1 Richard Hale School Science and Engineering Academy DOCTRINA CVM VIRTVTE 13 th October 2017 Dear Parents Duke of Edinburgh s Gold Award presentations 31 former Richard Hale students attended St James s Palace yesterday to receive their Gold Awards from the Earl of Wessex in a magnificent ceremony. Gathered in the same room where Mahatma Ghandi attended a round table conference on the future of India, the group listened to an entertaining and thoughtful speech from Chris Stark, Radio 1 DJ, before being presented to the Earl of Wessex and answering his questions in front of a proud set of parents. The point was made several times that it really is an exceptional achievement to have 3udents receiving this prestigious award at the same time. A typical number for schools in Hertfordshire would be counted on one hand. Another interesting statistic is that, out of the 6 million young people who have enrolled on the Bronze DofE since its inception over 60 years ago, only 270,000 have completed the Gold Award, a progression rate of just 4.5%. That so many RHS students have seen this arduous award through to its conclusion is a testimony to the motivation and enthusiasm of our students, the parental support at RHS, but also in particular to the tenacity and energy of Derek Clarke who was, I am sure, a very proud man yesterday. GSK Research and Development Centre Visit On Wednesday, 29 Year 13 students, who are studying A Level chemistry, visited the GSK Research and Development Centre at Ware. The visit included a talk on the background and theory of the science behind the discovery of pharmaceuticals. This was followed by a visit to the laboratories where the students were shown equipment used in the frontline of research into new medicines and educated on the sorts of analytical techniques that are directly linked to their syllabus. They also saw an NMR machine in action and got back the spectroscopic analysis of the Aspirin that they had made in school. GSK said our students were a delight to host, they were impressive with their knowledge, and how they engaged with the presentations and had produced some industry standard aspirin. We would like to express our gratitude to GSK for the visit and to Mrs Webster and Mrs Hilton who accompanied them. Rugby Results from matches against Brentwood: XV Won 51-7 U16A Won 55-5 U16B Won 54-0 U14A Won 46-0 U14B Won 82-0 U13A Won U13B Won U13C Won Report from the U15 NatWest Cup Rugby fixture against Samuel Whitbread Academy - after a long journey, which seemed to be never ending, we arrived at Samuel Whitbread full of anticipation. As we made our way to the pitch we could see the elements were going to play a part as it was an extremely windy afternoon. The boys started the match with a high tempo and were applying a lot of pressure. It didn t take long for Hale to break the opposition defense with a strong run by Alex Omole to run in under the posts. The match continued to pan out in this fashion with Hale in complete control throughout. A hat trick of tries from Alex Omole was complemented by tries from Miles Holding, Jamie Gutteridge, Freddie Hunter, Rhys Griffiths and Finley Sutherland. Captain Freddie Hunter kicked well in the conditions to convert 6 of the 8 tries. A superb performance all round and the boys are looking forward to a potential next round fixture against rivals Bishops Stortford. 2 Report from the XV third round of the Schools Cup against Seevic College - Richard Hale were under no illusion that this was not going to be an easy game. The previous week Seevic had beaten Oaklands College (partnership of Saracens Academy) The game kicked off and it was evident to see that Seevic wanted to use their size and power to bully and dominate Hale. This was not to be the case; every Hale player on that field put their body on the line to ensure Seevic had to work to their maximum to cross that gainline. Hale defended for the first ten mins; defending the ongoing Seevic attack butwith fantastic breakdown work and defence organisation to force turnovers and clear the danger. The first time Hale had the opportunity to attack; they were clinical and exploited mismatches. Confidence grew and the team realised to beat this physical Seevic team the ball had to be moved. The control of Harry Holman at 10 was outstanding. He ensured the boys maintained the flow in attack; kicked for territory and moved the ball at the right time. There was a spell of 10 minutes where Hale scored 20 unanswered points. Destructive lines from Riddle, Gilchrist, Waller. The pace of Hunter to round his opposite man. The control and intensity from all of the Hale pack both in the tight and loose could not be matched by Seevic. HT 26 5 Seevic received clear instructions at half time to rough up the opposition. Hale were not phased nor intimidated by this and continued to stick to their patterns of play supported with tempo and intensity. The heart and passion in defence continued to grow as Seevic piled on more pressure; but the turnovers from Hale, in particular Gilchrist, Jones and Stone allowed Hale to be on the attack and exploit mismatches. Clinical play in attack, sublime handling and attacking the mismatches allowed Hale to get front ball and make positive yards. Seevic started to tire but remained a very direct and physical team throughout. An extremely positive and pleasing performance for which Hale to continue to build. FT Hale now face Hayes School from Bromley in the round. Proving that hard work pays off, he s also been selected for the ITCA National Squad for autumn and winter training at various locations across the UK, including the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, home of the 2012 Olympic Sailing events. Steffan Jones, Year 13, has been selected for the Hertfordshire Under 18 rugby squad for their forthcoming county board matches.
