We very much hope that the Mull 7's competition encourages even more young people to become involved in rugby and to continue playing sport throughout their lives. Scottish Sea Farms would wish to congratulate the organisers for their professional approach to the tournament and we wish all teams well as they battle for the silverware. Finally we would encourage the people of Mull to support the Rugby Club on this great day out at the World's Most Sociable Sevens. Your enjoyment is guaranteed. Jim Gallagher Managing Director

5 3 ISLE OF MULL WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT Founded in 1985 the Isle of Mull Sevens Tournament brings together rugby clubs from all over the West Highlands and Islands along with guests: Rugby players from all walks of life and all levels of skill compete on equal terms of skill and enjoyment. By doing this we hope to promote rugby in Scotland s West Highlands and Islands. The very social nature of rugby and the fact that it is a game for all weathers makes it an ideal sport for our isolated rural areas where long trips and overnight stays are commonplace. Mull s geographic position in the centre of this remote area makes it the perfect setting for a competition of this nature. For these reasons the Sevens Committee award trophies to the best West Highland team in the tournament. As an added incentive these trophies are for the winning club to keep. The rules for this competition are on Page 26. In 1992 the Mull Sevens made rugby history by running a dual tournament for both ladies and men. This was the first of its kind anywhere in the world! This makes 2006 the twentyfirst anniversary of the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens. 7 5 WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND TEAMS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THE ISLE OF MULL SEVENS ISLE OF MULL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Mull is the third largest island in the Hebrides, exceeded in area by only Lewis and Skye. The coast line, broken by sea lochs, bays and inlets, is the amazing length of over 300 miles. On Sunday 30th July, 1978 the first game of rugby was played and won on Mull! Shortly after, the Isle of Mull RFC was formed and has thrived under what can only be described as arduous conditions. April 1989 was the most successful in the history of Mull Rugby Club with three sevens victories. These achievements and the completion of the Garmony pitches gained the club the honour of being MacEwan s Club of the Month in September of In the spring of 1994 we completed our Clubhouse. In 2002 the club became the first Glasgow and District island club to be promoted to the Scottish National Leagues. WOMENS SECTION: Mull women s teams have won the main tournament once. The women s rugby team was officially constituted into the Isle of Mull Rugby Club in CLUB PITCH: Garmony. CLUB HOUSE: Garmony Clubhouse. ARRAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: It is often said that Arran is Scotland in miniature - having wild mountains to the north and a fertile plain to the south. An ideal gathering ground for rugby players. Arran Rugby club was started in September 1975 and for 10 years the club played only friendly games. In that time the hospitality of these islanders became legendary with many a visiting team, long overdue when finally returning home! In 1985 the club took a major step and joined the Glasgow District League. By careful timing of kick-offs they are able to play and return by ferry on the same day. Players are drawn from all parts of the island. Arran junior rugby is very strong at the moment. CLUB PITCH: Lamlash Recreation Park. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Andy s Place. BENBECULA NOMADS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have been linked by bridges and causeways to form a single long island. Benbecula is separated from its neighbours by stretches of shell sand and quick sand. On the southern slope of the largest hill Rueval, all of 408 feet high, is the cave in which Prince Charles Edward Stuart hid while waiting for Flora MacDonald. The Army have a rocket base on Benbecula and a firing range on South Uist. In 1977 some local lads and schoolboys got together and formed a rugby team. They have no home for the club; hence the name Benbecula Nomads. The locals found difficulty in sustaining a team and later combined with the army team. The number of civilians to service players fluctuates from year to year. Benbecula run one team and are not in a league. Local players come from all three islands. The mainstay of games is against the visiting units (Vu s) for the firing programme on the rocket range. The team have amazing travel difficulties. In fact on one occasion they left for a game in Edinburgh on Thursday and due to storms were not able to return until the following Wednesday! All playing facilities however are now provided by the army. CLUB PITCH: Airfield. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Airfield

8 6 BUTE RUGBY CLUB CLUB HISTORY: With the mountains of Arran to the south and those of Argyll to the north, Bute is a lowland island in a highland setting. The capital is Rothesay, perhaps the best loved of all the Clyde resorts. Although closest of all the visiting teams to the main centres of rugby in and around Glasgow the Bute team is also restricted by a ferry journey across the Firth of Clyde to Wemyss Bay. In fact, players leaving for Mull do so by the less time consuming Rhubodach - Colintraive ferry. Bute Rugby Club was founded in They run one social team. CLUB PITCH: The Meadows. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Criterion Bar ISLAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Islay, the southernmost of the inner Hebrides, has a population of 4,000. Each year it pays the Exchequer the equivalent of 6,000 for each man, women and child on the island! The reason for such riches is uisge-beatha - the water of life! i.e. whisky, which Islay produces in large quantities. Islay R.F.C. joined the SRU in December Islay have had no word of acceptance into League Rugby and have to rely on friendlies. They have built up a unique relationship with the Inishowen Rugby Club of Southern Ireland. To fulfil this fixture Islay achieved its wings by chartering a plane. CLUB PITCH: Bowmore High School. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Marine Hotel KINTYRE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Were it not for a tiny isthmus at Tarbert, Kintyre would be a member of the inner Hebrides. Principal town is Campbeltown - probably once the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada; the name Campbeltown comes from the early 1600 s when Archibald Campbell was Earl of Argyll. Kintyre Rugby Club started in 1983 with a meeting at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown. In 1985 they joined the Glasgow and District League. The club is, at present, having a break. CLUB PITCH: The Meadows. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Burnside Bar LOCHABER RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Travelling north when you cross the Ballachulish Bridge you enter Lochaber truly Scotland s grandest landscape. Lochaber is spread at the foot of the Great Glen and at the head of Loch Linnhe stands Ben Nevis. Between Ben Nevis and Loch Linnhe lies the chief town of Lochaber - Fort William. Lochaber R.F.C. was officially started in 1969, a good five years after Oban. Her officials point out, however, that the first team in Fort William was playing way back before the war in 1933 it ran for a few years and then folded. Lochaber is a strong West Highland team and play in the National Leagues. CLUB PITCH: Banavie. CLUBHOUSE: Banavie. MID ARGYLL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: In 1977 a few enthusiastic players started a team, based at Lochgilphead and called it Mid Argyll. Lochgilphead is a town of Victorian and later stone houses, standing on a slope at the top of Loch Gilp, an inlet off Loch Fyne. The Crinan Canal, which skirts the town, is a never ending source of enjoyment as boats journey backwards and forwards from the Sound of Jura. Mid Argyll have a great tournament record being twice winners and runners-up three times and also winning BWH Team Trophy. Mid Argyll play in the Glasgow District Leagues. CLUB PITCH: Mushroom Field. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Argyll Hotel OBAN LORN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: By West Highland standards Oban is a large town, essentially where steamers meet road and railway. From the piers fishing boats are constantly coming and going; ferries for the inner and outer Hebrides as well as a host of smaller ports leave daily and various supply boats load and unload. During the summer tourists fill the rows of hotels along the front, attracted by Highland Games, Ceilidhs, Regattas or the general scenic splendour. Oban Lorn RFC, now in their 30th season, have a showpiece Clubhouse. Oban are a powerful team and play in the National Leagues. CLUB PITCH: Glencruitten. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: Glencruitten.

9 7 PORT-RIGH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - Ellen a Cheo CLUB HISTORY: The name of Port-Righ is the gaelicised form of Portree, which means King s Harbour - conferred on the town after the visit of James V s fleet in Eilean a Cheo means island of mist or the Misty Isle - a bit less of a mouthful than an-t eilean Sgiathanach (Isle of Skye). From the sea the clouds clinging to Skye can be seen long before its craggy peaks; thus the Norsemen called it Skygo or Isle of Clouds. It is a land of mountain and moor. Tourism apart, crofting is the main occupation of its 7,500 population. Port-Righ was founded in January 1987 with the aim of promoting rugby in the island of Skye. Only a few friendlies were played until the beginning of the 87/88 season when the club applied for and was accepted, to play in the Highland B League. Port-Righ is on a sabbatical at present. CLUB PITCH: Lyndale CLUBHOUSE/HOTEL: The Lodge SKYE AND LOCHALSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Skye and Lochalsh are one of the few rugby clubs whose name encompasses both island and mainland players. An island player has to cross by ferry at Kyleakin to play, for it is on the mainland that the club has its facilities. Kyle of Lochalsh is a bustling little township which has a constant feeling of coming and going. Skye and Lochalsh was founded in 1975 and initially played only friendlies. The team now play in the Highland League. Skye and Lochalsh were the first winners of our trophy with a superb team performance. Who will ever forget the dramatic tie-break situation against Mid Argyll in the final. CLUB PITCH: Balmacara. CLUBHOUSE/HOTEL: Balmacara Naval Base STORNOWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Stornoway is the metropolis of the Western Isles and the only town of burgh size in the Hebrides. It is situated towards the north-east of the single island of Lewis and Harris. Though some 25,000 people live on Lewis and Harris the island contains huge barren areas. Stornoway with a good natural harbour is a fishing port, a market and a centre for the Harris Tweed industry. Tweed manufacturers gave rise to strong border connections; Mills management often trained at the textile college in Gala. Not surprisingly this link led to the founding of Stornoway R.F.C. in The club played for ten years, stopped for ten years and then revived. Stornoway R.F.C. runs one team based in the town with access to a council playing field (they lost a previous field to NATO when a runway was extended). They do not play in a league because of problems with winter ferry timetables but do play in the Brin Cup. CLUB PITCH: Bayhead. CLUB HOUSE/HOTEL: County Hotel MUILEACHS CLUB HISTORY: The Muileachs have a very famous (or infamous) history of appearances at the Mull Sevens. Names like Jackson, Cameron, Noble, Carmichael and Swinbanks sent shivers of fear down the opposition in They re-appeared in 1990; only Carmichael remained of that first magnificent seven. On that day. May 12th 1990, the Muileachs had their finest hour, winning one game and drawing in another. They were narrowly pipped for a place in the semi-finals. In 1993 the Muileachs received a massive sponsorship deal from the combined might of the Ceilidh Place, Craignure and the Salen Hotel. They wish to pass on their thanks to the sponsors without whom the agony of playing would not be possible. The Muileachs only take the field in dire emergency. CLUB PITCH: Any bit of mud. CLUB HOUSE: As many as possible. Our Traditional Mascot

10 8 21 Today: STEP BACK IN TIME

11 9 21 Today: STEP BACK IN TIME Introduction from the Tournament 1985 Mull Rugby Club have no facilities of its own. There is no permanent pitch and games have to be played by moving between the few areas of flat farming land around Salen. This is totally unsatisfactory as each pitch has to be marked out from game to game/and is only possible through the generosity of farmers. The first pitch we had at Salen was on part of the air strip. On a number of occasions games had to be stopped in "mid flight" to allow light aircraft to land. We eventually found another venue. However, this led to our most humiliating moment when, after a league game the visiting team officially complained to the union because there were too many cow pats on the field. This was even more upsetting as our players had spent the morning removing barrow-loads! Something had to be done. Our President, Mr Cameron White, a local businessman and past Scottish schoolboy full-back has gifted Mull RFC a piece of flat, but very boggy land in the centre of Salen. The site is ideal, between the hotel and the hospital. An official survey estimates the cost of making a playing surface at 59,000, of which due to grants etc., we will have to raise about 15,000. For advice on fundraising we asked John Rutherford, who is a frequent visitor to Mull and fully aware of the club's difficulties. John suggested a seven-a-side contest with a difference. The tournament would be played on Mull and involve eight teams from the Highlands and Islands. The novelty would arise in that each club will take the field with an international player in their side. From that gem of an idea many months ago the day of the sevens has at last arrived. Teams have travelled from the Outer Hebrides, Skye and Lochalsh, Fort William, Islay, Mid Argyll, Bute and Oban to do battle not in kilt and with claymore, but on a sports field through the rules of rugby. It is our wish that this tournament is not just for the rewards of winning, but the beginning of close associations between remote West Highland and Island Clubs. We are all overcoming immense geographic problems, so who knows, with this determination, perhaps some day. it will be one of our players that is the guest international.

15 13 TEAM NOTICE BOARD Chiefs (latest club success or perhaps gossip about a team member) One of our players (Chu Nder) has 9 seven's inter- Montrose (Kenny Gammons 2nd Row VII) Graeme Ramsay suffered a horrific ankle injury at the Howe of Fife sevens on Saturday 6th May. He has had to have a plate and 3 screws permanently inserted into his ankle. Hopefully he will be hobbling along on crutches to Mull for the craic. He has been a loyal servant of the club for a long time and everyone wishes him a good recovery. Ross Murray is switching from Montrose & District RFC's grueling training & playing regime for an easy life with premiership side Aberdeen GSFP in season 2006/2007 Chris Edwards will be enjoying one of his few remaining weekends of freedom before he'll be called to heel and only ever sited in hardware aisles at B&Q! Dave Carnegie will be keeping a sharp eye out for any unexpected passes from Shakey this year after leaving Shetland 7's last year with "Gilbert" imprinted across his forehead! And finally Craig Hogg has interrupted filming of his new hit TV show on Channel 4 "My Name is Hogg" to stand on the side line, drink beer and hurl abuse at the Montrose players Watsonians are in Mull this year with more spectators than players. Injuries have struck down a few players from last year but the pull of the 'most sociable sevens' is far to big to miss, so they come to just drink, which is what most of the able-bodied players would rather do too. Last year, Watsonians additional team the 'Basquet Weavers' won the magnificent Pink Cup, but star player Ane 'Stampy' Baonza has sadly now returned to the sunny Basque region and Basquet Weavers are "no mas largo con nosotros" (sorry, that's Spanish not Basque). Watsonians continue to promote Mull 7's and bring every year their new squad membersbetter known as Mull Virgins, to experience the highlight of the rugby calendar. Let's bring home the pink cup again as we can't drink from the plate! GHA's first team, after relegation the previous season from BT Premier League 1,came storming back and had a highly successful season, avoiding relegation from BT Premier League 2 by one place!! The teams malaise this season is reckoned, by many highly esteemed rugby experts, to be due to the fact that many of the team have had one eye firmly focused on this years Mull 7's, and not as Graham Williamson seems to think, because he buggered off half way through the season in a huff to play rugby against children in Rotterdam!! One example of just how much this tournament means to our players, can be summed up in the attitude of one Mr Andrew Crozier, who managed to get himself ejected from New Zealand 4 months into a year long trip, just so he could make it this weekend. Such dedication can only be admired, however whatever he did to get deported should probably not be! Bute barbarians are casting their net ever wider to Scottish Deaf Team Top tip: Not all team members are hard of hearing so - Be careful about what you say! 'GHA young blood' and 'GHA golden oldies' After great success in winning the womens bowl final GHA have come to Mull with 2 womens teams... the young blood and the golden oldies! we have also teamed up with the GHA mens team to provide vital services at mull this year...please don't be afraid to approach one of the pimps if you have any enquiries. TEAM PULL: That s the plan! Highland recently made the BT sheild final at Murrayfield, unfortunately lost to Morgan, however great performance from all the highland boys-very proud day, even cliffy made it and was smiling! RODENT RUGBY First year as a Rugby 7s touring side. Hoping to develop the team over the next few seasons and play in tournaments both at home and abroad. Quarter Finalists at the 2006 Mabell 7s.

23 21 MOTOR REPAIRS- MOT TESTING STATION CAR WASH- PETROL & OILS SELF DRIVE CAR HIRE For effort Sevens passion has been led by Graeme Gillie. For eight years Graeme brought the Stags rugby team to the Mull Sevens. The Stags were so named because each year one of the team was getting married. We wish the Stags well and hope they return one day to rekindle the fires of romance. To support this Tony Hayes (Bute) and Emma Forbes (Kirkcaldy) announced they were getting married after meeting five years previously at the sevens dance. Also Nicky (Inverness) and Stan Whitaker (Locaber) married after meeting in 1997 at Mull. We have worked out that to date 14 couples have met and got married at the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens. We will be starting a wall plaque to couples who met at the sevens and subsequently married. If you know the names of these other or any we have missed please let a member of the committee know.
