Tuggeranong Target The friendly community club supporting archers of all disciplines, Olympic to compound, medieval to traditional, catering for families, novices, the enthusiast and the disabled. 299 Soward Drive, Tuggeranong, ACT Volume 9, Issue 2 November 2015 From the AGM On the 22nd of November the Tuggeranong Archery Club held its AGM which was followed by a General Meeting. Both motions were endorsed Unanimously General committee - Ian MacKinnon, Robert Maguire, Michael Turner, by agreement - Rachel Morgan and Lou Redman, Reserve - Crae Kilby. The current holders following positions have agreed to continue in their roles: AACT Representatives - Ian MacKinnon, Rob Maguire, Kevin Watts, Derek Boothman, Mick Turner, Lou Redman Vikings Representatives - Kevin Watts, Gary Hobson Recorder - Rob Maguire Junior Representative - Cloe Brett Member Protection - Ian MacKinnon Public Officer - Kevin Watts Registrar - Chloe Brett Coaching Co-ordinator - Mick Turner Equipment Officer - Gary Hobson Range Captain - Mick Turner W/day Range Captain Tim Pitman Webmaster - Rob Maguire Groundskeeper - Ben Berry Hall Manager - Danni Crawford Media Liaison - Steve Caldicott From the General Meeting Four motions were put the meeting for the approval: Motion 1. The calendar was adopted by the meeting however it was noted that it may change due to changes to tournament dates and events/tournaments added through the year See the new Calendar which has been added at the end of this newsletter

From the General Meeting continued The following 3 motions for life memberships were all approved by a unanimous decision by the membership. These are the first life members to be approved by the membership under the new provisions as voted at the AGM. Motion 2 Michael Turner - Life Membership Michael is the reason for the Tuggeranong Archery Club s existence; he is the founding father of the club. Leading a very small group that broke away from Canberra Archery Club in the 90 s and is currently still heavily involved in many aspects of the club. The Tuggeranong Archery Club was started with equipment donated by Mick, most of which is still in the trailer today. He has held many positions within the club and many years as President. A keen barebow archer and field competitor; who has represented TAC, the ACT and Australia in many competitions In Australia and around the world. Mick was the inspiration for the target butts currently used by all members. He works tirelessly on the field course and promoting field archery. Motion 3 Steve Caldicott - Life Membership Steve held the position of President of the Tuggeranong Archery Club for 6 years, during which time he initiated the major construction which we all use today. He was the driving force behind the building of the Indoor Hall, Range layout, Shooting lines and floodlighting. Steve secured the funding and oversaw the design of the hall to bring the Club into the 21 st Century and up to international standard across the various archery formats. He secured the 2012 and 2013 National Competitions, making the holding of these competitions more financially viable. Thanks to Steve the Tuggeranong Archery Club is the envy of most other clubs in the country. Motion 4 Kevin Watts - Life Membership Kevin has been the backbone of the club since its creation, he has held nearly every position on the committee including many years as President. The majority of his time on the Committee he has been the Treasurer and thus responsible for making the club the success and envy of most archery clubs. He has worked tirelessly on obtaining many grants including working with Steve to obtain the grants for the Hall and range construction work. Being a builder by trade he managed the construction of the Indoor Hall and oversaw the acquittal arrangements with the ACT Government. He can often be found working behind the scenes building and repairing many of the clubs facilities.

TAC at Tournaments 2015 Steve Roberts Memorial Three Day Shoot A good and enthusiastic band of archers tested their skills in this year s Steve Roberts Memorial Shoot. This annual TAC event in held in memory of Steve Roberts, a member of Canberra Archery Club and also of the Society for Creative Anachronism under the name of Alfred Arrowsmith (his heraldic crest is shown left). Whilst Steve was not a member of TAC he is very fondly remembered by a number of longterm TAC members and was involved in the TAC field course setup in the early days. Steve had a philosophy that everyone who competes is a winner, hence all participants in the event named after him receive a commemorative glass tankard (shown right). Day 1 was a WA 24 Target Marked Field round, starting at mid-day and was shot in perfect weather conditions with the field itself in peak condition. A number of newer TAC archers took the opportunity to shoot a competition field round for the first time and get some tips and advice from the experienced archers on the day. Day 2 started with a WA 720 round providing archers from a number of clubs with the opportunity to claim WA classification medals and gain competition experience in a relaxed and social event. The afternoon saw the clout range get some use with some impressive scores put in, especially by Andrew Norrell who had never shout a clout before and managed to soundly beat Rob Maguire who was having trouble hitting the planet (until the last end). The last event of the tournament was held on Monday evening. An AUS combined indoor round over 25m and 18m. The highlight of this event was the shooting of two new National records (pending) for Rachel Morgan (589/600) and Crae Kilby (596/600). Both rounds significantly bettered the previous records and are testament to the quality of archery that these two TAC members are capable of. TAC would like to thank the judges (Steve Caldicott, Paul Smith, Greg Cox and Rob Maguire) who made sure the event was run to WA and AA standards. The Steve Roberts Memorial Shoot will return in The committee is considering moving the event to another date to try and attract larger fields from further away. Be sure to put it in your diary. - Robert Maguire November 2015 Double Header A good turnout to the November Double Header saw from a number of clubs compete over two days in a mixed discipline shoot consisting of a WA 24 Target Marked Field round on Saturday and a double 720 round on Sunday. The field kicked off mid-morning with ideal conditions for field archery of bright sun and a very light cooling breeze.

November 2015 Double Header - continued The course itself was a bit woolly due to the recent heavy rains followed by days of sunshine resulting in lush growth on the tracks and on some of the target lanes. Nothing that the intrepid band of archers couldn t handle. The event saw a number of relative newcomers tackle the field course including Mark Bartlett (CAC, normally a compounder) who shot his beautiful new Spigarelli barebow for the first time. Another highlight of the event was seeing Pete Marchant (TAC - pictured right) shoot a field round for the very first time using a modified (blade-less) ride-on lawn mower for mobility. It must have suited him because he shot a field all gold on his very first target. Pete normally shoots target from a wheelchair and having the opportunity to get around the field course provided a whole new dimension for him. The ride-on was specially converted by his mate Ben Berry (TAC s very own Groundskeeper Willie). Day 2 was a double 720 target featuring most of the archers from day 1 shooting two WA 720 rounds on the main range. Conditions were good as well with only a minor breeze stirring up in the afternoon. Both rounds went smoothly with some good scores being shot (and some ordinary ones too). The rounds were punctuated in the middle by the TAC Annual General Meeting that saw the 2016 committee members elected and the passing of a motion to create a life membership category going forward. The main range was in good condition thanks to a day of mowing by club vicepresident Ian Crawford. Despite this Michael Rowley (Griffith Archers) still managed to lose an arrow on the main range. It was eventually recovered but took half a dozen attempts to find it including the club metal detector. The club itself is in tip-top condition, despite the growth on the field course, and the TAC committee and comp committee are hoping to run more double headers in Double Headers are run as WA registered events meaning that archers can claim WA medals and arrowheads. THE 2016 NATIONAL ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS This year TAC had 5 representatives attending the National Championships in Morwell, Lou Redman, Crae Kilby, Rachel Morgan, Glen Hunt and Mark Bartlett (pictured right) The first shooting day was the Short Range (60/900), with the girls shooting in the morning and the boys in the afternoon. Lou managed to equal both the Nationals and Tournament record with a score of 880, while Rachel was edged out for 3 rd by one point. Crae shot the same score as Lou, managing a top-ten placing, while Glen and Mark were 14 th and 21 st respectively (not bad for their first ever Nationals). The second day was FITA target for the girls and field for the boys. The weather changed from the first day with high winds and rain. The field course consisted of12 targets that were in the open with a few hills, while the second 12 were in the bushland on and flat. Crae managed 3 rd place in the field with a good score of 387, while Glen and Mark were 22 nd and 23 rd respectively.

THE 2016 NATIONAL ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS - continued On the target range things weren t much better. Lou struggled in the conditions, while Rachel managed to lead for 3 of the 4 distances, being edged out by one point on the last distance. The last day was Field for the girls and FITA target for the boys. The wind decided to do a complete 180 from the day before and the rain stayed away. Crae was holding 3 rd place until the final distance, the wind grabbing a shot and the arrow scored low. He ended up in 7 th place (yes one arrow cost 4 places). Mark and Glen ended up 22 nd and 26 th respectively. In the field, Rachel and Lou tried their hardest in the conditions, but could only manage 3 rd (Lou) and 4 th (Rachel). The ACT Compound Team achieved 2 nd place in the Teams Event. This consists of the top three scores from Male and Female Compound. Attending the Nationals is a good way to make friends all over the country and learn different perspectives about archery and shooting. - Rachel Morgan Don t forget the Christmas shoot on the 20th of December Come along and join in the festivities with plenty of fun activities and shooting on the day.

Tuggeranong Archery Club Working Bee In January we will be conducting a working bee weekend to repack the remainder of the butts, we are hoping to have several teams so we can repack several butts at once, the more helpers the more we can get done. It would be fantastic to start the new season with freshly packed butts. If you can spare some time keep a eye out in December and January for the Bugs Eye newsletters for the dates and times.
