1 This month s issue contains news of the Rotary Young Leaders, Calendar Sales events, the Rotary Charity Team Golf Tournament and the President's Putter 2017, the Racerunner presentation and our budding archers. Editorial Autumn descends upon us in the traditional manner. I can t say the same for the disappearing summer which won t live long in the memory. The point is that the Rotary watershed has been passed and the darker evenings make thoughts turn to the future events of October and November which, I am sure, figure prominently in your diaries. The annual Charity Golf Event has gone smoothly once again thanks to the intrepid sports committee. I was sorry to miss this year through other commitments but the pictures tell the enjoyable story. The linking of fellowship with funds can only be a good thing. And talking of fellowship and funds, we have Rotarian Michael Thomson to thank for an excellent day s archery attended by many Club members and their families. Michael has donated money raised on the day to the Club charity funds for which we thank him very much. So, onto October; keep at the good work. Fellowship Evening 19 th September Our webmaster, Greg Ross, had the unenviable task of writing a quiz to both amuse and test the local knowledge of our members. The quiz, "So you think you know Perth?", contained questions on Perth city including its location and coat of arms; historical events, Perth people, and pictures of Perth taken from unusual angles which contestants had to identify. It was a very enjoyable evening - even those who don't normally like quizzes enjoyed it - and Greg ran the quiz at a pace which allowed lots of fun and fellowship and a certain amount of learning. Calendar News The winning numbers for the month of September were drawn on Tuesday 26 th September I thought you might like to see an example of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. 3 Speakers 5 Sept Katie Eggleston and Jacob Millard - RYLA 26 Sept Alister Walker prostate cancer Rotary Young Leaders Award Winners Katie Eggleston and Jacob Millard joined us for the evening to update us on their experiences during their time with the Rotary Young Leaders. Katie attended the female camp from 1st to 8th July while Jacob attended the male camp the following week. The week-long courses take place at the Abernethy Trust Centre in Nethybridge, just a few miles from Aviemore. Katie showed lively excerpts from videos she had taken which were accompanied by some equally lively music. Chris Kirk, our Youth Convenor, then continued the evening in the form of an interview which prompted some interesting responses from Katie and Jacob and covered a lot of ground in the time available. Alister Walker Our good friend, Alister Walker, visited us this evening to thank our club for the donations given to Prostate Cancer UK ( 1000) and the Perth & Kinross Support Group ( 500). Alister was able to explain the problems in diagnosing this type of cancer and the amount of effort and determination needed to receive relevant consultations. Alister explained that he had been diagnosed with cancer in November 2006 and has spent the last ten years undergoing treatment to keep the problem at bay. Katie was a pupil of Perth Academy until the summer and is now studying Applied Science at the Perth College. Jacob who was previously a pupil at Perth High School has been lucky enough to secure an apprenticeship as a Stonemason with Historic Scotland and is now working in Stirling. The is an enormous amount of information available now and significant support and national and local level, as shown by the work done by Perth & Kinross Support Group. A huge thank you goes to Alister from us all, not only for his lively talk on such a delicate subject, but for the tremendous amount of support he gives to prostate cancer sufferers in the locality. 4 Budding Archers The main photo shows a group from our club who were treated to some archery instruction at the Doo cot Park this morning. At last year s Rotary Club of Perth s Charity Auction Michael Thomson won Tuition for 12 Budding Archers and our thanks go to Michael and his wife Rosemary (pictured extreme left) for so generously donating their prize to club members. It was a fine morning for an introduction to the sport which one or two might well be taking more seriously in the future. Archery tuition was provided by Caroline and Allan on behalf of the Perth Archery Club. The Johnston grandchildren who went along to watch were invited to take part too. 6 ROTARY CHARITY TEAM GOLF TOURNAMENT The Rotary Club held their Charity Golf Tournament at the Dunkeld & Birnam Golf Club on Wednesday 6th September and for the twelfth consecutive year at that venue the weather was fine and sunny. The course was in excellent condition and the assistance, hospitality and meals provided by the Golf Club were very much appreciated by all. 18 teams entered the tournament which was won by Farquhars Finest (pictured above (L -R) Duncan Robertson, Ian Flaherty, Alan MacGregor and Douglas Cramond.) representing Farquhar & Sons, Printers. They won both the Strathallan Trophy for the lowest net score and Hardies Red Hot Ball Prize for the Team Ball lowest net score. They are also pretty good at printing calendars! A final total of the money raised for Rotary charities has not yet been finalised but we hope to achieve an amount similar to last year s total of about 2000.
