This month s issue contains news of the Club entering the autumn sports events with the inter-club bowling and putting, the Rotary curling and the Charity Golf Day as well as other Club events. Editorial A very refreshing and active month for all the Members who were involved in activities. The Charity Golf organisers can be very pleased with themselves this year. Everything went very smoothly with a full turnout at the Dunkeld Club. This really is a very successful event and every year brings the Club to the notice of the public in the best way possible. A little more personal were the Inter-Club competitions with bowls and putters. This year the Putter Trophy was to go elsewhere while the Bowling Trophy came home. Willie Monks organisation was seamless while a large number of Members attended both events. Willie has extended his planning to the Gavel Competition which kicks off against Glenrothes in the first week of October. It is also nice to see our involvement with Shelterbox back on track. The International Committee have a robust agenda this year and we look forward to further reports. Talking of reports, you might have noticed that our activities pages have been updated so there is further information to be gleaned from a webbrowse. Shelterbox in Perth Bob Abernethy accompanied Steve Blackett to give a talk and demonstration about Shelterbox at St Madoes Primary School. And did you see such a heaving table! They were given a very warm welcome by the head teacher, Jenny Campbell, who intends to make Shelterbox an annual funding project for the school. Jenny s enthusiasm has resulted in the formation of a School Advancement Committee consisting of five primary seven children. The committee has been given the task of planning a school activity day to raise funds to buy a Shelterbox. Christmas Party - Tuesday 18th December
Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull in competition (successful) at Kinnoull Bowling Club. Calendar News The monthly draws for 2018 can also be found on our website and our Facebook page. The September Draw brings us three-quarters of the way through the Calendar year. Shelterbox in Bangladesh Shelterbox have written to thank all their supporters who have made the humanitarian aid possible to support the Rohingya Refugees. The aid was shipped to Chittagong, Bangladesh, in support of the refugees coming over from Myanmar in their thousands and those communities that have been devastated by flooding. Gavel v Glenrothes Wednesday 3rd October
Speakers 4th Sep Janet Reay, Trading Standards 18 Sep Rhiannon Nash RYLA Candidates 25 Sep Donna Bednarek CLIK Sargent - Donna Bednarek gave a very informative talk on Tuesday about the charity CLIK Sargent, the leading children s cancer charity in the UK. The origins of the charity lie in the 2005 merger of two former charities, Cancer and Leukaemia in Children and the Sargent Cancer Care for Children founded in memory of Sir Malcolm Sargent. Donna, who runs the Scottish part of the charity, explained the need to act after a child has been diagnosed with cancer. Someone should be there to meet the family and give support during treatment which can only happen at the Glasgow or Edinburgh hospitals. She added that the charity s principle is helping young lives to thrive not just survive. To this end, the charity provided home from home accommodation near the hospitals. But of course all this comes at a cost and Donna highlighted the fact that the charity receives all its income from public donations. She is also able to lead from the front and do her bit as well as she is participating in the Scottish Run at the weekend on behalf of the charity. She is very proud of the charity s track record with nearly six hundred supported cases in Scotland. Rhiannon Nash was our guest on Tuesday evening. Rhiannon has been supported by the Club on her RYLA adventure this year. I suppose it would be fair to say that this young woman standing in front of the particular audience served up on that Tuesday showed exactly why RYLA is such a serious part of our work. Her confidence shown through her delivery was exceptional for one so young. Rhiannon explained how her week at Abernethy with the RYLA organisers unfolded day by day. Split into seven groups, all the RYLA candidates approached a variety of events in outdoor leadership. Each day began at 7.15 am and lasted for an exhausting time up to 10 pm stretching everyone s mental and physical ability. She said how much fun everything was right up to the last day of hillwalking when everyone was so tired. Her particular pleasure was to be able to show her group how to navigate effectively. In the Abernethy Challenge she was commended on her personal endeavour. Rhiannon returns to her place at Perth High School where she said she has very little spare time. Not surprising as she is a young leader in scouting, plays hockey for Perthshire and undertakes voluntary work with the elderly. Most evenings she can be found as a Front of House assistant at either Perth Concert Hall or Perth Theatre. I feel that it is fair to say that the Club Members have been introduced to an exceptional young lady. President s Dinner- Friday 22nd February 2019
Janet Reay - Hitting Back At The Scammers Every now and then, we have a speaker who brings the real world to life in an exciting way. This was certainly true of Janet Reay, Trading Standards Officer for Perth and Kinross, in her presentation on current scams. Janet has a lot of experience of such operators having worked for many years, qualifying firstly in her home town of Sunderland and latterly in Fife. Since 1996, she has been taking care of the good residents of Perth across a wide range of problems from electrical goods to legal highs. Janet explained that scams were defined as misleading, deceptive or fraudulent marketing offers. Scams are touching everybody and affecting lives everywhere. Janet further added how the vulnerable people in our society were being preyed on mercilessly by sophisticated operators. The effect is to cause social isolation and embarrassment. Scams have become more evident since the wide use of the internet made people more available to contact from anywhere in the world. They fit into one of three categories bogus letters, telephone calls and s. Janet detailed the problems with each category and the best way to deal with them; never give anyone your pin number as that action breaks your contract with the bank. Her talk provided the Members with practical guidelines and useful tips with a list of phone numbers for further help and advice. Lastly, Janet explained how she had set up a special unit to identify who is being targeted by the scammers. The problem here is that people can be drawn in and become addicted. Her work has been very successful in supporting many people in Perth, work that was very much appreciated by Bob Reid as he thanked Janet for her talk.
Perth Rotary s Annual 3 Club + Putter was held on the Wee Course at Blairgowrie. Shona Weir is here collecting the trophy on behalf of Perth St Johns from Graham Thom of the Perth Club. The Edinburgh Trophy On Wednesday 12th September, Kinnoull Bowling Club kindly allowed the three Rotary Clubs in Perth to vie for the Edinburgh Trophy. Two teams of four bowlers represented each club in a Round Robin format. There were nine games, each of 5 ends. Two points for a win and one point for a draw. Eighteen points to play for. Perth Kinnoull earned seven points, Perth St Johns six points and Perth five points thereby Perth Kinnoull defended and retained the trophy. The officials of Kinnoull Bowling Club were thanked for their hospitality and indicated that they would be pleased to host the competition in Calendar Sales at the Farmer's Market 6th October 2018
Annual Golf Charity Day Once again in fine weather The Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull staged its Annual Golf Charity Day over 18 holes at Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club which, as usual, was excellently presented by Head Greenkeeper Graham Hutchison and his staff and proved to be a challenging test. The Strathallan Trophy for the best net score was won by the team from Brown s Pharmacy Health Care captained by Gordon Brown (pictured below). The Team Ball Competition was won by the team from Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club captained by Phillip Lambie having successfully brought home the team ball with the lowest net score. Peter Stewart of Anderson Beaton Lamond landed his ball nearest the white line on the 9th fairway while David Ramsay of Dirk s Waggers successfully landed his ball nearest the pin on the tricky 18th green. To cap off the day the catering staff at the golf club, led by Lorraine MacDonald, provided a buffet dinner of quality and quantity to satisfy the seventy-two hungry golfers. The Rotary Club of Perth Kinnoull wish to thank all those who participated on the day, sponsored holes and or provided prizes for the raffle. And lastly to Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club for allowing the use of their fine course.
Kinnoull Hill Barbecue 2018 Worldwide Veterinary Service We recently donated 500 to the Worldwide Veterinary Service, a UK registered charity helping animals in places where no one else can. We now know that the money will go directly to the Service work in Ooty in India and be used to relieve the suffering in equines. In addition, there is a need to educate the locals in good animal husbandry and welfare. WVS India was established in 2010 to improve animal health and welfare through veterinary skills. The WVS International Training Centre provides high quality surgical training courses for veterinarians. Monthly outreach clinics have improved the welfare of working donkeys in Southern India. A new training course has been established in Ooty called working equine health and welfare (WEHW) This year alone clinics have treated nearly 200 equines; outreach programs a further 1200 and emergency calls another 20. The most common emergencies are traffic accidents and colic due to plastic impaction. If you want further information contact RaceRunners Niamh Sandeman pictured with her dad, Charlie, lives in Longforgan and is studying Life Skills at Perth College. She has been involved with the Racerunners for 3 years and is an enthusiastic member of the club. Niamh is pictured at the North Inch event on Saturday 15th September riding the Racerunner trike purchased by our club,
