7 ANNUAL MARYMOUNT HOSPICE COF- FEE MORNING IN SHANAGARRY The Annual Marymount Hospice Coffee Morning will be held in The Goalpost Bar, Shanagarry on Friday 23rd September from 10am to 12.30pm. We will also hold a raffle that morning. Please come and join us for a coffee, some delicious cakes and a chat and raise some funds for this very worthy cause on our 11th year of hosting this fundraiser. If you would like to help in any way please contact Carrie (086) 'Trace' An exhibition of drawings, paintings and prints by Judy O'Sullivan at The Courtyard Gallery, Midleton, Co. Cork September 2011, Tues - Sat and pm. Admission free The exhibition will be formally opened by Clare Hennessy, Director Cork Printmakers on Saturday 17th September at 2.30 pm (All welcome) In her new work Judy O'Sullivan is experimenting with drawing processes, extending boundaries through photography and print. She focuses on familiar surroundings, a chair, a window, a shadow on a wall, something the cat brings in, footprints in mud, the patterns in hedgerows. These are the marks of everyday life, often unnoticed, to which we give little attention. A central aspect in the making of the work was exploring the Japanese idea, 'mono no aware', literally 'the pathos of things', the awareness of their impermanence and transience and wistfulness their passing. 'The work grew from my reflections on different aspects of my mother's life. I tried to make use of her gift for always seeing wonder in the small, the ordinary and everyday. She kept for me things other people might have thrown out, knowing I might find magic in an old piece of lace or fabric, a feather or things that held memories. Making a drawing holds onto the momentary experience, freezing the moment. The drawing holds our reflections and feelings making something concrete of the encounter with the object.' Clare based artist Judy O'Sullivan grew up in Carrigtwohill, Co Cork and is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and UCC. She has exhibited regularly in solo and selected group exhibitions over the last ten years including Tallaght Community Arts Centre, Dublin; Cork Art Trail; Beara Arts Festival; Iontas at Sligo Art Gallery; Glór Centre, Ennis, Co Clare; Clare Co Council Offices; Wicklow Co. Council Offices. Her work was shown in an Bhoireann the international exhibition 2006 at Galerie Pomie, Baladou, France. Dress Drawings 2009, which included a large wall drawing and media installation was selected to show at the Courthouse Gallery and Studios, Co Clare. This is her third exhibition at the Courtyard Gallery. As well as private collections her work is in the collection of Clare County Council. 8 Painting Exhibition at Ina McCarthy For Flowers Junior Certificate Results at St Aloysius College Artists pictured at the opening of Chrysalis the first exhibition of paintings by 21 artists from Phil Davis Workshops On Monday night the 5th September, "Ina McCarthy for Flowers", Main Street Midleton, hosted the opening of "Chrysalis", the first exhibition of paintings by 21 artists attending the workshops of Ballycotton artist Phil Davis. The night was a huge success with over one hundred people present and several paintings being sold on the night. With so many painters involved, the diversity of subjects and styles was huge, ranging from seascapes and landscapes to interpretations of works by Monet and Sisley, a painting of a jazz musician on a roof slate and an abstract work aptly called "Corrupt Planning". Most of the artists involved have only been painting a few years so it was great credit to them that they were prepared to put themselves out there for all to see, and not a few of them were very nervous about it, however once paintings started to sell the nerves seemed to settle. Thanks are due to Ina and Rachel McCarthy for the wonderful venue and their enthusiasm and encouragement. Anybody wishing to hold an exhibition can contact them on If you would like to learn to paint or improve your painting skills, Phil holds regular classes in Shanagarry and can be contacted on or phildavis@iol.ie Top students Maebh Murphy & Tara O'Brien who received 11 A's in their Junior Certificate Students pictured with Tony Lee Principal Students Ellen McCarthy & Ellen Spring with Donal O'Murchu CHADWICKS Donal O'Murchu with eagerly awaiting students to received their Junior Cert Results Autumn Specials 4 Piece Bathroom set 89 MIRA Jump 179 Full Range of Stoves starting from 349 Lamiate Flooring from 6 sq yd We also hire & sell power tools & scaffolding Stockists of Premium Polish Coal Delighted students pictured after receiving their results All smiles as students receive their Junior Cert Results

Women In Business Seminar This Wednesday A word now for all ladies involved in business circles. In Cobh a new networking group has been established specifically for women in business and it meets on a regular basis. This Wednesday their latest event takes place in the Sirius Arts Centre and will specifically look at financial management for growing your business. The gust speaker will be Mary Power of Westboro Partners who recently completed a Diploma in Forensic Accounting with Chartered Accountants Ireland. The event is part of the SECAD Catalyst project which provides opportunities for women to build connections with other business women in the East Cork region. Remember you do not have to be from Cobh to become involved. To book your place at this evening's seminar please call or info@cobhharbourchamber.ie. Shanagarry Fund Raisers Margaret Crowley will host her annual coffee morning in aid of Marymount Hospice at the Goalpost Bar in Shanagarry on this Friday morning from 10am to 12.30pm. No doubt there will be plenty of delicious home baking to compliment the teas and coffee. It's now 11 years since the inception of this fund raiser which has always received great support from the people of Shanagarry and surrounding areas. Whilst the weather will not alter plans for Friday, unfortunately it played it's part in the minds of Shanagarry ICA when hosting their recent picnic in aid of the county Kildare based charity Barretstown. The hard working local committee decided to move indoors (well almost) to transform a local farm shed and make it a picnic with a difference. With creamy cakes, delicious desserts, tea and coffee all served and the back drop of specially decorated surroundings the venture proved a roaring success. Over 500 euro was raised and a great time was had by all who visited. Certainly'food for thought' for many such groups, who may be wary of those leaden skies. Well done to all in Shanagarry! Miah's Coffee Morning Saturday next at Midleton Rugby Club will also see well known Midleton business man Miah McGarth host a fund raising coffee morning in aid of the third world charity Orbis. Miah is in fact is in training to take part in Africa's biggest road race, the Great Ethiopian Run on November 27 and hopes to raise in the region of 3,000 euro for Orbis. Good support on Saturday would certainly be a major step in the right direction. Orbis is dedicated to the treatment and prevention of blindness on the developing world and since it was founded in 1982 has worked tirelessly to achieve it's goal. With a focus on teaching and training, Orbis has to date carried out more than 1,000 sight saving programmes and treated more than 10 million people world wide. Currently Orbis Ireland is focussed on one major project - to eliminate a highly prevalent and life destroying blinding disease called trachoma, in some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia by Thus your support would be greatly appreciated at Saturday's coffee morning, the entire proceeds from which will go directly towards this appeal. Miah will be delighted to see you at the Rugby Club where teas, coffee and no doubt tasty delights await. Culture Night In East Cork There is plenty to do in East Cork on this Friday to celebrate Culture Night as a full range of diverse activities appear in the social calendar. The good news is that all are absolutely free so it is very much a case of being spoilt for choice. Mary Peddar-Daly will be in St John the Baptist Church in Killeagh for a lunch time recital between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. Mary promises a selection of songs and short stories. The renowned Ogham Players will be on stage in Ballynoe from 9pm until 10.30pm where readings, recitation, stories and chat are all on the menu. Out and about the Midleton Concert Band will perform for an outdoor concert from 7pm to 8.30pm at the Baby's Walk, whilst also making music in Midleton will be the Cobh Confraternity Brass & Reed Band who will be at Market Green Shopping Centre between 7pm and 8.15pm. Meantime at the local Library the Midleton Writers' Group are due to host a pleasant evening of readings and later results of the their writing competition will also be announced. Still in Midleton you are invited to 'The Jameson Experience' at the Distillery with a number of tours organised from 6pm onwards. There is a performance by the prize winners from the Feile an tsamhraid Feis taking place at St John Baptist Church, which will run for ninety minutes from 8pm. Next stop is Ballymaloe Grain Store. Here a night of lively dance is ensured with hip hop, ballet and Irish dancing due to feature from 7pm onwards. Dancing will also to the fore at Cobh Heritage Centre at 5pm, whilst nearby Cobh Museum will also open from 3pm onwards. Staying by the sea but moving to Youghal, amongst the many interesting events taking place will be a Youghal Carpets Exhibition. So overall a packed programme of attractions fro all the family and all free of charge. Denis At Midleton Library It seems as if Midleton Library will be a busy place his weekend as on Saturday next Ballynoe man Denis O'Sullivan will bring his renowned GAA collection to town. Denis is the ultimate collector of GAA team pictures, memorabilia and in particular all things associated with the great Christy Ring. At a recent similar exhibition held in Bishopstown Library Denis got the expected tremendous reaction when hurling followers including new Cork boss Jimmy Barry Murphy inspected his marvellous collection all of which is in meticulous condition. DVD and audio cassettes also add greatly to this unrivalled gathering which wil be at Midleton Library for one day only on this Saturday - no sports fan should miss it. Denis O'Sullivan from Ballynoe will visit Midleton Library with his much coveted GAA collection on this Saturday. Cheer On The Runners Sunday week October 2nd is going to quite a sporting day with both Carrigtwohill and Fr O Neill's hurlers chasing county titles. However, much earlier inthe day there will be plenty of activity on the road from Cork to Cobh as the annual 15 mile road race takes place under Cork BHAA rules. The race begins from the City at 9.30am and should see runners arriving in the harbour town during late morning and early afternoon. Support is always appreciated by runners and help is always required by the organisers for this big event. If you can assist with stewarding please call Kevin Cummins on Gardeners - Please Help Midleton Hospital Midleton Community Hospital wants to create it's very own flower garden and you can help - in fact they need your help. Deirdre Carr has been in touch form the Hospital to say that on Saturday week October 1st, volunteers are required between 10am and 4pm to help create this garden. It's a case of turning up armed with the necessary tools and getting to work. A few hours could go along way in creating something special for our local Community Hospital. Tidy Towns Committee Still writing with green fingers, Midleton Tidy Towns committee have organised a social evening at East Cork Golf Club on Saturday October 8th.Tickets are priced at 10 euro. Finger food will be served and entertainment provided. The Tidy Towns group have done splendid work during the summer months, but would greatly appreciate more assistance with further projects. 11 LISGOOLD REACH FINAL OF EAST CORK JUNIOR FOOTBALL Lisgoold reach East Cork JAFC Final Glenbower Rovers Meet Carraig na bhfear In Second Semi Final Lisgoold footballers will contest the Michael O Connor Motor Factors Junior A Grade Football Championship Final this weekend following their eight points win over Carrigtwohill in Sunday s semi final. This will be a significant landmark for a developing club who have made considerable progress in both football and hurling in recent years. In fact, this evening the club s minor footballers are in county semi final action when they host Tracton in a game which begins at 6.30pm. Meantime opposition for the junior footballers will not be known until after the second semi final which brings together Glenbower Rovers and Carraig na bhfear this evening. Please note the date and time for the big match will be finalised following the second semi-final which takes place on this evening (Wednesday) Best wishes to both teams in The East Cork Football Final From Michael O'Connor Motor Factors Glanmire Business Park, Glanmire Tel: (021) Proud Sponsors of The East Cork Football Championship Best Wishes To Lisgoold In The East Cork Football Final From Woods Bar & Quik-Pick Best Wishes To Lisgoold In The East Cork Football Final Liam Walshe Hurley Maker We also sell Cúchulainn & Ash Leaf Sliothars (087) Junior A Football Championship Lios gcul 3.12 Carrigtwohill 2.07 All Ireland Football Final day dawned bright and calm, oblivious, somewhat, to the battle that would ensue when two great sets of warriors would go toe to toe in the latest installment of their fabled, historic and almost mystical football rivalry. But, in the hours to throw in, the players and supporters of Lisgoold and Carrigtwohill could afford to be distracted by the curtain raiser to their encounter, featuring Dublin and Kerry in Croke Park. When the dust settled in Dublin 3, the shorter journey to Ballinacurra brought us to the penultimate round of Football Championship '11. Neighbours Carrigtwohill were our foes on this occasion, and our admiration for their small ball successes were put aside for an hour or so. The weather gods had decreed that our football entertainment would be accompanied by a fresh breeze down the beautifully prepared Pairc na ngael pitch, which made accurate passing and shooting a trifle difficult. Bereft of the honeymooning Eoin O'Riordan, manager Tim Mulcahy reshuffled his pack with John Cronin and Brian Clifford handed the gansais bearing 8 & 9. Up front, Jer O'Connell would lead the offensive orchestra from the '40, while Charlie McCarthy would replace the injured Mike O'Shea in the first line of defense. The breeze advantage was with our opponents for the opening period, a half that our boys dominated, and after which we led by 0.08 to 0.05 with the superb John McCarthy bossing affairs throughout. The second period was a strange affair, one in which Carrig dominated for periods, and one in which we scored three goals, all "on the break" and somewhat against the run of play. Each goal ( a smasher by John Mc, a calm finish by veteran Kevin O'Shea and a last minute score by John Cronin) seemed to be the cue to finish off our neighbours, but back they came again and again. We were thankful for the last ditch defending from Brian O'Leary and the deep lying Patrick O'Mahony to mop up and wrap up victory. The Final is scheduled for next Sunday, where our opponents will be either Carrig na bhfearr or Glenbower Rovers. Junior C Hurling Championship Lios gcul 1.03 Castlemartyr 1.16 Our second string entered, and exited, Championship fare for 2011 at Rostellan on Tuesday, despite a gallant effort against a more balanced and well rounded Castlemartyr side. Deprived of some players due to an unfortunate clash with a football challenge played at the same time, Mike Woods side blended youth and experience, but failed to match the overall strength and guile of our opponents. A cracking goal by the excellent Denis O'Brien bridged the gap somewhat, but our opponents ran out deserved victors, despite the best efforts of skipper Anthony McCarthy, Mike Savage and veteran Donal O'Leary ( who certainly rolled back the years with a vintage display ) who starred for the Blues. 12 LISGOOLD REACH FINAL OF EAST CORK JUNIOR FOOTBALL /Lisgoold Notes Continued And Finally... Congratulations to Donagh Weisman of Castletwonbere, winner of the All Ireland Final draw, sponsored by Watertech. Donagh won overnight accommodation in a top Dublin hotel and two tickets for Dublin v Kerry on Sunday... Well done to all our Under 10 superstars of the future who graced Pairc Ui Chaoimh in a tremendous display on Wednesday. All of the players who took part should be proud of their performances, including Cathal Hickey, Robbie Kinnane, Luke Walsh, Declan O'Brien and James O'Driscoll, each of whom was excellent, but the score of the night came from young Sayef Ziad who scored a fantastic point on the run that any of the famous senior players who've graced this venue down the years would've been proud of. It will surely not be the last time that some of these lads play in The Pairc.... The building which has been in use since 1991 urgently requires an upgrade in order to bring it into line with modern building standards and regulations so that the services it provides can be delivered more efficiently and effectively. The decision to demolish the existing building was taken with some regret as for many years it had been the location for the provision of many essential Family Support Services, including child care, Breakfast Club, After School activities, as well as being used as a centre for Adult Education Classes. Until recently it was also the base for the Public Health Nursing Services. The old building will be replaced by a purpose built building which will house the services provided in the existing building as well a new community pre-school. It is hope to open the new building next spring. YOUGHAL CELEBRATES HISTORY 9th. 15 COUNTY SENIOR HURLING FINAL SPECIAL CARRIGTWOHIIL BID FOR THE ULTIMATE PRIZE VERSUS C.I.T. - SUNDAY WEEK OCTOBER 2ND Big Match Countdown Feature Words - John Cashman Photos - Eddie O'Riordan It may be still be well over a week away but Carrigtwohill is already on countdown mode to the 2011 County Senior Hurling Championship Final against C.I.T at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. The achievements of this year's team are sure to pass into legend whatever happens on the return journey to headquarters. Their four straight wins over Ballinhassig, Muskerry, Cloyne and Midleton have suddenly thrust this proud club into the forefront of the game in the county and much further afield. Began In June What began in early June at Pairc Ui Rinn as a testing first round encounter against Ballinhassig has plummeted into the most wonderful hurling story, a story of heroic deeds, unbelievable character and sublime skill which has put Carrig' on the door step of County Hurling Final glory. C.I.T Impress Make no mistake the exploits of opponents C.I.T, set to compete in their very first final, have also made marvellous reading. Here is a side laced with talented young hurlers who like Carrigtwohill have grown in stature with every passing minute of every game. They go in this novel final pairing as the bookmaker's choice after completing an emphatic semi final destruction of a Newtownshandrum team who only a few weeks earlier had eliminated defending champions Sarsfields. Thus nobody involved with the Carrig' camp is any doubt about the task that awaits them on Sunday week. Amazing Journey Carrigtwohill's march to the final has been an amazing journey for players, mentors and supporters. Looking down from the stands over the summer months parents, friends and family have no doubt said many a prayer as their heroes took every step forward on a road never travelled. It was in almost every game 'heart in the mouth stuff' as the clocked ticked towards the hour. Pride, passion and a never say attitude were attributes that always shone though in those nerve tingling moments as the impossible dream moved a millimetre closer with every passing minute. Carrigtwohill is about to be painted blue and gold as big match fever reaches fever pitch. The hurlers' heroics have brought the entire community together in a common bond of goodwill and a recognition of what for everybody is a brand new experience. The feel good factor throughout the area is tangible, something that brings people of all ages together on a journey which they all hope will conclude in a land of a golden sky. Really Special Feeling True, men such as the great Willie John Daly and current club President Eddie O'Riordan and their generation have fresh minds and memories of legendary story lines concerning the great Carrig' teams of yesteryear. True, fellow selector Sean Barrett vividly recalls the joy of winning back to back county senior medals with Imokilly. But, this is different, this is Carrig' in 2011, this is something really special. "It's something which I thought I would never see says Eddie O'Riordan", who is born and bred in Carrig' and has blue and gold blood running through his veins. " This is fantastic for the area", commented the man who has served his beloved club in almost every capacity through the corridors of time including a 20 year stint as secretary. The team have been absolutely wonderful this season. At the start I suppose we were all just looking at round one and hoping to win and secure our senior status, but it has just taken off from there. Please God we can go on and win it now, it would

Please God we can go on and win it now, it would be unbelievable for everybody", concluded the man who took over the President's role following the retirement of Willie John Daly. Inspiring Coach James O'Connor and his back room team have done a wonderful job in master minding the Carrigtwohill success story. Knowing the people invovled they will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to achieve the ultimate prize. The task is a great one, but the guys involved are also great. We extend every good wish to one and all and here's hoping the bonfires will blaze higher than ever on Sunday week to welcome the Sean Og Murphy Cup to Carrig'. 17 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Carrig' Fans Keep In Touch From A Far Senior Hurling Roll of Honour Carrigtwohill fans around the globe are planning to return home for Sunday weeks' county hurling final. Whilst it's possible for some to make hasty arrangements not everybody who would like to travel are in a position to travel. During this championship summer we have been delighted to acknowledge fans all over the world during the course of live championship action on C103. Local matches are now just a computer key away on and it seems as if alarm clocks are regularly set at all hours of the morning in order to hear the action. Holidays too have played their part even 'The Bishop' was on foreign lands for the semi final. No doubt with a final on the horizon thoughts of early October vacations have been put on the back burner for all Carrig' fans. Remember to keep an ear to Saturday Morning Sport 11am on Saturday week for the build up to both the Intermediate and Senior finals. Of course, both games will be broadcast live during Cork's Sports Sunday on C103 and on on Sunday October 2nd. In the meantime if you want pictures and sound, a visit to Billy Dineen at Carrigtwohill D.I.Y is the way to go. Billy has dvd's of all Carrig's games this season and of course will also be covering the decider extensively. Give Billy a call on Colm O'Connell Chasing The Double - Just Like 'The Students! Colm O'Connell Carrigtwohill's stylish wing back is of course on a double mission over the next few weeks because as well as helping Carrig' to the hurling final he has also played a big part in assisting surprise packets Avondhu reach the senior football semi final. The Killavullen man has had a hectic summer with Avondhu involved in a marathon campaign which included a shock win over defending champions Nemo Rangers in the quarter final. Avondhu face UCC on Saturday next in the semi final double bill at Pairc UI Rinn, with the students hoping they can match the exploits of their counter parts from CIT by reaching a senior county decider. Here's hoping the double celebrations will all be about Colm O'Connell as he bids to carve out a distinction niche in the Cork GAA circles by winning two senior medlas in one year. 19 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Noel Furlong Will Be Keeping An Ear Out For Fr O Neill s Cheers The words, heroic, inspirational and magnificent were all used regularly to describe the performance of Carrigtwohill s outstanding centre back Noel Furlong in recent championship matches. Noel has for so many years been the heart beat of the Carrig defence in good and not so good times, the man in the distinctive white helmet has stood out like a beacon in the pivotal position. On Sunday week, whilst he and his colleagues are making final preparations before running out onto Pairc Ui Chaoimh, two of Noel s first cousins will be hoping to help Fr O Neill s win their Intermediate crown for the second time in four years. The much awaited rematch of the 2007 final against Bandon takes place immediately before Carrig s clash with C.I.T and both Ger O Leary and Eoghan McCarthy are set o be key figures in what promises to be a mouth watering contest. Ger has led the scoring stakes for O Neill s as they overcame Meelin, Ballygarvan and most recently Milford en route to Pirc Ui Chaoimh. Eoghan began the semi final match at midfield before being moved to wing back where he played a staring role in halting danger man Seanie O Connell.. On the sideline Noel O Driscoll, uncle of Ger, Eoghan and Noel Furlong will be hoping to see his three nephews collect county medals on the same day. Noel is serving as a selector this season in a new look back room team headed by Robbie Dalton. But that brings us to one of Carrigtwohill s greatest fans Ballymacoda native, Noreen Furlong mother of Noel and aunt of both Ger and Eoghan. From her Carrig home she can see all that happens just over the wall as Carrig step up their preparations under the bright flood lights. On Sunday week, she will be hoping like many more from the region that East Cork teams can complete a famous double. Keep the faith Noreen and keeping saying those prayers! Regarding the Intermediate Final Bandon have been very impressive in recent outings defeating both Aghada in a replay and St Catherine s in the semi final. After losing the 2007 final to Fr O Neill s they also lost the final twelve months on and are very determined to avoid an unwanted third final defeat in five seasons. They started both the aforementioned matches without two regular members of half back line, who are likely to be both pressing for recalls. However, Fr O Neill s have been through an epic campaign, beginning with an extra time win over reigning All Ireland Junior Champions Meelin. They then got the better of Ballygarvan in a high scoring quarter final before staging a memorable late rally to over turn a deficit of 8 points which existed early in the second half. Those resilient qualities may help them complete what we hope will be a Imokilly double. 20 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Carrigtwohill Scoring Stat's Mickey 'Da' Leads The Way Mickey 'Da' Fitzgerald leads the way in the Carrigtwohill scoring stakes en route to the county final. The man who kept goal for Carrig' in the Premier Intermediate Championship winning campaign 4 seasons ago has tallied with 2-17 of his teams overall tally of 3-59 from four matches played. Micky 'Da' scored his team's all important goal in the quarter final win over Cloyne, whilst despite injury proved he had the killer touch by rattling the net in the semi final success against Midleton. Converting goals and points to averages, the current top marksman has weighed in with an average of over 5.5 points per match. Robert White who found the net and added four points in the first round success over Ballinhassig is Michael Fitzgerald who wore the goalkeeper's jersey in the 2007 PIHC Final win is now the team's top score in the 2011 Senior Championship. the team's second top scorer with He is followed by influential long range free taker Tomas Hogan on 0-12 and the inspirational Niall McCarthy whose 0-5 contribution on Sunday week last almost doubled his standing total which stood at 0-6 going into the penultimate round. In total seven players have found the target for Carrigtwohill in this championship season with the aforementioned quartet finding the target in all four matches. ST. ALOYSIUS COLLEGE Congratulations and very best wishes to the CARRIGTWOHILL SENIOR TEAM in The County Senior Hurling Final From the Staff and Students of St. Aloysius College, Carrigtwohill. Go n-éirí go gael libh Niall McCarthy his 0-5 contribution has brought his total to 0-11 in this season's championship. The overall scoring chart reads as follows - Michael Fitzgerald 2-17, Robert White 1-13, Tomas Hogan 0-12, Niall McCarthy 0-11, Daniel O'Mahony 0-4, Stephen Kidney 0-1, Brian Lordan 0-1 Tight Defence: Carrigtwohill's defence has apart from the quarter final against Cloyne been exceptionally mean. The backs conceded 0-14, 1-10 and 0-10 in their respective games outside of the Cloyne fixture and even allowing for the 3-12 scored by their opponents in the quarter final, the figures still look impressive. The nett total stands at 4-46, converting to an average of just over 1-11 per game. Close Encounters Interestingly the closeness of all matches in Carrigtwohill's campaign is graphically illustrated when one compares the scores for and scores against in the opponents net and 4-46 in the Carrig' net. The overall difference between scores for and against is thus just 10 points, following winning margins of 2 points, 3 points, 2 points and 3 points in the respective matches. Carrigtwohill had just survived their first championship experience of the season, holding on to a narrow advantage against Ballinhassig. Fans had just witnessed the ultimate game of two halves. Carrigtwohill were imperious in the opening thirty minutes, dominating in all sectors of the field and racing into a 1-13 to 0-5 lead by the change of ends. However, incredibly in the second period the East Cork men were held scoreless as Ballinhassig roared back in to the match. Delight and relief were the over riding emotions as James O'Connor led his team back in the dressing room. I.S. 199 : 1987 License No ISA. 117 Contact: Donal Harnedy Tel Mobile: Fax The result, especially given the fact that many regulars were on the injured list was of major significance for the club. Not alone had senior status been secured but quality had been witnessed in various areas of the pitch that suggested more positives could follow. Whilst the first round losers battled for progress and survival, Carrigtwohill moved on round 4 and went quietly about their business in advance of a tricky tie with Muskerry. But the aging of the summer was also significant for the injury crisis that had hit blue and gold. Jason Barrett, Ronan Power, Seamie O Farrell were amongt the early long term casualties on the list that was also to feature such notables as Andy Garde, team captain Brian Lordan, Mattie Foley and Sean Flannery. Best wishes to Carrigtwohill in the Final Getting over Muskerry in the face of such adversity was always going to be a big ask. The divisional side had made survived their tough early engagements before their clash with Carrig'. In a match that in some way reflected parts of the first game at the same venue, Carrigtwohill supporters were taken on a roller coaster of emotions before their strength of mind and body saw them edge another very close hour turning a 0-11/0-6 interval lead into a 0-16/1-10 winning margin. On wards and upwards went the blue and gold bandwagon to a first visit of the season to Pairc Ui Chaoimh where Cloyne awaited following their thrilling win over Glen Rovers at the same venue. Expectation was this would mirror the two previous rounds - close, tight and exciting. It materialised exactly that way but differed in the score ratio. Mikey Walshe gave Cloyne a tonic start with an early goal. Carrig' held firm, gradually played themselves into the match and by half time, when leading by 0-10 to 1-4, had put forward a strong case for the right to play in the semi final. Cloyne replicated earlier events by flying out of the taps and regaining the initiative soon after the resumption, only to be pushed back by Carrig's new found belief and maturity. Robert White's move to wing forward was a master stroke as he hit a purple patch to fire his team into to what transpired to be a winning lead. Carrig' rattled in 1-7 in a glorious 12 minute period with Mickey 'Da' firing the all important goal.

24 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Class, character, guts and determination shone through blue and gold jerseys in abundance during the by now customary nerve tingling finale. Carrig heard the final whistle with the scoreboard reading at 1-20 to 3-12 in their favour. Scenes of great delight and joy were witnessed and young and not so young Carrig' fans set forth to greet their heroes. The hurling journey which began almost three months earlier was now by hitting high altitude and further climbing was just around the corner. Suddenly the county was taking notice of the new look Carrigtwohill, but at 14/1 to bring the Sean Og Murphy Cup home, had the bookmakers made the wrong call amongst the four horse field. CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Local derby matches take on a life of their own and after two epic matches in Castlemartyr a few summers back, who could be sure what was about to happen as Carrig' and Midleton fans journeyed up the N25 with hope in their hearts. With Ronan Power and Mattie Foley both fit to take their places in the full back line in the company of the impressive Pat O Sullivan. Michael Fitzgerald and Niall McCarthy both began despite injury concerns. Like the last round, Carrig' conceded early, going into a 0-4 to 0-1 deficit inside ten minutes. But panic has never been a word in the blue and gold vocabulary this season. The margin was soon obliterated and better was to follow. Niall Mac' switched to full forward produced 3 glorious points before assisting for Mickey Da' to crash home the games only goal after superb work by Robert White. Carrig' led 1-7 to 0-7 and as the saying goes 'the rest is history' - history that has been covered many times in the many hour since. A magnificent win highlighted by the brilliance of Noel Furlong at centre back and magnificence of Niall Mac' (here there and every where) However, by the end of sixty minutes, the by now customary injury set back had struck. This time impressive midfielder Daniel O'Mahony joining the casualty list. Scenes of great joy greeted the final shrill blast of the whistle, Carrigtwhohill had reached the final for the first time in 74 years. 17 years on from their County Junior triumph and just 4 years on from their Premier Intermediate title win, the team are now just 60 minutes away from writing the most famous chapter in their club's illustrious history. 28 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Match 24 Beckons For Carrigtwohill On County Final Day When Carrigtwohill took the field to meet Glen Rovers in early February for a pre season challenge fixture, nobody could have scripted the story line that was about to be told as the championship summer reached it's conclusion. Now almost 8 months and 23 matches later, the 'blue and gold' are preparing to take the field in the final of the Cork County Senior Hurling Championship. Whilst analysing results of challenge matches and even league matches can sometimes mean very little when dawn breaks on a championship morning, there is no denying that in a injury ravaged season the Carrigtwohill class of 2011 have already graduated with honours. In the aforementioned 23 matches played thus far, climaxing with the win over Midleton in the county senior championship semi final, Carrigtwohill have tasted defeat on only seven occasions. Forced to field on many occasions in challenge, league and championship matches without several regulars the team recorded a highly impressive fourteen wins and two draws. Further more of the seven reversals tasted the margin of defeat has been but one point on two occasions and been but three points on two more occasions. The record speaks volumes for the work and dedication of team coach James O'Connor, assistant Niall Kidney along with selectors Sean Barrett, Maurice O'Donoghue and Tomas O'Brien and the commitment shown by a tremendous group of players. Of course the biggest hour of the hurling season awaits and no doubt the CIT will be provide the biggest challenge with their very talented team. 29 COUNTDOWN UNDERWAY IN CARRIGTWOHILL FOR COUNTY SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL CARRIGWOHILL V C.I.T. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Semi Final Success - The Carrigtwohill Verdict From The P.R.O's Pen Carrigtwohill 1-10 Midleton 0-10 Carrigtwohill Senior hurlers are through to the SENIOR HURLING COUNTY FINAL!! - achieved by beating Midleton in a titanic semi-final battle against the odds on Sunday. Carrig powered to victory courtesy of a dogged second half performance against the strong winds associated with recent hurricane Katia, winning on a score line 1-10 to The campaign to date has been described as a perfect storm - borrowing from recent financial meltdown jargon - and Carrig stayed on course despite a rocky start. Midleton opted to play against the gale force wind from the off - but were quicker to settle and raced into an early 4 point to 1 lead. Mickey Da had got Carrig on the board from a close in free. Luke Farrell, Conor Lehane and Pa White were all on the score sheet for Midleton early on and it was backs to the wall stuff for Carrig despite the wind advantage. Ronan Power had made a welcome return from injury, and deputised for the unfortunate Andrew Gadre, who missed out on his second consecutive game. Ronan was alert early on to thwart an early Midleton goal chance. Slowly Carrig got to grips with the threat and Colm O'Connell and Pat O'Sullivan stormed into the contest. Liam O'Sullivan and Daniel O'Mahony got control of midfield - and Niall Mac Carthy showed his class with four exquisite first half points. Tomas Hogan hit a long range free and Daniel O'Mahony also chipped in and the sides were locked at 0-6 each, when Carrig struck for the games only goal coming up to the end of the half. Tomas Hogan started a move before offloading to Niall Mac, who parted to Mickey Da who billowed the net - GOAL. This was a decisive moment. Carrig now had a lead and a bulwark against the anticipated second half onslaught. Two more points were exchanged before the break and the sides went in with the score line 1-7 to 0-7 points in favour of the blue and gold. Could we hold out? Midleton passed up some early second half chances to close the gap and Carrig tackled tenaciously all over the field and scoring was at a premium. The wind, while clearly favouring the Magpies in the second half, made scoring difficult and both sides had a high wide count. Mickey Da tapped over a free to extend the lead after Niall Mac was cut down in full flight heading for goals. Robbie White got a neat point midway through the half to make the dream seem closer - and Carrigs tremendous defense continued to shackle and frustrate the dangerous Midleton forwards. Carrig were forced to make a change when Daniel O'Mahony was injured - and Colm Cronin was introduced. Midleton finally broke their second half duck - and made changes up front to attempt to unsettle Carrigs defensive grip. It was all hands on deck - Noel Furlong was dominating at centre back, Niall Mac hunted everything and lifted siege after siege with lung busting runs and great distributuion. Liam O'Sullivan and Colm OConnell continued to block, sweep and break out of dense with surging runs and clearances. Midleton got a pointed free to again leave three points between the teams - but Niall Mac restored the relative security of a four point margin with a trademark beauty from the left wing- after Sean Flannery had set him up. Brian Lordan entered the fray in the engine room for Carrig with 5 minutes to go to boost Carrig and the fight continued. Carrig's loyal supporters became more and more vocal as the clock ticked down. Willie Mac deflected a close range free to safety - before Seamus Farrell had Midleton's final score in injury time. Noel Furlong still had a few brave interventions to perform before the referee, Damien Kirwin, blew up and signaled a joyous pitch invasion for Carrigs supporters. Few among the blue and gold hordes believed they would see this day - Carrig in a county senior hurling final.!!! A moment to treasure. Carrig will need to come back to earth shortly - as their final opponents are themselves a surprise package, CIT, who blew away favorites Newtonshandrum in the other semi final. That's for another day (Sunday Oct 2nd) Carrig are entitled to interim celebrations as reaching a final itself is an epic achievement - and made all the more satisfying by overcoming neighbours and rivals Cloyne and Midleton in the penultimate stages. ON SUNDAY WEEK, OCTOBER 2ND AT PAIRC UI CHAOIMH Lismore Native James O'Connor Has The Magic Touch In Carrig' Whilst Ger Cunningham, Justin and Gerald McCarthy have all travelled east along the N25 to guide the fortunes of respective Waterford teams, there is no doubt that a move in the opposite direction by a Waterford men has met with widespread approval in Carrigtwohill.. Only last week Tallow's Sean Daly stood on the line in Carrigtwohill calling the shots as Dungourney won their third ever East Cork Junior title. It was the same line and the same pitch on which Carrigtwohill's favourite Waterford man James O'Connor has guided the fortunes of his team over the past two seasons. His impact in East Cork has been immense, players and club officers speak of the knowledge, wisdom and expertise which James has brought to the table - here is quick dossier on James O'Connor, for those who wish to learn more. Best of Luck to all the team From McCarthy Plant & Agri Sales Ltd., Ballyrichard, Carrigtwohill (021) Carrigtwohill Mentors, Sean Barrett, James O'Connor (coach and trainer), Tom O'Brien and Maurice O'Donoghue who have guide Carrigtwohill to this years County Senior Hurling Final James is a Lismore native, who first came to playing prominence when captaining the 1994 Waterford Under 21 team to provincial glory from his full back berth. Three summers on he made his senior championship bow against Limerick and his association extended to that ground breaking 2002 Munster Championship Final win against Tipperary at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. On the line, James began his career at home with the Lismore juniors and promptly led them to a county title. Inter county duty soon followed and during his stint James helped Waterford to reach the Munster Under 21 Final following a 14 year absence. Prior to his post in Carrigtwohill, James spent a two year stint in charge of intermediate club Clonea, whom he led to a county final in Despite his ambition to go back playing, injury set in with a hip operation meaning that all his focus has since been very much on Carrigtwohill Looking ahead to his first county final on Cork soil, the Deise man says "With every match we have played in this year's championship, the character of the team has been shown more and more. The lads have magnificent so far this season I definitely think they can take the next step. All our matches have been very close with only a couple of points between the sides at the end,. It's a great sign of the lads to come through these very tight encounters. But we know the quality and the task that is ahead of us know as C.I.T are a seriously good side. 35 DUNGOURNEY GAA NEWS East Cork Final Replay JAMESEY IS HOME. What a difference a few days make, after the drawn game in Midleton we all went home maybe a little bit dissapointed but very much relieved. Wednesday night though was something else alltogether as we returned triumphant to Dungourney with the Jamesey Kelleher cup and the party continued Into the early hours of the morning. But anyway first the match and what a match Dungourney lined out with the same team that started in Midleton and they responded well with points from Kevin and Kenneth Kelleher after Carrig na bhfear had pointed in the third minute. Back came Carrig with four unanswered points from the sixth to the tenth minute. Two points from Shane Casey one from a free closed the gap after seventeen minutes before disaster struck- a loose ball in the Dungourney penalty area fell to a carrig forward who struck it to the net and when Carrig added another point on ninteen minutes we were looking slightly worried. Kevin Rohan replaced John O Neill at this time and six unanswered points from Shane Hegarty, Kevin Rohan, Keneth and three from Casey put us right back in the mix on twenty seven minutes. Carrig got two further points before half time either side of a Shane Casey special to leave the score of a pulsating half, Dungourney 0.11 Carrig na bhfear The second half had barely started when the Carrig goalie was booked for a challenge on Kevin Rohan then the Carrig side raced into a three point lead after four minutes and we were up against it all over again. Three points from Hago, Casey and James McCarthy got us back in the game however, with only one in reply from Carrig na bhfear before James Mc rattled the net with a great strike unfortunatly the ref called back the play for an infringement and we had to settle for a Casey pointed free. Brian Rodgers replaced Kenneth with ten minutes to go and a minute later Shane Casey put over another point. It was getting a bit frantic now with both sides trying to get vital scores and when James Mc Carthy burst through to goal again all of Dungourney jumped for joy, incredibley the ref called back play for another "foul" and again we had to settle for a point from a Casey free. With five minutes remaining Shane Hegarty equalised with a great point from the wing but Carrig responded with two points of their own. Not to be outdone though the industrious Brian Rogers put over a mighty point from the middle of the field and Shane Casey added what proved to be the winner from a free on thirty one minutes. The referee played another minute of injury time before he called time on a truly fine match- we were East Cork champions! What followed were scenes of jubilation as Dungourney people of all ages spilled onto the pitch literally jumping for joy, its hard to put into words what it meant to people but when you see all the smiling faces you know that all the hard work that this team the manager, coach and selectors have put in this year has been well worth it. Then the time came for the presentation of the cup and East Cork Board chairman Michael O Brien presented the cup to Dungourney captain and man of the match Shane Casey to be greeted by a mighty roar from the assembled throng. Speeches were made and pictures were taken before the Carrigtwohill officials started to turn out the lights, just as well or we could have been there all night! A mighty crowd assembled back in Dungourney for the team who were given a heroes welcome on their return and again when they and their mentors and extended panel were introduced to the crowd in the hall. Many thanks must be given to all those who provided cakes and sandwiches and helped out in the hall for the return of the team. A great night was had before we all retired to the pub for a well earned drink and to analysie the match of course -again. JUNIOR C FIRST ROUND The Junior C team took to the pitch for the first round of the championship against Midleton on Friday night in Lisgoold. The lads got off to a great start with Timmy scoring a goal inthe first minute and it was a very even first half with the lads giving as good as they got and going in at half time leading by 1.04 to Dungourney started the second half with a good Liam Ahern point but Midleton had the wind and slowly but surely they got a foothold in the game.scores were hard to comeby with both sides guilty of wides but Midleton were scoring more -three points without reply.then with five minutes to go Midleton goaled after a major goalmouth scramble and then added another point with just two points from Aiden Rigney and Willie O' Neill in reply for Dungourney.Midleton added another point near the end to record a narrow victory 1.08 to 1.07 heartbreak for our lads who gave it everything. LOTTO September 12th jackpot 1800 no winne,r Lucky dip winners Donie Horgan 35,Pat and Rachel Steele 25, Orla Kelleher 15 Next weeks jackpot MIDLETON FOOTBALL CLUB Midleton 'A' Hold Firm to Win Against Corkbeg This local derby proved to be an excellent game and after a loss in their first match the Midleton 'A' lads had something to prove and they did it in style. With a perfect pitch to play on Midleton 'A' started the game brightly and a five man midfield, with Kevin Mulcahy and Barry Kenneally working hard to give possession to Conor Meade who used the ball effectively getting both Cian Walsh and David Jalil on both wings into the game early. The Midleton 'A' defence where holding a tight formation at the back forcing Corkbeg out wide and the back four of Dylan Wright; Patrick Horgan, Cillian Brouder and Eolann Shanahan made easy work of the Corkbeg attack. After 10 minutes the Midleton 'A' pressure set Cian Walsh free on the right and he played an excellent pass to Barry Kenneally who after a good piece of work on the edge of the box played a low cross that was met with perfect timing by Cameron Smyth who was playing as a lone striker and he slotted it home passed the advancing keeper. It was a well deserved lead. This gave the Midleton 'A' lads a lot of confidence and they dominated the Midfield. On the 15 minute mark a series of 1-2s between Meade, Kenneally and Walsh opened up the defence and a neat pass by Walsh to Smyth put him through and after holding off a strong challenge from the defender, he found the corner of the net with a great finish. At this point Corkbeg lifted their game and started to explore the wings as the centre halves for Midleton 'A' were unbeatable. This paid off after 19min with a strong run down the right finished with a low shot that was parried by Conor White in the Midleton 'A' goal only to fall to a Corkbeg player who had a simple finish from 6 yards to make it 1-2. The next 10mins showed a more even contest and it took another great run from Smyth who had pulled out to the right to pick up the ball and then took on the right full back and used his strength and speed to break through the defence. He slipped a pass through to Kenneally who blasted into the roof of the net from 10 yards. With two goals to his name and an assist, Smyth was having a great game and Corkbeg were struggling to deal with his pace and strength. After the half-time break it was Corkbeg who showed the greater intensity and Midleton 'A' were forced to defend deep and in numbers to withstand the attacks. Eventually after 50 minutes Corkbeg did get the break through. With the Midleton 'A' defence standing firm, Corkbeg had to shoot from distance and it was one of these shots from just outside the right edge of the 18 yard box that looped over White and the game was now 2-3 to Midleton with 20 minutes to go. At this point the legs were getting tired on the Midleton 'A' team and both Owen Cashman and Dylan Hallinan came on into the midfield to give some cover for the defence. This proved to be effective and with continued good work from Kenneally and Mulcahy, the midfield started to fight again for possession and take the pressure of the defence. The rest of the game pulsated from end to end without and clear chances and Midleton 'A' held on for a well deserved victory. Report by Colm Smyth. Midleton 'A' Goal Scorers: Cameron Smyth (2) Barry Kenneally AGHADA LADIES FOOTBALL Well done to Emma Farmer who was a member of the Cork development panel that won the Aisling McGing cup for the 4th time after defeating Dublin last Saturday. 36 CARRIG UTD FC Carrigtwohill Utd. Premier A Blackstone 1-3 Carrigtwohill Scorers Jordan O'Leary, Leonard Healy (2) A great performance from the lads yesterday, Carrig took the lead through Jordan O'Leary when Blackstone lost possession in their own half and a quick ball played to Jordan left him one on one where he finished superbly. Leonard Healy playing at left back put us two up when he went on a solo run from halfway beating 3 players before unleashing his powerful shot which the keeper failed to keep out. The second half began better for Blackstone and they could have scored in that spell. But Carrig got back on top and added a third straight from a corner from Leonard Healy. Blackstone scored at the end of the game after sloppy defending from a corner. But overall it was a deserved win for Carrig with a great team performance Ballyseedy Man Of The Match: Leonard "Ducky" Healy Carrigtwohill Utd. B 4 v Cork Road Celtic 5 Carrigtwohill united B had there first defeat in the league this season in a thrilling 9 goal game in fermoy Saturday afternoon. Carrig were missing some key players again but still had a strong team out but it was the home team that applied the early pressure and scored first after the 20 minute mark, a wild shot by the cork road forward got a major deflection off the Carrig defender and went in high over the keeper Stephen Aherne. The home team increased there lead 5 minutes later with some good work down the left hand side and it was 2 nil to the home team. It took the second goal to get Carrig started and then they really came into the game putting the home team on a lot of pressure especially from set pieces and they pulled a goal back soon after. Stephen cotter won the ball in the box and before being brought down, he flicked the ball but it hit off the post and dropped to the feet of Brendan Cronin and he tapped the ball into the net but the referee blew the whistle and brought it back for the foul and awarded the penalty. Darren Sylvester took it and had the original shot shaved but scored from the rebound. Carrig came out the second half all guns blazing and the home team also upped it but it Carrig who scored next to level things, Sub Brian Barry played a lovely ball to Steve cotter who beat his man and drove the ball into the bottom right corner, a great goal to level it by the "Ballyseedy man of the match". Carrig continued to pressure and went ahead soon after through right back Kevin Codey. Steve O Brien laid the ball off and Codey hit the ball well from 40 yard out but the keeper couldn't handle it and it went into the back of the net to put the away team ahead. Carrig didn't hold onto the lead for long and cork road equalised soon after through a free kick outside the box, the ball was driven low and went through everyone, a rather fortunate goal to level things, Carrig then went 4-3 up from a corner swung in by James Broderick and was headed in by Colin Ahern. Carrig were now winning with 5 mins left but there was still time for more drama and the home side again equalised in controversial style, a shot was saved by the Carrig keeper Aherne but he was then blatantly bundled over by cork roads forward and they tapped in to an empty goal. Cork Road Celtic then took the lead in injury time, again Ahern made a great save but could do nothing bout the rebound and the home team won the match 5-4 although Carrig deserved something out of the game for a fabulous performance. U14 League League v Macroom in Macroom on Sat 17th Sept - Macroom 6 Carrigtwohill United 4 We travelled to Macroom expecting our usual tough close battle with Macroom, and that's what we got. Due to some delays, we arrived late and had to rush onto the pitch to get the game going. This had a very bad effect and we started very slow. Macroom stormed into a 3 goal lead as we tried to get into the game. Stand in keeper Tom O'Brien, played well but could do nothing to stop the 3 goals as all the team struggled to pick up the pace of the Macroom play. We created one great chance late in the half. Liam Gosnell beat his man on the right wing and crossed into the box. The keeper missed it, but unfortunately the onrushing Gary O'Brien narrowly missed it too. Carrig made changes at halftime, Philip Dorgan for Morgan Doody and Brendan Twomey for Gary O'Brien. Right from the start Carrig began to play some good football and were rewarded with a few minutes. Conor Keegan sent over a corner from the left and Liam Gosnell arrived unmarked at the back post to side foot volley it throw the keeper's legs. Carrig kept up the pressure but were caught on the break by the fast Macroom forwards, who made it 4-1. As the heavy rain fell Carrig drove on and soon scored again. Conor Keegan scoring direct from a free kick from the right corner of the penalty box. Within minutes Philip Dorgan pounced on a loose ball in the 6 yard box and poked in from close range to make it 4-3. Macroom were under pressure and only had a few chances, but due to our weekend defence and their clinical finishing they scored a 5th. Carrig came again and a great turn and shot by Cormac Horgan from 20 yards, beat the keeper low into the left corner of the net to make it 5-4 with minutes remaining. Unfortunately Carrig just couldn't get the equaliser and Macroom broke away again to score their 6th. A great 2nd half fight back that fell short. Ballyseedy Man of the Match - Tom O'Brien. 37 Killeagh-Ita's Juvenile GAA Buachaillí óga storm Páírc Uí Chaoimh! Our Fé 9 and Fé 10 players participated in the Féile Spraoi Iomáint hurling blitzes organised by Coiste na nog, under the direction of Games Development Administrator Paudie O'Brien in Páirc Uí Chaoimh this past week. Our 2002 boys played on Monday evening against Carrigtwohill, Glen Rovers and Whites Cross, while our 2001boys also played a Carrigtwohill team, along with Carrignavar and Watergrasshill. Over the course of three evenings, over 50 teams, comprising somewhere around 800 boys, got to play on the hallowed turf, which was a fair logistical achievement for the organisers. Míle buíochas do Paudie agus a fhoireann for the great work put in to ensure it was a success. County Minor Football Championship Sunday morning last saw Cilliath Íde agus An Cóbh descend onto the pitch of Castlemartyr to contest the semi-final stage of this year's Minor Football championship, under the watchful eye of an reiteoir, Briaín Breathnach. Both teams looked evenly matched in the opening five minutes, defending well and holding the opposition scoreless. Cobh then took flight as they registered their first point and followed with five more in the next twelve minutes. Killeagh-Ita's got off the mark mid-way through this half with a Matthew Murphy point and continued to dominate with a further three points from the boots of Colin, Dinny and Ian. Cobh went one further ahead before Colin reached high to an incoming ball and punched it to the Cobh net, to level matters on the twenty fifth minute. The closing minutes belonged to Cobh as they added two to their tally to leave the half time score: Cobh 0-9 to Killeagh-Ita's 1-4. To our disadvantage, the second-half saw the wind dying down, when it should have been at our backs and to our aid. Cobh again took this game by the scruff of the neck in the opening fifteen minutes and secured a further seven points without reply. Dave Cahill got us back on the board, but we had a mountain to climb and Cobh were not giving up so easily. They soon cancelled out Dave's efforts. We managed to exchange two more to their one in the closing ten minutes but alas as the final whistle sounded we had to bow out gracefully on an 0-18 to 1-7 scoreline. We wish Cobh all the best as they face Glanmire or Donoughmore in the final, in the coming weeks. Well done lads and a big bualadh bos to your manager, coaches and selectors. Fixtures: Thurs. We are now out of the Championship for this year. Despite this set back we are satisfied with getting to a quarter final in our first year back up to Senior grade. We are still in the Summer Cup -we meet Newcestown in the semi-final in early October. U18's: A week on from our senior defeat and we are back on winning form. Our Minors took on St Catherine's in the County semi-final last Saturday in Dungourney. All thanks to referee Jimmy O'Mahony we missed the heavy rain that fell. After a foul on Jessica Tracey, Kate Murphy opened our scoring with a point. St Catherine's replied with 2 points, before Shauna Landers passed a lovely ball to Roisin Culligan who duly delivered it over the bar. Kate had our third point and then St Catherine's dominated the rest of the first half with 3 successive points. The half time score read Killeagh 3 points to St Catherine's 6 points. St Catherine's came out fighting in the second half and had scored another point and a goal before the half time "chat" from the mentors galvanised the Killeagh girls into action. Kate started the rally back with a score from the 45 mark. Laura's hard work in the backline passed a lovely ball to an on form Shauna Landers who sent it straight over the bar. Ellen Benaim, Nora Walsh and Shauna Harnedy gave great cover to our goalie Jessica Swayne repeatedly driving the ball back up the field. Kate scored our 6th point and much to the delight of everyone concerned landed the next ball into the back of the net. Niamh and Becky had the half back line well covered, with Jess and Aoife keeping the ball up to the forwards. As tension mounted Kate had 2 more points and Shauna scored the last point of the match. As the whistle blew we had won by 2 points. We go on to contest the U18 County Final - either against Mallow or Glen Rovers- date and venue not yet decided. U16's: The U16 Championship starts this week with our first match against Carrigaline.Congratulations to all our girls who got such good results in their Junior Cert exams this week. Good luck to all our girls on the Cork Senior Football panel for the All Ireland next Sunday. Best wishes go to Noel O Connor who manages this great bunch of girls. CORKBEG FC ''AUL Div2A - Leeview 2 Corkbeg 3 Corkbeg beat Leeview 3-2 in Pfizer Park on a windy Sunday morning in Ringaskiddy. It was a very even game early on with few opportunities at either end. In fact, Corkbeg scored with their 1st real attack after 20 minutes. Darrian O Donoghue beat the offside trap from a great through ball by Ian Casey and superbly lobbed the advancing goalkeeper for the opener. The Beg almost went 2 goals up on the half hour, when Josh Tawadrous had a 20 yard strike well saved. But 5 minutes later, Leeview equalised when the striker drove a low shot to the net, beating Paul O Reilly at his near post. Leeview had the upper hand coming up to half time and missed two good opportunities to go ahead before half time. Leeview had the aid of a really strong breeze in the 2nd half, but to their credit, they never resorted to long balls at any stage of the game. Corkbeg went ahead again after 55 minutes when Aidan Cotter played a great through ball into Josh Tawadrous and he finished well to the bottom corner. Leeview continued to press, but it was Corkbeg who created all the openings. In the space of 10 minutes, Darrian O Donoghue and Fred Wenham both had shots well saved and Josh Tawadrous, playing his final game for Corkbeg, drove wide after being sent clear through on goal. Corkbeg were awarded a penalty with 25 minutes remaining, when Tawadrous was taken down by the Leeview goalkeeper. Darrian O Donoghue scored the resulting penalty after the keeper was harshly red carded. Tawadrous recieved his own marching orders a few minutes later for a 2nd booking. Leeview got back into the game with 12 minutes remaining, when a huge goalmouth scramble resulted in a goal-line clearance cannoning in off O' Reillys back into the net, after a corner had been mysteriously awarded to Leeview. Corkbeg, however, were comfortable in the remaining minutes with great performances from Dean Keegan, Aidan Cotter, Sean Quirke & Kerrie O Mahoney to keep Leeview at bay. Great to see every player put in a good shift in what was a difficult day to play football.team: P. O Reilly, C. Kelly, D. O Driscoll, S. Quirke, D. Keegan, K. O Mahoney, A. Cotter, F. Wenham, I. The Beg left themselves with a big mountain to climb last Saturday morning, missing 4 players & they conceded 3 soft 1st half goals. Good performances by Jordan Tynan, Gavin Kelly & Conor Maloney in a good 2nd half display, but Midletons defence held strong. Jordan Tynan & Jamie Gilroy got Corkbegs goals.''

38 MIDLETON ATHLETIC CLUB SENIOR SECTION Having taken silver in the National Half Marathon O-55 category it was somewhat inevitable that a gold in the Cork event in Blarney on the 4th September would follow for arguably, pound for pound, our best 13.1 miler, Neilus Aherne. Neilus hardly broke a sweat in finishing in 1:25:32 to the delight of all his fellow team members. Neilus is surely on course to cap a magnificent season with an improvement on his 2: Dublin Marathon. No pressure there, Neilus! It was indeed a great day in Blarney for Midleton AC with numerous pbs recorded. Brian McGuire and Owen O'Connell finished strongly in 1:33 and 1:25 respectively. Breda Cahill 1:36, Claire Fitzgerald, 1:41:and Deirdre Aherne, 1:43 continued their marathon preparations with fine runs. We had twenty five runners taking part including both Mark Walsh and John Carey with respective 1: 37 and 1:41 pbs. Also running well on this demandingly hilly course were Barry Aherne, Paul Kierans, Simon Thompson, Vincent O'Neill, Danny McCarthy, Vincent Connolly, Marie Murphy, Helen Gilroy, Margaret Rohan. Mary O'Mahony and Sinead Buckley. Seasoned marathoners Denis Kelleher and Mary Toher also enjoyed their runs in Blarney in the good company of Marion Carroll and Rosari Griffin. Yesterday in Charleville our half-marathoners continued their autumn tour at the final event in the Ballyhoura series. Kevin Smith broke the magic 80 minute mark to finish 13th overall in a hugely impressive 1:19:06. That headline-grabbing, master half-marathoner, Neilus Aherne completed a fine three in a row in as many weeks to finish as a category winner in 1:26. Adam Duchnicz in 1:28 and Seán O'Sullivan in 1:30 made sure that we had top performances at the business end of things. Denis Kelleher preferred the company here too and his very impressive 1:32 ensured another Midleton AC vest hit the finish line amongst the frontrunners. Anna Doris and John Carey knocked four minutes off their Blarney times with positive performances too from Marie Murphy, Trish Murphy, Chris Murphy, Margaret Rohan, Elaine Hennessy, Colette Barry, Sinéad Ivers, Claire O'Leary, Danny McCarthy and Francis Maunsell. Meanwhile at the Kilkenny Half-Marathon, Margaret Jones was the only Midleton AC entrant. Her impressive 1:50 augers well for her sub 4 hour aspirations in Dublin next month. On Saturday last Olympian, Caitriona McKernan was our guest as she gave an outstanding Chi-running workshop to thirteen club members. The former London marathon champion passed on invaluable words of advice on technique and running posture. This is the second time Caitriona has visited our club to work with members and we hope to have her back to host another workshop in the coming season. Many thanks to Sally Drennan for organising the workshop. Well done to Maggie Chojan on winning the East Cork Cross Country Championship and to John Carey on winning a category prize at the North Mon 5k. Full results were not available before this publication deadline but both events will be covered in the next column. Next up on the calendar is the Cork to Cobh 15 mile road race on Sunday 2nd October. This BHAA event has a 9.30am start. Other dates to look out for:thursday 22nd September at 8pm. CASTLEMARTYR GAA NEWS East Cork Junior A Football Championship Castlemartyr 0-08 Carraig na bhfear 1-15 We were back in football championship action last Saturday night against Carrignavar in Carrigtwohill, It was 5 months since our previous Championship match, win over bride rovers. Carrignavar were faster out of the blocks and within 5 minutes were leading 1.02 to no score. We were playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, and opened our account after 9 mins with a pointed free from Maurice Hodnett, this was quickly followed by a Jimmy Smiddy pointed free after some good work by James Barry. Donnacha O Tuama got out third point on the trot with a fine individual effort, this was followed by a sublime score from Maurice Hodnett who quickly followed up with another point after 25 minutes. Carrignavar added 2 more points before the short whistle to leave us trailing at the break 1.05 to We started the second half well with a great score from Evan O Keeffe. Then the Carrig boys seemed to find their rhythm and kicked some fine scores, it could have been worse for us but for some fine goalkeeping from veteran keeper Michael John Cremin, aided by some stout defending by Adrian Bowens Rob and John ODonavan. Junior C Hurling Championship Castlemartyr 1-16 Lisgoold 1-03 Castlemartyr started their defence of the East Cork Junior C championship with a comprehensive win over Lisgoold in Rostellan last Tuesday evening. Playing with the assistance of a strong wind in the opening half, Castlemartyr dominated procession and built us a healthy lead. Chris Moran was on fire, scoring 3 points from play. He was ably assisted by Kevin O'Leary who was deadly accurate from placed balls. James Barry also got the score of the half from out on the sideline. At the short whistle, Castlemartyr led by Facing into a stiff wind in the second half, Castlemartyr stated off like they finished the first half and soon had extended their lead to take the pressure off. Kevin O'Leary continued slotting over frees and James Deehan began to get on the ball more. Steve Collins got a great point after running half the length of the field, and then Jason Barrett finished to the net from close range to end the game as a contest. Lisgoold rallied with a couple of points and found the net in the dying minutes after a high ball into the Castlemartyr square deceived the Castlemartyr defence. Best for Castlemartyr on the night were Chris Moran who finished with 4 points from play as well as Kevin O'Leary who finished with 7 points. We now go on to play Midleton in the semi-final. 40 MIDLETON INDOOR BOWLS 48 Teams In League The draw was made at the weekend for the Inter Club Leagues sponsored by O'Brien's Garage, Midleton Mazda and Suzuki Dealers and our club is very proud to enter 3 teams for the coming season. Our record in the league over the past 3 seasons has been outstanding in reaching the final each year and retaining the trophy last year after winning the trophy for the first time in the season. The teams in Midletons section are all from very strong clubs and we are facing a very tough campaign. Section 4: Midleton, Watergrasshill, Mahon, St. Lukes, St. Marys and Carrigaline GAA Section 7: Midleton, Rockies, Sacred Heart, Ballincollig Community, Coxs Hall and Blackpool Section 8: Midleton, Ballincollig GAA, Highfield, Carrigaline Community, Mitchelstown and Ballinlough Our members returned to the GAA at the beginning of September and are putting in a huge effort in practicing every Tuesday and Thursdaynight with between 20 and 30 participants a night. Best of luck to everyone for the new season. League winners 2010 BAILE NA CORRA GAA CLUB East Cork Junior B Hurling Ballinacurra 3-11 Watergrasshill 3-9 A game of two halves is often an overused cliché in the GAA, but this was certainly the case in Castlelyons last Wednesday evening. Despite being ten points down with just over twenty minutes left Ballinacurra produced a storming second half display to pip Watergrasshill at the death. Watergrasshill got off to the perfect start when they had a goal and a point on the board after just three minutes. The Village replied in the ninth minute when Scott Richards knocked over a free after Damien Daly was fouled. Two minutes later Watergrasshill pointed a free of their own to leave four points between the sides. In the 20th minute Watergrasshill were successful from a 70 and a minute later got their second goal to leave The Village eight points down with a mountain to climb. Damien Daly got Ballinacurra's second point of the game before a goal and a point from The Hill left them eleven points clear with half time fast approaching. An opportunist goal late in the first half from Scott Richards gave Ballinacurra a glimmer of hope for the second half going in eight points down. Ballinacurra found themselves ten points adrift after Watergrasshill tagged on two points early in the second half and seemingly now with a mountain to climb. Denny McCarthy narrowed the gap with a fine effort from the right hand side after 38 minutes. Five minutes later Scott Richards again got on the score sheet after grabbing a sideline ball and turning sharply to split the posts. Two minutes later Scott again pointed after a ball from Trevor Richards. Watergrasshill pointed a free in the 48th minute before a Damien Daly solo run resulted in another point for The Village. It only took a minute for Watergrasshill to cancel out that score with a point of their own. A monstrous point from Damien Daly kept the scoreboard ticking over for Ballinacurra. The deficit was cut to just seven points when Ian Cahill ran onto a breaking ball to coolly slot the ball over. A Scott Richards brace of points left five between the sides with only five minutes remaining. Denny McCarthy popped up with a goal in the 56th minute to leave just two between the sides. Scott Richards left the minimum between the sides with two minutes left on the clock. Ballinacurra were now throwing the kitchen sink at Watergrasshill going in search of that elusive equaliser. It seemed The Hill were going to hold out when a defensive clearance saw Ballinacurra win a sideline ball deep in their own half with only a minute of injury time remaining. A quick lineball from Mossy Stack found replacement goalkeeper Mark O Sullivan who cleared long to find Damien Daly. Another long ball from Daly seemed to take an age to come down. But come down it did and into the grateful hand of Killian Harty. Despite being surrounded by Watergrasshill backs Killian found the room to swing a boot and crash the ball to the back of the net to leave Ballinacurra two points up and cap an amazing comeback. Watergrasshill only had time to puck the ball out before the referee blew for full time to leave The Village victorious. RUSSELL ROVERS GAA Russell Rovers 1-15 Killeagh 0-9 Our Junior hurling second string made their inaugural appearance in the Junior C championship when they had a well-merited win over Killeagh at the Paddy Walsh Memorial Park, Castlemartyr last Tuesday evening week. Having lost the toss, we had to play into the teeth of a strong wind in the opening half. Veteran Donie Fitzgerald opened our account with a point from a difficult angle in the 5th minute and added another seven minutes later with Kevin O'Brien pointing a free in between. Killeagh raced into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead by the end of the first quarter but three points from Kevin O'Brien in the last five minutes of the half left the sides deadlocked at 6 points apiece at the short whistle. Turning to play with wind advantage, Rovers began to take control of the game early in the second period. In the 8th minute a speculative shot by James Moynihan deceived the Killeagh custodian in the tricky evening sun and the ball just dropped over the goal line. This goal put us on the road to victory and further points by Kevin O'Brien (0-4), Joseph O'Flynn (0-2), Martin O'Flynn (0-1), Alan Cott (0-1) and Pa Daly (0-1) ensured our safe passage into the semi-final of this competition. Our defence provided the platform for this win with Anthony Archer and Paudie Higgins playing major roles in the pivotal positions while cornerback Kieran O'Brien had a great first half. Kevin Ivers, Paul Lane and Tom O'Brien also put in an excellent hour's work and never put a foot wrong. At midfield Kevin O'Brien was our top scorer, bagging 8 points in all from play and frees, with Martin O'Flynn also contributing handsomely in general play, as did brother Joseph when introduced as a second-half substitute to score two superb points from out on the wing. We now meet Bride Rovers in the semi-final which may be fixed for next weekend. Team: Andrew Hartnett; Kieran O'Brien, Anthony Archer, Kevin Ivers; Tom O'Brien Padraig Higgins (Capt), Paul Lane; Kevin O'Brien, Martin O'Flynn; Aidan Beausang, Pa Daly, Jonathan Walsh; James Moynihan, Donal Fitzgerald, James Walsh. Subs: Chris Scanlon, Joseph O'Flynn, Alan Cott, Antoin Walsh, John Burke, Shane Casey. Russell Rovers 3-5 Aghada 0-5 We collected another brace of points in Division 3 of the JHL in Rostellan last Sunday morning. Playing with the aid of a very strong wind in the opening half, the twin strike force of James Walsh (2-0) and Alan Cott (1-2) secured the win with further points from Paudie Higgins, James Moynihan and Joseph O'Flynn, giving us a comfortable half-time lead of 3-5 to 0-0. Like Aghada, we failed to score against the wind in the second half. Team: Andrew Hartnett; Kieran O'Brien, Kevin Ivers, James Ahern; Ricky Walsh, Anthony Archer, Paul Lane; Martin O'Flynn, David Whelehan; Joseph O'Flynn, Padraig Higgins, Eoin McGrath; Aidan Beausang, Alan Cott, James Walsh. O NEILL S IN FINAL OF INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP Fr O'Neills booked their place in the final of the Intermediate camogie championship last Saturday evening in Castle Road in what was a hard fought 2-05 to 0-03 win over Aghabullogue. The match started at a frantic pace as both sides looked to get the edge in the opening exchanges. The sides remained in deadlock for the opening ten minutes until Fiona O'Driscoll stepped up to point a free in what were very difficult scoring conditions. This seemed to drive O'Neills on and after another pointed free by O'Driscoll, Captain Liz Sweetnam made her presence felt in the Aghabullogue full back line with two well taken goals in quick succession. After this Aghabullogue hit their own purple patch and laid seige on the O'Neills defence. The backs kept their nerve however and cleared their lines well with Gearoidin Kearney, in particular, having a stormer at centre back. Aghabullogue registered their first score with a free on the 24th minute but this was quickly cancelled out by an excellent point from play by Nora Aherne. The referee brought the first half to a close with O'Neills leading by 2-03 to 0-1. O'Neills knew that Aghabullogue would put up a much tougher battle in the second half and that is exactly how it transpired. While O'Driscoll notched up the first point of the second half for O'Neills with another well taken point from a free, Aghabullogue stepped up the pressure and had the better of the exchanges over the following minutes. An Aghabullogue point from a free was followed up by an extremely close missed goal chance after a deflection from a 45 to leave the scores at 2-04 to Aghabullogue continued to drive at the O'Neills defence but the backs responded well and firmly held their ground. Kearney pointed a long range free to extend O'Neills lead to 2-05 to 0-02 and while Aghabullogue registered the final score of the match, it matter little as O'Neills held out to win the match on a scoreline of 2-05 to O'Neills will now play Tracton, who over came Carrigaline by three points in the first match of the day. This will be a repeat of the league final and is sure to be a cracker! Team: T.Cusack, C.Mc Grath, Y.Murphy, C.O'Shea, F.Wiggins, G.Kearney (0-1f), S.Harrington, D O'Leary, K.Harrington, C.Phlean, N.Aherne (0-1), L.Sweetnam (2-0), K.Ahern, M.Finn, F O'Driscoll (0-3f). Congratulations must go to Sarah Harrington who had just come off the pitch in Nenagh to play in this match after winning the final Aisling Mc Ging tournament with the Cork Ladies Senior B's against Dublin. The final is due to be played in Castle Road Saturday 4.00pm. We held the last U8 and U10 go-game blitz last Friday evening with teams from Killeagh, Dungourney, Youghal and Carrigtwohill. Great fun was had and we look forward to seeing everyone next season. Our minor team had a fantastic day in Celbridge last weekend as part of a Joan O'Flynn invitational tournament being run by Celbridge camogie club. Teams came from Dublin, Meath and Kildare. We were unlucky to lose by just a point in the semi-final. Also on the road last weekend was our U14 team who played, as part of a Croke Park twinning initiative, a successful match vs St. Finbarr's of Cabra. They were joined by our minor team in Cabra and they all attended the camogie All-Ireland in Croke Park. It was a great weekend and the girls did their families and club proud. Our U15 team met Dungourney in the East Cork league semi-final last Saturday morning and ran out winners with final score Fr O'Neill's 4-4 Dungourney 1-4. No time or venue has been set for final as there are still matches to be played on the other side. "Save date - November 11th" more details in weeks to come! Aghada Ladies Football Well done to Emma Farmer who was a member of the Cork development panel that won the Aisling McGing cup for the 4th time after defeating Dublin last Saturday. Our Juniors will be playing in the All Ireland 7's competition being hosted in Dublin next weekend. This is the girls first year competing in the event. We wish them all the very best and a very enjoyable weekend. Well done also to our U-14 team who are through to the EC Championship final after defeating Midleton by 2-11 to 1-1. Thanks to everyone who supported our table quiz last weekend and also all those who provided prizes for our raffle.

42 Junior C hurling Championship Midleton 1-08 Dungourney 1-07 Midleton Junior C hurlers, our fourth adult hurling team, were in Championship action on Friday evening last. They faced Dungourny in Lisgoold on what was a dull drizzly evening. Dungourney had first use of the hill and had an early goal. With defences on top it soon became apparent that this was going to be a low scoring game and that goals would be very valuable. Midleton welcomed back a number of players who had missed a lot of the year through injury. Eoin Ferriter, Aegus Cotter, James O'Donnall and the evergreen Sean Corcoran, who had a terrible ankle injury earlier in the year, all started. James O'Donnell has to retire early on the night when he picked up a thumb injury. Muiris Quirke replaced him and slotted in well at centre back. It was nip and tuck to half time and the goal still separated the side. Dungourney 1-03 Midleton 0-3. Midleton upped their efforts the second half but Dungourney were dealing well with the added pressure. Eoin Ferriter and Jerome Curtin were doing well in our full back line. Captain Brendan Ferriter was prominent at wing back beside the steady Muiris Quirke. Justin Costigan was striking a lot of ball at midfield. Aengus Cotter was doing well on the forty and Kevin McSweeney and Sean Corcoran were to the fore up front. The selectors emptied the bench as Midleton chased the game. The introduction of Coleman Qurke alongside Sean Corcoran in the full forward line meant there was no lack of experience close to goal. After sustained pressure Midleton eventually got the goal they needed when Sean Corcoran forced the ball over the line with five minutes left. In an exciting last few minutes Midleton held out for a one point win and this sets up a meeting with Castlemartyr in the semi final. Team: Christy Dunlea, Mathew Bell, Eoin Ferriter, Jerome Curtin, Brendan Ferriter (Captain), James O'Donnell, Andrew Rea, Paul Ahern, Justin Costigan, Kevi McSweeney, Aengus Cotter, Sean Corcoran, Shane Goulding, Dara O'Keeefe, Gearoid Fitzgerald, Subs Used: Muiris Quirke, John Shanahan, Coleman Quirke, Brian Fitzgerald, Killian O'Brien. McDaids Bar, Midleton sponsor our Night at the Dogs We held our launch for our Night at the Dogs on Thursday last in McDaids Bar, Midleton. McDaids who are kindly sponsoring the night hosted the launch. There was even a greyhound present. Midleton GAA Night at the Dogs in Curaheen Park Cork takes place on Saturday 1st October; 20 per Family are now available from any Club Officer. Junior B Hurling Championship Midleton Junior B Hurlers are in championship action this Wednesday, 21st, when they face Cobh in Rostellan at 8.15pm. The winners advance to the quarter final and a meeting with Carrignavar. It is all of nine weeks since Midleton won their first round game against Sarsfields. Senior Hurling league Midleton 2-13 St Finbarrs 2-10 Midleton played their thirteenth league game at the weekend and overcame St. Finnbarrs by three points. This leaves on thirteen points with two games to play. We will most likely need to win both to qualify for the plyoffs and a chance to defend our title. We face Ballinhassing at home on Saturady next, 24th, at 4pm with our final game against Blackrock. Fe16 Premier 2 Football League Glanmire v Midleton in the Pike Glanmire This game was played last Monday evening and resulted in a draw after a very exciting finish where we came from 2 goals down to force a draw. Final Score Glanmire: 3.06 v Midleton 2.09 Team: Josh Deady, Luke Morrissey, Billy O Shea, Cillian Deady, Sean O Farrell, Aaron Mc Evoy, Kevin Rohan, Darren Quirke, Patrice Tschmanga, Eanna O Brien, Padraic Nagle, Imbiblio Bello, Robert Williams, Gavin Bagnell and Lochlinn Mc Carthy. Subs, Brian Rossiter & Shane Buckley. Well done to all our players on their results in the Junior Cert last week. Fe 13 Our U-13 Eastern Division Panel travelled to Ballincollig to take on the Western Champions Kilbrittain in the County Semi-Final on Saturday Sept 17th. Playing against a strong wind in the first half the boys did very well until the final 8 mins when a quick goal scoring burst by Kilbrittain meant that we had been left with a mountain to climb in the second half. The boys stuck to their task for the second half and began to pull the score back but the Kilbrittain goal led a charmed life for parts of the half and our lads couldn't find enough scores to overhaul the big deficit. These lads deserve a load of credit for having come through a tough Eastern Division as champions and have shown that there is plenty of potential there if they keep working hard at their game. The Panel on the day was Dylan Cahalane (Capt), Eoin Hartnett, Cormac Higgins, Kelvin Hickey, Conor Evans, Conor O'Neill, John O'Dwyer, Kevin Daly, Sean O'Meara, Ryan O'Reagan, Tom Scanlon, PJ Fitzgearld, Tommy O'Connell, Ronan O'Donovan, Shane O'Brien, Eoin Moloney, Christopher Power, Cathal Gunning, Sean O'Leary and Liam Franklin Our U-13 Central Team are playing Championship on Saturday Sept 24th at home at 12noon against Na Piarsaigh. Fe 10 What a week for the Fe 10 hurlers of Midleton. The finals of the County MIDLETON GAA NOTES Board summer leagues were held in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th of September. Three Midleton teams participated in all; two on Tuesday and one on Wednesday. Games were 11 a side and 8 minutes per half. The park was awash with colour on both nights with twenty teams from all over Cork attending each night. Midleton had 8 games in total over the two nights and were tested well in all. Some opposition teams we had never played before - the likes of St Catherines and Ballygarvan. Others we have clashed already including St Finbarrs, Glen Rovers, Bishiopstown and Fr O'Neills. Midleton were a credit to themselves and were strong in all of their games. They showed great heart and a good deal of hurling skill. The evenings concluded with the walk up the steps to collect their medals. Hopefully this will be the first of many presentations in the Park for the lads. Well done to both players and also the parents who made the trip. Fe 9 On Saturday the 17th our fe9 hurlers headed to Douglas. 22 players travelled and were split into teams. Midleton overall were very strong and really put it up to the home team. Hurling skills from the training pitch are starting to show through in the matches now. Well done to all who played. Keep up the practice. Fe 8 Midleton's Fe8's were in Rostellan on Saturday 17th. This was ideal end of season stuff as the outing consisted of Gaelic Football and Hurling matches. Both Midleton and Aghada had sufficient numbers that allowed the clubs field two teams. So, on what was a breezy morning hurling was first up. The two hurling games served up some fine performances. Midleton only just shaded both hurling games. From what was witnessed on Saturday hurling is in safe hands for the future in both of these clubs. Second on the agenda was the football matches. Again, all participants can be proud of their contributions and it's safe to say that from the evidence of the morning's games there's a lot of work being put into both clubs at this age group. Fe 7 Our Fe 7 team took on Blackrock in small sided ground hurling games in Midleton on Saturday 17th. Early days to judge the lads as it may be they impressed. The basics of holding the hurley and pulling on both sides look to be sorted. It looked like great fun for all the kids on the field which at this age is of great importance. Well done lads and keep up the hard work Juvenile Players Street League Registration/Sale of Gear On Saturday the 24TH September we will hold our annual Player Registration morning in the GAA club from pm, Junior infant boys and all current Juvenile players are asked to attend and register for 2012 and of course we welcome any new boys to the area to join our Club. Also on this morning we will conduct a Sale of old and new playing gear, anyone who has old clean playing gear which is no longer any use can pass them onto the team manager Lotto The Lotto since its introduction to our Club a number of years ago has been our main source of income and is crucial towards the upkeep and development of the club. The Lotto draw takes place approximately 50 weeks of the year on each Friday night at the GAA Club. The Jackpot begins at 1,200(our current Jackpot is 8,700) and increases weekly by 200, in the event of there being no winner we have 5 Lucky 40 each. We believe that many club members would support the Lotto if there was a more convenient way of contributing other than 2 per week. In addition to the 5 week, 11 week and Yearly tickets, we now have a Direct Debit facility available to those who would prefer to support the club in this manner. For as little as 8 a month you will be entered in at least 50 draws, if you would like to support your club please contact any Club officer who will assist you in completing the form. The Irish Sports Council is inviting you to get involved in sport with your children at Cork Institute of Technology on Saturday 24th from 12-3pm. The Irish Sports Council Family Sports Days are being rolled out at five venues across the country by Local Sports Partnerships in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford. The aim of the day is to encourage more families to get involved in playing sport together as a way of keeping fit and healthy. The Council has created the Local Sports Partnership network to provide opportunities for people to participate in sport and physical activity within their own communities at local level. The first Family Sports Day was run in Athlone in February as part of the Irish Sports Council s association with Operation Transformation, the hit RTE show. The huge interest generated by the show in the work of the Local Sports Partnerships has meant that the concept of Family Sports Days is being rolled out further this September. At the events, families will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of new and old family friendly sports and activities. Representatives from local clubs and groups will be on hand during the day to offer advice on getting involved in the activities on offer. Activities will be a mixture of team and individual games and will be both outdoor and indoor. FR. O NEILL S GAA NEWS Cork County Premier II Minor Hurling championship Fr. O' Neill's 2-13, Valley Rovers 1-8 Fr. O' Neill's picked up the Gerald McCarthy Perpetual Cup on Sunday night last when they defeated a fancied Valley Rovers side in the final of the Cork County Premier II hurling championship played at Pairc Ui Rinn. This game was played prior to the Premier I clash between Blackrock and Castlelyons and if the standard of this game is anything to go on then the patrons that came in for the second game were treated to an exhibition of hurling. All players from the goalie to the corner forward did their bit for the O' Neill's cause and even when under pressure at certain stages in both halves never gave up the belief that they could get a result from this game. Scores wer scarce in the opening few minutes of this game and the first score came off the stick of Valley Rovers mid fielder, Darragh Murphy, on the fourth minute. Liam O' Driscoll open O' Neill's account on the seventh minute when he struck a point from a 35m free. Murphy restored the Valley's lead on the 13th minute from a long range free and added another a minute from play. Jason Crowley extended the Rovers lead with a fine point playing with a strong wind while Liam O' Driscoll responded with two points from frees to keep O' Neill's in the game. Crowley added another point from a free and on the 23rd minute Donough O' Flynn broke through the Carrigdhoun men's defence and raised a white flag to let a point between the sides. Darragh Sexton leveled the game a minute later and on the 27th minute young David O' Driscoll put O' Neill's in the lead for the first time when he pointed. However on the stroke of half time Jason Crowley brought the game back on level terms with a pointed free. This was a good position for O' Neill's to be in as having played against a strong wind went in on level terms with Valley Rovers at the short whistle. Valley made hard work of their scores while O' Neill's seemed to get LISGOOLD/LEAMLARA LADIES FOOTBALL MIDLETON SNIPPETS Calling all Gardeners - Volunteers required for Midleton Community Hospital to create a new flower garden on Saturday 1st October 10am to 4pm. They held this lead until Gary Farrell batted the ball into the O' Neill's net after Eoin O' Neill made a good save. This was setback for O' Neill's but also served as a wake up call to them. Rob Cullinane got a point back almost immediately but Valley's marksman Jason Crowley cancelled this one out. Rob Cullinane teamed up with Darragh Sexton on the 42nd minute when Darragh split the posts to let a point between the sides. O' Neill's took the lead again two minutes later when Donough O' Flynn sent in a nice low ball to young David O' Driscoll and David rounded his man with a neat turn and gave Valley's goalie, Conor O' Sullivan no chance in his goal. O' Neill's saw this score as game on and Shane Lee added a point to increase the gap between the sides. Liam added a further point from a free but the icing on the cake came from the stick of Shane Lee when his shot rocked the Valley Rovers net to put real daylight between the sides. In fairness the Rovers never gave up and made several attempts in the closing minutes to reduce the score. On one of these occasions, Eoin O' Neill brought off a great save, while his defence held steadfast and as time ran out it was O' Neill's night with an emphatic win. Scores: Fr. O' Neill's; Liam O' Driscoll 0-6 (0-5 f), Shane Lee, David O' Driscoll 1-1 each, Darragh Sexton 0-3, Rob Cullinane, Donough O' Flynn, Paudie McMahon 0-1 each. U14G Group C championship semi-final v Rockban, 14/9/11 Final Score Lisgoold 4.11 Rockban 4.7 In near perfect conditions in Lisgoold on Wednesday night, the Lisgoold girls faced a strong Rockban team in the first of the semifinals of the East Cork Group C Championship. Lead by their captain Aoife Healy, Lisgoold started at a blistering pace with points from Niamh Power, Dayna Bradley and a goal from Ella O'Brien. Lisgoold had a score of 1.3 before Rockban responded. At the end of the first half Ella, Dayna and Siomha Walsh had increased Lisgoold's tally to 2.6 with a comeback from Rockban to give them 2.5. The second half was a fast, fierce contest which saw the backs putting in a great performance to keep Rockban from racking up a high score. Terrific play from the half backs of Donna McCann, Aoife Roche and Aoibhe Savage and the full backs, Fiona Murphy, Kate Ruane and Aoife Healy kept Lisgoold in the game. Goal Keeper Tara Spriggs made 3 magnificent saves. In the second half the midfielders Caoilinn Hickey and Siomha Walsh racked up scores along with half forwards Niamh Power, Dayna Bradley and Sinead O'Brien with support from Stephanie O'Driscoll, Laura Walsh, Maria Hennessy and Rachel McCann to give Lisgoold a magnificent win over Rockban with the final score 4.11 to 4.7.Trainers Eilis Walsh, Willie McCann and Liam Ruane were delighted and the way the girls played. 45 By John Walshe The monthly meeting of Midleton Town Council took place on Tuesday September 13th. It was chaired by the Mayor, Cllr Mary Woods (FG), and in attendance were Joe McCarthy, Town Clerk; James Fogarty, Town Manager; Dave Clarke, Town Engineer; along with Councillors Noel Collins (Ind), Betty Wall (Ind), Niall O'Neill (FF), Tom Cashman (Lab), Ted Murphy (Ind), Margaret Trundle (FG), Pat Buckley (SF). The following were some of the motions discussed Motion in the name of Cllr Noel Collins: "That this Council requests the Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government to abandon the proposal to introduce tolling of the major inter-city roads, including the Jack Lynch Tunnel." Cllr Collins said his first question was "who is responsibility for tolling? The Department of the Environment & Local Government will tell you that tolls are a matter for the NRA but the NRA will tell you that the decision is political. A tremendous amount of taxpayers money has been invested already in the construction of the Jack Lynch Tunnel and the imposition of tolls will make extra transport costs for businesses and it will also have major repercussions for families in this town and east Cork in general travelling to Cork to work." The motion was seconded by Cllr Wall who said it was absolutely disgraceful if they decide to toll the Jack Lynch Tunnel. Cllr Cashman also supported the motion as did Cllr Murphy who said "we are already paying road tax, and that should be that. Nobody should pay it." The Mayor, Cllr Woods, said she was also against the tolling the Jack Lynch Tunnel as it would make it very costly for people using it twice a day. The motion was agreed unanimously. Motion in the name of Cllr Noel Collins: "To help promote tourism to the town this Council, in conjunction with East Cork Tourism and other interested parties, enter into talks with Irish Rail with a view to establishing an Arts and Crafts cum museum Centre at Midleton Railway Station." Cllr Collins said the taxpayer was entitled to something in return for the money spent on the Railway Station. "I would envisage a number of small units and a museum centre where people could put on display crafts and paintings and the like. Midleton Railway Station is an ideal location for these business activities, the atmosphere there at the moment is like a morgue and we are losing out on a golden opportunity by not utilising these station buildings to promote tourism." Cllr Cashman seconded the motion, saying it would also create employment as well as promoting tourism. Motion in the name of Cllr Tom Cashman: "That Midleton Town Council report on the proposals, if any, to install wall mounted fire blankets in its Council owned properties." In reply, the Town Clerk said the scheme had already been introduced and all of the tenants should now have received the blankets and any tenant who did not receive one could still collect it at the Council offices. Motion in the name of Cllr Margaret Trundle: "That a safety barrier be erected on the footpath outside pedestrian entrance to Willowbank." Cllr Trundle said this was a dangerous entrance, especially for children who run straight out onto the road. The motion was seconded by Cllr Murphy who said it was "one of the most dangerous spots in the town." The Mayor also agreed, and the Town Engineer was asked to look into the matter. Motion in the name of Cllr Margaret Trundle: "That markings be put in place on the pedestrian crossings on the gyratory to enable pedestrians to see from which direction traffic is coming." The Town Engineer said he would take a detailed look at the crossings to see what could be done. Motion in the name of Cllr Niall O'Neill: "That Midleton Town Council in cooperation with Cork County Council would invest in the purchase of one CCTV camera to monitor the traffic moving on the Ballyannon Wood road. This with a view to curtailing fly-tipping of furniture and rubbish." Cllr O'Neil said he was horrified to see recently a sofa and two armchairs along with other items tossed into the ditch on the road to Ballyannon. "There is only one way in and one way out to Ballyannon so it would be a good idea if there was a CCTV unit in place to monitor the traffic along with a notice with a phone number for people to use if they see dumping taking place," he said. Cllr Collins was fully in support, saying that six months ago he had handed in a signed petition to Cork County Council on the matter. "The litter warning signs have yet to be erected so hopefully this motion in support will help." The Mayor, Cllr Woods, said she would hand it over to the Town Manager as it is a County Council area. The Manager said he would report on the matter at the next meeting. Motion in the name of Cllr Mary Woods: "That this Council, in support of the MIDLETON TOWN COUNCIL MEETING efforts of Midleton Community Hospital to address bed shortages and to provide more beds to accommodate 66 patients and to meet the growing demands for beds in the Cork East Area, call on the HSE to provide alternative accommodation for the Midleton Psychiatric Day Service so that premises kindly maid available by the Community Hospital may be utilised to address the urgent requirement for additional bed space in the hospital." Cllr Woods said the staff in the hospital work very hard and they deserve all the support they can get. Cllr Wall said at the moment the hospital is very crowded and if they don't get extra space it will be more difficult. Cllr Pat Buckley said he had spoken to the matron some months ago and it is the people on the ground who should be consulted on the matter. "I do feel sorry for the people in the hospital, but as we all know the HSE is going backwards, it's a disgrace." Motion in the name of Cllr Ted Murphy: " That Midleton Town Council, in conjunction with the proposed access and upgrading of the Main Street and laneways, consider having a public sculpture provided to acknowledge and honour Nellie Cashman, a native of Midleton who emigrated to the United States, lived an adventurous life and exemplified the Christian ethos in the help and assistance she gave to people in need." Cllr Murphy gave a detailed background of the life of Nellie Cashman who left Midleton in the 1850s to go to America where she worked in the goldmines. "But her main aim was to look after the welfare of the thousands of people who had emigrated at the time. She built hotels; she was involved in building schools, churches and hospitals. Five years ago she was honoured with a stamp in America but yet there was no honour given to her here at home. I think something should be done in this town for Nellie Cashman," said Cllr Murphy. Cllr O'Neill seconded the motion, saying that Cllr Murphy had brought a similar motion before the Council a number of years ago. Cllr Collins also added his support, saying that "she was gratuitous by name and by nature and I trust when Nellie takes the throne she will prompt our present generation to follow suit." Motion in the name of Cllr Ted Murphy: "That Midleton Town Council call on An Garda Siochána to effectively act in response to the accelerating lawlessness in the Midleton area represented by the increase in vandalism, robberies and public order in the area." Cllr Murphy stated that over the past six months there has been a large increase in crime in the area and there seemed to be very little in the way of people going to court. "There are fights on the street at night, outside the schools last week there were bottles been thrown across the road at 9 o'clock in the morning. We should not tolerate this. We have the best guards in the country but they should be seen more out in public. It may not be their fault, maybe it's the fault of the Department of Justice, but the guards should be taken away from their computers inside and be seen out on the streets. Where will it stop? What are the guards doing, are they doing anything? We will have to stand up and be seen as councillors and tell them to get out on the street and look after the people of the town and this area." Cllr Collins seconded the motion, citing the spate of housebreakings in the town in recent times. Cllr O'Neill, however, said he couldn't support the motion. "It is we who are responsible for our own legislation, and it's this legislation that has taken gardai from the streets and put them behind the computers. Now, Cllr Murphy wants these gardai put on the streets to deal with the physical violence they are being confronted with without being able to defend themselves because the do-gooders of this planet will be the first people to knock on our doors to say that my Johnny was confronted by Garda X and Garda X did this to him. In this motion I've heard no mention of the parents of this town. Where the hell are the parents? - where is their accountability in all of this?" Cllr Trundle agreed with Cllr O'Neill, saying that the gardai can't lay a hand on someone to project themselves. "It makes me very angry to think there are kids as young as 10 running around the town, these kids shouldn't be out after the hours of darkness and you've got to ask what are the parents doing when they don't know where their kids are. Maybe it's time to be put a curfew on them," she said. The Mayor, Cllr Woods, said she couldn't agree with the motion, although she supported aspects of it. "I feel the guards are doing a very good job with limited resources. They have their hands full with the rising generation. The day of respect and chivalry is well over and unless the young people respect their parents, their peers and the Garda Siochána, then we're going to have a very sad situation in this country."

46 KILLEAGH CAMOGIE CLUB Sun September 11th 2011 was a great day for Wexford camogie but in the lives of the Killeagh U12 camogie panel it was one to treasure. 12 lucky girls Cait Delaney, Kate McCarthy, Grainne Tyrell, Rachel Fogarty, Orla Cusack, Donna Coleman, Cleeva Motherway Ciara Barry, Clair Fitzgerald, Patricia Hegarty, Ellen Cassidy and Megan Treacy got to play hurling on the field of dreams for 10minutes. During these 10 Cait Delaney scored a goal and Ciara Barry a point. We were also able to get the 6 remaining panel members Alice O'Donnell, Amy Roche, Saoirse O'Shea, Niamh O'Brien & Carrie Manning involved in the guard of honour for the Senior Game, thus ensuring they all got some time on the hallowed ground. From beginning to end this was a great day. Micheal our driver with O'Connor coaches told us he never brought a losing team out of Croke Park (record still intact), great parking with a short walk for Niamh O'Brien and her crutches, the weather held up beautiful and was actually warm in Croke Park, the meal in the Castle Arms was 1st class as was the great hospitality and craic on the bus was great too with no one really singing out of tune. On the journey home spirits were high and one girl told me that she had to pinch herself when she woke that morning to make sure she wasn't dreaming. Winning the lotto couldn't buy the thrill the girls got on Sunday or the pride their parents felt. Siobhan & I hope that this will see them all hurling for at least another 20 years. Rose Goggin and Rachel Treacy came along with us on the day just to get a feel for things for when it's their turn and they were great support. The girls would like to thank a number of businesses in the village who contributed to the cost of the day - O'Neills, Londis, Barrys Hair Salon, Tom Kelly Butchers, Alan McNamee Plumber, Aherns Centra, Vibes Hair Salon, Colemans Newsagent Killeagh Pharmacy, O'Mahonys Bar, Kennedys Bar, Fogartys Garage and Tattans Bar, Mary O'Connor is also due a special mention for the time she gave all the girls in Croke Park and all the help with planning our trip. Thank You. Our U18s have been drawn against St Catherines in the championship so we'll need lots of support for this game. Commiserations to our senior games who went out of the Championship last Saturday to Douglas. The girls were bitterly disappointed as they only lost by 4points playing at our best but this is all a learning curve and the girls have definitely learnt a lot about themselves in these 3 games and we still have the summer cup final to play. CARRIGTWOHILL UTD FC Premier A: Carrigtwohill A 0 Kanturk 3 A disappointing start to the league campaign away to Kanturk. Despite missing about 6 players Carrig put in a decent performance and were unlucky to lose the game 3-0. Playing against a strong wind in the 1st half they defended well and played the better football to create a number of good chances but the finishing was wayward and the score remained 0-0 at half time. In the 2nd half Carrig again played the better football but failed to take their chances and conceded 3 soft goals including a soft penalty to lose 3-0. We will be hoping for better away to Blackstone next Saturday. Ballysdeedy Man of The Match: Alan Stapleton. Carrigtwohill B 0 St. John Boscos 2 AOH Cup Carrigtwohill B had there first defeat of the season sunday morning in the AOH Cup encounter against local rivals St. John Boscos. Carrig were lucky to make 11 with with 8 players out and had two late subs turn up so hardly ideal preparations for the home team. The wind played a big part and Carrig used it to there advantage in the first half with the better of the play and should of taken advantage at some stage but it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play, the Carrig back line getting caught in possesion and the Boscos forward going through to slot the ball into the bottom corner to take a one nil lead into the break. The second half continued where the first half had finished with both teams going for it and the home team battled hard to for the equalizer and came closest through forward Brian Barry, along ball was played over the the defenders, Brian ran through but unfortunately scoffed his shot after some pressure from the boscos defender and it went wide of the post. The match threatened to boil over with both teams fully commited and there was some minor scuffles with Brendan Cronin and Richie Mannix getting booked for the home team and Boscos number 8 also booked for his part in it. Boscos gauranteed the points 5 minutes from the end through a penalty, Darren Sylvester adjudged to have brought down the Boscos player in the box. Boscos centre half took the penalty and put the ball past stand in keeper and the home teams man of the match Cormac Carrol. It finished 0-2 to St John Boscos. Ballyseedy man of the match: Cormac Caroll Starting lineup: C.Caroll, A.Walsh, N.Murphy (R.Dunphy),K.O'Shea, K.O'Keffe, D.Sylvester, J.Broderick, S.Deady (K.Cody), R.Mannix, B.Barry, B.Cronin Inch Rovers Ladies Football Reports Inch Rovers Senior team the reigning All Ireland senior champions faced off against the young and upcoming Mourneabby team last Monday night in Fermoy. It was a night in September but it felt like November. A wet miserable night the rain swirled in around the stand and we huddled together to stay warm. I felt sorry for the players as they warmed up but they were not cold for long. The game started at breakneck pace with Inch getting a dream start, a well worked goal from the throw in that was slipped past the Mourneabby keeper. Mourneabbey showed true determination and chased the game from beginning to end but Inch's showed experience and a mean defence. Jill Horan scored a goal that appeared to defy the laws of physics, she put the ball between the keeper and the upright after turning inside the corner back and running along the end line. I was waiting for the pass to an outside player but instead she blasted the ball between the goal keeper and the upright. Amy O'Shea showed well throughout the game twisting and turning on a wet slippery field tormenting the Mourneabby defence. Defences win games Forwards determine by how much and Inch Rovers defence was mean on the night, keeping Mourneabby to 1-6 while Inch Rovers forwards clocked up an impressive Inch worked the ball out of defense and down the field time after time. The Inch forwards worked hard to find space and stayed patient. So on to the county Final which is due to be played in early October against Donoughmore. Inch Rovers will need to be at their very best to get past a very impressive and experienced Donoghmore team, their semi final was a much tighter game which may verywell serve them well. Our minor ladies faced Carrigtwohill in the minor league on Tuesday night last in a close run first half in which Carrig gained a well earned lead on the Inch ladies. But Inch recovered and went in at halftime with a five points ahead. I'm not sure what Noel O'Connor said to the young Inch team but they came out at the start of the second half and never let Carrigtwohill into the Inch half for fifteen minutes, the worked rate was high and continuous from the forwards to the backs. A good result for the Inch girls they continue to develop as a team and with some outstanding players this team could go a long way provided they can continue to improve. Full time score Inch Rovers 6-15 Carrigtwohill 3-7. A very special thanks to our sponsor GE health care. 47 Senior Hurling Semi Final Midleton 0-10 Carrigtwohill 1-10 So near and yet so far. Midleton Senior hurlers came up short in their effort to reach a first county final in 17 years when we went down by a goal to our neighbours Carrigtwohill on Sunday last. We played against the wind in the first half and coming up to half time were happy to be trailing by just a point in the circumstances. However we conceded a disappointing goal and a Sean Hennessy point meant we trailed by three at the short whistle, 1-07 to We failed to kick on for the second half and an outstanding rear guard action by our opponents meant we never got the scores that were required to get our noses in front. In the end a goal separated the sides but a return of three points by us in the second half with the wind was never going to be enough. It is a tough defeat for this young team but it is one their supporters believe will only make them stronger in the future. It is only right that we acknowledge the hard work put in by the players and their mentors this year that led to them reaching a county semi final. A big thank you to all our supporters, young and not so young, who came along to support the lads, it was much appreciated. Finally our best wishes to Carrigtwohill in the final, that they may maintain the proud record of East Cork clubs in senior finals over the last number of years. East Cork Hurling Final: Midleton GAA would like to thank all Club Members who helped in making the hosting of the East Cork Junior A Hurling Final on Saturday last such a success. It was busy week end for a lot of people and the extra effort to help out on an important day for the Club was much appreciated. A word of thanks to the East Cork Board on granting us the fixture and for their assistance in our preparations. A special mention to An Garda Siochana for their co operation on what was a very busy day in Midleton. Fe 11: We hosted Valley Rovers for our first league match after the summer break, the games were played in great spirit and some very good hurling all round. On the day we managed to win 3 matches and lost by a single point in the fourth game, all the boys tried hard and gave a huge effort Midleton 1 had Ronan lynch playing his heart out with some great hooking and blocking in defence and on Midleton 2 Ross O'Reagan and Jake Shanahan played to his high standards and covered ever inch of the pitch in his games. The Panel on the day was Mark Daly, Ciaran Evans, Kian Farmer, Niall Higgins, Cormac Hill, Harry Holohan, Griffin Hurley, Ronan Lynch, Ryan O'Riordan, Cormac O'Brien, Adam O'Connell, Tommy O'Connell, Ross O'Regan, Adam O'Riordan, Colin Oedegbe, Babatunde Olotu Jubril, Alan Power, Coleman Quinn, Liam Ryan, David Scanlon, Ross Shanahan, Jake Shannahan, Fergus Wade and Scott Wolohan, Over the last 3 weeks we have had a few challenge games which have been good for the boys who were able to make the trips we were away to Cashel and Kilt og Both games were played in good spirit with both teams giving the all. We would like to thank our senior players for giving their time to take our training session, and I know the boys look forward to them coming back again. We have a number of league matches over the next few weeks in both hurling and football We are to play St Finbarrs in football next weekend at 2 pm away ( to be confirmed) and then the following week in hurling at home please keep a watch on texts messages and it would be appreciated by us if you can answer all text if your son will be there or if he cant make it. Also it is important to make all training sessions as our numbers have dropped off over the summer. Fe 10: Midleton's Fe 10 team had an away trip to Moyle Rovers outside Clonmel on Saturday 10th of September. The code was hurling and we travelled with 28 players. With games being the required 11 aside we were required to play a different team in each half in order to give game time to each lad. This said the players got on with it and hurled away. The conditions were fierce and the wind howled equally for each team. Our keeper was capable of pucking into the opposition square in one half and unable to pass half way in the other half. The lads played well, their first and last games being their best. We met MIDLETON GAA NOTES up with some physically stronger teams in a couple of games and our team were up against it but battled on. It was great to finish with a win and made the trip home an enjoyable one for the kids. Well done all who travelled. Fe 9: On Saturday the 10th our fe9 hurlers headed for Roanmore for their yearly annual ground hurling charity blitz,120 teams took part in this fantastic blitz, teams from Waterford, Kilkenny, Galway, Wexford, Dublin and Cork. These matches are in groups of four teams and are seven aside matches, we had 25 players so we picked two teams with each team playing six matches each, the rules are ground hurling only with only the goalkeeper allowed to pick the ball up, these rules make all games very even with every player getting plenty of game time. Our teams did very well in both groups showing what fantastic and skilful games can be played with these rules. Team 1:Jack Fitzgerald, Jack Mckay, Evan Mccarthy, David Connolly, Darragh Crowley. Patrick kelly, James Coffey, Conor Fitzgerald, Brion Sanderson, Conor Hayes, Luke Deane, Rory, Lang..Team 2:Alex Pranger, Alex Quirke, Remierdie Tscmanga, Daniel O'Donovan, Charlie Walsh, Shane Newcombe, Aaron Coughlan, Oran Ryan, Bradley Savage, Oliver Murray, Jack O'Reagan, Kevin O'Brien, Daire Mooney. We left Midleton GAA at and arrived home at 21.00,this blitz has been running 15 years now and every year it raises money for local charities. Also on the day our fe8 hurlers came with us so it turned out to be another fantastic trip. A big thank you to the Roanmore club for inviting us to this blitz again this year, our players and mentors are looking forward to next year already and also to the parents who travelled on the day for their continued support. GRACE MCGRATH, EAST CORK GOLF CLUB, WINS AIB PERPETUAL TROPHY Grace McGrath (13 years old) playing out of East Cork Golf Club collected her first piece of Silverware last Sunday when she won the AIB Under 19 Perpetual Trophy in Slievenaman with 41 points. Grace who is an active member of East Cork's Juvenile Section, also competed in the ILGU Munster Development Championship in Kanturk over the Summer and won Best Nett and placed 3rd in The Ryan Cup in Tipperary. Tribute must go to Don MacFarlane, PGA Professional at East Cork for his coaching ability and Ms. Tara McCarthy, Juvenile Officer who are both working hard to build a panel of young golfers for the future of the club.

48 LISGOOLD GAA NOTES Junior Football League Div III Lisgoold 2.13 Carrigtwohill 2.09 A horrible Monday night weather wise witnessed the clash of neighbours, both wearing blue and gold, where weather conditions dictated the encounter, and saw the match boil down to the veritable "game of two halves". Facing the elements, we trailed by 2.06 to 0.03 at the short whistle. Some astute positional switches at the interval saw our home side dominate thereafter to run out deserved victors. Terrific performances by Noel Connery, John Cashman ( with a sublime 0.06 from play), Killian Kingston and Cathal Cashman saw the deepening darkness envelope the players as we ran time out successfully. John Paul O'Brien, whose first touch after introduction as a substitute was a blistering rocket into the top corner, and Kevin O'Shea, who deftly lobbed the opposing 'keeper for a peach, both raised the green flags which were to prove decisive at the conclusion. Minor Football County Championship Quarter Final Lios gcul 3.08 Shamrocks 2.10 Unfortunately no details of this game are to hand at time of printing, so watch for report next week. Under 12 Hurling Lios gcul 2.13 Bride Rovers 3.10 A cracking game in Pairc Lios gcul on Wednesday was not spoiled by the oncoming rain and darkness, as two very even sides played out a deserved draw. Our visitors dominated the early exchanges and, having capitalized on some lackluster defending in the opening period, deserved their 3.07 to 0.06 interval advantage. A series of astute half time positional switches by the team management ( hard to understand how JBM overlooked these lads for his backroom team! ) saw the home side slowly reign in the lead to secure a worthy share of the spoils. Two goal hero Liam Chandler and Liam O'Shea shared the scoring spoils, while Cian Healy shored up the central defensive berth where Sean Whelan and Jason Hegarty were both equally impressive. Under Age in Midleton We took the short journey to Midleton to play the home side on Saturday morning and played two very evenly matches eleven a side games where everybody got to experience a lot of game time. Our thanks to a very accommodating host Club who afforded our sides the privilige of playing on the beautifully prepared pitch that would, a few short hours later, feature the cracking East Cork Blue Riband Junior A Championship Final. The Devlin family were on hand to present medals to all children who took part on the day. The Devlin family are great supporters of the club and indeed Darragh was heavily involved with the juvenile club before his job took him to pastures new. 49 DUNGOURNEY CROWNED EAST CORK CHAMPIONS AFTER THRILLING REPLAY SUCCESS DUNGOURNEY 0-18 CARRAIG NA BHFEAR 1-14 REPORT/INTERVIEWS - JOHN CASHMAN A perfect evening, a perfect setting and in the end a perfect result for Dungourney crowned East Cork Oil Junior A Grade champions for the third time following a thrilling one point win over Carraig na bhfear at the splendid Carrigtwohill venue. The howling wind of the initial fixture a few days previous had disappeared and on a historic night for the GAA in the division, with a mid week finale under lights to the marquee competition, both teams served up a thrilling encounter full of honest endeavour and illuminated by some sparkling skills. In the end Dungourney triumphed because they produced the big moments in the pressure cooker atmosphere when the game was there to be won and lost. Shane Casey was not only the winning captain, but the match winner and the winner of the man of the match award. His final point of nine coming less than 2 minutes from the last whistle was less spectacular than earlier efforts, which were even more significant in shaping his teams; ultimate triumph. As the first half action progressed Dungourney twice hit choppy waters firstly following a contribution of 3 Paul Murphy points which shot Carraig na bhfear into a 5-2 early advantage and then late in the half following a John O Sullivan goal when Dungourney fell 1-6 to 0-4 in arrears. Casey stepped up to the mark on both occasions to steady the ship, initially with a brace of well taken efforts and then with a string of superb points capped by 26th minute score from nearly 80 meters which tied the match at 0-9 to , 2006 and 2011 are championship winning years for Dungourney maybe, just maybe there is more to come in this hurling season for this developing team. Roll on the county championship next month. AFTER MATCH PRESS TALK Dungourney Coach Sean Daly This win was thoroughly deserved for the players. They put in a massive effort all year and really dug in during the drawn match and in the replay when things were going against them. The first half of the replay was a bit like the drawn match in that we started a bit slowly and as we improved Carraig got the goal and that put them ahead, I suppose we responded really well with 6 unanswered points before half time, which left us happy enough at the break. I thought the second half again saw us hurl in fits and starts, which is a reflection on Carraig na bhfear because thy did not allow us. They are a really good side. In fairness to the referee the 2 incidents regarding the goals were very hard to call. I think you get some of these and they should hopefully balance themselves out over the year. The referee was not the reason why we won it or Carraig lost it These are 2 good hurling sides. There was never going to be much between us. We are just happy that we got the few breaks to win this one. Whatever happens from now on is a bonus our team is really young, 3 sixteen year olds on the starting fifteen. We will enjoy this win and see what happens after that in terms of the rest of the season. Either side of that leveller sub Kevin Rohan and Kenneth Kelleher also added vital points for Dungourney before Carraig struck late in the half with a brace from Ronan Spillane and Paul O Keeffe. In between appropriately Casey had landed a close range free to leave the sides deadlocked again at the change of ends. On the balance of what had gone before and the element of supremacy that they gained for the majority of the closing 10 minutes, Dungourney retired the happier of the two teams. However, in keeping with the nature of the contest opponents Carraig na bhfear were to enjoy an early period of dominance on the score board early in the second half. It led to them moving into a 1-12 to 0-12 advantage by the 5th minute of the half. Just like the first 30 minutes Dungourney again settled to their task. Another Shane Casey free and a well taken point by the lively James McCarthy after good work by Kenneth Kelleher and James Leahy trimmed the margin to the minimum. McCarthy had actually registered a goal in advance of Casey s free but Willie O Leary s whistle had sounded whilst the corner forward was in the act of striking the ball. The same scenario was repeated 13 minutes later when Dungourney reached parity after a barren period when both sides created chances which they did not take. Carraig na bhfear as a result of both poor shooting and over ambitious efforts managed to strike 8 consecutive wides in this action packed spell. Dungourney Captain Shane Casey My immediate emotion after the match is that I can hardly believe we are after winning it, after losing the final last year and then drawing just a few days ago, it appeared as if it was never going to happen for us. It was a very long 12 months since the 2010 decider. We felt maybe we left it behind us, but we trained hard and had a new level of commitment shown by all of us. We trained hard from early on, had a good enough league, rowed into the championship and played really well first day out. I suppose we drove on from there It must have been a cliff hanger looking back on it for people watching, but I couldn t appreciate it on the field we were just focussed on the next score. As regards the last free, I was concentrating on the getting the free over the bar and wasn t too focussed on the overall significance of it late on. This is a young side which has have changed a lot since 2006 and even since last year as we had 6 changes on the starting side. We are blessed to have some very good young players coming through, who have a great attitude. They take it very seriously and that gives us as older players a spring in our step. Meantime, after the referee s whistle halted young James McCarthy as he again inserted his influence on the game, the levelling score from Shane Casey s resultant free set the scene for a grand stand finale. Naill Motherway brought the best out of Carraig net minder Conor Hegarty before a Shane Hegarty beauty from the right wing edged Dungourney in front entering the final five minutes. But more drama was around the corner. Up stepped John O Sullivan to find the range in quick succession from placed balls and once again roles were reversed. Brian Rodgers an impressive second half substitute levelled matters up swiftly and then it was left to the games top marksman Shane Casey to hold his nerve and ensure a night of celebration for his side with that successful late free from 45 meters. Nobody in the huge crowd would have objected to extra time had Carraig found a hasty response. It wasn t to be and whilst the losers will rue a catalogue of wides, Dungourney s defence will take credit for exerting the necessary high level of pressure which obviously hampered their opponents efforts. Shane Casey player of the match receives his award from Sean Walsh of Star Homes, match sponsors Shane Casey receives the Jamesy Kelleher Cup from Michael O'Brien Chairman of the East Cork Board
