1 8 IN THE RUNNING THE OFFICIAL CERF NEWSLETTER Issue 15 In The Running The official CERF Newsletter July 2018 THE CITY OF EDINBURGH RUNNING FESTIVAL OPEN RUNNING AS IT SHOULD BE What a Night! by Andy Cullen What a fantastic evening we got for CERF Beautiful weather, great racing and enthusiastic spectators. You can read a full report of the event on page two of this newsletter. We need to thank everyone involved in making the meeting the success it was because without them there would be no event. Daffy s Gin Thank you to Daffy s Gin for providing the gift set and also the bottles of Gin for the adult winners. Magnificent prizes! Sports Massage Thanks to Nicola Bird and Cal McLennan for providing sports massage for the athletes. I know they were both busy throughout the event and that the athletes really appreciated the massage and the advice provided. Event report A review of CERF 2018 by Graeme Armstrong The Officials Thank you to the officials who do such a great job. They turn up and do what they do without any help from the CERF committee. From the judges to the commentator to the handicappers and the starter they all work tirelessly to make this and every borders games event a success. The volunteers To all the people who give up their time to help before, during and after the event, thank you. We could not put this even on without you. Alba Beverage provided free water and Gatorade to the athletes as well as coffee to our sponsors in hospitality. Given the exceptionally hot night the athletes were very grateful of the hydration provided so thank you to Alba Beverage. 2 IN THE RUNNING THE OFFICIAL CERF NEWSLETTER Issue 15 2 Event Review 2018 by Graeme Armstrong Meggetland had never looked better for the City of Edinburgh Running Festival, with the track in excellent condition and the sun shining brightly. The healthy crowd were looking forward to a great night of foot racing and they were not to be disappointed. Youth s Events The youths were first up and both 90m events were dominated bt T.L.J.T runners. Firstly, the B 90m (Maddie and Marks Shoes) was won by Grace McWhinnie from Abby Munro then in the A 90m (Gill Welsh Fitness and Pilates) was won by Brogan Beattie with this time a Hawick runner Sean McMichan in 2 nd place. Ladies Invitation In the ladies invitation sponsored by C est Si Bon a good field was assembled and the impressive Emily Dagg T.L.J.T. was a clear winner in the fast time of with Stacey Downie 2 nd and Natasha Turnbull 3 rd. Open 200m The Leon Ali Memorial 200m (Petroassist) was dominated by Nina Cessford of T.L.J.T. Due to Nina reaching four sprint finals in a The two big events at CERF are the 800m sponsored by Irene and Nigel Hamilton Jones and the 110m sponsored by Clarity IFA. Both events were eagerly awaited and didn t disappoint. 800m The 800m heats were brutal with only one certain qualifier from each heat. In heat 1 there was a really close finish with the form man Colin Welsh just prevailing in a fast time. In heat 2 Kobe Stevens took the tape in a slower time but maybe with something in hand for the final. Colin Welsh was the bookies favourite and with a lap to go in the final he had gone through the field looking like the winner. Martainn Ramsay then kicked from the bell although most onlookers felt he had gone too early with Welsh giving chase. The In the youths 200m B race (Bruce Collie Building Co.) there was success for Leanna Marshall of Hawick with Jason White T.L.J.T. in 2 nd place. In the 200m A race (Albatrans) Shellee Fojick of Jed AC got home in front of Imogen Lewis of Peebles. In the 800m Youths (Andy Sobik) Irvine Welsh of Hawick ran a great race to beat Ava Hughes of Teviotdale and Sky Marshall of Pitreavie. Another Hawick runner Jai Patterson won the 400m Youths (LA Bridal) with Danielle Lockie T.L.J.T in 2 nd place row she hadn t been seen in the 200 s and her heat time suggested that she was the one to beat. She duly obliged in the final with the impressive Charlie Carstairs 2 nd and the comeback man Ben Robbins 3 rd. Open 400m This event sponsored by Friends of Sandy Jardine found a new name on the honours list when young Alistair Moriarty of Pitreavie AC bolted clear of the field to win from Fraser Neil and Ross Borthwick who fought out a great battle for the runner up spot. Open 1600m The open 1600m (Pactelligence and Thomson Print) turned into a triumph for Fraser Logan of Central AC who fairly romped home with veteran John Thomson coming home in second. The Big Events Edinburgh runner Ramsay ran on impressively to take the tape in 1.55 for a very gutsy win with Welsh second. Clarity IFA 110m The 110m was a very open looking sprint from the start with no clear favourite. Perhaps the surprise of the night was the form of young Scott Tindle who was perhaps the most impressive qualifier from the heats. Other runners who caught the eye at this stage were Sophie Elder who had ran so impressively in the Jed final last year and Marcus Archer, the youngster from Aberdeen. The cross-ties were keenly contested but it seemed the public had decided it was going to be another lady winner with Sophie Elder now the clear favourite. The final turned out to be one of the best yet with the classy young runner from Kelso Douglas Young just getting up to beat Sophie Elder by the smallest of margins. Marcus Archer ran a storming race to come in a close 3 rd.

I think everyone will agree that the ground was in the best condition that it s ever been in the 6 years that the meeting has been held and given the dry conditions that we ve had the groundsman did a great job. Provisional date for next year Next year s City of Edinburgh Running Festival has already been provisionally booked for Friday the 5 th July 2019 so get the date in your diary now. The Calcutta will take place the Friday before on the evening of the 28 th of June. Hope to see you all next year!
