2 Main Sponsors GLENGORM MESSAGE FROM OUR SPONSORS It is with great with pleasure that Glengorm are sponsoring the famous Mull Rugby Sevens in Every year the games are played to a very high standard and we wish the Mull Rugby Club every success in what ought to be a thrilling day's event. Glengorm would wish to congratulate all the many organisers for their professional approach to the tournament and we wish all teams well as they battle for the silverware. Finally we would like to thank the many locals who support this great day out at the World's Most Sociable Sevens. Your enjoyment is guaranteed. Tom and Marjorie Nelson Glengorm IMPORTANT POLICE NOTICE In recent years Licensing laws have been tightened up. Club officials have met with the police. Local police concerns are the need for a sufficient number of stewards to enforce licensing conditions on the premises. To work with the police club stewards will be readily identifiable by name badges. One particular worry is that younger club supporters (not being able to purchase at the bar) may try and bring alcohol onto the premises. The stewards are under instructions that only alcohol purchased on the premises can be consumed on the premises. Alcohol from other sources must not be brought into the club house.

5 3 ISLE OF MULL WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND RUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT Started in 1985 the Isle of Mull Sevens Tournament brings together rugby clubs from all over the West Highlands and Islands along with guest players. Rugby players from all walks of life and all levels of skill compete on equal terms of skill and enjoyment. By doing this we hope to promote rugby in Scotland s West Highlands and Islands. The very social nature of rugby and the fact that it is a game for all weathers makes it an ideal sport for our isolated rural areas where long trips and overnight stays are commonplace. Mull s geographic position in the centre of this remote area makes it the perfect setting for a competition of this nature. For these reasons the Sevens Committee award trophies to the best West Highland team in the tournament. As an added incentive these trophies are for the winning club to keep. The rules for this competition are on Page 26. In 1992 the Mull Sevens made rugby history by running a dual tournament for both ladies and men. This was the first of its kind anywhere in the world! This makes 2009 the twenty-fourth anniversary of the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens. 7 5 WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND TEAMS WHO HAVE ATTENDED THE ISLE OF MULL SEVENS ISLE OF MULL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Mull is the third largest island in the Hebrides, exceeded in area by only Lewis and Skye. The coast line, broken by sea lochs, bays and inlets, is the amazing length of over 300 miles. On Sunday 30th July, 1978 the first game of rugby was played and won on Mull! Shortly after, the Isle of Mull RFC was formed and has thrived under what can only be described as arduous conditions. April 1989 was the most successful in the history of Mull Rugby Club with three sevens victories. These achievements and the completion of the Garmony pitches gained the club the honour of being MacEwan s Club of the Month in September of In the spring of 1994 we completed our Clubhouse. In 2002 the club became the first Glasgow and District island club to be promoted to the Scottish National Leagues. In September 2007 Mull was the first winner of the Hydro Electric Club of the Month. This reward was given in recognition of the success of the Mull junior section which had cumulated in winning a national tag rugby title at Murrayfield. WOMEN S SECTION: Mull women s teams have won the main tournament once. The women s rugby team was officially constituted into the Isle of Mull Rugby Club in CLUB PITCH: Garmony. CLUB HOUSE: Garmony Clubhouse. ARRAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: It is often said that Arran is Scotland in miniature - having wild mountains to the north and a fertile plain to the south. An ideal gathering ground for rugby players. Arran Rugby club was started in September 1975 and for 10 years the club played only friendly games. In that time the hospitality of these islanders became legendary with many a visiting team, long overdue when finally returning home! In 1985 the club took a major step and joined the Glasgow District League. By careful timing of kick-offs they are able to play and return by ferry on the same day. Arran have had a great rugby season this year. We wish them well for the future and hope they can come to Mull again soon. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 10 BENBECULA NOMADS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have been linked by bridges and causeways to form a single long island. Benbecula is separated from its neighbours by stretches of shell sand and quick sand. On the southern slope of the largest hill Rueval, all of 408 feet high, is the cave in which Prince Charles Edward Stuart hid while waiting for Flora MacDonald. The Army have a rocket base on Benbecula and a firing range on South Uist. In 1977 some local lads and schoolboys got together and formed a rugby team. They have no home for the club; hence the name Benbecula Nomads. The locals found difficulty in sustaining a team and later combined with the army team. The number of civilians to service players fluctuated from year to year. Local players come from all three islands. The team have amazing travel difficulties. In fact on one occasion they left for a game in Edinburgh on Thursday and due to storms were not able to return until the following Wednesday! This perhaps explains why they play very, very few games. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1

8 6 BUTE RUGBY CLUB CLUB HISTORY: With the mountains of Arran to the south and those of Argyll to the north, Bute is a lowland island in a highland setting. The capital is Rothesay, perhaps the best loved of all the Clyde resorts. Although closest of all the visiting teams to the main centres of rugby in and around Glasgow the Bute team is also restricted by a ferry journey across the Firth of Clyde to Wemyss Bay. In fact, players leaving for Mull do so by the less time consuming Rhubodach - Colintraive ferry. Bute Rugby Club was founded in They run one occasional social team. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 17 ISLAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Islay, the southernmost of the inner Hebrides, has a population of 4,000. Each year it pays the Exchequer the equivalent of 6,000 for each man, women and child on the island! The reason for such riches is uisge-beatha - the water of life! i.e. whisky, which Islay produces in large quantities. Islay R.F.C. joined the SRU in December Islay run their own great event, a beach rugby festival, that normally takes place in the warmer summer months. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 9 KINTYRE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Were it not for a tiny isthmus at Tarbert, Kintyre would be a member of the inner Hebrides. Principal town is Campbeltown - probably once the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada; the name Campbeltown comes from the early 1600 s when Archibald Campbell was Earl of Argyll. Kintyre Rugby Club started in 1983 with a meeting at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown. In 1985 they joined the Glasgow and District League. Kintyre are, at present having a we break. We are very much looking forwards to Kintyre coming back to the Mull Sevens. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 13 LOCHABER RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Travelling north when you cross the Ballachulish Bridge you enter Lochaber truly Scotland s grandest landscape. Lochaber is spread at the foot of the Great Glen and at the head of Loch Linnhe stands Ben Nevis. Between Ben Nevis and Loch Linnhe lies the chief town of Lochaber - Fort William. Lochaber R.F.C. was officially started in 1969, a good five years after Oban. Her officials point out, however, that the first team in Fort William was playing way back before the war in 1933 it ran for a few years and then folded. Lochaber is a strong West Highland team. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 18 MID ARGYLL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: In 1977 a few enthusiastic players started a team, based at Lochgilphead and called it Mid Argyll. Lochgilphead is a town of Victorian and later stone houses, standing on a slope at the top of Loch Gilp, an inlet off Loch Fyne. The Crinan Canal, which skirts the town, is a never ending source of enjoyment as boats journey backwards and forwards from the Sound of Jura. Mid Argyll have a great tournament record being twice winners and runners-up three times and also winning BWH Team Trophy. Mid Argyll play in the Glasgow District Leagues. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 22 OBAN LORN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: By West Highland standards Oban is a large town, essentially where steamers meet road and railway. From the piers fishing boats are constantly coming and going; ferries for the inner and outer Hebrides as well as a host of smaller ports leave daily and various supply boats load and unload. During the summer tourists fill the rows of hotels along the front, attracted by Highland Games, Ceilidhs, Regattas or the general scenic splendour. Oban Lorn RFC have a showpiece Clubhouse. Oban are a powerful team and have finished very strongly this season. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 22

9 7 PORT-RIGH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - Ellen a Cheo CLUB HISTORY: The name of Port-Righ is the gaelicised form of Portree, which means King s Harbour - conferred on the town after the visit of James V s fleet in Eilean a Cheo means island of mist or the Misty Isle - a bit less of a mouthful than an-t eilean Sgiathanach (Isle of Skye). From the sea the clouds clinging to Skye can be seen long before its craggy peaks; thus the Norsemen called it Skygo or Isle of Clouds. It is a land of mountain and moor. Tourism apart, crofting is the main occupation of its 7,500 population. Port-Righ was founded in January 1987 with the aim of promoting rugby in the island of Skye. Only a few friendlies were played until the beginning of the 87/88 season when the club applied for and was accepted, to play in the Highland B League. Port-Righ is on a sabbatical at present. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5 SKYE AND LOCHALSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Skye and Lochalsh are one of the few rugby clubs whose name encompasses both island and mainland players. An island player has to cross by ferry at Kyleakin to play, for it is on the mainland that the club has its facilities. Kyle of Lochalsh is a bustling little township which has a constant feeling of coming and going. Skye and Lochalsh was founded in 1975 and initially played only friendlies. The team now play in the Highland League. Skye and Lochalsh were the first winners of our trophy with a superb team performance. Who will ever forget the dramatic tie-break situation against Mid Argyll in the final. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5 STORNOWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB CLUB HISTORY: Stornoway is the metropolis of the Western Isles and the only town of burgh size in the Hebrides. It is situated towards the north-east of the single island of Lewis and Harris. Though some 25,000 people live on Lewis and Harris the island contains huge barren areas. Stornoway with a good natural harbour is a fishing port, a market and a centre for the Harris Tweed industry. Tweed manufacturers gave rise to strong border connections; Mills management often trained at the textile college in Gala. Not surprisingly this link led to the founding of Stornoway R.F.C. in The club played for ten years, stopped for ten years and then revived. Stornoway R.F.C. runs one team based in the town with access to a council playing field (they lost a previous field to NATO when a runway was extended). They do not play in a league because of problems with winter ferry timetables but do play in the Brin Cup. NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1 COLL CLUB HISTORY: The Isle of Coll is to the north west of Mull. It is a stunning island with many white shell-sand beaches down the west coast. Even though the population is very small, Rugby on the island took a turn for the better when Scotland international player and team captain, Rob Wainwright, moved their in The Coll team have a very famous history of appearances at the Mull Sevens. They did in fact win the competition on their first appearance (albeit boosted by several internationalists). NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 7 MUILEACHS Names like Jackson, Cameron, Noble, Carmichael and Swinbanks sent shivers of fear down the opposition in When they re-appeared in 1990 only Carmichael remained of that first magnificent seven. On that day, May 12th 1990, the Muileachs had their finest hour, winning one game and drawing in another. They were narrowly pipped for a place in the semi-finals. 11 9 The Today s Tag Tournament and Junior Club Update The Isle of Mull Rugby Club, through the co-operation of the Island s Primary School Head Teachers, Active Schools co-ordinator Babs Whyte and the Scottish Rugby Union, introduced Tag Rugby to all the Mull and Iona primary schools in The initiative, now in its third year, involves after schools clubs offering our Mull youngsters the opportunity to train and play Tag Rugby in a structured environment where the emphasis is on enjoyment through participation. The clubs currently involve over 80 participants and operate during the school year. There are a total of six tournaments, which are hosted in turn by the participating schools and culminating in the final one this morning. The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteer coaches, schools head teachers, active schools co-ordinator Babs Whyte and all the parents for their continued and valued effort and support of this initiative. Thanks also to Referee Donnie Morrison who has officiated all season and who will be Refereeing todays matches. He is due to sit his level 1 Refs course on the 23 rd May and we wish him the best of luck. The season started back in September, where a visit by new Rugby Development Officer for Argyll and Bute, Billy Thomson, saw over 40 youngsters take part in a development day, at the end of which every participating youngster received a Rugby Ball supplied by the club. From there it was business as usual as the local volunteer coaches (who this year were joined by Robbie MacDougall) prepared there charges for the seasons competitions. A feature of the success of the Mull Tag competition has been the need to run two pitches on tournament days as there are now 28 matches in every competition. However this isn t an arduous task due to the fantastic hospitality offered by each of the participating schools and parents. Also at round fours competition, hosted by Salen PS at Garmony, was so well attended that the car park at Garmony was full half an hour before kick off. Bunessan PS have been the most consistent side this season though the form side are the Tobermory Tigers who currently hold the Golden ball. The junior club has also been very pro active in promoting the game and over 90 Muileachs travelled to Murrayfield in November, including three generations of MacGillivarys in Donald, James, Shona and Kerry, to support Scotland against South Africa, the club had another great reason to cheer that day, as Island youngster Peter MacGregor took to the hallowed turf of Murrayfield as a Scotland mascot. Mull also leads the way in the region for Rugby Development at all ages and stages and it was fantastic news that we have once again been invited to send a team to Murrayfield to participate in this years Tag Finals on Saturday the 30 th May as part of the IRB World Sevens weekend celebrations. At Mini level the U10 team are performing brilliantly and the U12 s are undefeated this season, the Clubs Rugby Development Manager Fergus Whyte puts this down mainly to the core skills of passing, supporting and evasive running that are being coached week in week out at Tag Rugby, the clubs Youth section have also had an amazing total of 13 out of 22 youngsters from Argyll and Bute selected to go to Perpignan in France on an elite training camp with the Glasgow Thistles. Fundraising is almost completed for this trip, and the boys recently ran an Ultra Marathon Relay of 64.5 miles, in pairs passing a Rugby ball, from Fionnphort to Tobermory via Dervaig, in an awesome time of 8 hours and 16 minutes. The boys selected are: Sean and David Black, Finlay and Patrick Carmichael, Tony Haunschmitt, Angus MacCallum, Scott MacColl, Sean MacPhail, Eoghan MacLauchlin, Craig and Stuart Thomison, Douglas Swinbanks and Ciaran Whyte. It would nt be right to finish without offering congratulations to Mike Story and partner Jane, on their new arrival Alexander who is already sounding like a great prospect for the Mull forwards in the future as he is only 6 weeks old and is already tipping the scales at a healthy 14lbs. No doubt he will be down supporting his two older sisters Brooke and Olivia today. 15 TEAM NOTICE BOARD Livvy snippet; It's just not on Blue Peter you can use Gaffa tape, it's uses are myriad and the limits are your own imagination!!! Just had a look at the weather forecast looks like a wet one!! Flood evacuation plans in place for Morgan?! The Mull Sevens will see the first appearance of the new Mull ladies' strip, kindly sponsored by Shell Exploration and Production, Baker Petrolite, Callum Buchan and Sam Jones (the latter fulfilling a drunken promise to Duncan at last year's Sevens). The team is short on players but has its own chef. She might swear more than Gordon Ramsay but was able to cook up a mean barbecue following beach training in Arctic conditions at Calgary Bay in March. The Nomads (Selkirk Nomads). Although the bulk of the Nomads squad comes from Selkirk, members also come from as far afield as Bath, Stellenbosch, Dirty Galae (Kempy), Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Tobermory. Team Manager : Davey 'Echo-recieving Unit' Bell, Head Coach : John 'Silver Fox' Rutherford, Director of Rugby: Matthew 'Mad-dawg' McCall Director of Fitness and Performance: Iain 'I love bridges and BMX's' JohnstonE, H2O Specialist: Macaulay Culkin, Touch Judges: Iain JohnstonE has offered, but only if he can do it on his BMX. There is not a lot of club news to report on Bute as we have been in a state of flux recently but the young guys on this team list have given us a bit of hope for the future. It is a huge occasion for them and i know they will love it. No news worth printing as I am not planning a sevens comeback, Brochan Cheers Duncan, I've sent it out previous info to contacts I had. This shouldn't happen next year and I've asked Murrayfield to stay away from the Second weekend in May. Craig Deacons has just got married - poor begger!!. 13 The Portobello Playboys were formed by David Softy Hardy in 1999 and competed in the Scottish Rugby League Conference, finishing Runners Up in their first competitive season. They competed in the Conference until 2004, with he exception of 2001 when they took a year out due to foot in mouth something Softy has often suffered from.the Playboys claim to be Portobello's Premier Touring Team and are making their first outing for a number of years to the Isle of Mull to compete in the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens. Oban have just returned from a highly successful tour of Beach Rugby in Mallorca. Crusaders are here to celebrate Tom Magowans Stag. Just look out for the worst dressed player on the pitch! Highlander Captain Tam's stag doo, getting married in July. This is his last EVER trip away with the boys!!!!! I Would like to take this opportunity to Thank mull for Inviting us back for our fifth year at this Fantastic Tournament. We have changed our name from GHA to the World Famous "Ed Crozier Select" due to that little tinker Chris Watson and his sticky little paws and his mother's massive paws!!! This has been a grueling process which Eddie has spanned the globe to discover the Ten best Rugby player's from the Mainland. It has been a Busy year for most of the Serpents and especially a massive congratulations goes to Big Andy who is now a father to baby and who can eat more than Big G!!!Talking about our vice Captain G is still raging because his Fiance is in love with another man who strikes an uncanny Resemblance to Bill Clinton but don t tell him cause he hates it. All the other boys are doing well apart from our star player from last year Phil Brotherhood who got dumped off his girlfriend from Kenya. Our Captain Andy Crozier has changed and went to the opera with his Gran on the 15th of May instead of having a few quite Remember the Gentlemen of Ellon beers with the boys on the Friday! Water boy Chopper Williamson Dundee University are going to have to pull out of Mull 7s this year. A number of our girls are involved in the cup finals for various teams (can't believe it got put on the same day). I am really gutted because this will be the first time in 10 years I have missed Mull but Grangemouth ladies still have a league game scheduled for that date so we wont make it. We won our game yesterday so will be playing at Murrayfield in the Plate final on 10th May. Kirkcaldy are disappointed that they cannot make it as we always love coming to Mull for the 7's.
