Code of Conduct Good sport is about positive attitude. To the best of my ability I will: Control the game in a fair and positive manner Be consistent and fair in my decisions Modify my approach to suit the participants level of ability Help players understand the rules by explaining decisions where appropriate Do what I can to make sure that everyone enjoys the game - including myself Encourage Fairplay and not tolerate foul play of any kind - always be firm and friendly. Club Garin Sport 10 Boys and Mixed Hockey A competitive team that welcomes new players. Dedication and commitment are the key elements required for this sport. A willingness to attend a week long Tournament, if required, is essential for selection in this highly successful team. 11 Cycling/Mountain Biking Terms 1, 2, 3 and 4 This team works in conjunction with the Triathlon team. Participants require a racing bike. Participants will compete in Regional Time Trials, team race & road race. Teams to travel to SI events will be dependent on numbers interested & results in Regionals. Participants are also encouraged to join local road cycling club. Members of the MTB team need a mountain bike. Supporters Code of Conduct Good sport is about positive attitude. You can set the right tone, and help make the game a success. Play your part - play fair. To the best of my ability I will: Respect that people are involved in sport for fun and enjoyment Support good play and applaud good performance from all competitors Attempt to understand the rules of the game Learn the difference between supportive and abusive comments and rule out the latter Accept the decisions of officials and coaches Display self-control on the sideline. Always be positive. 12 How to select your sports 1. Look at the Sports Calendar Overview on page 13 to see when sports are played. 2. Check out sports you are interested in on the individual pages to find more information. 3. Consider the uniform costs on page Make your sport selections, but consider your time commitments. 5. Attend the relevant sports code meetings to sign up. 6. Pay for the sports at the appropriate time and organize your uniform if necessary. Record of Sports and Practices Sport Term Days Time Cross-Country A team selected from the school cross country will compete at both the regionals and nationals. Team trainings will coincide with Nelson Athletics Training coached by Mr Greg Lautenslager. Terms 1 and 2 Please refer to the NZSSSC website for details School events are compulsory and free. If selected to represent the school in interschool National competitions there is a $20 fee for NZSSSC registration plus uniform hire. Transport, accommodation and meal expenses will be announced prior to the relevant event. 13 Cricket Terms 1 and 4 Games are played on Saturday afternoons, usually at Greenmeadows Park. The school provides equipment eg bats, pads, helmets for those who don t have their own. Players are expected to be dressed in whites for all games. Parents are needed to score, manage and umpire, please contact us if you can help. Dependant on numbers signing up.
