This month s issue contains news of the annual hand-over, both local and international; our Calendar Photography Competition and our own Rotary member successes.

Editorial This month news has reached us of the success of some individuals supported by the Club. Our local swimmers, Camilla Hattersley and Scott McLay, have achieved great success in their international swimming competitions and represent the success of Perth youth generally. At the other end of the scale, 78 year-old Fiona Scotland achieved a Bronze medal representing Scotland in the International Blind Bowling World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. Our own sporting successes, although a little more sedate, have promoted Sports Convenor, Willie Monks, to be awarded the Iain Percival Trophy for the organisation of the events; a much deserved award which he is hoping to repeat next year. As a final note, I thought that George Delgaty would like to know how much his own efforts are appreciated with the top picture on the right. Perth Race Running This is a self-funding charity providing the opportunity for children and adults with balance difficulties to take part in racing with the aid of a special bike which they run with rather than pedal. Most of their costs are for staging events and maintenance of equipment. The biggest individual cost is the purchase of the special bikes at 3000 each with a life span of 5 years. The Club have donated 3000 to the project which is now a major part of Perth Strathtay Harriers. The project team is made up of club coaches and managed by charity trustees. Everyone is a volunteer. The last five years has seen a growth in members with a disability and nearly forty members now train throughout the year in various groups. When an athlete reaches the national stage then the project will fund-raise to meet the extra needs for specialised equipment. Young Artist Competition - Thursday 30th November

Speakers 11 July Katy Saulite "Hen Harrier" 25 July Roderick Stewart "HMS Unicorn and the Sailing Frigates" KATY SAULITE gave an interesting and lively talk about her current Hen Harrier LIFE Project

3 Speakers 11 July Katy Saulite "Hen Harrier" 25 July Roderick Stewart "HMS Unicorn and the Sailing Frigates" KATY SAULITE gave an interesting and lively talk about her current Hen Harrier LIFE Project with which she is involved, predominantly in Scotland, as one of two RSPB Community Engagement Officers. Katy presented filmed footage of the acrobatic flying skills of the Hen Harrier, a bird much persecuted in the past. Current thinking is that those very persecutors may be the birds salvation if cooperative projects can be expanded. Thank you Katy and good luck with your project in the future. Fiona Scotland recently represented Scotland in the International Blind Bowling World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. Fiona, now 78 has over the years been losing her sight due to macular degeneration, but this has not prevented her enthusiasm and enjoyment of bowling. Supported by sponsorship from Rotary, we are thrilled to announce that Fiona returned with a Bronze medal. Well done Fiona! Katy is shown below with her host Rotarian Bob Abernethy. Lt Cmdr. Roderick Stewart visited us this evening with tales of HMS Unicorn and the Sailing Frigates. Unicorn, of 46 guns, was built for the Royal Navy in the Naval Dockyard at Chatham and launched in She is now the world's last "intact" warship from the days of sail, one of the six oldest ships still in existence and Scotland's only preserved warship moored at Dundee Harbour. HMS Unicorn was designed as one of the last of the successful Leda class frigates, 150 feet long in the hull and principally armed with a combination of 18-pounder long guns and 32-pounder carronades. They included such fine ships as the famous HMS Trincomalee which was recently extensively reconstructed at Hartlepool and is the only ship afloat in Britain older than Unicorn. 4 Rotary: Making a Difference Outgoing Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland President Eve Conway would like to thank Rotarians in Britain and Ireland for your tremendous work during the Rotary year 2016/17. Eve says: I have been inspired by all of you this past Rotary year and am proud to have been your President. Thank you also for your fantastic support of the Rotary Purple4Polio campaign. This has had great results, including an increase in giving across Great Britain and Ireland to End Polio Now. Together we planted seven million purple crocus corms, involving our partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society, Our Purple4Polio celebrity Ambassadors as well as Typhoo Tea and Wilkin and Sons Ltd (Tiptree Jam). There are some exciting activities ahead for our Rotary Purple4Polio campaign, including a target to plant 10 million purple crocus corms. So watch this space! Eve wishes you all the very best for the coming Rotary year and beyond with Rotary: Making a Difference Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland is welcoming Denis Spiller as President for 2017/18. Denis joined the Rotary Club of Strood in Kent in He has served numerous roles within Rotary, including roles promoting The Rotary Foundation, youth programmes and was also Chairman for the 2016 Rotary Conference in Bournemouth. Denis has a special interest in youth service having a background in voluntary youth work in Kent. Denis commented. The coming year is highly important to us for several reasons. Firstly, it is looking extremely likely that it could be the year we see the final case of wild polio in the world, a cause Rotary started in 1985 when there were 1,000 cases a day, and to which countless funds and hours of volunteer time has been dedicated. This year to date we have seen just six cases. Secondly, it is the year that we shall see many new Rotary clubs being created across the UK and Ireland implementing new flexible, informal and project-active programmes to welcome community and business-minded adults of all ages as members. Thirdly, it s the year that perhaps we shall welcome you to our numbers. Make contact, get involved and join Rotary, it s the best decision you will ever make. 5 Fellowship Trophy Winner Our Sports Convenor, Willie Monks, was deservedly awarded the Iain Percival Trophy and is seen here with President Colin Moreland. Willie has masterminded considerable sporting success in the club this year including winning the Gavel competition, the Three Club Golf Trophy and no less than two Rotary curling trophies. He has taken on the job as Sports Convenor again this year - let's hope we win the Bowling Competition too! Congratulations, Willie, on a welldeserved award. Camilla Hattersley of Perth, who recently won the Scottish Open Swimming Championship at 400m and 800m freestyle, is pictured receiving a cheque for 500 from Rotary President Colin Moreland. Athletes such as Camilla who compete at the top level incur huge personal expenses and the presentation should help ease the financial burden to some extent. We gave Camilla a similar amount of financial help last year shortly before she represented GB at the Rio Olympics. Next month she is due to travel to Taipei to compete in the World Student Games (the Universiade), where 12,000 athletes are expected to take part. The Universiade is widely recognised as the second largest multisport Games in the world after the Olympics and progressively has risen to World Class in scale and standard. Perth swimmer Scott McLay picked up an amazing haul of medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas which ended late on Saturday evening. His huge achievement of 5 medals (3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) now makes Scott the most successful Scottish Youth Commonwealth Games athlete of all time. At the end of March, Scott McLay set a new youth meet record in the Men's 100M Free with a time of seconds. Scott is pictured left with Rotarian Chris Kirk, Club Youth Convenor

Calendar Photography Competition For many months now, the Rotary Calendar Committee has been preparing the way for the photo competition that will generate next year s calendar pictures.

The competition judges are Jean Burhouse, a National Geographic Gold Medal winner and Brian Farey who is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and have been judges for the last three years.

6 Calendar Photography Competition For many months now, the Rotary Calendar Committee has been preparing the way for the photo competition that will generate next year s calendar pictures. Rotarian Frank Sloan has been kept very busy with over 100 entries to the open competition and 15 further entries to the U16 competition. This year s theme is Town and Country. The competition judges are Jean Burhouse, a National Geographic Gold Medal winner and Brian Farey who is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and have been judges for the last three years. Chas Sievewright of the Perth Photographic Society joined the competition as our third judge for the first time this year. Brian Farey, pictured front left, and Chas Sievewright, front right joined us for a meal and a drink or two as a thank you for their work in judging the photographs this year. The judges are joined in the picture by Calendar Committee members Janet Simpson and Bob Reid. We were delighted to receive visiting Rotarians from the other side of the world when Robin and Ann Arndt joined us earlier in the month Robin and Ann are on holiday in Perth, Scotland are from Perth, Western Australia where Robin is a member of the Rotary Club of Heirisson. The photo shows Ann and Robin exchanging Rotary banners with former President Steve Blackett.
